this is so obviously false it’s enfuriating coming from the head of HHS. Lots of coutnries all over the world have the same violent video games we do without the mass shootings.

“Switzerland has a comparable number of guns as we do, and the last mass shooting they had was 23 years ago,” said Kennedy, 71. “We have a mass shooting every 23 hours.”

“There are many things that happened in the 1990’s that could explain these,” he added. “One is the dependence on psychiatric drugs… there could be connections with video games and social media.”

okaaaaaaay… follow that train of thought just a liiiiiitle bit further bobby. Do you think Switzerland is stuck in the 80s or something?

acosmichippo,

is the news supposed to NOT cover what the government is doing?

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

Because they control the country and people should know what they are doing. It’s not that complicated.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s straight disinformation. Nevermind that everyone else plays the same games, let’s cherry pick the one western nation that has a comparable number of guns per capita and not think about that any further.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

the comment wasn’t about fox news specifically, it was about news in general. like it or not, we need news agencies to cover what these people are doing.

why should we exclude suicides and accidents?

also Greenland isn’t a very reliable comparison statistically since their grand total of intentional murders in 2024 was 3. Canada is ranked 111 with a rate less than half of US. UK is ranked 142 with a rate less than a quarter of the US.

acosmichippo, (edited )
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

Instead of making suicide harder, we should be treating the root cause of suicide

Or… both?

If people get hurt due to gun accidents, I highly doubt they’d be happy if we took their guns away, since that’s like solving traffic deaths by banning cars.

it’s not even remotely the same thing since cars’ primary purpose is not killing. Also there’s a very wide middle ground of options between “do nothing” and “take all guns away”. This is not a binarry issue.

Suicides and gun accidents are certainly interesting statistics, but mixing them with homicides just makes it harder to see what’s going on and arrive at effective solutions.

it doesn’t really. what does make it harder to arrive at effective solutions is making any excuse possible to avoid gun control.

If you miss old network multiplayer games, or would like to try them with your friends for the first time, may I suggest setting them up via SoftEtherVPN? angielski

Hey, folks! A lot of us here are pretty down on live service games for all sorts of reasons, but there are a number of great games that will always be playable thanks to DRM-free copies and low-latency VPNs that simulate a LAN. It’s been so, so long since a shooter was made for me, and a number of my friends are quite...

This could just be the vestiges of E3’s ghost creating a bad demo, but I was pretty unimpressed by this. look i’m not a ICE apologist or antyhing (these apply to EVs as well) but it’s not hard to figure out why car games are more popular. Also I’m not saying these are universal rules, i’m sure some disagree. But I think it’s safe to say these apply to most in the gamer market.

  1. more power and speed = more fun.
  2. Games are as close as most people will come to driving an expensive car like a BMW, let alone a Ferrari, or even actual racing cars.
  3. Even if you argue people are just not culturally conditioned to aesthetically enjoy bicycles, could you even really appreciate them in the same way in a video game? you’d barely see them.
  4. Cars are much more complex machines and that leads to each having a more unique character than bicycles, and that allows a greater variety of gameplay. For example, mid/front engine, ICE/EV, NA/turbo/super, FWD/RWD/AWD, etc. And usually in games there’s a progression from lower performance cars to higher performance cars.

acosmichippo,

what’s fucking sad is I don’t think this guy even realizes he has a problem.

One things for sure, I will not spend this much again, because you don’t get rewarded for it. As much as I spent, I should have everything in the game, but it’s not even close.

That’s what you say when you’ve spent like $100. hell maybe even $1000. But $32k??? This is so far beyond being not “rewarded for it”.

[Update: Valve Responds] Mastercard Denies Pressuring Steam To Censor 'NSFW' Games (kotaku.com) angielski

Updated: 8/1/2025 4:18 p.m. ET: In a statement to Kotaku, a spokesperson for Valve said that while Mastercard did not communicate with it directly, concerns did come through payment processor and banking intermediaries. you’re missing some context in that.

“The sale of a product… which is patently offensive and lacks serious artistic value… (such as… images of… Nonconsensual mutilation of a person or body part”

insert joke about COD lacking artistic value, but clearly there is more to COD than just body mutilation.

it’s also bankrolled by Tencent.

acosmichippo, (edited )
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

depends how much chinese influence you want in the gaming market. They are already the biggest gaming company in the world.

It’s also a bit hypotritical for chinese companies to be suing US companies for antitrust laws when the Chinese government outright bans app stores like Steam and Google Play in their own country. They get to have their cake and eat it too, then use all the money they make in china to push out further into the world economy.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

Epic is ~40% owned by Tencent which is a chinese company that directly benefits from Chinese Governement sponsored monopolies. China legally banned US based stores like Steam and Google Play.

Epic is not here to do you favors, they are here to push Tencent and China’s global agenda.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

in this case, the specific action gives the entity an unfair advantage in the global market. Epic (with help from tencent) is suing US companies for antitrust laws, but tencent benefits from exactly that with stores like Steam and Google play outright banned in china. They have the entire chinese market to themselves and use the profit from that to push out further into the global market by doing stuff exactly like this.

well DLC has always cost money on top of the base game so i’m not sure what your point is.

edit:

you’re ignoring that if you buy all DLCs you get much more content compared to old $60 games. If you want to look at this fairly you need to come up with some way of quantifying the content involved which is not easy to do.

I do agree that some DLCs are clearly designed as money grabs (like most premium/gold launch editions). But i disagree with lumping all DLC into that category, especially bigger expansions that release a year or more later.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

do you not agree most games ARE feature rich in the first place? I mean compared to old $60 games.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

which is a disingenuous way of framing the issue. if you’re including DLC you’re also getting much more content than old $60 games.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

agree to disagree i guess. i don’t find base games to be any less feature complete than they ever were. they fact that DLCs are sold on top of the base game does not change that.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

And, what makes the debate difficult with them is that they’ve always viewed adult content as a “risky” subject - due to higher frequency of support cases, chargebacks, general frustration, etc. As such, some processor that sell their service to adult businesses may charge higher rates - rates that stores like Steam or Itch are probably less willing to pay for 90% of their library.

but game platforms are clearly not your typical “adult business”. there are payment issues with adult businesses because they use shady billing practices like dark patterns, automatic renewals after a “free” trial, etc. I don’t know of any popular game platform that is anywhere close to that shady.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

of course it’s not unique but they take it to an extreme.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

what is “ultimate” about it? it never got any DLC did it?

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

the payment processors didn’t randomly wake up this week and decide to ban NSFW video games on a power trip.

they are being financially pressured in some way to threaten game platforms that they’ll remove their services completely. the implication of that is they’re worried about losing even more money than they make from payments on game platforms.

from the payment processors perspective, they’re thinking, “okay this is not a hill we want to die on and it’s a small percentage of our business anyway.”

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

Once this review is complete, we will introduce new compliance measures. For NSFW pages, this will include a new step where creators must confirm that their content is allowable under the policies of the respective payment processors linked to their account.

kind of a clever way to say “hey don’t give us grief, if you want to change this go complain to visa and mastercard.”

how does one “pressure” credit card companies to that extent?

also just because a group claims responsibility doesn’t mean they actually had anything to do with it.

@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

these arrogant assholes.

just like movies and TV, the waning interest in the franchise is only because you keep making shitty games with it.

If you people start making GOOD star wars stuff again, we WILL eat it up.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

this is nothing new, yet clearly it isn’t stopping execs from (rightfully) casting diverse actors. they aren’t cancelling a $200m mediocre show because of a few noisy bigots.

acosmichippo,

I believe it ws $70 USD at launch.

acosmichippo,
