Neuromancer49, do gaming w thoughts on arpgs?

Well if you liked PoE I doubt you’ll like D4. It’s a much simpler game. Sadly my only advice is to try GD and Last Epoch again. I’ve got hundreds of hours in the former and I just got 10 hours into the latter.

Last Epoch feels like a more approachable PoE. I thoroughly enjoy how the skills interplay with one another, but I still prefer the itemization in Grim Dawn.

The only reason I’m not playing GD currently is because I have too many QoL mods installed so my cloud saving doesn’t work, but I can cloud save for Last Epoch for my steam deck lmao.

Templa,

What about D4 last update? I haven’t played it but I heard a lot of people saying they fixed a lot of the issues with the game.

Neuromancer49,

Can’t say I’ve heard anything since launch, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

chunkystyles,

Just a preface that I don’t like PoE.

Season 4 is a lot more fun, but I still think D3 is a better game. But if you compare D4 to what D3 was like at after release, D4 is in much better shape. It’s definitely heading in the right direction, and I suspect that the expansion in August will make it much better, similar to how D2 and D3 did.

Back to season 4, I leveled to max level, maxed out the battle pass, and experienced all of the content and that was good enough for me. I want really interested in sticking around to switch to better build and get the best gear.

LaserTurboShark69, do games w Elden Ring Twitter warns of DLC spoilers being posted everywhere

It sucks having to either play it on day one or stay away from social media in order to avoid spoilers

HubertManne,

is it really that hard. I have to search for posts about a game to see things about the game on the whole and most things specifcally about a subject are pretty good about spoiler tags and even then usually the subject will indicate to you if its dangerous spoiler wise.

dditty,

I uninstalled the Google News app bc otherwise I’m sure it’d send me notifications for articles about bosses and lore

smeg,

I uninstalled whatever version of it was around a few years ago when it spoiled the f1 I was planning on watching later by sending a push notification with the result the moment it finished

HeyJoe,

I am not ready to play it due to life stuff, but I absolutely have to because I know my friends will be playing it day 1 just like before, and if I didn’t join them I would have missed out on some of the best online gaming I’ve had in probably 10 years.

Fizz, do gaming w favorite gaming medium?

I’ve had laptops, consoles and a steam deck. Nothing comes close to sitting at a desk and gaming on my pc. I don’t know what it is I just like my desk. Even when I’m using the steamdeck I sit at my desk.

DreamyRin,
@DreamyRin@beehaw.org avatar

this is such a mood. I was playing Mario Odyssey earlier on a big screen tv, and… it still didn’t feel great, hahahaha. even though my monitors are smaller, I just prefer it.

Fizz,

I love making things and trying to figure out new ways to improve my experience. So I spent half a day making my lounge perfectly comfy, big 60inch 4k TV, pc hooked up, controller If I needed but also mouse and keyboard. and I played for 30mins before I realized it sucks compared to sitting at my desk.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

I’m with you on wanting the big, upholstered chair, but also liking the desk.

I kind of wish that easy chairs at desks were more of a thing. As it is, a typical desk doesn’t really fit them: you have “office chairs” and “living room chairs”, and the two don’t meet much. Couple problems:

  • A big and top-heavy chair is gonna tip more easily, so you have to extend the base and casters.
  • A big chair isn’t gonna roll as easily, so you can’t push back from a desk.

For years, I’ve been thinking about switching to a table or workbench with a higher top or something.

I think that the answer probably has several elements.

  • Maybe the desk can just…go away. Desks are important for paperwork, were important for supporting heavy CRTs, but I rarely actually need one now.
  • Monitor goes on an table/desk/floor-mounted arm. I’ve been diong that, and I’m happy with it, but still have the “cubbyhole” desk from the CRT era. Maybe just swing the thing into place every time you sit down.
  • Keyboard and mouse need to be attached to the floor or chair, not the desk. This is a bit harder. There are keyboard and mouse trays, but if one reclines in a chair, they also tilt the tray, which I don’t want – the mouse surface has to remain horizontal. If you can live with a trackball or trackpad, that might be tolerable. It might be possible to have some kind of leveling attachment that fits over the arms, or have a free-standing keyboard/mouse tray that fits over the chair, pole on each side of it. Something like this. If reclining adjusts the required height of the keyboard/mouse and the mount is freestanding, then it has to be trivial to adjust the height.
Fizz,

A big sofa chair that wheels would be perfect. Even though my desk is empty and only has a keyboard, mouse I still like the space incase I need to solder or draw or store rubbish.

    kromem,

    Probably added after that update.

    The new items stuff in particular seems like QoL considerations for “we just added a hundred items to the game for players coming back to it after months away.”

    Yeah. And consider the verification process games have to go through on consoles, probably easier to do it all in one big update.

    Every monster collector out there tries to reinvent the Pokémon formula, but if I were to create one, it’d be like Digimon World 1: a semi-open world with a vivid sense of wonder and exploration, and fully-fledged pet raising mechanics.

    I can’t fathom how beating up wild animals, forcefully capturing them, and pitting them against other animals in a government-sanctioned tournament is supposed to evoke a feeling of friendship and adventure.

    I just want more in-depth mechanics to raise my magical animal, and more ways to interact with them outside of battles.

    Cartridges actually have much faster load times than discs. Notice how the Switch has reverted back to cartridges? They’re faster.

    As for the controller… It is pretty odd. Though, at the time, we didn’t have the same standard for controller design we have now. So it makes sense that Nintendo would try something bold. Then after they had committed to the design, the world decided the PS1 controller made much more sense, and that became the benchmark for future controller designs.

    SomethingBurger,

    Handhelds all use cartridges (the only exception being the PSP) because they are smaller and do not require mechanical parts.

    ILikeBoobies,

    The controller was so you could use it as a d-pad or as a joystick controller

    Our current format has the assumption you will use both at the same time

    Cartridges were faster but held less data, currently there is no reason to use cds/dvds/blurays over sd cards

    glitches_brew,

    I’m willing to bet the revert to carts had something more to do with the switch being handheld and it’s small form than load times. Still a beneficial side effect though.

    PlasticExistence, do games w [QUESTION] What is the most realistic-looking game that can also run on Linux distros?

    You can look for specific games on protondb.com to get a good idea of how they run.

    8bitdo Pro 2. I LOVE me some 2D platformers, and the D-pad is absolutely amazing for me. I think I have 4 in total now, two wired two wireless?

    Only problem is the sticks wear out, but they sell replacements! So no tossing the whole controller :D

    plofi,

    They seem nice and not too pricey. Their website said they have Hall effect sticks. Shouldn’t those be more durable and longer lasting than regular sticks?

    For how long did you use them before you started having issues with the sticks?

    TheBest, (edited )
    @TheBest@midwest.social avatar

    So my sticks still work, but I’ve worn down the rubber on two of the left joysticks so much its crumbling apart. Purchased in 2021 and was my main driver until that happened about 6 months ago, so a fair bit of use. Used that opportunity to try out the PS5 controller and the new Xbox series ones.

    And I mean… they’re good?

    The resistive triggers were cool and the touchpad is really customizeable. Xbox controller stays solid but boring.

    Switch Pro controller feels great but weird to be playing PC games with. Nothing WRONG with it, just feels mentally disconnecting for some reason lol.

    Idk. For me the Pro 2 and the wireless SNES sized 8bitdo controllers are perfectly comfy. Have an ultimate in its way to me now actually.

    Edit all of my controllers are non hall effect

    I never played Tricky but love SSX3 and On Tour. A lot of people fondly talk about Tricky, so is there anything about it that the later games lack?

    gsfraley,

    It’s more over-the-top and arcade-y. Things like volcanos exploding as you ride down the slopes and an indoor mall-like mountain in Tokyo with an air-lift you use to do laps. Note that it’s not free-ride, so there are pluses and minuses to it.

    dditty,

    My brother used to be able to get like 2,000,000 points with Mac at Tokyo Megaplex. That course was the best for tricks!

    NocturnalMorning, (edited ) do games w Controversy and Censorship

    Is this really something you waste time thinking about, whether or not the devs waste their frame budget on boob jiggle physics?

    Seriously, there’s so much to optimize in a game to get good performance, jiggling boons is way down on the list of things to worry about.

    CorrodedCranium,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    I think it depends on the developer. They might lump it in with other realism things like hair physics.

    I think what OP is talking about is things being removed. It doesn’t have much to do with optimising the game.

    NocturnalMorning,

    It does if you’re using physics to simulate it. Sure, if it’s just part of an animation you’re not losing anything by having it. But if you’re calculating the physics in real-time, it’s costly. They do it for hair, clothes, and apparently boobs now.

    CorrodedCranium,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

    I get that. I’m saying showing less thigh doesn’t make the game run faster and developers might not view something like that as a waste.

    … apparently boobs now.

    I feel like jiggle physics has been around for just as long

    boomer, do gaming w Why do mobile games suck nowadays?

    “Nowadays” ? They’re just getting good! Did you mean to say, “why are mobile games that suck, so popular” ? It’s because they’re accessible and usually F2P .

    sleepybisexual,

    Take angry birds for an example,

    It used to be a good game, you had your level, Maine an optional micro transaction.

    Now the modern angry birds is an ad riddled mess

    boomer,

    Oh yeah. I get it. I guess that’s why I stopped playing those long ago 🙂

    I’m a huge mobile gamer though. It’s amazing what we can play on our phones with an xbox controller. It’s better than the pc experience for me because I can map the controller how I want to and am not stuck with the defaults.

    Tons of amazing games coming this year. ZZZ wuthering waves Azur Promelia Etc.

    yuri,

    You can remap controllers on pc though, like at a system level if you use steam. I remember having to go through a whole rigamarole to customize controls for a mobile game that didn’t support controller, I had to use a weird third party tool that interpreted the controller input as virtual screen touches. It almost kinda worked lmao

    boomer,

    I remember way back trying to play genshin on my pc and it wouldnt let me map the right button trigger to attack , like i like it and I was like, i’m just going back to mobile.

    yuri,

    I forget that games like genshin exist lol

    witx, do games w Half Life 3

    I think HL3 will only happen to push some frontier in gaming, like they did with Alyx and VR. It’s the only safe move with that franchise and all the hype

    Hawk,

    Gabe has always said he’ll make HL3, “when the technology is there”.

    No idea what it means, but it seems he at least has a vision for what the game should be.

    KingThrillgore,
    @KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

    Alyx used PBR a technology already dated compared to Raytracing and it looks better than most games with Raytracing. We’re there, man.

    Zahille7,

    I mean at least Source 1 is still being used to develop games (or at least was before Source 2 code and all was released). Valve made a game engine so tough and versatile you can make it do anything you want.

    GMod took that engine, and has done absolutely wild things with it. Hell, even just the modders for Half-Life have done crazy things with it, like make it into an isometric RTS game with Lambda Wars.

    Hubi,
    @Hubi@lemmy.world avatar

    This is exactly it. Most of their major titles utilize some new tech or groundbreaking feature and whatever they have planned for HL3 is just not ready yet.

    teradome, do gaming w Maybe hot take: as a handheld, the regular switch is an awful handheld

    Not a hot take at all. It was revolutionary for the first year it was released and then was quickly surpassed on every front by any company that put slightly more effort (and more cost) into any part of the switch: graphics, sensors, controllers, expandability, etc. Pretty stock for any Nintendo product, because they only focus on hardware that be produced mass-market and get good profit margins on. Which means it’s often made with current-to-dated components that can get overlooked because it’s the only platform you can play Nintendo games on. Also, not sure why they are so allergic to ergonomics, all the way back to the NES controller, the least comfortable controller of its peers
