I used to play the hell out of 1 and 2 back in the PS2 days, but I haven’t touched the series beyond that, and haven’t even played 1/2 much in the last 10 years....
Disgaea 4 has a worse story than D1 and 2, with Valvatorez being pretty much my least favorite of the Overlords (SARDINES! is not funny and never will be) but… is improved in every other way. Sadly it doesn’t carry over Disgaea 3’s “EVERYONE IS HERE!” policy in terms of the post-game/DLC, and neither does anything else…
I hope D8 comes back to that…

It seems like even Nippon Ichi didn’t like the characters, since the Post-Game stories are about Fuka and Desco and in one of them you even recruit the Tyrant version of Valv from way back in the past, who’s dialogue mentions that he hates Present Day Valvatorez
and… when Disgaea 3 got a re-release on Vita the characters who come over from 4 are… Fuka and Desco…
Valvatorez and Fenrich are mysteriously absent

Personally I hope we get 3 on Steam one day, it was my introduction to the series, and no other entry has the same absurdly high amount of Post-Game content (Disgaea 3 had a LOOOOONG DLC support cycle and I hope 8 does as well… I miss Prierre and Nisa)
Honestly I’m glad we’ve moved from “Censor out anything that might be slightly objectionable” (Like they did with Sam & Max for example, and I believe the GTA Trilogy got hit with a bit of this), to “Look the game is old and from a different time, what society deems acceptable is always changing, deal with it or move on.”

Might as well be comparing Resident Evil to House of the Dead, both have zombies, both take place in a house, both have terrible voice acting… but one’s intended to be scary and has very limited resources and depressing music to give that feel, while the other is a goofy action game intended to be B-Grade schlock where you just mindlessly shoot things
So do I, I’m not knocking it, but you play it for the schlock and awe, not to be legitimately frightened or experienced a tense environment… and in that sense comparing it to Resident Evil because they both have zombies in a mansion made by mad science, is foolish.
