I think the execs were always somewhat shit, even when they were making good games. It’s just their creative team miraculously managed to make good games despite the shitty execs.
I haven’t played TF2 in a while (before f2p?), my understanding is that community servers were mostly fine and how we’re mostly on random casual games?
At least this game has a dedicated server option, contrary to the other TF2.
Bring dedicated servers back.
Can’t have persistent server capacity issues if I can throw my own hardware at it.
This also gets rid of match making, which is whatever. Just give me a server browser and I’ll find a few favorites and hang on those.
It can also keep working long after the companies give up on them too.
Okay let me start with two heavy hitters right from the get go and don’t forget these are only personal oppinions and I absolute understand if you like those games. Good for you!...
At least back in the day, multiplayer games released with the server you could self host.
Or you’d find a chill one that you liked and it became its own little community of sorts with regulars and whatnot.
Now, some games make it genuinely hard to even play multiple rounds back to back with the same people.
The ranking system and match making superceded the lobby.
There’s still a lot of enjoyable games, gems even, but there’s a lot of hot garbage too.
I don’t think it’s (just) Internet’s fault.
Hell, we’d play Diablo over dial-up and it was amazing at the time.
I think it’s more the corpo greed making its way everywhere. No mTx, no subscription, no battle pass, no unlocking bs, no cosmetics, no unending daily grinds, just you, the game, maybe a buddy if your family didn’t need the phone.
DRM didn’t exist, they’d ask you questions about the game manual instead.
I remember bringing the Fallout manual on a trip and reading through it thinking about what character I’d make. Now everything is digital only, you’re almost lucky if it comes with a wallpaper.
Despite being nominated for numerous awards and even winning Game of the Year in 2018, the creator of God of War, David Jaffe, is not a huge fan of the new direction the series has gone in. Jaffe himself hasn't worked on these new God of War games, but thinks that they're not staying true to the spirit of the character and the...
Which is something super common in Metroid too.
Hell he probably hasn’t figured out you can shoot up and just tries to jump to fire horizontally at enemies instead.
Yea, I was never that into trading.
I made a car that looked nice to me and I kept that with the stuff I already had unlocked.
Sometimes I’d unlock something new and try it out.
I never really got too involved in the cosmetics, but had some friends who played this like it was day trading or something.
I remember some new car decals being almost the opposite team color which I thought was a terrible design choice.
It’s been a while, but soon after Epic bought them out it started lagging and rubber banding like shit for me, which got old quick.
I must have had hundreds of crates when I stopped playing.
Greedy out of touch old fuck.
Then again, it’s s not like the board is much better.
He’s gonna be their golden fall guy now, but it’s shit all the way up.
I liked Van Helsing.
Nothing ground breaking but it was a decent hack and slash.
The $10 bundle sounds like a decent deal if it’s a similar quality to Van Helsing.
No way I’d pay the $100 non bundle price though.
First step after installing a new game: disable Chromatic aberration, lens flare, film grain, motion blur.
Also:
Set FOV to something more inline with my screen and position.
Shitty console ports have this locked in, usually to a very low value that might make sense when you play from the couch but too low when playing in another setup.
This is a sore subject, but I feel it necessary to add to the gaming layoff news: Telltale laid most of us off early September. Status of TWAU2, I can’t say (NDA)....
These days, I just rebind buttons in SteamInput.
Using a Steamdeck, I actually prefer that than to deal with whatever rebinding UI the game might have.
There’s some things like action layers that I don’t expect game makers to ever implement.
Denuvo is like having to call your helicopter mom every other minute to make sure you still have the right to play.
If the call fails, or she doesn’t pickup, or if you can’t call for any reason (maybe your in the woods and have no service) you’re instantly teleported into a dark room and all your toys are gone because everyone assumes you’re a criminal now.
Yikes that sounds annoying and yea they should definitely make it possible, this really shouldn’t be much of a challenge to code on their end.
I’ve only had to do this a handful of times because I moved the base stations or reinstalled. (Index)
Yea, but here, that 60 bucks also gets you the full macOS version of that game.
For sure, it is pretty steep by itself if you only game on mobile, but if you look at it as including a version for your handheld when you buy it for PC… it’s pretty much what Steam already does with the Steamdeck, which makes sense to me.
Now the price itself, yea, I find it a bit expensive, even on PC/Steam and I’ll probably wait to grab it on sale one day.
Dedicated servers ran by the community with a server browser to find games/servers.
Really the golden age of multiplayer.
Found a nice server that runs well, chill and well moderated? add it to your favorites.
No lobbies, well… technically the whole server was the lobby, kinda.
No progression unlocks bullshit.
No ranking. No waiting on matchmaking. Just play.
No AI spying on every thing you say or do.
Maybe a “SIR this is a Christian server, so swearing will not be tolerated” or other warning of some kind now and then, even on games like Counterstrike.
Eventually, you’d get to know people, kinda like how you might start recognizing names here on lemmy.
You’d make friends, rivals, etc.
I miss those times.
I got into Titanfall 2 pretty late (like last month) and waiting 10 minutes to even get into a lobby is just annoying.
As opposed to joining a server and playing non stop on there.
It’s even less costs to the publisher than to host and scale on their own because the community is running your servers.
But then they can’t pull the plug to force people on a new release.
They can’t spy on as much shit.
They can’t sell as much private data.
It’s probably easier to sell microtransactions this way too.
Yea, some games I can play for hours.
Others make me feel weird after a few minutes.
I can spend a ton of time in Alyx, or doing barrel rolls and corkscrews in Star Wars Squadrons.
I have a hard time finishing a level in After the Fall.
This comment is true for so many games nowadays it’s getting annoying.
I got WWZ recently for some reason and holy shit.
It had been a while since I had regret buying a game.
I agree with you, he’s kind of a blank slate.
I think that works for a video game though.
It’s also refreshingly NOT the chosen one or blood line thing that’s a bit overdone in Star Wars.
(Crossing my fingers he’s not secretly a long lost Skywalker, Palpatine or Kenobi relative)
Many stories introduce the protagonist in their prime, or when they’re at their most interesting, then eventually release an origin story.
The first game felt like an origin story for a dude I didn’t know. (Haven’t played the second game yet)
My guess (hope) is he’ll feel more interesting as he gets more exposure and character development as games come out and we kinda get to see him grow as we play.
Yea for sure, he could have been a blank slate without being as bland or generic. By that I absolutely don’t mean to imply the actor is any of these things, but that they played it safe in character design.
Expecially in a universe of endless aliens.
It’s not even a choice that has to be limited between our own human heritages.
Haha, I can’t even read their bullshit excuse because I blocked unity.com and unity3d.com. On the off chance that I play something made in unity, I wanted make sure they can’t collect stats.
The CEO is a shitlord and the board isn’t any better.
I feel for the people doing the actual work on unity, may they find better jobs somewhere that is not such a dumpster fire.

Non inverted, keyboard and mouse.
The only games I play inverted are flight games on a controller where I invert Y, only because I’m too cheap to buy a flight stick setup and whenever I go doyen that rabbit hole I start overthinking it and not buying anything.
Never happens to me, but is that like if a game you’d override outside the game and play inverted it’d be fine 90% of the time but then it doesn’t make any sense in some menus or maybe the map or whatever?
You have a few options.
On the deck, just use the joystick for one and the trackpad for the other.
Or use either mode shifting or action layers (I never remember which is which) so that behavior changes when you hold another button.
Think kinda like tab vs alt tab, but with like… anything on the controller. Want the joystick the behave differently when holding the left trigger or whatever?
Yea I know but it’s still a bit lame.
You can enable an option to add the first person player model to Ray tracing, but it doesn’t have a head (on purpose so it didn’t clip in the first person camera), so you have decapitated reflections.
Same reason the player shadows are janky, first person models are often like that. You gotta adjust it so it looks good in first person but then it’s all weird in third person.
There’s technically a third person model, but it’s probably not animated, so… yea maybe some day.
