vettnerk, do games w Am I allowed to use a VPN with Steam?

In general there’s nothing wrong with using a VPN. And in particular, steam doesn’t care that my home network funneled all traffic via work for a while.

No problems here and I’ve used a VPN with Steam for years! Just make sure the location of your account is set to your country so you pay the correct price for your area. c:

If you already have an account, that should already be all good.

EveningPancakes, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of August 13th

Powering through Tears of The Kingdom. Just finished up the last temple I had. Probably going to go hunt down a few more shrines for more hearts.

Last week my launch Switch from 2017 started to kick the bucket, displaying a blue screen. I was able to get it booted back up once randomly, which prompted me to immediately resubscribe to Nintendo Switch Online so I could get cloud back up saves for all my games. After that one session, it went back to doing the blue screen and never booted up properly again. I really hate that cloud saves are being a paid functionality and wish it was a little more gracious like with what Xbox offers.

Fast forward a few days, I picked up an OLED Switch and transferred what was available from cloud data. Thankfully TOTK was there but I was missing a number of games I thought I had back up but we’re missing. Out of all, I think I’m most bummed about missing my Smash save data. Having to unlock all of those characters again now too. Everything else I lost I either completed already or had fallen off. I get why Nintendo doesn’t allow saves on the SD card but that really would have saved me some headache.

I shipped the old Switch off to get fixed by Nintendo, received it today but in the end they did not repair and simply gave me another unit, without my old data :(

Valve only cares if you're setting your VPN to a different region to take advantage of differences in currency exchange rates. It used to be really popular to buy the version of a game released for random eastern European countries with poorer economies for a lot less than you'd spend in USD, until Valve started cracking down on that.

As long as any purchases you make from your account are done from the correct country for the content you're buying (and as long as the billing address on your credit card also matches the correct country), the VPN shouldn't set off any red flags or result in any bans.

HawlSera,

Cool, so the only thing I’d need to worry about is if I actually went into my Steam settings to change the region, not so much the VPN?

Chozo,

Yup, as long as all your Steam Store and payment method settings match the country you're buying from, you should be good. My roommate games on Steam from a VPN all the time and has had no issues in the several years that he's done that (though I don't believe he's using the VPN to change his location, just to hide his IP).

TheRookReturns, do games w Am I allowed to use a VPN with Steam?

About 10 years ago my steam account was locked for 3 months after bypassing regional pricing. At the time they said it was first and last warning and the only reason they didn’t ban my account was I’d previously got approval to change the steam URL to redirect to a different store region to purchase a game not available on my default store.

Be careful.

HawlSera,

Previously got approval? Whut?

TheRookReturns,

I asked Steam support if I could change the store to buy a game not available in my region. They gave approval.

HawlSera,

Really? What was the game?

I’ll allow it.

hurtn, do piracy w On demand sports streaming?

just get this. all your live TV media problems solved. privateiptvaccess.com

SomeoneElse,

Isn’t that live tv only? No on demand?

ANIMATEK,

I just checked and the basic plan has 19K VODs. Maybe report back if you like it?

SomeoneElse,

I will. If it does work it’ll make a lot of British tennis fans happy!

CeleryFC,

Have you found an answer if it plays sports on demand? Thinking of signing up for this to watch the premier league matches in the US.

SomeoneElse,

No, but I have emailed them to ask. I’ll let you know if I get an answer/try it to see.

CeleryFC,

Thanks man!

SomeoneElse,

Hey! I had no luck finding sports replays on demand from an IPTV. But I did find a work around for this event - ESPN via YouTubeTV. It’s an American service so you need a VPN and US zip code - 11108 worked for me. It has a 21 day free trial and has all the EPSN channels (except plus) live and on demand. It wouldn’t let me sign up with my UK based PayPal, but it happily accepted my UK debit card with the American zip code.

CeleryFC,

What a legend! Follows up 3 weeks later with an answer and a work around solution! Love it! Thanks brother, you deserve all the best in this world.

SomeoneElse,

You’re welcome! I forgot to say, if it helps in future I did find some decent live coverage on IPTV, much better than sky sports and ESPN imo. The Australian channel Stan had a dedicated channel for every court (Stan sports 1-19), commentary on every main draw match and no adverts. It was better than the live sports streaming websites. Have a good one 👍🏼

I exclusively use a VPN with everything and have done so for years. If steam has an issue, they have yet to inform me lol.

On a serious note tho, there is an issue if you use a VPN to access store prices for a country outside your own. Regional pricing means that some people game the system and Valve rightfully cares about that.

HawlSera,

Yeah I changed it so my VPN says I’m in America for this reason

Scrof,

You don’t have to, your regional price is linked to your account’s regional setting so that if you move you can legitimately change your region but VPN doesn’t affect it at all.

HawlSera,

still…

I haven’t had any issues. I’ve used one for about 6 months. It never even occurred to me it might be a problem with Steam.

circuitfarmer, do gaming w If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I would 100% be buying things on GOG whenever possible – if they had a Linux client.

Because they don’t, the convenience of Steam and Proton integration generally offsets concerns I have about losing access to things if Steam ever goes under. It’s a tradeoff.

But then you’d have a myriad of arguably worse problems.

You could try different patch options, but I recommend supporting the developer by actually buying it. If you don’t want to, use a free and open-source client like Voyager.

akincisor,

Yeah, it’s one thing to steal from “The Man” and quite another to steal from an individual developer.
