Finished Dredge, and now onto Somerville

The Steam BulletHeaven2.0 festival has arrived

There are so many quirky game festivals. Previously, there was an ‘Airplane and Train Game Festival’ specifically promoting airplane and train games. This time, Steam has introduced a new BulletHeaven Game Festival, featuring games similar to Vampire Survivors. Many survivor-like games are participating in the event, and new...

xavier666,

I call it the gaming equivalent of Tiktok. No story, no permanence, instant gratification.

xavier666,

I’ve been playing Dredge a lot. Good game, art style and music is nice. Can be a bit spooky for some but I enjoy it.

xavier666,

I’d kill to have it

xavier666,

The current way to play Epic/GoG/Amazon games on the Steam Deck is

  • Switch to desktop mode
  • From the app store, search for Heroic Launcher and install
  • Launch Heroic
  • Put login credentials for Epic/GoG/Amazon
  • Wait for your library to get populated
  • Install the games
  • Add Heroic as a non-Steam application
  • Switch back to Big Picture mode
  • Launch Heroic
  • Play games

While the number of steps seems like a lot, if you compare against the Windows equivalent, it’s not a lot simply because Windows has no Big Picture/console mode. I personally hate the desktop mode in Windows because I’m forced to use the touchscreen constantly.

What would you like to be changed in this process?

xavier666,

I have tried it but Big Picture mode in Windows is extremely limited because

  • Cannot change system settings (Power usage/fan-curve/FPS/Refresh rate)
  • Cannot add Bluetooth device (controller/headphone) within Steam; need to switch back to Windows
  • Floating windows interfere with application focus since there is no gamescope. You need to use the touchscreen from time to time which is annoying
  • No Decky Loader
xavier666,

what I want is an official way to install and launch third party games, or at least third party launchers from within Steam

While I think this would be great for everybody, but I think the money-oriented guys inside Valve would think it’s a bad idea. If you present an easy way to install other launcher to the masses, people will be swayed away from buying from the Steam store. Valve wants publishers to stay on their store; that is their trump card. I remember someone tried putting an alternate store on Steam Store and it was quickly removed to avoid legal troubles.

Windows absolutely does have a Big Picture mode. You can set up Steam to launch on boot straight into Big Picture. If all you want is to play Steam games you never have to use the Desktop on Windows either

BigPicture in Windows is extremely nerfed compared to Bazzite/SteamOS which I have detailed in this comment and further elaborated in this post. The tl;dr version is “yes you can use BigPicture but you still have to deal with a lot of Windows shenanigans”

Source: I’m a user of both Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally.___

xavier666,

While I don’t agree with you on the usability of Big Picture on Windows, I certainly agree with you on one point; it would be great if other game launchers could be seamlessly installed on the Steam Deck.

However I’m happy that other launchers are available for those who go through the slightly lengthy process.

PS: I don’t agree there are 1000s of games not able to run on the Steam Deck, it’s mostly these games on the list. (areweanticheatyet.com)

I hate when a PC game is ONLY available on Epic Games store (lemmy.world)

Nothing more disappointing to me than seeing a game I might enjoy… and then it’s only available on PC on Epic Games store. Why can’t it be available on Epic, Xbox game store and Steam? It’s so annoying, like you have no choice but to use Epic… which I would literally do ANYTHING not to use.

xavier666,

I use Heroic and got all their free games. I also have Prime so I get more free games on Epic. But Hell will freeze over before I buy a game on Epic.

xavier666,

This is the way

xavier666,

I can give, but I’m going to sleep now. Send me a DM.

xavier666,

Game mode is way better than big picture because

  • support for decky loader
  • control system level settings from game mode itself
  • has gamescope which handles win32 game settings much better
  • disables other OS processes/the desktop and frees up resources (not sure about this)
  • control more things with controller instead of the touchscreen
xavier666,

The Chromium base, which is what Steam is built upon, itself isn’t supported on Win 7,8. Can Valve work upon it to make it backwards compatible? Maybe. Will it be a pain in the ass to maintain? Absolutely.

Also, if you don’t want to upgrade to Win11, you can make a 2nd partition for Linux and enjoy your games.

xavier666,

You’re welcome!

I have been very particular in this review about the experience of using Windows compared to Bazzite, not the performance. I’ve seen many reviews talk about how one is offere 5-10 FPS more than the other OS but you really don’t notice that most of the time.

Windows can do everything that Linux can do on average but the experience is vastly different. That is what I’m trying to say in this post.

xavier666,

If I had to a host a HTPC, it would be with Docker as it’s a more reliable way to maintain a service.

xavier666,

Hi, you’re absolutely correct and sorry for being unclear.

I mean precise TDP control (16W or 17W) and custom fan curves. I’ve used HHD, it’s also good. Most people simple switch between power saving / balanced / performance but wanted to go down further to extract a little more juice out of the device.

SimpleDeckyTDP is a bit tricky (open desktop mode - open terminal - paste command) to install but offers more customisation.

xavier666,

It’s possible I have to RTFM.

I checked the Bazzite documentation for the Ally and it says SimpleDeckyTDP provides more features than HHD so I didn’t experiment with it at all. I prefer using the Decky plugin mainly because it fits with the Bazzite theme better :P

xavier666,

IMO the only advantages the ROG Ally has over the Steam Deck OLED are

  • VRR with 120 Hz
  • Anti-cheat support
  • Slightly more powerful chip

In every other way, the Steam Deck is superior (interface polish, battery life, HDR, touchpad).

xavier666,

I would be happy if they just made sure it works with Proton. We would be seeing serious Linux native games when we have a 20-30% market share anyway.

xavier666,

Stardew Valley is a good fit.

You tend to your farm, help people, maintain relationships with people by gifting them and changing their lives.

Unfortunately, i play the game like a maniac. Running around from morning 6 AM till 10 PM.

(EVE Online, OC) If you understand even 1% of this video, it may be time to touch some grass (youtu.be)

I’ve long wanted to encapsulate these thoughts on contemporary safe spots. Sadly, this issue is terribly unimportant, and who the hell plays EVE in 2024, am I right? But the fire burns inside me nonetheless. And now it burns inside you as well. Bobspeed, Capsuleer.

One day, I’ll make a technology classifier which will take a small description of what a product is doing and will classify it as scam and what type of scam it is. It would also say if the technology is already exists or is a minor derivative.

Then the world will know peace.

Review: I spent over $500 worth of DLC on this game but I hate it! They never implemented the features community asked for.

Gacha games are out of control. Gambling shouldn't be so widespread

As someone who grew up playing games like World of Warcraft and other AAA titles, I’ve seen how the gaming industry has evolved over the years—and not always for the better. One of the most disturbing trends is the rise of gacha games, which are, at their core, thinly veiled gambling systems targeting younger players. And I...

xavier666, (edited )

Excuse me but I heard that the real problem with gamblers is that 99% of them quit before winning big.

xavier666,

I once spent $10 on a mobile game. You can get a special item by purchasing gems or by winning coins for which you have to grind for a year. After getting the item, i felt so disgusted that I gave up mobile gaming and shifted to PC.

xavier666,

Its not „just turn on“ yet but we‘re getting there

I think we are 99% there. If you make a decent AMD based machine, install Bazzite on it, you can set it to “Open in Big Picture mode on startup”. After the initial configuration in desktop mode (you need to do this only once during installation), you can just start the PC and sit in your couch. No need to download drivers or any desktop shenanigans. You control it using any standard game controller. No need for a mouse/kb; just start and play.

xavier666,

I think in the near future, game-passes will cost one AAA game per month. Otherwise, I don’t see how it will be sustainable business. Microsoft has already started increasing the price. I hope it doesn’t happen though.

xavier666,

If I could award this comment, I would have. Thank you, you answered a lot of my questions!

xavier666,

Minecraft has this wonderful mechanism where everything is dependent on game-tick/server-tick, which is independent of player FPS. Why do modern developers keep using FPS for game physics?

xavier666,

You mean if I just update my game on Steam, it will get messed up? I don’t have the DLC

It genuinely upsets me that Valve spent their time and resources on another Dota variation

Like for many other people, Valve single player experiences were one of my favorite of all time growing up. I considered both Half-Life and Portal to be masterpieces. It’s true they’ve always been distracted with multiplayer games as well, things like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress and I did play them for sure, because I...

Doesn’t Alyx have a fan-made non VR version as well?

Can anyone suggest some good co-op games for two people?

Hello all! My buddy and I finally finished up Baldur’s Gate 3 this week and we are not left with a giant co-op game shaped whole in our hearts. It was such an incredible experience and it was truly even more fun running through it together. We are excited to hop into another game, but we have no idea what to play. We’ve...

xavier666,

If there is a hot new game that I am interested in, Game Pass might be appealing because it allows me play a new game for cheaper. But I also don’t play games very quickly, because I’m busy.

Steam allows us to avoid FOMO. I’ll wishlist it, meanwhile I’ll play my massive backlog. By the time I complete one single player game, the wishlisted game is already on sale and the game has matured with updates. It’s perfect for the adult gamer.

xavier666,

I only buy games which are 5 years or older at this point.

Bungie being a bitch as usual

Steam Deck and Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running. Players who attempt to launch Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck through SteamOS or Proton will be unable to enter the game and will be returned to their game library after a short time. Players who are not accessing Destiny 2 through Windows and attempt to bypass the SteamOS/Proton incompatibility will be met with a game ban.
