VerbFlow, do gaming w We've had a few killer games recently
@VerbFlow@lemmy.world avatar

There’s also tons of REALLY good games that are made by small developers and cost about as much as an energy drink.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

But gamers wanna complain rather than open their goddamn eyes.

_sideffect,

Do you have any names you can point out? I’m always looking for some great indie dev games!

ICastFist,

cost about as much as an energy drink.

checks local price of energy drinks.

Monster energy can ~1.20 USD

Some local, questionable brand, less than 2 dollars for 2 liters

I usually only find games in this price range when browsing GOG’s catalogue of old games

Sylvartas, do gaming w Many are worth checking out

Well “far cry fans” are wrong. Far cry 2 is probably the last mildly risky game Ubisoft ever produced and was way ahead of its time in a lot of aspects.

szczuroarturo,

Yeach as far as climate goes it was great. The only unfortunate choice were the endlesly respawning guardpost (?) not sure about the name. But it was a massively ubfortunate point. It really made the game go from very good to throwing your controler in rage very fast.

Sylvartas,

True, the hardest difficulties were actually very fun, but the respawning checkpoints kinda ruined them

yesman,

Respectfully disagree. It’s the captured roadblocks that turn the late game of other far cry games boring. FC2 was constantly dangerous. Arriving at a mission start point was an adventure. You had the option to Leroy Jenkins into the roadblocks, beat a wide path around them, take the bus, or 30 other things in between.

That’s why the later games make unlocked bases into fast travel points, because once defeated, there is no point in revisiting anything.

Sylvartas,

You know what, when I played it I really hated these respawning roadblocks because I thought they were immersion breaking and “annoying”, but thinking about it, most of my better memories about random gunfights were around these roadblocks, so I agree with you, especially the late game thing.

GoodEye8,

Also far cry 1 was a completely different game and a decent shooter (for 2004). Definitely worth playing for the history.

Batbro, do games w What game fits this?

How has no one said WoW, so much time lost

Steamymoomilk,

Is the time really lost if you got a ballin new mount and ledendary weapons and have perfected your spe- yeah i should go touch grass :/

dubyakay,

The day I quit that shit, such a huge burden lifted off my shoulders. I felt the same with Ragnarok Online before that and a stupid gacha a couple years after WoW. But nothing was as strong as the WoW quitting experience. No more chasing that rare spawn. No more soloing the old raids weekly on multiple characters in an attempt to get that 1% drop mount or a missing transmog piece. No more dailies. No more arena/bg capping. No more stupid farm. No more relisting AH items every hour to undercut competition during sleep hours. No more gearing Alts so they can join main raids in case one is needed.

The only thing I miss is the gruesome rigor in our attempts to get realm first on an insignificant, casual pvp server, just to stay in top1000. 5/7 raid nights. 6PM to drop dead. But lots of booze and banter on TS. Fun times.

L take. GTA5 is a solid game. Never cared for online tho

PaulieDied, do gaming w Never understood this

At least Vice City had fun missions like dropping bombs in trashcans with the world’s most fickle RC helicopters

pfannkuchen_gesicht,

“fun”… yeah, not exactly a word I’d use to describe that mission.

otp,

Not sure if they fixed it in the PC port, but I enjoyed it when I played it last. I think I failed the mission only once, if at all?

I imagine they reduced the number of enemies or their aggro range, or raised the timer by a ton

HappycamperNZ,

I suckered at that mission.

Yet went great flying helicopters later.

Would try again

OfficerBribe,

That’s San Andreas. I loved all their missions and even though they also could be reduced to only, driving, flying and shooting they all felt distinct and memorable.

Invading Madd Dogg’s mansion and stealing lyric book and delivering it back OG Loc who had a party in your hood was fun. Stealing jetpack for a hippy, burying alive someone in construction site while they are in portable toilet, doing heists with Catalina, all that was fun.

I can’t seem to recall a single GTA 4 or 5 mission / moment truly memorable besides the line “Causin, let’s go bowling”. Maybe it’s all related to when I played SA and probably my memory was better then.

PaulieDied,

Your memory may indeed be a bit flaky, because that mission (demolition man) is quite definitely from Vice City :)

I agree with the sentiment of your post though

OfficerBribe,

Thought you meant New Model Army mission which also feature RC heli, bombs and barrels :)

I remember not knowing how to activate magnet and thinking that mission is impossible.

xyguy, do games w Earth will be destroyed in 12 minutes...

Wow! Spoilers much?! I can’t believe they spoiled the “Beer Ending” in the trailer…

I will say though that even though I know it will just be a text adventure, I kid of want to play it now.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, if you like text adventures, despite the difficulty, it’s one of the most entertaining ever. Douglas Adams himself wrote most of the text, so even if you don’t get very far, it’s all funny.

SnotFlickerman,

Starship Titanic is similarly incredibly under-rated, as is the companion novel written by Monty Python’s Terry Jones.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t read the novel, but I have played the game. When I played it, it was new, and it was really slow to load levels, which made it kind of a pain to play, but I did restore a good 3/4 of the ship robot thingy’s face.

And my god the parrot was annoying.

ParsnipWitch, do gaming w God I feel so bad for y'all

Potatos_are_not_friends, do games w I got to play Terra Nil, and here is my two cents on it

Absolutely agree.

I was actually disappointed at Terra Nil, as I was expecting to build a natural world empire.

I wish they did a better job branding it to be a puzzler.

What a disaster.

ZephyrXero, do games w GameStop’s definition of “New”

I worked at Electronics Boutique over 20 years ago, and we’d do the same thing. If someone brought a game back and got a refund because they didn’t like it, or they got it for the wrong platform we’d just re-shrink wrap it and put it back out as new. But the lazy person who did yours didn’t even break out the heat gun smh

Also, I’m not sure if GameStop even allows this, but back in the day employees were allowed to borrow almost any game in the store to try it out, so we could know about it when selling. And we’d re-shrink those too

Triple_B,

Depends on the store, some let employees rent games.

And there’s no shrink gun at Gamestop, just that stupid plastic bag.

Send_me_nude_girls, do games w Starfield has some beautiful landscapes!
@Send_me_nude_girls@feddit.de avatar

I still enjoy Starfield after 60 hours and the enjoyment is even growing. I’m sick of pretending the game isn’t good, just because the hive mind decided so. It has flaws sure, but which game doesn’t?

Some environments are amazing and change so much by daytime or weather. I love this.

GladiusB,
@GladiusB@lemmy.world avatar

I still find it very good game. The upgrade systems could use a bit better of a tutorial but I respect a game that takes a minute for a player to figure out the puzzle. Because those are the games I like.

The Mantis puzzle was a bit painful but I got it after a few tries. But the game seems to have more to it. I am enjoying just traveling space and seeing what is out there.

Spaceship upgrades seem cool. The shipbuilder has a good potential for a sandbox deal if you get enough money. Unlocking and upgrading is intwinded with the story which is normal. The dialogue is a bit overwhelming at times, but it’s space Skyrim. I don’t know what people are up in arms about. It looks gorgeous. It’s fun most of the time. What do people want?

totallymojo,
@totallymojo@ttrpg.network avatar

Can you tell me what makes it draw you in?

Send_me_nude_girls,
@Send_me_nude_girls@feddit.de avatar

I like the game as a whole. I could name you shortcomings of nearly every aspect of the game yet as a whole I have a really good time.

Some quests have a too early ending or sudden dropoff, yet they were fun and the dialogues were good. Building your spacecraft is fun, despite the restrictions on how you can rotate stuff. The points of interest are often kind of lacking, but then on I’m in space and I don’t mind mostly “empty” planets as that’s what space is.

It’s actually kind of strange, because I don’t like No Man’s Sky. I find that game so boring and tedious. While Starfield is engaging to me. I wish the survival aspects of the game were a bit more, as they got nerfed too much. I’d like to prepare for the planet conditions.

I don’t like that unique weapon rewards aren’t unique other than a name/skin. But the overall weapon of the game are fun and I have many in my inventory that I barely use because I enjoy the ones I main. (Meaning I have enough for New Game+ as I just focus on laser and energy weapons at the moment)

The environment often shines at night, the weather looks great and I like the music creating a good synergy.

I found NPCs to be enjoyable too, while I’m sad I can’t put two NPC of Neon in my ship crew (the bagger girl and the gang girl, sorry I don’t have their names at hand)

Space battles are fun and not too hard but not too easy. (I play on hard difficulty though).

I have fun with the quests too. Just a few days ago I did a side mission with a rough AI, that I could solve peacefully with Ryujin dialogue options. I have yet to visit Chrimson Fleet and do most of the main story. I’m just at the beginning and there’s so much great stuff yet to happen.

stagen,
@stagen@feddit.dk avatar

Screw the hive mind!

thorbot, do games w Starfield has some beautiful landscapes!

I wanted to love this game and it did suck me in for 30 or so hours. But once I realized none of the factions mean anything and you can just join up with conflicting factions and kill whoever you want and then just pay off bounty I lost all fucks. What’s the point of being space pirate if I can just kill other space pirates with no penalty, and then go become a freestar ranger and a UC shill and still be a pirate somehow and nobody cares? It’s idiotic

Confuzzeled,

I played for 80 hours or so, I really wanted to like it. I could forgive the sometimes humorous bugs and the endless loading screens if it wasn’t so boring. Some of the side quests were OK but ultimately it’s just not enough to keep me coming back.

ArmoredCavalry,
@ArmoredCavalry@lemmy.world avatar

I can never tell if comments like this are a joke. Starfield has tons of issues, don’t get me wrong, but I’m still playing it because I’m having fun. Why put 80 hours into something if you aren’t enjoying it?

Personally if I’m not having fun in a game, I’d just stop after a few hours.

Confuzzeled,

I didn’t hate it, as I said there were parts I enjoyed. I did all the faction quests and maybe 70 percent of the main story and just came to the realisation that I was finding it a bit of a chore. If I wasn’t having any fun I’d have quit earlier but as I say it just became dull to me. If you’re having fun more power to you, different people like different things.

emptyother,
@emptyother@programming.dev avatar

So no different than every other BGS game newer than MW then.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

You can’t join all 4 factions through to the end in Fallout 4. At some point you piss off the other 3.

And in Oblivion and Skyrim, none of the factions are really opposed to each other, until DLC with the Dawnguard vs Vampires.

Paradox,
@Paradox@lemdro.id avatar

So you got thirty hours of entertainment out of it. That’s way more than a movie gets you

thorbot,

It’s a video game dude, how is a comparison to a movie valid

Renacles,

The only conflicting factions I can think of are the Crimson Fleet and UC Navy, but even then you aren’t going around telling everyone you are a pirate.

Which ones do you mean exactly?

ArchmageAzor, do games w This should be illegal

“don’t worry, you can form a new 3-year attachment with Bogo 2 for just $29.99!”

Norgur,

Unless we sell less of it than the arbitrary sales number we used a bunch of estimated pseudo math on to ultimately guess. Because if we sell less than that number we pulled out of our rectums with a faulty Excel sheet, we'll just shut the thing down immediately. Because, you know... fuck you.

notabot, do games w This should be illegal

If people stopped renting games developers would start selling them again. Until then, the incentive is for them to keep pulling this nonsense.

There’s a difference between a game having online elements, such as a MMO, and games that require a connection just so they can keep charging you. Even in the first case though, you should own the client, and ideally it either has a single player mode, or the developer releases the code for a basic server when they shut it down.

kolorafa,

That’s why I stated that it should be illegal to promise product while selling a undefined time limited license, there should be a clear minimum time stated when you “buy a subscription” for (single player?) games.

notabot,

Fair, stating a time-to-live when you’re paying might make some people think twice. At this point though, I think people need to just not be paying unless they get to keep it permanently. Paying for access to the online portion is fine, but the rest should keep working and you should be able to get your data out of the developer’s system.
