Shout out to Vivi! Love you my little homie.

Exactly what you would expect from some bored entitled rich kid doing the job for fun.

ThatWeirdGuy1001, do gaming w Which game started this? It's everywhere.
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

Idk halo odst did this and I thought it was pretty cool. Assassin’s creed also did it pretty well (I’ve only played 1, 2, brotherhood, and 3)

It’s cool if it’s done right imo

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

The only game where I ever found this to be cool, is the one where you literally do that to see because you’re playing as something that has no eyes and has to use echolocation.

ThatWeirdGuy1001,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

That actually sounds pretty interesting. Do you remember the name of it?

themeatbridge,

I believe one of the Arkham games had a sonar mapping feature that did something like that.

Perception.

awesomesauce309,

I played a pretty good vr puzzle game like that, except you had to tap your cane. It was just called blind

eupraxia,

omg I just wrote a comment about a student project with this mechanic, wishing to see it in a full production and then scrolled down and here you are telling me that game actually exists! Thank you 😁

EldritchFeminity,

I like the way Ghost of Tsushima handled open world navigation with their wind system. Instead of a big GPS line or whatever that takes away from the game, the wind blows in the direction of where you’re going. Very subtle and works narratively while still being able to find where you’re going easily by just observing the world around you.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

It did that in a myriad of ways too, not even just the wind. Foxes take you to shrines, there are flocks of birds that indicate haiku spots, and golden parrots that lead you to pretty much any of the POIs you have not yet found. There is even an outfit that comes with a firefly that glows when you’re nearby certain rare items.

I absolutely love it.

EldritchFeminity,

Same here. It’s grade A game design.

sparky, (edited ) do games w Fields of Mistria is one of the most impressive games I've ever played

Makes me sad to see it’s Windows only given it’s so graphically simple and low tech. Should be a shoe-in for a Mac and Linux version.

Edit: yes I know proton exists, my point is that as an indie game it is likely built with something like Unity or Godot, and thus exporting a native Mac and Linux build is just a matter of turning on a couple check boxes.

Buttflapper,

Yeah, it’ll probably be quite some time until they have a Linux version. But can’t you download some sort of emulation for Windows if you really wanted to try it? I don’t know how that works though I’ve never used Linux

sparky,

Yes you can run windows games fairly easily on Mac and Linux these days but it’s never quite as good as a native build.

Schmeckinger, (edited )

I have had proton stuff run better than native. But it was probably a shitty native build.

AnarchistArtificer,

I don’t know how gaming on Mac works, but since I switched my home rig to Linux a couple of years ago, I have not once had a problem with installing a new game that doesn’t have native Linux support^[1]. I wonder whether developers have learned that they can rely on Proton for their Linux support (for better or worse).

[1]: there was a point when Baldur’s Gate 3 stopped working after a big update, but I fixed it by switching to Proton-GE, a forked version of Proton. github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom

sparky,

There’s CrossOver on Mac which works pretty well for most titles too. Not as good as proton but let’s say 75% there. But you might be right that the success of proton is disincentivizing developers from targeting either. Still disappointing though as a game like this is an ideal candidate for Mac and Linux, compared to some AAA title.

echodot,

Is it an issue for games with bios level anti cheat?

AnarchistArtificer,

I don’t think I’ve personally played any games with that, but I think it can be a problem? I get the sense that it may vary game by game, but as I say, I have no direct experience or knowledge

okamiueru,

What do you mean? Native Linux isn’t that relevant these days. Most games run well through Proton, and some even better than on Windows. Judging by the protondb entry, you wouldn’t notice on Linux that this was a windows game: www.protondb.com/app/2142790

irotsoma,
@irotsoma@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not a high end game, so it should be fine to use emulation like proton and wine.

Arkhive,

Obligatory, and please please take this as the most silly of jokes: pushes up glasses UUUMMMMM akchually WINE is a compatibility layer, not an emulator, its name literally stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator.

Again, it’s just kind of a running bit in the Wine community. The same thing is right at the top of the projects home page if my memory serves, and it is definitely easier to refer to it as an emulator. “Compatibility layer” just doesn’t have the same ring to it lol

irotsoma,
@irotsoma@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, just hard to explain that to a layman, whereas “emulator” is a commonly known word. I get the difference, but most people don’t.

Carrot,

This game works flawlessly on the Steam Deck, which, in almost all cases, means it will work on Steam for Linux through Proton, which is an emulation layer built-in to Steam

Road_Warrior_10,

Hm, if you want try the demo, it’s not the full game but a standalone level meant to mess with the player in ways they maybe don’t expect.

Berin, do games w Day 1 of someone finally posting screenshots from a screenshot-worthy game, until I forget to post screenshots
@Berin@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I mean, I like Katawa Shoujo as well, but there’s no need to be that condescending towards other games😅

sir_pronoun,

I was just annoyed by all those (lame, imho) Screenshot posts, I agree 😅 sometimes a little shade doesn’t hurt, though

TotesIllegit,

I enjoy them; they’re a small, mundane, humanising element in a sea of (often bad) news or game trailer links in my feed.

Though I also appreciate the parody.

sir_pronoun,

Thanks for balancing the dichotomy, my man

Zahille7,

They aren’t lame. The main person usually has some good shits in their posts.

Like they’re framed decently and it’s not just a random screen from their game like you posted.

sir_pronoun,

The content of that screen is perfection, dude

Katana314,

I sometimes understand the annoyance of poor content, but in Lemmy that’s a motivator to go put up better content.

sir_pronoun,

I objectively did put up better content! I’m posting content on lemmy, I’m a savior, light some incense and inhale deeply, guys

gaylord_fartmaster,

Maybe you think they’re lame because those are screenshots of an actual game being rendered in realtime, and not just a picture someone drew for a visual novel with some text over it.

sir_pronoun,

Funny that you would call rendered content more valuable than hand-crafted art

gaylord_fartmaster,

It’s even funnier that no, I didn’t.

But, if you really want to compare the artistic value of a screenshot of a game, one is equivalent to going out in the world with a camera and composing a photo of your natural surroundings, while the other is the equivalent of typing “anime girl” into google images and saving one of them.

Dremor,
@Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

Usually it is the same person who post them, if you are bothered by them, just block those two or three users and you won’t ever be bothered by them again.

Personally I hesitated to allow them at first, but it gives a bit more diversity to the community posts, and it doesn’t seem to be a bad things. For now I don’t think it is too much, even with two posters (the original and his… sidekick? 😆), but if the community subscribers start to down-vote it to hell (like was yours), then I’ll ask both of them to redirect those post to a dedicated community, like feddit.uk/c/photomode, linked by @Zahille7

sir_pronoun,

Thanks for your helpful thoughts on blocking :) I’m not that bothered by them, I just find them very boring and wanted to have some fun with this format. Boy, did other people here not find that funny xD makes this entertaining in a different, kind of sad way, I guess. Everybody taking everything so seriously.

grandma, do games w I make games and this literally happened to me this morning

They don’t seem to have an issue sending $10 refunds to my bank account, I wonder how much it actually costs them

ABCDE,

Especially when they’re making bank charging 30%.

smeg,

Complete guess here, but refunds are probably handled differently by the banks compared to new payments, i.e. undoing an error is probably free(ish), but paying people is how they get you

ryathal,

The bigger cost is probably the processing time, limiting to $100 probably drops the number of payments by 80%.

Summzashi, do games w Why is the community for Honkai Star Rail and Genshin Impact like this?

Jus your standard weebs

BurningnnTree, do gaming w When will they learn? When will they learn, that their actions have consequences?

As someone who actually bought this game, I can confirm that it’s not good. The main issue is that there’s not nearly enough content to be worth the $40 price tag. It just has a few PvP game modes and that’s it. It’s basically like paying $40 just to play the PvP portion of Destiny, except worse because you don’t get to build your own character.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I’d love to find a $40 PVP FPS. That has split-screen and lets me host my own server. Tuned to work with small groups and large groups. This one is just tied to a server that I don’t control and will inevitably die a painful death.

Canadian_Cabinet, do gaming w Wouldn't have it any other way

Yeah but you can play Mario 64 at like 20x default rendering

    50% of it is just me wanting to share the screenshots. I considered just dumping the screenshots without much context, but this way I feel like I’m building a habit around it and i feel like it’s easier for people to find, if they really want too for some reason, a screenshot they missed. I totally get why it would be irritating though. A lot of them on Reddit I feel like we’re really low effort posts

    Kerred, do gaming w And yet I still find myself choosing the Switch version anyway

    It is quite impressive how many games can run at all in the Switch let alone be optimized for it.

    I imagine either Nintendo did a good job supporting third parties for the hardware, or the money was so damn profitable that third parties were willing to shell out the money to find outsourcing that could make it run.
