mosiacmango,

Planet crafter is supposed to have solid multiplayer if you like satisfactory style build/resource games.

mosiacmango,

Twitch turbo ejected the largest streamer on its platform days after the messages were sent, so… likely pretty fucking inappropriate.

These were DMs, so never public, but the “tried to meetup at twitchcon” makes it seem like he was explicitly trying to rape a kid and thats where twitch, who could have just said nothing, hit the “fuck no” button.

Fuck this guy and good on them. Amazon still has some decent people, or at least did.

mosiacmango, (edited )

In a hilariously circular way, EA has this beat still.

The Simcity 2013 launch was so terrible it killed Simcity and the studio Maxis, basically paving the way for City Skylines to take over the genre 2 years later.

It was online only, to the point where if you disconnected from the Internet you were booted out of the game. It also did most game rendering server side to force multiplayer/anti piracy/EA Origin store, and they only had enough infastructure for 1/10th of their player base on launch. That 10% isn’t exaggeration, either. They underestimated server load by 90%.

It was also a severely buggy, local resource hog somehow, even with being mostly remotely rendered. Since only a tiny fraction of the servers needed for the game were online, the game just chocked itself to death.

It took months to get it to a “working” state, at which point people had discovered all the insane and dumb behavior by ingame actors like citizens just picking a random house to go to end of day/etc. The tiny city limit size caused by being always online was also a very sore point for players, as you could barely build anything in a city building game. You could finish buillding your “city” in just a few hours, at which point you had to buy another “zone” that was separate from your current one. They didmt seamlessly connect like old SimCity or city skylines, you actually entered another tiny city slice to build on. It was terrible, and the size limit was clearly one of the measures to reduce server costs, as each zone looked like it was a new small server instance.

By the time they actually resolved the server issues, the game was dead, ending a 20+ year legacy in gaming for the brand and the studio. EA hasent made a simcity game in 11 years because of its failure. It was a shitshow and a half.

mosiacmango,

They announced it at summer game fest a couple of days ago, then announced it would be released in 24 hrs.

Bit of a double whammy, but a well received one.

mosiacmango,

Even in your defense, you point out that someone at the company made the explict choice to sell devices with defective cabling. At no point did he blame the engineers who designed it for that choice.

That’s a shit company that doesnt deserve anyone’s support, regardless if it was “engineers” or “bean counters” that opted to continue to sell what they knew was a defective product.

The fact that it happened over and over with multiple devices means it’s a culture issue with the company, not a one off mistake.

mosiacmango,

Intentionally selling a defective product without informing you customers beforehand is malicious, no matter the justification.

mosiacmango,

I haven’t shit on you at all. Re- read my comments and point out one negative thing I’e said about you or engineers.

Ive only talked about buisness ethics, and the pervasive negatives that come from misleading customers. If you feel that’s a dig on you, some self reflection might be warranted.

mosiacmango,

Alana Pierce has a great take on this. Her pount is that all games are a risk, but live service has a chance at infinite upside.

Suits dont give a shit about anything but risk/reward, so live service always seems like the right choice to them, even if 99% of them bomb.

mosiacmango,

Adding all those helldiver’s players into the “Sony account to PlayStation now subscription service” sales funnel is the financial goal here, likely along with selling any data they collect about you to any bidder.

This does make Sony money, but it likely doesn’t make them more than an indie becoming the 7th most successful game this year, but here we are anyway.

mosiacmango,

This game might sell me on a foldable phone too.

mosiacmango,

It helped bring trump into office in 2016, so they are ginning it up again for the election year.

mosiacmango,

Sure hope they spin off like some of the previous crew.

Bruce and Lawrence can welcome them into their world.

mosiacmango,

Spun off into a half dozen youtube channels/podcasts/animated shows as well.

Funny internet people who were meh to shitty buisnesses owners who sold out to WB a decade back and now are gone.

mosiacmango,

Naming is strange and inconvenient, as there is a prominent raspi singe board competitor named the Orange pi and these 2 projects look to be unrelated.

mosiacmango,

But every single corporation ever says that when they vertically and horizontally integrate their operations, it streamlines workflows and brings quality and savings to customers.

Customers always see that quality and saving, right? That always happens when monopolies form, right?

mosiacmango,

Dungeons of the endless is beutiful. A unique roguelike thats more strategic than action based, but gives your choices real weight. You will have to lose people and you will make mistakes to complete the missions, but every one of them leaves you with a sense of impact.

I get the same vibes from it as FTL, the sense of weighty choices. A great buy at $2.50

There is a new “action focused” sequel to dungeon of the endless whose name i forget because its an entirely forgetable game. It fully eliminates meaningful gameplay in trade for mediocre combat. It can be skipped entirely.

mosiacmango,

DLC is also 100% worth it. Adds lots of depth, extra items, charectors and levels, and in level item “mutators” that completely change how important items work if you want.

Super good. Makes a fun and deep game more fun and deeper.

mosiacmango,

Ahh, the good old “other os” days, right up to when sony killed it 3yr later with an update, and was sued for 100s of millions.

Humourously, the PS3 went without having its games cracked for all 3 yrs. It was only after they suddenly and without explanation removed “other os” that hardware hacker “geohot” actually opted to crack the ps3. It took about 3 days to do, and he said he specifically did it because of sonys actions.

Good times.

GTA 6’s Publisher Says Video Games Should Theoretically Be Priced At Dollars Per Hour (www.forbes.com) angielski

While Take-Two is riding high on their announcement that a GTA 6 trailer is coming, its CEO has some…interesting ideas on how much video games could cost, part of a contingent of executives that believe games are underpriced, given their cost, length or some combination of the two.

mosiacmango,

Too bad it will be at a minimum $70, and i bet with the hype, even $80, while also being chockful of microtransactions.

mosiacmango,

Embracer bought Gearbox, and recently laid off tons of people. Don’t be to hopeful.

mosiacmango,

Embrace the dated a bit. The sales are worth it.

Best time to min/max is likely 1-2 yrs after release though. Yall a ways late with alan wake.

mosiacmango,

That or needs a “you spammed medic 30 times while i was busy helping a teammate just to try to get a pocket medic. Fuck you.”

mosiacmango,

Alanah is a great creator. She worked for IGN as a reporter for years, then at Funhaus as a host/editor, and finally broke into games writing, which was her goal for a long time. She also hosts an excellent cross discipline gaming podcast with gaming actors/musicians/devs talking about all things gaming.

Shes seen the industry from every angle. Its telling that her conclusion as a whole is “this is fucked.”

mosiacmango,

She has a great deal of respect for the devs/writers/artists/workers. Its the system itself and the execs that are fucked. The toxic atmosphere they cultivate keeps churn high so profits stay high. They build a bad place that attracts bad people that stay and good people that should leave, and they dont give a fuck as long as “number goes up.”

Give the video a watch. It’s a very candid take from someone immersed in all the layers of the field.

mosiacmango,

That thread is from 2020, where they said they fixed the password send issue.

Op, how old is ths image above?

mosiacmango,

The samsung 990 is fine, but a bit overpriced. Something like this sabernt is also a high quailty gen 4 drive, and running under $100 for 2TB with a heatsink.

Id actually recommend going for the 4TB of that same model for $210. By far the most bang for your buck.

mosiacmango,

He does, but not the stake Gaben has. Sweeny sold 40% to tencent. This still gives him control, but thats a very large shareholder that can push and pull when they want.

mosiacmango,

Probally an api call that goes out to Unity once you start a game and the engine comes online.

Im sure they would love to charge devs the instant we click a download link though.

Steam's Oldest User Accounts Turn 20, Valve Celebrates With Special Digital Badges - IGN (www.ign.com) angielski

Some of Steam’s oldest user accounts are turning 20-years old this week, and Valve is celebrating the anniversary by handing out special digital badges featuring the original Steam colour scheme to the gaming veterans....

mosiacmango,

Orange box homies say whatsup.

mosiacmango,

Haha yup. I bought it for half life, but figured i would play the other games first. Portal was amazing, so I gave TF2 a shot next.

I didn’t play half life for like 2 years.

mosiacmango,

Ohh man, you have a treasure trove of content ahead of you if you like. He played isaac daily for almost a decade, starting on the flash version.

There are literally thousands of episodes of astute, off the cuff commentary about whatever while he did runs. Markiplier even credited a guide he wrote about streaming to be a big part of why he got started.

Dude doesn’t play isaac anymore, but if you enjoy daily, mundane bullshit discussed in an entertaining way, you’ll likely enjoy his work.
