I doubt they will find anything copyright wise, patent wise maybe if they had patents for some of the mechanics, but if they don’t already have the mechanics, and try to file post-fact that’s going to backfire.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

that would have been so cool, but I don’t really know how it coulda worked out, like an isolated horror-scape wouldnt allow for char development or anything.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ironically, I feel the community that is most apt to fall in line with their project goals, and want to support this change, is also the community they are currently outcasting. Personally I stopped using GOG when it stopped working easily on my Debian system. I shouldn’t need to use a third party program to get it to work, and I swear it feels like they intentionally made it so WINE no longer works for it.

For a project that is supposedly for open use and game preservation, they don’t make it easy to actually do so.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

inzoi being no devuno is amazing, I’m super hyped for it, I hope it’s good

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

they said it’s not in it due to restrictions on modding and hindering freedoms, I would assume they have no plans at all for having it any. ore as the rest of the post would fall apart otherwise, but yea i guess take it with a grain of salt if you like. I’m hopeful it won’t have it.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I have to second this, trying to get gog to work on steam is a royal pain in the butt, it’s like they tried to make it incompatible with WINE, unless it’s part of the lutris library you need to hope a launcher like heroic works. I didn’t have much luck with it but I know many did.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

not to mention they decided to block Linux users back in October. I had very little interest in it in the last 6 or 7 years, but I decided when a friend played it I would try to join, just to be met with performance issues and getting kicked offline due to their anticheat. So stupid. It worked for years in Linux, then they just decide to boot it.

I lost what little interest period in anything GTA from that.

My issue with the ruling wasn’t the ruling itself, cause I can understand the argument. It was the non-equal enforcement of it. Games with actual gambling in it were rated lower than a game with the similar aspects but no actual monetary aspects. That’s ridiculous. If you want to make poker 18+, then just do it across the board instead of picking and choosing your ratings.

It seems he wasn’t banned from Fortnite, just from participating in tournaments. So he may very well cheat in fortnite again, as his account wasn’t banned.

Being said, nice of them to donate the winnings to charity, half expected them to just keep the money.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

This doesn’t bode well.

The last time this happened was when Anonymous hacked PSN and took them down for a month after they went after Geohotz(cant remember the spelling) for jailbreaking/reverse engineering the ps3.

Radio silence like before as well. I hope they weren’t breached again.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Why would you want them to be breached? The only people that are going to be negatively affected by that are the users who was involved in the breach.

Understand hating a company but I find it to be pretty selfish if you’re okay with third party being affected just to fit your personal agenda.

It’s what separates the corporate tiers with the consumer level. The ability to care.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

What I’m saying is that you have to look at the bigger picture. Not only Sony would be affected by that, back in 2011 when they were breached consumers were charged in the estimated tens of millions of dollars range. A figure that Sony only ended up having to repay about 15 million in settlement fees for after a solid year and a half.

Additionally, Sony still managed to go up in profit that year, despite the PR nightmare out of it. Going up from 1.2 billion after operating costs in 2010 to 1.4 billion after operational costs in 2011 and still made 1.1 billion in 2012 ( after the 172 million in damages was done)

I understand hating big business and their practices as much as the next guy, but I have a hard time getting a sense of satisfaction knowing that at the end of the day the company itself isn’t going to be impacted by the hack more than a small itch, while fucking over the everyday consumer significantly more

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Thank god, this was well overdue. In my opinion though they should have changed the color to be the red backdrop like what they do when the game is incompatible with your system, because people are going to miss that notice since it doesn’t look all that different from the standard Early Access notice

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Just a reminder that no one’s forcing you to spend $100 on the game. If enough people refuse to do so the base cost of the game will go down again. Icarus is my most recent for example, I’ve had it on my wish list for almost a year and a half now, because I wasn’t willing to spend $35 on what that game provided. It’s currently on sale on Steam for $9.

God of War 2018 is currently $20 on PSN

I got Elden ring for $30 a few months back despite the fact that it’s still selling full price at 60.

If y’all are patient and wait they stopped making money on the game which means that they lower the cost to try to incentivize people to buy it.

Plus the first year of sale of a game is The Game’s most important release window, because companies generally will use the first year to decide how popular it was. If enough people refuse to buy the game at their original price point it will destroy their sales metric for the first year which will make it harder on the studio to justify to their parent company that it’s worth making another game, which means that they’re more incentivized to lower the base cost of the game within the first year of launch.

The rate of this is significantly slowed down if everyone is just like oh okay I guess it’s $100 now and then buys it anyway, have patience and hold out, especially a game like GTA 6 where they’re going to gain more money off microtransactions then people actually buying the game. Honestly GTA 6 probably should have just been sold as a free to play because they operate like one

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah, they won’t appear cuz they’re all ignored 😂

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

To be honest, they could launch the game as a 1 MB file that brings you to a black screen that says get fucked, and they would still make their money’s worth just out of the people who will blindly buy the game because they’ve been waiting for GTA 6 for so long that they bought it release day.

And then they could just move back to GTA V pretending nothing happened because the same people that would have impulse purchased GTA 6 with zero research are also the people who play GTA V religiously spending money on the micro transactions there and that isn’t going to cut their addiction

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is my ideology as well, not the piracy part but the I refuse to buy a game for more than $30 and that game better have rocked the internet in terms of how amazing it was. For prospective the last game that I purchased for $30 was Elden ring when it went on sale a few months back and the last one prior to that was satisfactory when it launched on epic games

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

They offer payment plans for a cell phones I’m waiting for the day that they start offering payment plans to purchase video games. They’ve already trialled with it with the hardware with the Xbox Series X launch with their all access pass, which don’t get me wrong was a great deal but, eventually we are going to hit the point where the everyday person if they want to buy a video game is going to have to do one of those by now pay later plans through like affirm or something, which is a scary thought. As is if it gets much higher than $100 it will qualify for paypals 6-month equal financing deal if you have their credit card, if this change had been just 6 months prior it would have already been qualified for it because they just recently raised their minimum so I think it’s like $120 or $140

Help me out: which looks better for the Duck - the neck tie or the bow tie? (lemmy.world)

So I’m re-doing some of my Do Not Press The Button (Or You’ll Delete The Multiverse) character models and I have this duck that is kind of inspired by the Companion Cube in Portal. I want to make it as appealing as possible so the players will attach to it and carry it around with them. Which looks better! I’m more partial...

Would "suggest price" be a positive option for steam?

I just looked at a game that is 60€ and said “I dont think its worth that and would buy now for 30, just to check it out”. Then I had the idea that some publishers/devs might benefit from knowing that 1-100000 people think that the game is worth X and would buy now for that price right now. In a case like today, the...

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think a good alternative would be is have the system, but have the developer provide a Target price listing of what they’re expecting and anything that’s significantly under that listing gets ignored

For example many people didn’t feel like frostpunk 2 was worth the release pricing and that they thought it was easily more worth around $30 instead of the 45 it released at, so Gamers could suggest that they’re not buying it because the price is too high and they could provide that $30 price point, unless that $30 price point is below the Target price that the developer has set as the minimum listing, it would be part of the metric. This would filter out the people who are abusing the system because there’s no point in using the system dishonorably because you don’t know if your metric is going to actually count where are the people who are you using it genuine and not doing obvious troll responses would not be filtered out because realistically they should be within the developers Target.

It’s not like these people are saying I would pay a dollar for this game when the games worth $40, they’re saying that they believe the price is too steep in that $30 is a much better cost point than 45.

They could even add a little bit of financial advantage onto it, by optionally having it so you can Mark a price point at what you’d be willing to purchase it at and if the developer ends up dropping it to that price point it, it alerts the user much like how eBay does with the suggest a price feature

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Well duh, if both consoles end up averaging close to $1,000 after tax then of course households are only going to buy one and that’s if they don’t just decide to go PC instead at that point. Especially with the cost of subscriptions going up again, it’s becoming financially draining

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I got the 1$ deal again somehow

this is something they do by mechanics, after your gamepass is expired for long enough it starts offering it again, I think it’s like 6 months of something. They want you to get it and forget about it or decide to continue the sub

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

My hypothesis of this is that, this is happening because a lot of people were unable to acquire the PS5 at launch due to supply issues, and by the time the supply issues resolve themselves interest was lost and the customers were like I’ll just get the next one, then the next one ended up being $200 more but since they had already missed the previous iteration and they don’t want to buy a downgrade they were forced to either stay with their current PS4 or by the upgrade.

My point is I don’t think that this is a sustainable model, the more they increase the price the more app that the everyday consumer is going to say man this isn’t worth upgrading between the base model and the pro model, and while they might see short term profits rise, instead of buying both models people will only buy one which will lower long term profits

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I fully agree, I’ve been slowly drifting away from consoles since the tail end of the PS3. For the price it just really isn’t worth it anymore for how much I use. This time around I ended up going the X through they’re all access pass because it came the 3 years of Game Pass ultimate, and that was pretty cool not 200 plus dollars a year cool but it was pretty cool, and then when the PS5 became available I got that against my better judgment because I have been Sony my entire life and I wanted Ragnarok (which I ended up never finishing).

I was juggling two different subscriptions for a while a PlayStation Network and a Microsoft Game Pass subscription, but since I still use both of them it was kind of worth it, then Sony increased their price without offering any competitive reason for doing so for any benefits so I canceled and moved over to almost exclusively Xbox until my ultimate ran out,

Now I have neither subscriptions and both consoles collect dust because neither console has a subscription that I feel is worth paying for, or offers any content that I can’t just use my computer for without the need of paying a monthly sub. Last generation was iffy, this generation there’s no way it’s worth.

Pika, (edited )
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

The hardware hasn’t been sold at a loss for years now though, the last console that they actually sold at a loss was the base ps3 which for 4 years even with accessory sales still didn’t break even, the PS4 had broken even by the 6-month Mark and the PS5 broke even by the 8th month mark

I assume with the PS5 Pro being $200 more, it’s going to break even by the two or three month mark

edit: added ps3 after base, apperently somehow deleted that

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah the subscription costs alone pay for the difference between the hardware for the PC and the console, they average 6 or 7 years between releases and the subscription cost is 70 a year, so That’s $420 over the six year period and when the console is $700 that means your budget for a PC would be 1,100, and that’s not including the fact that games very rarely go on sale on Console like they do in PC you don’t have the ability to do much gray Market side and you have no control over the system.

Myself for example, I spent between 1,100 and 1,200 on a PC back in 2016 that’s almost 10 years ago now I’ve upgraded my Hardware a few times, each time averaging about $200. But that was because I chose to I only really would need to have upgraded once and it would have been about a $400 upgrade, I’m spending less upgrading my system I would if I bought a console every time it released, and I have the capability of doing whatever the hell I want on my computer and I don’t have the financial drain of the subscription

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I plan on waiting until they just make it free 12 times like they did GTA 5,I haven’t enjoyed GTA 5 anyway, they scrapped what made single player good and had a super buggy multiplayer if you had a slower internet, the amount of times it froze and hot stuck in the multiplayer tutorial at my parents because they had a 5/5 so it struggled internet side was insane for something that was already on the system and was still SP

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

you jest but this is honestly what is likely going to happen.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Remind me how we have gotten to the point in collectibles, that we’re now paying money to have rare collectible items that have zero resale value due to the fact that you can’t sell them third party.

Like this is insane to me, because I was under the understanding that was primary point of collectibles, to obtain a card that’s super rare in value, but since these are digital cards and their value is zero it’s just spending money without possibility of a future return

Anyone else bounce around from game to game with no clue what to play?

Used to spend most of my days playing live service games that required a huge amount of time, or big AAA titles that are critically acclaimed. Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes I do I won’t even make it a few hours most times before jumping to a new game

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

yeaaaa no thanks. They are about 2 or 3 generations too late for that. After what they have tried to pull with the ps5, plus the price point and the fact that it would be a worse more restricted system than the steam deck. I’ll keep my deck where I get an overall better experience + no monthly sub fee.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

After the cluster fuck that was their previous release on top of the mass amount of actual DLC so I can’t just buy the game and run with it, there was no way in hell I would buy this game.

The last flight Sim game that I had was flight simulator x, and honestly even that one if I hadn’t got it as a gift I probably wouldn’t have purchased because even that, the amount of DLC that it had was outrageous, I was lucky enough that I got it on disc so I’m not bombarded with them all the time, but I had looked at the steam page because I was curious about it and man was I in for a shock.

I wish I still had all the discs to my flight simulator 2004, it did basically the same exact thing that X did, and arguably was better than the previous iteration of flight simulator without all of the stupid paywalls. I just threw the disc in and it ran, didn’t have to wait days for it to download, it didn’t monopolize part of my drive and it didn’t need a NASA supercomputer plus Internet to run

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

This is one of the most dumbest Parts of this game, everyone’s complaint of the last iteration was the massive download times, and the inefficiencies in the game causing it to lag even on high end systems. And their solution to that was to increase the specs that it’s required to run the game and require a high speed internet on top of that? They more or less made it so anyone running satellite internet can’t buy their game and anyone that lives in like 70% of the US that still has absolute dog shit internet speeds couldn’t even imagine playing it. My mom still has a 5/5 mbit/s, that’s the fastest anyone offers in her area, even downloading the previous game took ages there’s no way in hell I’m going to recommend her buying this game

What are your favorite 1000+ hour games?

One thing I have struggled with lately is finding good games to play. I bounce around from game to game trying to enjoy it but it just doesn’t scratch the itch like it used to. For example, one of my favorites was old school RuneScape, but it hasn’t really been giving me the same enjoyment that it used to. So then I would...

but today it would have to be minecraft. I have to play it in sessions but, it never fails to find a mod pack or challenge setup.

my fav one recently has been ftb: skies, but that’s a skyblock , I’m going to try the decursio project soon though, it’s supposed to be an rlcraft/sevtech style mod pack, so I’m excited for it , I just haven’t have free time to play it yet.

Pika,

the problem is, palworld isn’t “pokemon with guns”, they used that slogan originally sure, but palworld 100% shows more similar mechanics and concepts to ark then pokemon, it’s a mix of pokemon style mechanics and Arks RPG mechanics. I would say they had a stronger suit against trademark than they did mechanics side.

The only game mechanic similarity between the two is the ball capture system and the fact that it’s called a trainer/leader when you battle the NPC’s anything else is already present in other games.

By this logic, any game that features the ability to tame or capture monsters would be a pokemon clone. That’s far too broad of a category to allow as a patent if challenged. I personally believe it will result in them losing the patent as a whole if it is that patent they are fighting with.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

that would be a trademark or copyright suit not a patent suit. Patents are strictly mechanics, they didn’t sue on design, I agree I think they had a better case on that, but the Nintendo lawyers decided otherwise

I think Sims is a dead franchise now

After being incredibly disappointed by the release of Sims 4, I was someone holding out hope for Sims 5 that they would have realized, “Hey, people really didn’t want us to do anything multiplayer in Sims 4. Maybe that means we should go back and make an actual good Sims game?” But instead, we get this awful news that Sims...

Yet another reason that copyright really needs to be revamped hardcore. You should not be able to retroactively revoke a license in that way and the entire idea of yeah I license you to be able to use this for x amount of years is ridiculous to me either you can use the Media or you can’t.

I agree with almost all of your viewpoints , however I believe that steam has engaged in monopolistic practices. The difference in market share between Steam and any other game launcher is night and day, it is the online game store. That being said that’s not always a bad thing as they have shown

They have a higher than average fees that is for sure, but they also have a significantly bigger feature set than any other store out there. Like when you launch a game on Steam you have a game publishing with built-in DLC support, you have a built-in mod Workshop, you have the review system, you have a built-in DRM if that’s something that you wanted to do, you also have access to a community forum for bug reporting and discussions, not to mention you have the entire steam proton system and the VR system at your disposal both of which are Super complicated to set up stand alone.

Their Workshop, while it takes a 75% cut, is mostly for the Cosmetic items or the trading items were steam does almost exclusively all of the work for it. Basically the only thing the dev team has to do for it is upload the image for the item and the cost that it thinks that item is worth and then steam does the rest. At that point the 75% cut while steep, makes sense to me

Every other reason that they provided in that video, seemed to either hyperbolize the impact of it or disregard what is concidered standard. like for example pricing parity that’s an industry standard, any reputable shop has the same system, and if there is any place that’s different, they actively try to have similar pricing. Hell Walmart hires people strictly to go to their competitors to make sure that their pricing is the same as their competitors. The attribution agreement while I don’t believe should be legal, isn’t anti-competitive, it is anti-consumer but not anti-competitive. I am also super against the fact that technically every game is a license but again that’s not anti-competitive that’s anti-consumer.

I firmly believe that if a game competitor decided to have an equal feature set to the steam launcher, eventually they would be able to give steam a run for their money. Which is not something I can say the same of with companies such as Google which has been proven to actively manipulate the market and use their position of power as a way to keep competitors out, be it by making it so third-party browsers can’t use DRM, or doing things such as manipulating your web results that way your competitors do not appear. I have never seen steam do this

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s monopolistic practice is soley due to its market share, that alone is enough to. It’s a monopoly that isn’t anti-competitive, it’s inherently not bad, as long as it isn’t being Abused, many misconstrue anti-competitive as monopolistic, the term doesn’t go hand and hand. Monopolistic competition exists when many companies offer competing products or services that are similar, but not perfect substitutes. This is valve at the moment with steam. Alternatives exist but none come even close to being a full substitute. but that’s OK it isn’t a bad thing, but it doesn’t change the fact it’s monopolistic.

As for the gog thing, maybe it is easier than I thought, if so I’m surprised that no other game store has done so, steam dedicated an entire division to it and it still has a lot of issues with functionality and usage.
