newthrowaway20, w Starfield Paid DLSS Mod Creator Hits Back at Pirates, Threatens to Add 'Hidden Mines' in Future Mods

Wow. Talk about ensuring no one uses your mods again.

Sharpiemarker,

Because they want to get paid for their work?

newthrowaway20,

I have no problem with someone getting paid for their work. In fact, I encourage people to get paid for their work. But if you decide to sabotage your own product for the sake of attacking people who refuse to pay for it, you just make your product worse for everyone who did pay for it and you do nothing to actually solve the piracy issue. In that case, you’re reaping what you sow.

Sharpiemarker,

Did none of you read the article?

The modder, PureDark is talking about putting in anti-theft mines into their mods. Exactly like the Mad Max game where you can’t win and it makes it impossibly difficult if you’re playing a cracked copy. Below is the quote from the article, emphasis mine.

PureDark also responded to how quickly the Starfield mod was cracked.
"It was expected since it was something I put together within a day or two, but I did get enough patrons so it’s done its job. So from now on I will place hidden mines in all my mods to make it harder for these people.

Wow a day or two of work and you earn probably 200k+ from it, crazy. Guess he is hurting for cash or he see’s the end of the cash train as other people start making equivalent mods. Or maybe he is afraid of bethesda/nividia/amd coming down on him.

    abraxas, (edited )

Others’ estimates put his earnings over $500k (at least if it remains relevant for a year).

    Jakeroxs,

It’s a day of work to implement the DRM, not the mod itself, which he did release day 1 for free on Nexus, only the frame gen version is behind the patreon wall, additionally he’s released many such DLSS+FG mods for various games (which all come with the sub) so he has a lot of experience implementing it and has clearly gotten it down pretty well.

Every game has its own challenges but Starfield was particularly easy (according to him) because of how FSR was implemented

    raptir,

That… is not at all specified what kind of “mine” it would be. You’re assuming it’s innocuous, everyone else is assuming it’s malicious. But we’re all making assumptions.

    Sharpiemarker,

Based on the context it would only affect people who pirate it.

    InEnduringGrowStrong,
    @InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

Or people who trigger some false positive in whatever way they implement such a piracy detection.

    NOPper,

Which has never happened in the history of forever and I’m sure this will go just fine after he spent a whole two days implementing DRM in the first place.

    CancerMancer,

The Special-K mods have a history of false positives so it’s not like this is a new problem.

    A_Random_Idiot,

There is a great vibrant history of people being fucked by false positives.

Which is why the whole “It doesnt make mistakes, you filthy fucking cheater” mentality is astonishingly stupid.

Wasnt there a time when Winamp was triggering false positives and triggering bans?

    russjr08,
    @russjr08@outpost.zeuslink.net avatar

Right, just like Denuovo only impacts people who pirate games that use it.

Or DRM only impacts the people who pirate movies and TV.

    A_Random_Idiot,

    Hahaha.

Sorry, I dont mean to laugh, but where have you been?

The bulk of gamers only care about their instant gratification. If they actually were capable of taking a stand then there’d be a lot less awful companies pulling in billion dollar+ game releases.

JokeDeity, w Dusk: Unpopular opinion: I'd rather pay Valve 30% and put up with their de facto monopoly than help Epic work towards their own (very obviously desired) monopoly

Valve may not be the cheapest by any means, but that’s because they’re offering a product 30x as valuable. The other launchers companies have are shit, across the board, nothing but shit. It’s not even in the same continent. If any one of these companies actually wants to ever see this change, they are going to have to set their greed aside. That’s impossible for CEOs in this day and age, so I don’t see Steam ever losing their stranglehold unless they do an about-face from everything they’ve done so far. In the grand scheme of things, Valve is one of the most customer friendly companies on the face of the Earth and they continue to be innovative and supportive to users. Epic on the other hand is everything wrong with capitalism, and much the same can be said for any of the other companies with competing launchers/game stores.

    crab,

What’s so wrong with Epic? I prefer Steam but Epics client has a better UI, I haven’t found any problems, and deals seem better than Steam, especially with free games.

    natryamar,

No communities, no guides, no VR , no game streaming, annoying download manager, annoying friends tab, no steam deck, no game collections AFAIK. When Fall Guys came out for free I gave the Epic launcher a real chance and it was incredibly limited in it functionality and frustrating to use compared to Steam.

Steam is shaping up to be your all in one library for anything games be it PC, VR or portable. The Switch, Quest, Playstation, Xbox and Epic launcher all offer a piece of that experience but having a unified platform that syncs your saves and doesn’t nickel and dime you for features and accessories is why Steam is more popular.

I haven’t been using Epic enough to really compare with Steam sales but stuff gets really cheap on steam really fast. I would also gladly buy my games for money on Steam just to be able to play them easily on my Steam Deck. Also Epic is only doing the free games because they have unreal and Fortnite money, there’s no telling when the free games will stop.

    crab,

You’re right about most things, and Linux/VR support is often a deal breaker for me so I rarely use Epic. But you really think its that unusable? I’ve heard mostly positive things from my friends. I don’t care how or why they’re giving out free games but its a huge plus. I just really don’t understand all the hate.

    natryamar,

I remembered some more stuff epic doesn’t have. Steam input and launch option customization. I can play Civ 6, a game meant for kbm, on my steam deck with the controller buttons. Epic obscures their exe files to make it hard to know which to add as a non steam game to steam.

It was annoying to go from steam with it’s deep and helpful functionality to epic with what essentially just feels like the iOS appstore. I especially hate being forced to use epic online services on a game I bought ON STEAM. I couldn’t play the sackboy game with a friend on steam deck because something along the way broke and epic services wouldn’t let me. This game is P2P there’s definitely no servers being involved so why the heck can’t they just use steamworks?

Epic being unusable is a bit of an exaggeration but in terms of the platform they offer it is inferior to steam in every single way and they have done almost zero to make up the gap. Instead they pay money to keep games away from steam and force you to use their launcher in the most annoying and inconvenient way. That’s why they get so much hate from people.

    Gabu,

Adding to what Natryamar said, epic once bundled actual malware with their client and is partially owned by Tencent, the chinese company known for turning games into garbage.

deweydecibel, w 'Baldur's Gate 3' Is a Staggering Success and a Once in a Decade RPG

I said it once before but this is exactly the game that needed to come out after Final Fantasy 16, and Dragon Age Dreadwolf’s bullshit is going to look even worse in this game’s shadow. Just to shut up the think pieces and comment sections that claim RPGs becoming God of War clones is somehow the only “modern” direction to take them.

jaycifer, w DC Comics adamant The Wolf Among Us' source material is not in the public domain, as its creator calls them 'thugs and conmen' and insists it is

I was reading a blog post that talks about exactly how much the author is able to put in the public domain. My understanding is that Willingham has a fairly individualized contract with DC that he is grandfathered in on and is rather abnormal nowadays and gives him more control. DC has been trying to, as stated above, “reinterpret” that contract to give them more control.

Essentially, DC may own the rights to the individual products they published, but the world and characters Willingham created can be used outside of those in new or reimagined context.

    paysrenttobirds,

Thanks for that link, amazing. I didn’t realize how unlikely US is to change copyright length, or how important the creative commons license was

    roguetrick,

That creates a significant can of worms in regards to what parts of the character are derived from the source material that is owned by DC. See not allowing sherlock holmes to smile for an example.

2k12 was probably the best one. 11 years ago.

    BleatingZombie,

I still have that one for 360! I was never very good, but it’s always a ton of fun to play

In my uneducated opinion, it feels like the gaming industry advanced past “quarter-eating” mechanics and have reverse engineered their way back there. The rubber-banding doesn’t feel fun/competitive anymore. Even playing solo just feels like it’s just trying to give you a taste of success in an attempt to get you to spend real money. Those of us who won’t ever “pay-to-win” just see an arbitrarily difficult or awkward game. For example, one of the later ones feels like it changes the player speed drastically based on who IT wants to do better now

    520,

EDIT: just read the article. i forget that for the PC version they keep using the last gen version of the game lol, how difficult is it to use the current gen version?

    BlinkerFluid,
    @BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one avatar

Yeah, modders could’ve filled it out into a full release by now.

    AngrilyEatingMuffins,

it's definitely a full release. i'm like 20 hours in and just scratching the surface with no real bugs to speak of. it's just not mind-blowingly amazing and there are too many loading screens. it's fun enough to entertain me until phantom liberty drops.

    all-knight-party,
    @all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

Agreed. Holy fuck are there so many unique quests with full voicing (at about 20 hours in). I've heard people say they aren't getting that "losing yourself accidentally seeing five different POIs", but it's definitely still there in a different package.

I get that by going to do one quest, having to stop off at other planets along the way, where I'll poke my head in and talk to whatever named NPCs I see, who'll inevitably give me a few quests, some of which lead to other places where I'll pick up other quests.

It was especially apparent with some random side quest somebody gave me in New Atlantis where I just had to go get a dead drop package from some other planet, which turned out to be the site of the Red Mile which is its own sort of arena/quest that I then enjoyed in the middle of the other quest. I've just been ping ponging around like that picking up stuff and stopping now and again to knock a few out.

    PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

    dsemy,

Man people are really entitled these days…

The game is fine, and what most people who play Bethesda RPGs expected (or even better).

Also, if I’m not mistaken, previous Beth RPGs released without official mod support and had it added later as well. Almost no game by any company has released with official mod support; almost no game even has official mod support.

Pratai, w More than Skyrim or Fallout, Todd Howard says Starfield was "intentionally made to be played for a long time" and Bethesda's looking 5+ years ahead

    Gamey,

Everyone likes to shit on Epic so it’s probably not a very unpopular opinion ether but there is a big difference between the App and Play store and Steam, only one of them doesn’t use anti-competiive practices and the other two also force their payment provider which is rather shitty!

    its a solid B

    75/100

    It's good.

It's not earth shattering, its not game of the year.

It scratches that Skyrim RPG itch but in space.

It's less buggy and less crashy than people were expecting.

    It's not without its flaws.

    It's a solid B

    CaptPretentious,

This might be the most concise and accurate review I’ve seen. Nothing long winded, no excuses, no fanboyism, being fair and holding it up as it is.

    lemmyvore,

That wasn’t a review, it was a bunch of statements stringed together. At most it could be the conclusion of a review.

A review needs to offer some explanations about what’s good (or bad) and why.

    Rai,

You didn’t comment. You just said a bunch of words stringed together.

    Cethin,

Personally I’d give it like a C or maybe B- at the top. It’s fine, but there are so many missing basic quality of life features that should be there.

My biggest gripes are all focused on outposts though. Outposts seemed to be one of the focuses from the marketing material, but they’re a pain in the ass to actually use. There’s somehow no list of the outposts you have, let alone a way to view what they’re producing. Outposts need to be linked together, but there’s no way to sort or auto-delete items, so it all eventually will get clogged up with lead, or whatever other resource doesn’t get used often. You’ll have to manually go through your containers to remove the clog and just dump it on the ground, where it’ll remain for the rest of your playthrough. There’s no snapping for anything except storage containers and the habitation modules. Everything else has to be placed by hand with manual rotations, so nothing is ever lined up. The alignment will also change after you place an object, so literally nothing will ever be aligned.

I have issues with many other parts of the game too, but outposts seem so incomplete, and somehow generally worse than what we had in FO4. Yet, outposts were prominent in their marketing. How?

    timespace, (edited )

    I’m not sure where you’re from, but in the US a 75/100 is a C. B would be 80-89.

    fritata_fritato,

In nz or Australia a C was 50%.

    ShadowRam,

    50 > D
    60 > C
    70 > B
    80 > A
    90 > A+

    wccrawford,

Where I’m from, 94-100 was an A, so 74-83 was still a C, but it would just squeak by.

    Silverseren,

So Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 were kickass Bethesda games?

    thanevim,

They were certainly Bethesda games. I'm not even remotely fond of multiplayer fallout. But for 4, it's a marvelous modding world that I've sunk over a thousand hours into.

    Norgur,

And thanks to their cultish adherence to their engine, I could copy paste some mods between Skyrim and Fallout.

    Art3sian,
    @Art3sian@lemmy.world avatar

Bethesda made way more games than that. Are you new to gaming? You should check out their website.

    Silverseren,

But those are their most recent offerings. I care more about the quality of what they produce now and not their glory days decades ago.

    Art3sian,
    @Art3sian@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, so you ARE aware of their other games and you were just cherry picking the ones that weren’t as popular? Now with that brought to light, you’re changing the date parameters to suit your narrative?

    You’re very good at this.

    Silverseren,

All I "cherry picked" was their two most recent games that have actually been published in the past decade.

    hypelightfly,

Technically Skyrim has also been published in the past decade, and even more recently than Fallout 4. In fact it's been released 5 times since Fallout 4.

I've never played 76, but 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. I think most people who didn't like it were going into it desiring for it to be something it wasn't. What it was impeccably good at was being a scavenging looter shooter with addicting weapon and armor modification and a fun outpost building system that wasn't for me, but did let me make my own little home.

    CaptainEffort,

I just wanted a well written rpg. Guess that’s on me.

    all-knight-party,
    @all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

Definitely not Bethesda's strong suit and not what I go to their games for. Their NPC interaction is made up of tons of awkward TMI introductions and dialogue too quirky to take seriously most of the time. That's a valid criticism, I would not say Fallout 4 is well written. I think it has some interesting premises like the whole synth idea, but not a well executed story.

The only overall story I really thought was good in that game was Paladin Danse's quest chain.

    PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

Fallout 4 was a great game, but like Fallout 3, was a terrible Fallout game. Fallout 4 is what Fallout 3 should have been.

I will agree, Morrowind was an amazing game.

    abraxas, (edited )

My guilty pleasure is to install Morrowind again and commit to replaying it, but to instead do another Skyrim playthrough because I just have more fun for some reason.

There’s something about the newer Bethesda games. I’ll go and install legacy games from other companies all the time for the sense of nostalgia, but despite having beaten almost all of them going back to Arena, if I want a Bethesda game I always end up playing Skyrim or FO4. And now (I presume) Starfield

    hyperhopper,

It’s another subpar Bethesda game in a long line of subpar Bethesda games. Lifeless bland NPCs, tons of glitches, bad gameplay issues, and the same “shallow ocean” criticisms we’ve been going over since Skyrim.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

It’s clear to me that Bethesda thinks Skyrim was peak Elder Scrolls, when I think Morrowind was peak Elder Scrolls. Unfortunately, it seems too much to ask for a decent story and interesting side content.

So I just don’t buy Bethesda games anymore. I was disappointed in Skyrim, and Fallout 4 wasn’t really my thing. It also doesn’t help that I don’t like the leveling mechanics of RPGs either and tend to prefer ARPGs like Ys and Zelda where leveling isn’t a major part of the game loop. I know what Bethesda offers, and it’s just not what I’m looking for these days. I play RPGs for story and immersion, not for graphics, character builds, and mods, and Bethesda seems to be more interested in the latter than the former.

But that’s what I appreciate from Bethesda. They’re pretty consistent at delivering a certain experience, it just so happens that it’s not for me.

    PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

You want bland NPCs then you should play BG3.

    sturmblast,

Anything is better than No Man Sky, after a trillion updates they still haven’t fixed the one issue the game has. There is only a single planet but a million copies of it with different colors.

    Ataraxia,

And de-synch issues and lack of flight stick support (regardless of steam, who cares about that). Also repetitive missions.

    KidsTryThisAtHome,

From what I’ve seen that’s also starfield lol, the same desert planets copy/pasted with different colored smoke/sand

    hubobes, (edited )

Yes but planets like that are realistically quite common. The ones with special features and biomes however are few but quite well done. Really not comparable.

    schmidtster, (edited )

No, a 3ds to switch is a pretty apt comparison about a modern pc to a steam deck actually.

There is absolutely no reason why anyone would assume this should be optimized for a mobile device. You would be limiting its potential in PC, if they can’t provide the same experience across all devices, they aren’t going to. It’s a competitor shooter for one thing….

Where am I comparing apples to oranges…? I’m using different approaches to show that not everygame a company designs is going to be playable on all devices, it’s NEVER, been that way. So why would it suddenly change just for this one case…?

How is any of that relevant to a company being able to design games for what they want…?

In terms of computer power, a Steam Deck is basically a mid-range laptop. Go buy a Dell Inspiron for about the same price and how does It run CS2?

    Venutianxspring,

How is that the same? This is a PC game running on a device meant to run PC games. Apples to apples

    schmidtster,

    A severely limited device, like a 3ds compared to a switch even….

    Venutianxspring,

I’m glad you’re making it apparent that you don’t know what you’re talking about. Sure you can’t compare it to a two thousand dollar PC with top of the line hardware, but it’s plenty capable, affordable and you can take it anywhere. They’re fucking awesome and have made PC gaming accessible to lots of people

    schmidtster,

Yes it’s an awesome device and that’s not what was being discussed…

News flash, companies design games for different systems all the time, why should this one game be any different…?

    Venutianxspring,

You literally just said it’s a severely limited device, which it definitely isn’t. You’ve just done a complete 180 with your argument.

    schmidtster,

Compared to modern PCs… my argument hasn’t changed at all.

I think people expect a game made by Valve to run on gaming hardware made by Valve, even if it’s only for casual playing.

Yes. Why else did CSGO get controller and gyro support? While Valve did not promise anything in that regard, there was the expectation that CS2 would basically be fully optimized for Deck. Maybe it will still happen. The “final” release is nothing but an open beta.

    OrekiWoof,

To add to this, the expectation is because they basically killed off CSGO for CS2 as an upgrade, so it should have the same and more functionalities.

Yes you can still turn on CSGO from settings but it’s worthless without servers.

    tehmics,

Yeah we should be able to play half life Alyx on the steam deck too!!

    tdawg,

Sure but they haven’t cared about the state of their games in ages. Iike I’m all for pushing to get them to fix it and all, but think it’s weird that people are surprised. Especially when the vast majority of their focus has been on steam for the last forever

I play Destiny 2 on my Asus ROG Ally almost daily, and have played lots of PVE and Gambit, but hate Crucible. It’s really powerful, so I think it’s possible to play competitive games on a handheld if you’re comfortable with using a controller. Of course, you can plug it into a monitor and use the XG Mobile to get a decent graphics card. So yeah, I think a handheld can hold up to a gaming PC if you temper your expectations. You’re not going to be playing at 4k, 120 fps, but instead 720p 50-60 fps. Good enough for casual play all the time.

    lud,

I haven’t played destiny 2 in a long while but isn’t that game far from competitive?

It has competitive modes, but I don’t know how well it would do at tournament play. I’m not a big fan of PVP, but I’m pretty sure the Ally is powerful enough to play most of those games if you lower the graphics to get a nice FPS. I just cited Destiny because it’s what I’ve been playing lately.

Bethesda’s RPGs have always been shallow in the choice you have with dialogue and altering the story, but deep with the detail, world-building, and mechanics of gameplay. Arena is almost no different in the gameplay loop as Starfield. They went through various phases of how to use rules and complexity of certain systems, but have since settled in a formula established first by Morrowind and refined with Oblivion and further with Skyrim.

They are not about the story. The story is just kinda there to drive some motivation and give context to your own thing. They excel at immersing you in the world and allowing you to just play however you want without restrictions (such as being a god in everything without having to start over and build specific characters to do specific things). They have a pretty good track record of doing good environmental story telling and adding in all those little stories in notes and terminals that aren’t even tied to quests.

But when it comes to stories and dialogue? They had ONE game that was a masterpiece, Morrowind, and the rest have ranged from absolute shit to pretty good. And not one of them, not even Morrowind, actually have the same kind of choice and sweeping changes affected through dialogue get in a story-focused RPG like Baldur’s Gate. Bethesda will likely never have a game as well written as Morrowind again, because that isn’t what they are about.

They are very much about the action over the words. Despite the jank as fuck AI, the combat is still fun somehow (and imagine how much more fun it could be if the AI didn’t suck!), it’s incredibly easy to lose yourself in the world because of how detailed it is, and there are plenty of shenanigans to pull once you begin to dive in and see how everything works. Like, I can’t wait to completely fill one of the huge craters near my base with watermelons and then dive in.

    FMT99,

This is it. Forget all the tracked on nonsense. The base building, the character management, production chains all that nonsense…

If you focus on the combat/looter aspect of the game, that part is actually pretty good. A world apart from the janky combat of Fallout, it actually feels pretty visceral.

They may not explode like in Fallout, but there is a new fun spectacle in town: Shooting out backpacks on low gravity environments and launching your enemies off world.

And this is why I didn’t buy Starfield. I loved Morrowind and was disappointed with Skyrim, and I think it’s because I prefer a tighter, more linear story and don’t like “messing around” as much. I watched a gameplay video, and the things that player got excited about (all the side content) really didn’t grab my attention, and the story itself seemed a bit flat.

I probably would’ve loved it as a kid, but that’s not what I’m looking for these days.

So for me, BG3 is the better game. But younger me would’ve preferred Starfield. They’re both great games, just for very different audiences. And I could totally see someone having exactly the opposite opinion as me, which just shows how great both are.
