That’s a bummer. Hopefully they don’t go fully under.

LostMyRedditLogin, do games w Lamplighter devs Harebrained "part ways" with Paradox as publisher decides against new project in the same genre

I’m surprised to read that Paradox rejected a proposal for a new Battletech game. I thought the first one made a lot of money.

Odelay42,

What a gut punch. Battletech is one of my favorite games.

I’m always held out hope they’d made another one.

Looks like we’d be faster now, creating a list for studios without layoffs.

Like 99% of people, I had 0 knowledge of this game before the flop announcement. It’s a shame because it looks up my alley…but if there’s annoying stuff like locked characters, it looks like I dodged a bullet.

@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a good thing they’re ditching Paradox as a publisher because it doesn’t seem like they’re any good at publicizing.

glimse,

The good news for me is that when I mentioned the situation to my friend, he said “oh it’s like XCOM” - so now I have a new game to play. I haven’t played XCOM because I thought it was Artemis, a spaceship bridge simulator.

Some people here are blaming paradox but honestly, I don't envy any game releasing in this period. We've had so many great (and expensive games) in the past few months but even if that weren't the case, personally I'm not willing to pay 50€ for something that looks like a blander XCOM game (or 65€ if you want the special additional character, bleugh).

Then again maybe I'm just not the diehard fan and their target audience, the only game of theirs I played was shadorun many years ago and I wasn't interested in battletech either. If I were in a mood for a turn based game I know I'd sooner pick up BG3 since their price is relatively close...

I’m not that far into it, but I’m enjoying it so far.

I obviously don’t have a deep insight into FDev’s finances. But they have pretty openly said that Elite is a foundation of the company.

And yet, they have done everything they can to kill that. Cutting back on social media spending to more or less make every single Influencer say the game is dying. Turn updates into a trickle of “You know that thing that was added two years ago? They finally added enemy NPCs around it”. And even actively screw over the people who were dumb enough to buy the ten year pass by not even providing steam keys for the pre-ordered expansion (currently on two of ten or so?) to let people take advantage of Valve’s CDN.

It is genuinely baffling. Other devs are, if anything, focusing too much on keeping the bread and butter live game “live”. Whereas FDev seem to have decided that they can do whatever to E:D and the money will keep flowing… which might be true but…

Also, should be obvious but: Lapsed E:D fan who bought the lifetime pass like an idiot.

Just to elaborate on the community streams more. Most live games have their community managers (sometimes devs) do a weekly or monthly stream where they play the game, talk about what is coming, interact with the playerbase, etc. They are almost all puff pieces, but whatever. FDev reduced the frequency of those (I forget if by half or straight to quarterly) which was IMMEDIATELY fuel for “Frontier is sunsetting Elite”. And it isn’t like they fired the community managers. They just… do less streams.

What a shame, I wish they had some spare money to pour into elite. It’s a great game that deserves some love.

Is the game still full of third graders hitting on any one with the slightest hint that it may be a girl?

scottywh,

My problem with it was the 3rd graders calling everything “cap” because they’re stupid fucking kids.

It’s a pretty fun game otherwise.

sebinspace,

I mean we had stupid sayings, too.

Fly. Hella. Dope.

Jiggy…

PraiseTheSoup,

No cap.

Sanctus, (edited ) do games w Lords of the Fallen’s Steam reviews improve as performance patch lands, devs advise players not to use graphics settings “their rigs cannot handle”
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah this was a messy one. But I used their default settings and it was jumping frames everywhere. Can’t really blame the consumers. Also, intro cutscene has been about 10-20 frames. I know a 2080 TI isn’t new but its not supremely ancient either.

LolcatXTREME,

Yeah having reflections or global illumination above medium automatically turns on raytracing. Setting both to medium should give good performance.

Sanctus,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

My point being, the only thing I did was cap fps to 60. Their default settings did everything else. Also, the intro video plays before you can change any settings. How is it the consumer’s fault if even that is running terrible? Lol

Piecemakers3Dprints,
@Piecemakers3Dprints@lemmy.world avatar

How is it the consumer’s fault

It never was. We should never accept their bullshit attempts to gaslight and dodge culpability.

Sanctus, (edited )
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

I will say yesterday’s patch did wonders. Disable cross play if you haven’t. That seemed to be a huge problem. As soon as i enabled it to play with my cousin my fps dropped back down.

Huh I have a 2060 and it runs fine at 1920x1440

Just clicked auto set and forgot. a few drops during cutscenes.

Maybe a driver issue for your card vs mine? Did you update drivers and rebuild the cached texture thingy

Sanctus,

Check my comment down below. I updated my drivers beforehand.

Ah cool! good to know.

I’ll keep that in mind as a tip for people.

Hope you’re having fun! This game takes me back to 2014 ds1 haha. Including all the rage as nobody knew where to go or even what stats did.

Can we talk about Rock Paper Shotgun’s horrible dark pattern with cookies? It took me a couple of minutes to work out how to reject all cookies, and even then I’m not sure I did it correctly.

I thought there were laws about the number of clicks required to reject cookies?

GlitterInfection,

I miss Rock Paper Shotgun. What’s there now is a corporate zombie built out of the corpse of a formerly wonderful gaming site.

Artyom,

Sounds like the system is working as designed

AProfessional,

I hate it, but it was two clicks. Manage cookies -> Save & Exit. They all defaulted to reject for me.

Why would you rush out and buy a single player game on release these days? You’d have to be an idiot of the highest order. This isn’t 1996 where we had a handful of game releases a year.

It’s like these gaming companies have NO Q&A people at all. Build a lab with a bunch of varying levels of machines and see if the game is playable. It’s not really that difficult is it?
