wildbus8979, do piracy w (rec) riseup vpn is a free VPN that supports P2P

Seems like a few people here have clearly never heard of Riseup: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riseup

It’s a volunteer and donation run anarchist collective that has been around since 1999. They have fought a number of legal battles against governments to varying degrees of success.

The people involved have close ties to basically everyone involved in Tor and should be regarded with the same level of trust (what ever that means for you). There’s also a lot of overlap with some core Debian contributors.

That said, I wouldn’t use them for P2P other than occasional use. Or if you do, consider making a substantial monthly donation. It’s a lot of resources to pull from a small organisation at the expense of people who need their services for political organizing, which is their primary focus.

The Binding of Isaac, just some drawings on the ground that don’t actually tell you anything.

That game is very good at introducing concepts gradually though, and plenty of other things you'll discover by accident, as intended.

I’ve been playing Divinity Original Sin 2 with my partner, we both never really got that far into it in the years we both owned it, so we’re trying to get more into it in anticipation of playing Baldurs Gate 3

GolGolarion, do gaming w What's a good game you played with an awful tutorial?

If you’ve never played Fear and Hunger, it’s really easy to assume that there’s no tutorial. At the very start of the game, a pack of angry dogs appears and mauls you to death. If you go through the front door, the pack of angry dogs follows you and mauls you to death. You can escape from the dogs in battle, but they’ll keep chasing you on the overworld until they maul you to death.

The lesson the game wants to teach you is “Hey, don’t stick around and fight enemies that will maul you to death”, and “Hey, you should actually check out the side passages instead of the obvious way forward” because the dogs will not maul you to death if you dip into the side passage in the very first area. The game has a lot of such side passages that you need to look for later on that will save you so much grief, but you have no way but to intuit that this is something to look for in the first place after being mauled to death by dogs a few times.

TwilightVulpine,

Is there a reason why the dogs chase you down an entrance but not the other?

GolGolarion,

Angry dogs hate spooky basements i guess. It’s pretty haunted down there

Not a new game, but I've been replaying Undertale as part of a large randomized multiworld. Every item or big event I unlock turns into a random item or unlock for somebody else's game. And random items in their games are sent to me as random items in mine (or another game). It's called Archipelago, it's really fun and there are games you wouldn't expect to be supported (like The Witness). It's called Archipelago.

chloyster,

Oh cool! I’ve been really wanting to try out Archipelago but the setup for it all seems pretty involved. Still really want to give it a try sometime

gk99, do gaming w What's a good game you played with an awful tutorial?

Gears of War 1 in online co-op. If you take the tutorial path instead of the right-into-the-game path, you can end up softlocked because it expects you to throw grenades at one point but doesn’t explain it.

I’ve been going back to The Witcher 3 to play the DLCs.
I finished Hearts of Stone and started Blood and Wine. I really enjoyed the former, but the change of atmosphere and setting of the latter is simply something else and it feels like a new game with how much content there is!

Last act of Baldurs Gate 3. Damn, does this game have a ton of stuff in it.

The third act is a bit of a disappointment though, compared to the first two. Not necessarily the storylines, or environment, but parts just seem unfinished, more glitches and bugs with quests, which is par for the course for Larian games I guess. It’s still great, and I’m thinking about doing a second playthrough eventually, but probably not before the Definitive or Enhanced Edition release in a year or something.

I hope to finish it in the next couple of days, then play the recently released Quake 2 Enhanced release as a palate cleanser, before jumping into the next bigger game.

finthechat, do gaming w What is up with Baldur's Gate 3?

It's hype.

I hate tabletop RPGs, so I know no matter how good everyone says it is, I know it's not for me.

Maximilious,
@Maximilious@kbin.social avatar

My nephew whom is mainly an FPS player and said that BG3 was not for him has recently picked it up and is loving multiplayer with his friends.

As a previous player of the BG series and others like it, BG3 is a far cry from any of its predecessors. I'm not stating your opinion isn't fair, but wanted to also give another account of players that don't consider this their type of game and are surprised to like it.

finthechat,
@finthechat@kbin.social avatar

That's fine and fair.

I know I'm just getting downvoted by people emotionally hurt by me stating I dislike tabletop RPGs. But my opinion is also being informed by my past experience with Larian's other celebrated game, Divinity Original Sin 2. No matter how hyped it was, or how clearly polished it was, I didn't think that game was fun either.

KBTR1066,
@KBTR1066@kbin.social avatar

No, you're getting down voted by people for saying "It's hype" while at the same time tacitly acknowledging that you haven't even played it.

finthechat,
@finthechat@kbin.social avatar

I don't see how me playing or not playing the game would disqualify me from recognizing the phenomenon surrounding this game as "hype." It's marketing hype, it's fresh new game hype, it's whatever you want to call it. The game is out, it's popular, people are leaving glowing reviews about it everywhere. That's hype.

Just because I'm calling it "hype" doesn't mean I'm bashing the game, I'm making an observation where I give OP a concise response.

oo1,

yeah, i like the game and even i can see its hyped in articles and on forums.

every time someone article has the word "polished".
it has tonnes of quest bugs, these type of games always do.

the ui is remarkably good - for this type of game, on steamdeck controller; but it's not a slick ui.

there's always tradeoffs and compromises. complexity of quests leads to bugs, complexity of player choices leads to analysis paralysis/tyranny of choice and cumbersome ui.

You nerds sure love putting words in my mouth. People need to calm their titties at best, or just shut the fuck up in general. Everyone's so programmed to just turning every single casual discussion online into a black and white argument of who is right or wrong. (That's you I'm talking about, btw)

Tell me you completely missed the point of every comment I've made in this thread without telling me you completely missed the point of every comment I've made in this thread.

Shilkanni,

Why is it “hype” when it’s not made for you?

finthechat,
@finthechat@kbin.social avatar

I mean, the snarky side of me wants to say "tell me you completely misunderstood my comment without telling me you completely misunderstood my comment."

Though in case you are asking in good faith, I already wrote above "Just because I'm calling it "hype" doesn't mean I'm bashing the game, I'm making an observation where I give OP a concise response."

To elaborate further: it seems like people are assuming "hype" has negative connotations where I'm actually delivering some underhanded criticism of the game, or Larian, or themselves as fans of the game, or themselves as fans of the movement of a non AAA game studio experiencing runaway critical success. I am doing none of these things. OP was wondering "what is up with Baldur's Gate 3?" and I answered. It's hype.

There are other comments from people explaining the fine details of why BG3 is getting hyped up so much and those comments are rightly upvoted to the top, as they should be. However, for someone who doesn't have any skin in the game and is only passively interested in this whole thing (me, for example), this entire situation can be described as excitement, exuberance, noise, or... hype.

Holy fuck I miss the days when words actually had meaning.

johnthedoe, do gaming w What's a good game you played with an awful tutorial?

Most if not all game prior to like 2000 didn’t give you tutorials. I guess they were in the booklet that came with the game so not in the game.

Super Mario Bros on NES starting point is the best. Simple and allowed people to die repeatedly to learn what the game is about.

Euphoma, do gaming w What are some open source games you can recommend for Linux?
GBU_28, (edited ) do games w I am LOVING Baldurs Gate 3

Loving the game as well but the character creation is kinda limited. Everyone turns out sounding like a Shakespeare actor, and looking too prim and proper.

I understand why that is, a game as large as this would be impossible to make with the range of voice variety I’m hoping for. Unrealistic on my part.

That said, the game is incredible, and as long as you accept what the character creator gives you, the models and faces look great

verysoft,

Yeah, was expecting a lot more from character creation, but it's just the same as DOS2. I mean most of the game is just DOS2, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, DOS2 was awesome. Just do yourself a favour and get this mod, it makes the game much more playable.

Kolanaki,

My first dude was a Dragonborn and that was my thought with the voice options, too. My dragon doesn’t sound like a dragon. He actually sounds like me, IRL.

riskable,
@riskable@programming.dev avatar

Yeah that’s the one thing severely lacking: Character screen voices. There’s only 8 of them!

They should put out a call to the community to make more and hold a silly contest where the winners get their voices into the game. All Larian has to do is release the scripts and provide somewhere for folks to upload the audio files.

They don’t even need to listen to 99% of them themselves! Just let the community listen to them and vote. Then Larian will only have to listen to like the top ten or twenty and they can have a second round where contestants are given instructions to “fix” certain audio files or whatever (e.g. to make them shorter or longer to match the cut scene timing).

Rhynoplaz,

That would be a fun idea! Probably a lot more difficult to implement than we imagine, but if I had the time, I’d totally record some voice lines going to get in a game I enjoy!

SCB,

Dunno why this is downvoted. My half-orc barbarian sounds like a schoolboy and it is weird.

Perfect is the enemy of good but I’d love a PC chatter mod.
