Geek_King, do games w Space Marine 2 Devs Cancel Beta To Focus On 'Best' Possible Launch

My knee jerk reaction is that the rumors I heard that the game isn’t in a good place might be more then rumors. That sucks, I was really excited for this one, I hope it turns out great.

murmelade,

So ‘best’ = ‘most profitable’
Gotcha

Revonult,

My guess is that the game gets really repative because that is kinda the Tyranid style. Waves and waves of teeth and claws. Maybe some variations, but how long can you send swarms of the same guy before its boring.

I guess Vermintide and 40k version (can’t remember name) make it work but they are very different games.

TheDarksteel94,

The prequel had mostly orks in the beginning, but they sprinkled in some other enemies later on. So I assume they’ll do something similar here.

Badeendje,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Gene stealers, Lictors, a carnifex here or there.

bionicjoey,

Tyranids can have plenty of variety if you are familiar with the full breadth of their forces.

ChicoSuave,

Dark Tide hardly works. The “cultists” that are everywhere are usually chaos and die to a stern glare. The game has serious grind problems. The over-the-top waves of 40k make for really boring gameplay.

Honestly, considered it even though I haven't pirated a game in like twenty years. But when I found out the the person who cracked the game is also a hateful bigot, I didn't even want to download their work. Nah, I'll buy it second hand.

It’s all web-based journalism unfortunately. I just don’t click on them anymore and start avoiding the sites that do it…hopefully more and more people do the same so the trend can die

patatahooligan, do gaming w Epic Games Admits In Court That Its PC Store Still Isn't Profitable
@patatahooligan@lemmy.world avatar

This is very common among big tech companies and we should start treating it as what it is, a scam.

nova_ad_vitum,

A scam for whom? My epic library is full of games that they literally gave away for free. I didn’t pay for any of them. Hard to see how I’m being scammed. I’m not surprised that it’s a shitty business model though, and I suppose their investors could argue they’re being scammed.

jackalope,

They subsidizing in hopes they can gain monopolistic marketshare.

laconicsoftware,

How does them giving free games have anything to do with their desire for a “monopolistic” market share? Couldn’t they just do the same if they wanted any market share?

jackalope,

Because if you have to subdize to get marketshare then how are you going to maintain that marketshare once you stop subsidizing?

This has been the play for the last decade of cheap VC debt in tech. Wework, Uber, etc all these businesses operate at a loss in the hopes they can someday get a monopoly. That’s the explicitly stated business goal or Uber!

It’s not sustainable. It’s stupid and the bill will come due eventually.

Games as an industry is impossible to make money in unless you’re a platform owner. That’s just how it is. The 1983 game industry crash and Nintendo resurrection showed that. It’s just repeating the cycle.

JustEnoughDucks,
@JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

This is literally how amazon works.

They operated at a big loss until people were only using their platform and then hiked prices.

They literally price undercut up and coming websites by a ridiculous margin (20-30% sometimes) subsidized by their rich benefactor loans until they were driven out of business and then jacked up their prices to make profit.

The whole game is getting people using your platform as exclusively as possible and then return to normal prices once you gave enough market share.

patatahooligan,
@patatahooligan@lemmy.world avatar

The scam is that they undermine the actually viable platforms by offering something that is literally too good to be true. Then when all their competitors are dead their store will go to shit and you won’t have an alternative. When the time comes, you will wish you’d spent some money on a real store rather than play for free on theirs. See enshittification.

ampersandrew, (edited )

Eh, not really. Game Pass does have a lot of value in it; it's not the way I want to engage with games, but it makes sense for both Microsoft and customers. It's just not the proof that this headline posits it to be when you use a game guaranteed to sell millions of copies.

I can’t believe this made so made so much money. If I had a pc, I still wouldn’t pirate it. Millennials need to collectively get over Harry Potter.

Kecessa,

Millennials? Kids under 10 still go batshit for it!

pearsaltchocolatebar,

I can absolutely believe it made that much money.

Grass,

The youngest millennials should be in their 30s. I doubt enough of them have the time or money for this to blame the whole generation.

Pratai,

richmondez,

Yeah people really need to stop having fun in ways I disapprove of, totally with you on that.

GreyEyedGhost,

I’ve seen the movies and read the books, and I’m not a millenial. I also don’t have time to play all the games I’d like to, so I can take a pass on supporting the person spreading hate and occupy my time playing something else, instead.

EveningNewbs, do gaming w Leaked Xbox Boss Email Perfectly Explains Why Game Publishers Are Eating Themselves Alive

The suggestion here is that the type of game that can thrive on a subscription service is either a small one that benefits from better curation and visibility or a live-service one that can make up revenue on the backend by charging all the new players microtransactions (the new store shelves are inside the games themselves).

I’ve been saying this since Game Pass launched: it encourages scummy monetization. The kind of games that come to it are going to have more and more content locked away behind microtransactions to make up the money lost by not selling copies. It’s going to gradually become full of “free” to play garbage, and people will accept it because they didn’t pay for an individual game outright.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Of the two options that Phil says Game Pass encourages (and I agree with his analysis), one is the opposite of scummy and something the market could use more of.

Wandering_jaguar, do games w The First Borderlands Movie Clip Looks Like An SNL Skit

Realistically, celebrities get about 8 movies to perform in their career before my brain is unable to see them as some sort of new character. Kevin Harts comedy stopped carrying his horrible acting about 5 movies ago.

Croquette,

It depends on the actor. When you have an actor, like Gary Oldman for example, that really transform into its role, they can play in an infinite number of movies and they won’t get boring.

But actors, like The Rock or Kevin Hart, that just play themselves over and over again get tiring fast.

OlPatchy2Eyes,

To his credit, the trailer does make it look like Kevin Hart is making a genuine attempt to play Roland from the game. Still a weird casting decision.

davepleasebehave,

When you got movies like Tom Cruise in them, you can’t lose!

JigglySackles, do games w The First Borderlands Movie Clip Looks Like An SNL Skit

Yeah it’s relying in star power and the drooling masses to get money. It’s an awful awful attempt and it’s extremely apparent from the trailers that this is going to be hot fucking garbage. The only thing that would potentially save it, is if all this shit was promo trolling and the actual movie used completely different better suited people with better lines etc.

mPony,

if all this shit was promo trolling

we can only hope

TachyonTele,

I always wished a Batman movie would do that. Imagine going into it and realizing you have no idea who Batman is. That would be fun.

DragonTypeWyvern,

A villain POV where you see Batman dismantling the organization until the very end would be amazing.

TachyonTele,

Hell yeah.
Just remake The Usual Suspects with Batman instead of Kyser Sosey.

acosmichippo,
@acosmichippo@lemmy.world avatar

but then you can’t promote george clooney in all the marketing to draw people in.

TachyonTele,

They didnt promote him in the last one. So it’s not too far fetched.

Katana314,

It’d be fun to make it halfway through the movie to reveal Bruce Wayne is a worthless playboy, and have Barry Allen show up and explain to the current Batman “I’m here to correct a mistake. In my timeline, that drunkard over there is Batman.” “I’m sorry, what?”

AAA,

Not going to happen. Nobody can afford promo trolling because then people are simply not going. Word to mouth propaganda doesn’t bring the masses needed to pay the bills nowadays.

Kolanaki,

dangblingus, do gaming w Hogwarts Legacy Just Broke A 14-Year Games Industry Streak – For the first time since 2008, something other than Call of Duty or a Rockstar game was the best-seller

Culture warriors would rather play a mid rpg at $80 than admit that JK Rowling is a bigot who is bad at world building.

Silentiea,

She is a terrible bigot, and a loud one, and that sucks because she also produced a cultural phenomenon of my childhood, and while the canon of HP is only just barely pretty okay sometimes, it spiralled out from there and SO MUCH of the media and culture I’ve consumed and existed within since then has been informed by it.

So yeah. If there’s any comfort, let it be that any money she gets from this comes from explicitly affirming a trans woman through the work, as well as implicitly affirming any trans players through the character creation options. Small comfort maybe, but she is far away.

Zahille7,

That’s how I justified it to myself.

That, and there was an entire team of people working on this game for years, trying to make it the best vision of theirs as well as making it fit within the pre established world.

Yerbouti, do gaming w Ubisoft Wants You To Be Comfortable Not Owning Your Games

We already don’t own our games, because we can’t sell them. We used to be able to sell and exchange games, but with digital platforms like steam, we don’t have the right to sell them anymore, meaning we only bought the right to play the game, not owning it.

slaacaa,

You still can, that’s why - outside of a few exceptions - I only buy console games on disc, and sell them later

JackbyDev,

Not that there are many pro NFT folks here, but even with that approach it’s still just a transferrable license that they can change to be meaningless.
