CrabAndBroom,

This makes me a lot more worried about the upcoming Mass Effect too. I can fully see the marketing department being like “this is our Guardians Of The Galaxy!” and giving it the same treatment.

CrabAndBroom,

Also Civ VI is currently 95% off on Steam if that’s helpful to anyone.

CrabAndBroom,

I could see the appeal of consoles back in the day, when they were weaker specs but much cheaper and the games just worked right out of the box. But nowadays it seems like they’re just as expensive, still not as good for specs and the games are just as bug-riddled as PC games half the time. And Sony has been releasing all their big hits on PC anyway so yeah really no reason for me to get a PS5 that I can see.

CrabAndBroom,

A game that’s like a combination of all the “…Simulator” type games like Car Mechanic Simulator, PC Building Simulator, House Flipper and so on, where you can scavenge parts and build anything in your base. Build a base & decorate it from scratch, build & repair vehicles, build electronic stuff like PCs and so on. I always thought each of those games felt like kind of like a fun sub-game for a larger overarching thing.

CrabAndBroom,

The thing that helped me felt very counterintuitive, but I ended up just picking one family member as a ‘main’ character, and letting the rest run on their own.

My instinct is always to try and micro-manage everyone in the household, which gets stressful quickly. If I focus on one person and let the rest just generate their own stories I tend to last a lot longer.

CrabAndBroom,

It’s funny how as soon as two competing projects (Life By You and Paralives) start to get closer to release they suddenly care about improving stuff they’ve ignored for 10 years lol

CrabAndBroom,

For me, it was:

  • You couldn’t get one for ages when it came out, so I missed the initial hype period.
  • When it did finally become available, it was prohibitively expensive.
  • There are no real killer exclusives or features so no particular reason to upgrade, aside from games looking nicer.
  • Sony is releasing all the good stuff on PC now, so if I want to play a nicer-looking version of a PS4 game I can just do that.
  • Steam Deck
CrabAndBroom,

If you have a Steam Deck, there’s also a Decky plugin that integrates it right into Steam so you can see how long the game will take right from the launch page. That and the ProtonDB plugin that shows Linux compatibility are super handy.

CrabAndBroom,

I haven’t seen it yet, but one review said it was one of the most unintentionally funny movies of the year.

Also Ridley Scott is doing a hilarious press tour for it.

Scott was informed of some less than stellar French reviews of his film – French GQ called it “deeply clumsy” and “unintentionally funny” – to which Scott replied with the following solid gold banger: “The French don’t even like themselves.”

But don’t think that insulting an entire country is enough for Scott. Speaking to the Sunday Times’s Jonathan Dean last weekend, he also reserved some ire for historians, some of whom have suggested that Napoleon might not be the most rigorously accurate film ever made. Scott responded by addressing the entire historian community. “Excuse me, mate, were you there?” he raged. “No? Well, shut the fuck up then.”

CrabAndBroom,

Frostpunk is my “try really hard to not implement fascism and inevitably implement fascism anyway” simulator.

CrabAndBroom,

Me and my SO had this idea (based on where we live lol) for a game that’s like Animal Crossing where it’s all cute and you build houses and a town for cute animal characters, except they’re all shitty crackheads so like you build a park and the next day there’s shit on the floor and all the streetlights are broken, you have to fish in the river to get old bikes and shopping carts out and so on.

CrabAndBroom,

I like all those kind of chill “X Simulator” games, but I’d love to see a bunch of them all combined into one mega-game.

So like if there was a game where you could find parts and build a PC like PC Building Simulator, and also build a vehicle like Car Mechanic Simulator, you could cover huge areas like American/European Truck Simulator, grow crops like Farming Simulator, build a shelter like Construction Simulator, keep the place clean like Powerwash simulator and/or House Flipper and so on.

It’d actually be really good for a post-apocalyptic type of game I think, where you could scavenge all that stuff and build a base.

CrabAndBroom,

I backed it on Kickstarter back in the day, so I think I’m only in for like $40 or something like that. I played around with the Alpha for a bit, but yeah now it just kind of sits there in the backlog.

If they ever release Squadron 42 I’ll play it, and if not… well I’m sure I’ve wasted $40 on dumber stuff.

CrabAndBroom,

Tomorrow: Songtradr joins the Koch Media family

CrabAndBroom,

I do worry about what might happen when he gets too old/decides to step down though.

If Microsoft did somehow end up buying them I might have to just nope out of gaming altogether. Or just take to the high seas I guess.

CrabAndBroom,

Also they seem really averse to Linux for some reason.

CrabAndBroom,

Yeah but just the amount of games I own on Steam already (not to mention the Steam Deck), if all that ended up getting enshittified by Microsoft it’d be like having to start over from scratch pretty much.

CrabAndBroom,

Also from what I’ve been reading, it sounds like nobody knows how their measuring system works, they just kind of tell you how many installs you had and you have to take their word for it.

CrabAndBroom,

Star Citizen as well. The game is ludicrously unfinished for how long it’s been in development IMO, but it does have that at least.

Trying to download/export, and convert 1000ish kindle books to get out of amzns ecosystem angielski

Does anyone have any experience with doing this? It’s not for myself, but for someone who isn’t tech inclined. I want to set him up with FOSS to avoid future shitification by azn. I know I need to strip drm, and then convert out of amz formats, but really have no idea how to do this. Any help would be appreciated! -j

CrabAndBroom,

If it’s for a Kobo, there’s also the KEPUB format which adds extra tweaks and features, that Calibre also has a plugin for.

Where do you have your VPN setup? angielski

I’ve moved my Plex server to Truenas Scale, and I’m about to get Sonarr/Radarr/Ombi/etc setup, but first I need to get VPN going. Truenas Scale uses OpenVPN and my current VPN service is ExpressVPN (which I’ve been very happy with). Setting up ExpressVPN with Truenas has proven challenging because of certificate import...

CrabAndBroom,

I don’t put it on my router because there are certain things it would kind of mess with (for example: Netflix on the TV would get all weird and restrict content if it goes through a VPN, I assume it’d slow down online gaming on the Playstation and I don’t really care if that’s anonymous or not and so on.) I could probably split tunnel that stuff, but for me it’s just easier to run it locally on the things I think need it (my laptop, phone etc.) than figure all that out.

That’s just me though, it really all depends on your preferences/threat model I guess.

CrabAndBroom,

I think it’ll ship, because EA has probably sunk a lot into it already. But there will also be a huge amount of pressure for it to make a shitload of money so it’ll most likely release half-finished and loaded with microtransaction nonsense.

Then there will most likely be a backlash like there was with Anthem and possibly Bioware will limp along for a bit, maybe become a support studio for someone else for a while, but I don’t really see them making another big game after this, at least in their current form.

There was talk of a new Mass Effect game IIRC but that could really be made by any of EA’s studios, it’s not like anyone who made the originals special will still be at Bioware anyway.

What are some game genres / styles you like that aren't being made anymore, or are being mde but not very often? angielski

For me it’s first person puzzle games. I can think of maybe a dozen off the top of my head that came out in the last decade. I especially enjoy when they’re open world. The ability to just quit a puzzle that’s stumped you and go try something else for a little bit is incredibly refreshing.

CrabAndBroom,

I’ve heard good things about Beyond All Reason, although I haven’t had a chance to properly try it myself yet.
