xavier666,

This explains why Windows laptops just randomly start spinning their fans. Random energy consumption -> heat production increased -> fan spins

xavier666,

I just checked the games on ProtonDB. Two games are Platinum are one is silver/gold. Essentially very less tinkering.

Steam Deck compatibility is usually very conservative so even though it says incompatible, it will probably work. Nowadays, I just check if the game has some weird DRM or anticheat, otherwise it just works.

xavier666,

Don’t forget that Sweeney himself said that the Epic store is slow.

“Given the chance, they would definitely lock lips with the dominant male”

xavier666,

I might be terribly incorrect.

But i remember that Tom Cruise’s character switches sides in the movie after spending time with the Samurai (He was captured by them). He trains under them and becomes a Samurai. In the end, they fight against the (British?) and lose due to a gattling gun. All the Samurai die except for Tom’s character. So symbolically, Tom is the Last Samurai.

xavier666,

He also does not “become a samurai”

Correct. That’s why I said symbolically.

but you never see the character on screen again

I maybe incorrect but towards the end of the movie, the Emperor asks how Katsumoto died, to which Tom Cruise replies “I’ll tell you how he lived”. So he was alive?

xavier666,

I heard this game is a bit cryptic. You have to spend some time on the clues.

xavier666,

No one has ever denied the math wasn’t cool. It’s just that the usecase (NFTs) were terrible. I guess the hype has now died down so we might see some actual uses, like land ownership information.

xavier666,

It’s one thing to put those into the blockchain and it’s a completely different challenge to have a software infrastructure which incorporates the tech end2end. Example - someone put a random image of someelse else’s ticket into the blockchain. The ticket checker needs to have a checker app on his phone which can verify this in real time. It’s trivial using centralized DBs.

Hopefully we’ll get there one day.

xavier666,

I’m sorry sir, but I’m not an indie dev. I need to show the investors that my game will earn $100 million otherwise it’s a failure.

xavier666,

Bro, if you really want to fuck with Epic, keep downloading all their free games and not buying anything.

In their investor meeting, they will have to reveal that for every 100 people who download a game only 5 people pay for it. This will show they have poor customer conversation capacity. The investors will lose it.

Don't sleep on Retroachievements, big competition coming to beehaw & RA soon (docs.retroachievements.org)

What’s retroachievements? Basically it adds XBOX Live style achievements and global high score tables to retro emulation platforms. This added layer of social gaming and community driven accomplishment hunting really builds on the retro games emulation experience. The best part is you can get it running on pretty much any...

xavier666,

How do I check if a certain game has an achievement set or not? Say NES Contra

xavier666,

Ahh crap, I kept searching for Contra in docs.retroachievements.org instead of the original site and found nothing. Thanks.

The XBox XGo, which only supports games from Gamepass and Microsoft Store!

Note: Gamepass only valid for 1 year. Steam/Epic/GoG not supported currently

If you spend a little time on the dark alleyways of Steam, you will occasionally come up with hidden gems. The indies scene is currently thriving.

The Steam BulletHeaven2.0 festival has arrived

There are so many quirky game festivals. Previously, there was an ‘Airplane and Train Game Festival’ specifically promoting airplane and train games. This time, Steam has introduced a new BulletHeaven Game Festival, featuring games similar to Vampire Survivors. Many survivor-like games are participating in the event, and new...

xavier666,

The current way to play Epic/GoG/Amazon games on the Steam Deck is

  • Switch to desktop mode
  • From the app store, search for Heroic Launcher and install
  • Launch Heroic
  • Put login credentials for Epic/GoG/Amazon
  • Wait for your library to get populated
  • Install the games
  • Add Heroic as a non-Steam application
  • Switch back to Big Picture mode
  • Launch Heroic
  • Play games

While the number of steps seems like a lot, if you compare against the Windows equivalent, it’s not a lot simply because Windows has no Big Picture/console mode. I personally hate the desktop mode in Windows because I’m forced to use the touchscreen constantly.

What would you like to be changed in this process?

xavier666,

I have tried it but Big Picture mode in Windows is extremely limited because

  • Cannot change system settings (Power usage/fan-curve/FPS/Refresh rate)
  • Cannot add Bluetooth device (controller/headphone) within Steam; need to switch back to Windows
  • Floating windows interfere with application focus since there is no gamescope. You need to use the touchscreen from time to time which is annoying
  • No Decky Loader
xavier666,

what I want is an official way to install and launch third party games, or at least third party launchers from within Steam

While I think this would be great for everybody, but I think the money-oriented guys inside Valve would think it’s a bad idea. If you present an easy way to install other launcher to the masses, people will be swayed away from buying from the Steam store. Valve wants publishers to stay on their store; that is their trump card. I remember someone tried putting an alternate store on Steam Store and it was quickly removed to avoid legal troubles.

Windows absolutely does have a Big Picture mode. You can set up Steam to launch on boot straight into Big Picture. If all you want is to play Steam games you never have to use the Desktop on Windows either

BigPicture in Windows is extremely nerfed compared to Bazzite/SteamOS which I have detailed in this comment and further elaborated in this post. The tl;dr version is “yes you can use BigPicture but you still have to deal with a lot of Windows shenanigans”

Source: I’m a user of both Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally.___

xavier666,

While I don’t agree with you on the usability of Big Picture on Windows, I certainly agree with you on one point; it would be great if other game launchers could be seamlessly installed on the Steam Deck.

However I’m happy that other launchers are available for those who go through the slightly lengthy process.

PS: I don’t agree there are 1000s of games not able to run on the Steam Deck, it’s mostly these games on the list. (areweanticheatyet.com)

I hate when a PC game is ONLY available on Epic Games store (lemmy.world)

Nothing more disappointing to me than seeing a game I might enjoy… and then it’s only available on PC on Epic Games store. Why can’t it be available on Epic, Xbox game store and Steam? It’s so annoying, like you have no choice but to use Epic… which I would literally do ANYTHING not to use.

xavier666,

I use Heroic and got all their free games. I also have Prime so I get more free games on Epic. But Hell will freeze over before I buy a game on Epic.

xavier666,

This is the way

xavier666,

I can give, but I’m going to sleep now. Send me a DM.

xavier666,

Game mode is way better than big picture because

  • support for decky loader
  • control system level settings from game mode itself
  • has gamescope which handles win32 game settings much better
  • disables other OS processes/the desktop and frees up resources (not sure about this)
  • control more things with controller instead of the touchscreen
xavier666,

The Chromium base, which is what Steam is built upon, itself isn’t supported on Win 7,8. Can Valve work upon it to make it backwards compatible? Maybe. Will it be a pain in the ass to maintain? Absolutely.

Also, if you don’t want to upgrade to Win11, you can make a 2nd partition for Linux and enjoy your games.

xavier666,

🧑‍🚀 🔫 👨‍🚀

xavier666,

It’s possible I have to RTFM.

I checked the Bazzite documentation for the Ally and it says SimpleDeckyTDP provides more features than HHD so I didn’t experiment with it at all. I prefer using the Decky plugin mainly because it fits with the Bazzite theme better :P

xavier666,

IMO the only advantages the ROG Ally has over the Steam Deck OLED are

  • VRR with 120 Hz
  • Anti-cheat support
  • Slightly more powerful chip

In every other way, the Steam Deck is superior (interface polish, battery life, HDR, touchpad).
