Probably, but SEC is completely captured and underfunded.

They’re idiots for this policy. You alienate your devs, you ruin your platform.

Saledovil,

Most businesses get ruined if you alienate your customers. The exception would be monopolies.

From games as a service we went to game engine as a service. What is the next step? C++ as a service?

Don’t give them ideas.

C++ rebranding as €++ 🤑

maynarkh,

There absolutely were non free language compilers at some point. If we hadn’t had tjings like GCC, it’d be a different world.

Just look at Apple, they always asked money for XCode.

Glad they’re finally catching up to Xbox from a platform features standpoint. Things like this were why I used to be so pro-Xbox, but that gap is narrowing rapidly.

gk99, do games w Square Enix games misfire due to being "single producer's fiefdom", report suggests

Maybe they shouldn’t be doing everything possible to drive off consumers. Exclusivity deals everywhere, prices that don’t like to dip, multiple versions of the same game so you need to pay more for the complete thing later. I tried to get into FF with 15, and I actually really liked it. Then all this nonsense happened with FF7R and I just gave up because it seemed like a pain to try and follow the series.

Bloomberg reports that newly-appointed CEO Takashi Kiryu is aiming to improve the company's profitability by whittling down the number of smaller projects it releases, while focusing on big-budget games with a higher potential to improve profitability.

So you're disappointed with the sales of these enormous games that spend far too long in development and don't get the return you want, and your plan is to double down on these games instead of Dragon Quest Builders and Octopath? Here's an idea: take someone who's successfully led a smaller game and then give them progressively larger projects to lead. And maybe don't make a main entry in your marquis series exclusive to a single console in an age where the PC market will likely outsell it.

Isn't this insider trading? If I owned a company and sold all my stock and then tanked my company with stupid news, that'd be illegal.

Though I'm surprised they sold it before the news. This kind of fund-raising tactics piss off customers but investors usually love it, the short-sighted creatures they are.

Hegar,

It's obviously insider trader but laws are for the poors.

Ottomateeverything,

The guy who owns the company knows what it means for the long term stock price: a plummet. He knows that’ll come eventually if these changes go through.

Investors may react positively to the news, but when they see the damage it actually does, they’ll pull out too.

The guy running the company has shares that are valued way higher than when he earned them, he is sitting so high right now it’s far worth selling here instead of gambling on the response to the news. It’s just simple “quit while you’re ahead”.

Whirlybird,

No it’s not. If he unloaded a huge bunch out of nowhere just before the announcement then sure, it probably is, but that’s not what happened - he has been consistently selling stock the whole year, buying none.

What likely happens is he is paid partly, or was at some stage, in stock. To convert it to cash you need to sell it.

“Illegal” doesn’t mean much anymore if you’re rich. No one seems to be enforcing anything cuz we can’t get in the way of that trickle-down.

ayla, do gaming w All Picross e games to be re-released on Switch
@ayla@beehaw.org avatar

I’d kill for PC versions — they’re the only games that ever make me want to pick up my Switch instead of my Steam Deck.

Kajo,

Picross games are the Nintendo version of the pen-and-paper puzzles called nonograms. I’m pretty sure you can find this kind of puzzles on steam or websites.

ayla,
@ayla@beehaw.org avatar

Oh, definitely (and I even have a few of them), but I think Jupiter’s versions are a notch above most of them. They feel a bit more polished, IMO.

Jabbawacky,

Yep. I’ve played many similar nonogram games where I’ve realised there are multiple solutions - which means it’s not been properly planned or tested. Broken, basically.

I’ve never had that issue with picross, a series I’ve been playing since the GB original in the 90s.

Cqrd, (edited ) do games w Unity backtracks slightly on plans to charge developers for game installs

There’s no way they can stop install bombings. There’s gonna be something that they rely on that can be changed somehow, and even if they find a way to perfect it, how could any developer trust that it’s flawless?

This is bad even if everything did work and everything was flawless. They’ve wrecked their trust here.

BobKerman3999,

Unfortunately there’s only unreal engine as an alternative…

Cqrd,

That’s not necessarily true. Lots of alternatives exist and Godot seems to be what all the cool kids are using now

sugar_in_your_tea,

And the 3D demos are impressive. The recent version uses Vulkan and has lots of interesting new features.

I hope this increased interest results in better funding. It’s a great project, just limited by manpower.

hypelightfly, (edited )

Godot is also an alternative and it's free/open source so no worries about the company completely changing how they charge you in the future and destroying all the work you have done for years.

ninjan, do games w EA confirms The Sims 5 will be free-to-play and co-exist alongside The Sims 4

I really only want the house building. I had a blast in Sims 2-4 building my dream house and trying out floor plans, optimizing flow of everyday life and just the architecture/design aspects of making it look good. Sadly they always hit limitations which took the fun out of it due to not being able to build like you wanted. Especially roofs were tricky or impossible to get to look good. And slanted roofs wasn’t in any base game and I didn’t buy DLC (and haven’t played 4 in like 5 years+).

If someone could make an house architect game I’d so love it! Build a house for a family of 4 with a budget of X with these bullet point demands. Then get scored on stuff like usable sq footage, how well the bullet points got satisfied etc.

Blaze,
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I completely get it!

CluckN,

Paradox announced a Sims-like game with a focus on modability. I’m hoping they pull a Cites Skylines and add some competition to the genre.

ninjan,

Yeah I saw that but it looked to also have a lot of focus on the dolls and not the dollhouse, I’m more about the house.

DocBlaze,

what you’re searching for is a game called house flipper. it’s on steam, and after reading your post I am 100% confident you will love it and should look it up.

ninjan,

Cool game and thanks for the recommendation! But the first one is only focused on renovations and while it’s fun to reimagine a space I’m not at all interested in the nitty gritty of renovations. I have my own house and have done a fair bit of renovation work so doing it in a sim game would be dreadful, I’ve never understood the whole genre of “do menial labour but as a game!” Like Euro Truck Simulator and it’s ilk.

The coming second game however talks about building a house from scratch as well which does sound promising! If the build process isn’t too time consuming and smooth it might be great. So I’ll for sure check that out once it’s out!

zib, do games w Unity bosses sold stock days before development fees announcement, raising eyebrows
@zib@kbin.social avatar

As much as I can't stand John Riccitiello, anyone with RSUs will have vested stocks sold on a fixed schedule to cover taxes. They don't get to choose when or how much is sold as long as they have their RSUs configured as sell to cover. The executives are no different in this regard, except they have a great deal more stocks than the average employee. However, this doesn't absolve them of the awful new pricing structure. That shit should have been walked back before it ever left the planning stages.

Talaraine,
@Talaraine@kbin.social avatar

So nobody would ever time such an announcement after such a divestiture.

zib,
@zib@kbin.social avatar

Don't get me wrong, the timing was fucking abysmal. They really should have thought about that ahead of time, but these executives rarely think about anything other than how to line their own pockets.

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

So your saying they didn’t time the share sales with respect to the announcement- they timed the announcement with respect to the fixed share sales date.

zib,
@zib@kbin.social avatar

I'm saying they didn't think about it at all because it's easier to blame users for misunderstanding than take responsibility for anything themselves.

Whirlybird,

If you’re selling shares monthly it doesn’t matter when the announcement is, you’re going to have people questioning your sell anyway. They would not have thought about the timing in relation to automated share sells at all because it’s a non issue.

ShittyRedditWasBetter, do games w EA confirms The Sims 5 will be free-to-play and co-exist alongside The Sims 4

I love the rage over this. You’ve all clearly never met most of the people playing this game. They already spend hundreds on DLC, it’s the majority of the game.

Frankly this is a $70 discount for most fans.

BudgieMania,

Yeah, I know a Sims player and Sims 4 is literally the only game she plays. The way you or me would buy a new game, she buys a DLC. It's like it is its own gaming ecosystem for most of its players.

drekly,

But it’ll be worse now. It won’t be the same as 4, but free. It’ll be a glorified store with constant popups begging for money

It says a lot that it’s “running alongside” the previous game. You must not have a lot of faith in your game if you’re expecting your sequel to not replace the previous game.

ShittyRedditWasBetter,

Lolol you just described the past 10 years of the Sims. It has been, from day 1, a glorified store. And people love it.

drekly,

Yep. And now it’ll be much worse
