Meh. They might have not wanted to make Ep3, but the fans sure did.

I understand Valve works or used to work very differently, people collaborating without a strong top-down steering from management. Yet whatever explanation they have, we were punched in the gut at the end of Ep2, then left waiting, holding our breath. It’s just a piece of media, but it was an important part of my teenage years, and I could never experience the end of the story (outside of reading it in a blog) I waited so much for.

This made me really resent Valve, and soured my experience/memories with the series, I haven’t touched HL or other Valve game for 10+ years, and I don’t think I will in the future.

slaacaa, (edited )

I work as project manager, just spent the entire week fighting a client on a new project’s scope, because he wanted more things done by the team than what was agreed in the proposal.

Anytime I read about this game, I have to do breathing excercises in a corner to calm my anxiety.

slaacaa,

You’re just jelous of my 5k kimited edition spaceship (will be ready next year)

slaacaa,

Nobody wants more content, most big titles are already bloated

slaacaa,

Just want to show of ray tracing. In return, it runs 30 fps (while the original runs 60 on PS5), with worse music and camera.

Absolutely pointless cash grab, they should have just created a graphics upgrade to polish out some texture details, add haptic feedback, and sell it as an add on for 10.

slaacaa,

Mostly it’s the lack of competition.

On one hand, regulators allowed big companies to become monopolies, so we don’t have a choice. Imagine if instagram and whatsapp were not part of facebook, how different social media would be? Or if bumble and hinge were competing with tinder, not just all being a part of match.com.

And on the other hand, we have examples like the console “war”, where Xbox messed up this generation so hard, that Sony now can do whatever they want.

PS5 Homescreen Now Replaces Unique Video Game Art With Annoying Ads You Can’t Turn Off (www.ign.com) angielski

Wow, this is awful. Some people reported that these ads are also very petty and not necessarily related to the game, like apparently Elden Ring shows an ad for a licensed mousepad when you hover over the game now…...

slaacaa, (edited )

They are doing this because a rotten corpse doesn’t force them to compete, they can do whatever they want. If MS didn’t shit the bed with the Series X/S, Sony would be trying harder to please customers, or at least not actively screwing them (see also: 800 EUR PS5 Pro without disc drive or vertical stand).

slaacaa,

For Europe it’s 800 EUR + disc drive + vertical stand, almost 1k in total. No thanks, Sony 🤡

slaacaa,

C’mon, PS5 has great PS4 games, like Horizon, God of War, The Last of Us, …

Ubisoft’s free version of COD. I tried it as a friend was raving about it, tbh it’s a fine game if somebody likes this style. The character’s from the Ubi universe are just a gimmick, most play the same

slaacaa,

You are actually right. I tried this game as a friend liked it, and it basically does everything that COD does, but for free, so it’s not the worst way for somebody to spend their time online. Still, I imagine Ubi execs promised to dethrone every other shooter and have 100 million payers to milk for MTX.

They seem to be very caught off guard by Star Wars: Outlaws’ underperformance, and after investor pressure, are trying to massively course correct. This is what happens when you vote with your dollars!

slaacaa,

Seems like they watched the new Ghost of Yotei trailer

slaacaa,

Same, I couldn’t even finish watching a 10 min review, it was so boring. When I went to pick up Space Marines 2 in a big store, it was full of SW Outlaws discs. I picked up the last SM2, and Astro Bot was already sold out, so people were happy to buy games, just not this one.

slaacaa,

OMG, I was not expecting this. Amazing look and music, some new weapons from the looks of it, really looking forward to this

slaacaa, (edited )

I mean it is a diverse portfolio, but only on the very shallow surface level. Like COD or FIFA, AC games are the same every year / 2 years with a different skin.

I remember when it was actually different 10+ years ago, like when we got AC Unity, Black Flag close by, with some Far Cry 3 on the side. Their open worlds had similar elements, but it was still very different at the core.

Now it’s just repetitive and boring.

slaacaa,

Wow, this really gives me confidence that it’s going to a great game. Time to preorder for 70!

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford says his hopes on Epic Store were 'overly optimistic or misplaced' (www.tweaktown.com) angielski

I’m genuinely shocked how much Epic poured into the store and it still lacks so much basic features. Sorting games is still extremely barebones, store is filled with NFT/crypto garbage, the store still looks like a college student’s first front-end project, and last time I used the launcher to pick up free games (last year),...

slaacaa,

I also think that developers/publishers don’t care about the % cut that much, they would rather just sell a lot of games. Which comes back to your point, the value proposition of EGS isn’t appealing to the buyer.

It’s like I make a competition to Uber with better cuts and working conditions to drivers. That is nice, but if the consumer has to wait 25 mins for my taxi while the Uber is there immediately, than they will not pick me for the same price.

Day 10 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I’ve been playing until I forget to post Screenshots (lemmy.world) angielski

Today’s Game is Assassins Creed Black Flag. Honestly I’m kind of impressed I made it too 10 days. I totally expected myself to miss a day on my streak. Also. slaacaa,

Please keep going!

Black Flag is one of my all-time favorite gaming experiences. Crazy how long ago it was, covering my feet with a blanket during winter, humming pirate songs while sailing in the open sea.

slaacaa,

Great things from small beginnings. What a game.

In 2016 I was sitting at home recovering after they removed a wisdom tooth, and finished it during a long weekend.

slaacaa,

Yeah that was abslutely disgusting. Business conflicts happen, and sometimes you must make unpopular choices, but blatantly misleading people and publicly throwing somebody under the bus is not acceptable

slaacaa,

That looks like the 90s. Gulf War setting maybe?

Still, I will hold off for reviews, recent COD games have been absolute shit, and BO CW was very weak compared to the old BO games. I also had to refund MW on PS5 a few years ago, as it was literally always crashing my console, and they couldn’t fix it.

  1. Governments should only allow big mergers in exceptional circumstances
  2. Big conglomerates should be broken up

They are bad for the workers, and bad for the consumers. Half of the time, also bad for the shareholders (according to an old McK study). Lives are being ruined for billionaires to gamble for more billions.

slaacaa,

You say you don’t go on reddit out of principle. Now can’t you understand someone not wanting users sit through a 2 second pointless marketing animation, out of a similar principle?

slaacaa,

Things like these make might heart warm. They remind me of a time when video most games where about making a good experience for the users, not about endless MTX and soulless always online games that all try to be the same thing. Good to see that there are still some people in the industry, who carry own these principles.

slaacaa,

It will make the shareholders richer, as you can fire a few writers and animators to save costs, and still sell a the game with shittier dialogues.

slaacaa,

But they can, because it seems like most gamers have goldfish memory, and they forgot/forgave the shitty launch and first years

slaacaa, (edited )

Good demonstration of the current quality of journalism. “Cost X in revenue” doesn’t make any sense, as cost and revenue are the exact opposite things, the difference of which (if I simplify) make up the EBITDA that the quote from the company actually referenced for the 200 M USD negative impact.

I’m not expecting a game journalist be an ACCA certified accountant, but should be at least able to write an accurate title based on the available quotes and information.

slaacaa,

This is a very good point. It also shows the delusion of the executives, thinking that their next shitty looter shooter will become the new Fortnite, not understanding the oversaturation of the market. People have limited hours to play per day, the only way they can play your game is if they stop playing something else.

slaacaa, (edited )

The most depressing thing I’ve seen related to this topic. A small team that worked incredibly hard were lucky enough to achieve the impossible, and now they watch without any control as it is taken from them, for no other reason than greed.

Due to unchecked neoliberal capitalism, big companies like Sony already cover so much of the developed markets, that they have no way to naturally grow more. So they are forced to squeeze more out of what they already have, as stagnation is not accepted in this hellish system.

The line must go up, whatever the cost!

Edit: damn, Sony actually listened

slaacaa,

Holy F, what a smooth brain move. They had an IP with incredible goodwill that would have been printing money forever (think about DLCs and merchandise, maybe even a TV series), and they chose to destroy all that to increase the active PSN account numbers by <1%. Which doesn’t even have a direct financial benefit, just something they can peacock in their quarterly reports, trying to boost the stock price.

slaacaa, (edited )

I understand that sales funnel logic, but I would still argue its actual financial impact would be marginal. It’s wishful thinking from Sony that just because you got your claws into a PC player by making a PSN account, they will start buying PS stuff. The data monetization is much more direct, but still, not much additional money to be made by a few (tens of / hundred) thousand extra registrations (especially as they had to be aware of refunds happening). These are definitely valid upsides, but I don’t think they are big/certain enough to make this call, and compensate for the negative consequences.

My gut / experience tells me this is mostly about the PSN account numbers, and some execs getting a gazillion dollar bonus if they can push it above certain target by the next report, even if they damage the revenues in the process.

I just learned an interesting piece of gaming history that most people might not know about. (Xbox Live Arcade on original Xbox) angielski

I just learned that Xbox Live Arcade was a service that first started on the original Xbox, not Xbox 360. You had to order a disc online that would let you access the XBLA store. Here’s the wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live_Arcade...

slaacaa,

Nice find, I completely forgot. I remember either me or a friend having the XBLA disc, but I never even connected my original XB to the net, so I never used it, I just played offline.

Great console btw, funnily it was the one that turned me from PC to consoles, so I could play the newest Mortal Kombat with friends. I since switched mostly to Playstation, but always had some kind of XB from every gen.

It really hurts to see how MS dropped the ball with the console since, after doing the impossible and narrowly outselling Sony with the 360. I really though GamePass might turn the tide in their favor again, but as Sony now has a similar service, it seems to have not.

slaacaa,

And it is very bad for the consumers, as the console market highly needs the competition. It’s a shame how MS is dropping the ball with Xbox

slaacaa,

Hundreds of millions of Call of Duty and Fifa games sold show that unfortunately marketing works

slaacaa,

Investors don’t care about that anymore. Line must go up more and right now. If not, they will replace you with someone who promises to do that.

The best ways to raise stock prices include downsizing, jacking up prices, and cutting product quality to save cost. None of these are even remotely beneficial to the customers.

slaacaa,

Is it actually known that the slap had a negative effect on his career? I don’t follow these things, but most of the reactions I’ve seen were on the neutral/comedic side
