X and Y introduced Mega Evolution, arguably one of the greatest iterative improvements in Pokémon.

With the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A in 2025, I’m thinking about replaying X and Y.

Scarlet and Violet were so disappointing that I too am hesitant about future Pokémon games. But I’ll keep my eyes and ears peeled to see how their upcoming games are. I no longer am a day one buyer of Pokémon games, after being burned badly on the rushed Scarlet/Violet games.

Not just Uplay, but also their activation servers. Their games make calls to their endpoints to authenticate if you own/access the game and DLC. If those activation servers are decommissioned without a replacement, your game won’t activate and you’ll lose access to DLC.

They announced they would do this for legacy games several years ago, and I was going to lose access to all the DLC I paid for with my Splinter Cell Blacklist game that I physically owned on a Wii U disc way back in 2013. Bought all the DLC because I loved the game. After enough gamer backlash, Ubisoft backpedaled and the activation servers remain for now. However, the concern is still there that I’ll lose the stuff I paid for when they decide they can’t serve it anymore or if they go bankrupt. Without them updating the game code or open sourcing it, I lose updates, DLC, etc.

We need digital ownership reform, or else it’s piracy time again. This will especially be critical when Gabe steps down from Steam and new owners are appointed, or if Steam goes public.

Sea of Stars, Marvel Rivals, and Superhot VR were the three games my spouse and I played that day.

It’s good to see clips from Loops as the Fediverse is trying to get their competitor to TikTok and whatever the other competitors from Facebook and YouTube are called. Loops can be a good thing but it’s still very nascent, so I appreciate OP making posts for Loops content to try to inform others and spread awareness. But I’d rather see an occasional cat video or something, as on Lemmy I prefer reading over watching stuff. I’m not the target audience for short form videos.

The short clip summarises the About page of GOG. www.gog.com/about_gog

Cool to spread awareness for people that are on those platforms and enjoy swiping through short videos. But here? Nah we’re okay. Plus I speculate the majority on Lemmy knows the value of GOG compared to more public places like Reddit.

CatZoomies,

Oof I never read that. Well that’s disappointing.

Random Screenshots of my Games #21 - Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (lemmy.world)

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an incredible game dealing with psychosis and mental trauma. It’s about a Celtic girl named Senua who is journeying to the Viking Hel to bargain with Hela for the life of her lost love. She literally carries his head in a cloth tied to her belt....

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

One of my favorite gaming experiences. For anyone reading this, it’s a must play. It’s not the greatest game of all time, but the audio experience combined with the heartrending story make an emotional package.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

So the camera is third person, but you of course experience the game through the eyes of Senua! You feel her courage, her fear, and her strength and grit as she pushes forward to solve her problem (no spoilers here).

While you play as Senua, you also get to hear Senua’s voices. Lots of voices, and it is an eerie and tough experience to get through. They will uplift you, praise you, beat you down, scare you, make you feel rotten. And it’s absolutely best to play this game with headphones - trust me.

I can’t praise this game enough. For me, it was about an 8.5/10. I only had a few nitpicks with gameplay, but the story beats, heartrending story, wonderful voice and motion-capture acting, musical score, art direction, etc is such an experience.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had no excitement for this game since Ubisoft is such a disappointment of mediocrity. I grew bitter to them back when they announced the controversial shutting down of their legacy activation servers: this would prevent gamers from passing the online checks to play their games. Suddenly, despite me possessing a physical disc of Splinter Cell Blacklist on Wii U, I learned I would lose access to the DLC I paid for and “owned”. Certain missions would also become unplayable since you need online co-op. Ubisoft backpedaled after significant backlash from gamers, but since then I hesitate whenever I see them attached to any project.

I miss old Ubisoft. I’m playing Beyond Good & Evil 2003 on my GameCube for the first time, and this game is spectacular! Wish Ubisoft didn’t become evil, but it was inevitable.

CatZoomies,

Does anyone know if the campaign is multiplayer? I’d love to pick up two copies of the game so my spouse and I can give it a go and play together.

I have zero knowledge about Titan Fall apart from the fact you’re in mechs and apparently movement is cool. So no spoilers please!

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Cool, thank you! I’ve been hearing so much about this game and would definitely try out the multiplayer.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Gracias homie. My spouse and I had to play Jedi Fallen Order on two separate PCs. It’d be great if we could couch co-op the campaign but it’s all good. We played several of the Halo games, I think primarily 1, 2, and 3, so Titanfall I’m hoping will be something that my spouse will want to try out. Thank you!

Edit: Heh. I’m the ideal customer because I have to buy two copies of a game sometimes. “Publishers love me for this ONE simple trick.”

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. I guess it’s that value proposition: if you have the time to play, and you play their whole catalog and have a blast, that’s $16.99 well spent.

As for me I love owning my games (where possible due to licensing and DRM), so the value isn’t there. But my spouse and I certainly took advantage of the heavy discounts they offered like the $1 month. I planned it so that I could try as many games as I could during that period and ended up buying them on GOG or Steam if I really loved them.

If their whole catalog is refreshed and they have another heavily discounted offer for 1 month, I’ll pick up a month just to try those games. But I definitely would never be a long term customer, I’d be a parasite loss-leader lol.

Regardless of how you feel about Game Pass, shouldn’t Microsoft (and the game’s publisher and dev) get paid for a game rental service you fully used and benefited from?

With my morals, that’s not something I could do. Definitely doesn’t sit right with me.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Fair enough, megacorps certainly are amoral in their decisions, which generally leads to evil outcomes.

Have you considered what happens to indie game devs, which aren’t megacorps? They list games on Gamepass to increase exposure. Microsoft takes a cut of the monthly fee and the rest is dispersed to the publishers and then all the way down to the game devs getting a small slice of the monthly fee.

When OP issues a charge back, the game devs aren’t getting paid. Is that fair to indie game devs? They don’t get paid if Microsoft and the various publishers don’t get paid.

Granted, I’m not justifying subscriptions. I personally dislike Games-as-a-Service as I prefer to own my games. But using a paid service, and then charging back against the company? Especially when it’s smaller game devs on that platform, too, hoping to make it big one day.

I don’t think indie devs should eat your ass, or the original commenter’s ass. Frankly, they need money to eat and pay their bills just like us plebs.

Fucking love the Nintendo 3DS. My favorite console of all time. Comfortable, fantastic games, great range of first party titles that implemented 3-D extremely well, and of course my favorite feature: StreetPass. My god I loved StreetPass. So much fun bringing it anywhere and getting that green flashing light telling you visitors arrived on your 3DS.

I played the hell out of the StreetPass mini games, and also enjoyed some of the implementations in various titles.

A Link Between Worlds probably takes the crown as my favorite game on 3DS. I also installed custom firmware on it, and when I’m not playing SteamDeck, I bust out the 3DS to play old roms. I have so much nostalgia with this portable, my spouse and I would play this all the time when we were dating too. I cherish the 3DS.

Wait are we talking about Persona, the spin off of Shin Megami Tensei?

I’m playing my second playthrough of Persona 5 Royal, and I love this game. If I can’t get to heaven, then so be it. This game rocks.

I learned about MissingNo back on the playgrounds and read about how to catch him. It said it was risky, but me a kid, tried it anyway thinking what could be the harm.

I caught it! I was scared of losing it, so I hit Save and turned off my Game Boy Color. Booted it up, and my save file was gone. Kid me was crushed, and I chastised myself for being so stupid to risk it despite all the warnings.

My first play through of Pokémon Red was wiped out completely. My first party, my certificate of getting all Pokes (that I desperately wanted to print with a Game Boy Printer my folks never got us), all gone. I spent HOURS trying to find Mew under that damn truck. All of it - gone.

Thanks Obama MissingNo!

User accidentally opens Uplay when trying to double-click Steam

A store banner ad shows ‘Skull and Bones’

User immediately frowns in disgust and tries to spam the X button to quit Uplay

Uplay privacy-invading telemetry captures an image of the user frowning via the webcam, and tracks the movement of the mouse cursor moving across the banner ad of ‘Skull and Bones’

Uplay closes, telemetry is uploaded to Ubisoft’s servers

The different school in 8 months after Skull and Bones launch:

Our curriculum isn’t doing well. This is not the curriculum we wanted to deliver. Players expect better, yada yada yada, you know the usual school’s apology stuff. We need to lay off 100% of teachers so as to realign, synergize, refocus, retool, and remoney our money-making money curriculum disguised as a “game”. We will do better. We hear you loud and clear (kind of), and we probably learned a lesson of some kind.

Ubisoft in 2031:

We’re pushing AAAA gaming forward, to grow our fledgling AAAA Gamer-base! We are excited to introduce AAAA-as-a-Service. We think you’re gonna love our AAAAaS.

Stay tuned in 2032, when we launch our connected AAAA-as-a-Service-Subscription! Now you’ll be able to get ground-breaking AAAAaSS gaming at an affordable value. Paid subscribers will get even more checklists, even more overwhelming map icons, and an even larger empty world with no payoff to explore to complete in our games! Do you love going here and pressing the A button? What if you could complete those map markers while not only pressing the A button to end the mission, but instead, having to swipe your credit card while timing the press of the A button? We feel this rewarding challenge will introduce a sense of pride and accomplishment in gamers, and introduce more money in our coffers.

Gamers:

Dude, just create new innovative games with new IPs that aren’t monetized to hell! We’ll buy those! We miss the old Splinter Cell days.

Sales of God of War on GOG might influence Ragnarok to come. It’d be great if Ragnarok gets ported to both Steam and GOG on release. I think Sony is very supportive, as I vaguely recall their only IP that didn’t do so well on PC was Sackboy, and it was because it didn’t hit their expected targets.

Darn, that’s what kept me from playing this game was the hope that it would go free to play by end of 2023 according to Gameloft’s early promise. I enjoyed it on Game Pass for a trial period.

If they keep free expansion content flowing, it may be worth dropping $30 USD for the base game to play it. However this is an online only game and I suspect it’ll get shuttered over the next few years if they can’t keep good content flowing.

Such a shame. My interest in this game has almost plummeted to zero now. I’ll keep an eye on it and see how it does while watching their roadmap, and perhaps in two years I might pick it up for a 70% off sale.

Here are the games:

  • The Quarry Deluxe Edition
  • Metal Hellsinger
  • Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
  • Rebel Inc: Escalation
  • Spirit of the Island
  • Lords and Villeins
  • A Juggler’s Tale
  • Mr. Pepper

Pay $12 USD for October 2023 Humble Choice monthly membership to get all this stuff for Spooky Halloween themed gaming stuff.

What games can you recommend that didn't get the appreciation that they deserved?

I’ve been recently been thinking about Arkane Studio’s Prey which is a immersive sim, with a pretty good rogue like dlc, that probably has one of the strongest hooks of any game I’ve played. If you liked Halflife, System Shock, or Deus Ex it’s definitely worth a play....

CatZoomies,

Agreed on the holy trinity. But even though you’re devout to the holy trinity, sometimes there are temptations.

Illusion of Gaia is that cool friend you haven’t seen in a long time who shows up, and you bond and reminisce like you haven’t been separated at all. Then you discover Illusion of Gaia has friends you haven’t met, and they roll together in a cool club called The Soul Blazer Trilogy.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Finally! I’ve been waiting for this for so long with no end in sight! I had no hope due to the Epic exclusivity and the fact that they announced that these remakes didn’t do so well on Epic, so future remakes were never green lit.

I don’t expect this to sell massively on Steam, but I’d love if it did just so we can get the next games.

This won’t be a day one buy for me (no preorders!), but I’ll definitely be picking this up for the nostalgia!

CatZoomies, (edited )
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Holy crap I had no idea this was announced. What a wonderful game, I can’t wait to play this DLC (no preorders!). Without spoiling anything, I’ve been curious to see what the world is like after the events of the main story. Tales of Arise has a particular ending that raised a few questions and my curiosity. I eagerly await to see what new story Bamco will flesh out.

The man who can’t feel pain, and the woman who inflicts it.

If you haven’t played Tales of Arise (or any “Tales of” game in the series), this one is incredibly emotional and tackles heavy themes centered on liberation. It’s one of my favorite RPGs ever, and not sure if it’s my favorite Tales of, but certainly up there. The second act is a bit long and grindy, but the whole journey, the relationships along the way, and the story beats solidified it. Gameplay differentiation, music, art direction, graphics, etc is also fantastic in my opinion. It’s not a perfect game, but a great game, so I’d consider it a 9/10. Others may disagree because of the lengthy and grindy second act, and that’s okay.

CatZoomies, (edited )
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

So, perhaps for nostalgia purposes, I hold Super Mario RPG (SNES) and Paper Mario (N64) close to my heart. Is Paper Mario: TTYD that much better? Everyone seems to always bring up TTYD, but I thought the first Paper Mario was a masterpiece. Trying to determine if I should buy the Switch remake close to day one (no preorders!).

Edit: I played maybe a few hours of it back in the day but never finished it for some reason.

CatZoomies, (edited )
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

That’s pretty high praise, paper mario 1 had such great moments and I loved the characters. Yep, I’m buying this remaster. I’ll debate if I want to get it day 1, since Nintendo’s taking a lot of money this year with Detective Pikachu and Super Mario RPG.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Oh really? That’s pretty interesting and a welcome surprise! I think I remember there was audience reaction in the game, which I don’t think was present in PM1 (it’s been +10 years since I played these games). I’m wondering if I probably should play them together and see how it compares.

CatZoomies,
@CatZoomies@lemmy.world avatar

Bro I grew up on RPGs - slow starts are my jam. While I appreciate faster pacing of games today, I won’t have any problems waiting to get hooked by a beloved game. Good to hear this about TTYD.

I checked out their site and found that Cassette Beasts was made in Godot!

godotengine.org/showcase/cassette-beasts/

This is a game I’ve had my eye on, since after playing Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and then Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it was a further slap in the face just how crappy the Pokemon games continue to get with each new release (it’s basically downhill after X and Y). Sure the story was good, but Scarlet/Violet was tough to enjoy with stutter, frame drops, hitching, and making me motion sick (and that’s just visuals, gameplay itself in a boring open world with no incentive to explore is also a factor). I’ve never played a video game that made me motion sick. I needed an alternative and heard about Cassette Beasts being a better game than Pokemon. I played the demo, loved it, and I was waiting for a sale. Now I’m gonna pay full price for this game to support the devs and their work with Godot.
