Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2, if you haven’t played already. Think of them as the stepping stones for BG3.

Spec Ops: The Line is a 3rd person shooter with an incredible story, I think it takes 4-6 hours to go through the campaign. Short when compared to RPGs, but worth the time. People also talk about Titanfall 2’s campaign being great, I haven’t played it yet.

Mass Effect trilogy is also very good, mainly the 2nd game. The first game is the jankiest of the bunch and the 3rd is much better after all the DLC, though I still don’t like how the optional Paragon/Renegade prompts from 2 became obligatory QTE in 3.

Telorand, do gaming w Valve won't sacrifice battery life to deliver a more powerful Steam Deck 2

We’re not going to do a bump every year. There’s no reason to do that. And, honestly, from our perspective, that’s kind of not really fair to your customers to come out with something so soon that’s only incrementally better. So we really do want to wait for a generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life before we ship the real second generation of Steam Deck. But it is something that we’re excited about and we’re working on.

It’s refreshing to see someone that understands their customers. I often experience buyer’s remorse with even products I like and have thoroughly researched and use often. Never once have I felt like I wasted money on the SD, and it just feels like it constantly gets better.

WittyBits,

Agreed. Even though the SD OLED addresses all the customer feedback from the LCD version, both devices are still on equal footing when it comes to SteamOS. They didn’t abandon the previous generation, they improved on it by making it a more capable device. When someone asks me which one to buy, I always tell them to decide based on the money they’re willing to spend on it. Yes, the OLED is better in terms of specs, but that doesn’t make the LCD a bad console.

GammaGames,

The OLED update also helped create a secondary market of used/refurbished units, it was a pretty good decision

Gamers_mate,

Good to know Valve realize most people just want to use the device they have without upgrading every year just to create E-waste.

EldritchFeminity,

If they could, they would. But a lot of the time, they don’t even bother to keep the source code of the games that they make. It’s estimated that more than 50% of all games are lost to history because the companies that made them never kept the source code or a copy.

I remember there being a little scandal a few years ago when a remaster of a game came out and it still had the cracker’s logo in it from the pirated copy they used for the source code.

@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

Chess is free to play now, but for centuries it was more like shareware.

Welt,

What do you mean?

VindictiveJudge,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

You can play online and there are tons of free apps, but it used to be that someone had to purchase a set to be able to share it with their friends. Though since making copies would have been difficult I guess it would have been more like Mario Party than the first nine levels of Doom.

Gabu,

The issue was never having the set, you can make one in an afternoon with scrap wood. The problem is having other people who want to play whenever you want to play.

Welt,

But doesn’t shareware refer to software that is distributed freely, playable (maybe with limitations on how far you can play into the game, or how long you can play it for free) but it’s generally a proprietary game that is distributed through this model? I may not have a perfect grasp on the precise meaning of shareware.

I see chess more like abandonware - if someone developed a proto-chess game and didn’t assert their ownership over the IP (recognising that this happened before copyright and IP were understood concepts), doesn’t that make it effectively free to play, noting you of course need a board to play?

Maybe an ancient and highly modded board game doesn’t translate that well to a software/copyright analogy. Also you lost me on your comparison between Mario Party (I think you mean only one person needs to own the game) and the first levels of Doom (which are more like a demo). I don’t see either of these as shareware, though I guess a freely playable demo is a form of shareware with my understanding of the term above!
