Mudface, w $70 Mortal Kombat 1 Switch version called "robbery" as graphical comparisons flood the internet

If you’re buying this (or anything other than Nintendo exclusive games) for your switch, it’s because you don’t have any other options and likely only own a switch

If you had a PC or a PS5, you’d buy it on that.

So switch only owners would pay whatever for it, but the rest of us wouldnt

bitsplease,

I mean, not necessarily - they might be buying it on the switch because they want a “mobile” version and don’t own a steam deck.

But yeah, ultimately if you own a switch, you should know what to expect by now from anything that isn’t a first party Nintendo title (and even then it can be a bit hit or miss from a performance standpoint)

InEnduringGrowStrong,
@InEnduringGrowStrong@sh.itjust.works avatar

I admit I haven’t really touched my switch much since I got a Steam Deck.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Sounds like they should accept their inferior switch version, or invest in better hardware.

bitsplease,

Given that the switch version looks terrible even by Switch standard, I think they’re right to complain and refuse to buy it. And not everyone can just “invest in better hardware” the second an upgrade comes along. Let’s not forget that up until the Steam Deck, the switch was the gold standard for handheld gaming - mainly by virtue of being the only real option

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Not always true; some games work really well on handheld/portable devices and the Switch is really good for that. The Binding of Isaac springs to mind.

Astroturfed,

I own a ton of games on my switch that aren’t switch exclusives. I travel a lot and use it like a Gameboy on planes, in hotels etc. Anyone using a switch entirely as a home console experience, ya silly to not buy games on PC etc instead.

Achievement % stats are so comically skewed by various factors that they mean basically nothing. There’s an achievement in Minecraft for literally just opening your inventory for the first time but only 60% of Xbox players have it.

There’s an achievement in Minecraft for literally just opening your inventory for the first time but only 60% of Xbox players have it.

12,7% of Amid Evil players are in-game forever:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/07bc0ef6-1815-48b9-9bac-3c880cae6034.png

Wogi,

That achievement is likely to gather more accurate statistics due to the problems you mention. The Amid Evil devs can now confidently say that 12.7% of players who own the game have never started it. Meaning they can subtract that number from other achievement percentages to get a better idea of how many people are progressing certain ways.

The same is likely true for Minecraft’s inventory achievement, though that’s slightly less useful, as some players may make it a little further without opening the inventory and then stop forever.

Leaving the first planet in Stafield takes a little more effort, but not much. It’s safe to say that some of the 25% of players who haven’t done it haven’t ever opened the game. But that number will probably be close to 10%.

steal_your_face,
@steal_your_face@lemmy.ml avatar

I think the percentages are calculated from players that actually launched the game, not from people who own it.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Steam does not count games that have never been launched. For 12.7% of the players the game probably quit under a bit different circumstances: game crashed or they lost internet connectivity.

Cethin,

Or they killed the application, or potentially alt-f4d depending on how well the game handles that.

Anticorp, w A quarter of Starfield players couldn’t even be bothered to finish the first mission

Starfield has been out for long enough now that anyone interested in playing it likely already has.

Not even close, especially not in the year that also brought us Baldur’s Gate and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. How much free time does this writer think everyone has?

explodicle,

It’s a Bethesda game. In a year most of the bugs will be fixed by the Unofficial Starfield Special Edition Patch, and it’ll be on sale.

Cethin,

They were actually fairly accurate that it’s their least buggy title yet. That’s not to say there are none, but they are few and far between. The game just isn’t that fun for now. Animations take too long (currently already mods to fix most of them), traveling is boring, outposts suck, and just so much QoL changes are needed. Bug fixing isn’t really required from my experience. Plenty of other fixes are though.

Feathercrown,

As much as they do, probably

Aganim, (edited )

Yup, definitely interested in Starfield. But at the moment still enjoying Act I of BG3, Cyberpunk 2077 patch 2.0 and DLC are right around the corner and after I’ve finished those Cityies: Skylines 2 will be available. So I’ll probably have time for Starfield somewhere early 2024, depending on if my recurring Satisfactory itch hits before that. But by that time more official and unofficial bugfixes and QoL mods will be available, so I’m fine with waiting a bit longer to play. This year is just filled with too many goodies. 😁

Cethin,

I’ve played Starfield (did not purchase it on Steam…) and it’s alright. I haven’t finished it, and I won’t be for a while. It’s is missing so much QoL and so many thing will need the mod toolkit for modders to fix, which isn’t available yet. It should not be purchased by anyone at the moment. You’ll have a better time in several months, and it’ll quite possibly be cheaper.

There’s so much else to play. I’m wanting to get around to Armored Core 6 sometime, but Payday 3 is coming out, and Cities Skylines 2 and Counter Strike 2 (both CS2, and cities dropped it’s ‘:’ to add to the confusion) are coming soon. I may hop back into Cyberpunk if I get around to it, but it’s on the lower end of the list. There’s literally no reason for anyone to bother purchasing Starfield for a bit.

TheDarkKnight,

Yeah this one is most definitely back burnered cause it didn’t launch with DLSS and Bethesda always has a million bugs. I’ll wait for the mods to fix everything and play the polished games first.

ZOSTED,

I haven’t even got around to Sea of Stars, for pity’s sake

hitmyspot,

Why buy then? Wait for a sale and buy then.

ChiefSinner, w A quarter of Starfield players couldn’t even be bothered to finish the first mission

People do play games offline. Personally, I don’t care about achievements. They mean nothing to me, except knowing that the game developer is tracking my play through, which I hate.

Cethin,

People play offline and they also mod games (especially Bethesda games and especially this one). In order to get achievements in Starfield you either need to play (mostly) vanilla or install an extra mod to re-enable them. This is a dumb article and should be downvoted. There are many reasons why the claim is likely wrong.

DeriHunter, w $70 Mortal Kombat 1 Switch version called "robbery" as graphical comparisons flood the internet

To all people who buy switch and say it’s not about the graphics, it’s about the experience, this is what you get.

I’m not criticizing them saying this , I’m just making a point that switch as inferior hardware and you can’t expect to have the game with the same graphics as ps5. The game price is not tied to the graphics, it’s tired to the amount of work they had to put in it, which I’m sure is a lot

mindbleach, w Nexus Mods Fine With Bigots Leaving Over Removed Starfield ‘Pronoun’ Mod

Everyone showing up late to go ‘well I don’t see why they removed it!’ –

You are why.

Trolls escalate. They keep pushing until they get smacked down, then cry and scream and pretend they’ve been proven right. Being ignored doesn’t just embolden them, it bores them, and tells them they need to get worse to get attention. No matter what happens - no matter what anyone says to them - they get to use it in their stupid little word game.

The nature of bad faith is that there is no right answer.

You have to simply get rid of it, and the sooner, the better.

librechad,

I understand your point that the behavior surrounding certain mods can escalate and create a toxic environment. In that sense, it’s not just the mod in question but the kind of interactions it may foster. However, that leads us into a very slippery slope. If we start removing mods based on what they might encourage rather than what they actually do, where do we draw the line?

Note that mods can be used for multiple reasons, not all of which are nefarious. Some people may genuinely appreciate the option to customize their experience in a way that the mod allows, without any intention of engaging in toxic behavior.

Your argument seems to be based on the idea of acting pre-emptively to negate potential harm, which is a valid point. But this can also set a concerning precedent that may affect the open nature of modding communities, by limiting what can and cannot be customized.

So the question then becomes, how do we balance preventing potential harm with preserving the user’s freedom to customize their experience? It’s a complicated issue, but one that deserves open dialogue rather than summary judgment.

mindbleach,

However, that leads us into a very slippery slope.

Wrong.

Nath, (edited ) w Nexus Mods Fine With Bigots Leaving Over Removed Starfield ‘Pronoun’ Mod
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

To confused people exploring from all Communities trying to understand what the hell is going on:

  • Bethesda is a game studio who does a decent job of giving people choice to do/be whatever they want in their games. Out of the box they included the option to choose your pronouns in a new game called “Starfield”.
  • They also make it possible to modify their games to make very drastic changes to the player experience.
  • Nexus is a site that hosts thousands of mods to all sorts of games. People make mods, upload them to Nexus and players download them.
  • Someone made a mod to remove the option to choose pronouns from Starfield.
  • Nexus decided they don’t want to host this mod. It’s hurtful to people and goes against their values of inclusivity.

That’s about it. Most of the people whinging about censorship don’t even play the game. They’re just here to whinge about how the world is moving on from old bigoted ways and they want to stay in the past and be jerks to people for merely existing. If they actually cared, they’d just download the mod from some other site. The mod itself is probably not much bigger than this reply.

Chailles,
@Chailles@lemmy.world avatar

Most of the people whinging about censorship

To further add on that, to complain about censorship for a mod that LITERALLY censors the game.

ninchuka,

I didnt even think about that lmao

mindbleach,

In undue fairness, a mod to downgrade nudity or vulgarity would kinda make sense, if someone personally didn’t want to see that. (Or if they were concerned about it for streaming. Or they had kids in the room.) For example, there’s some racial slur graffiti in Bioshock Infinite that is used for highly effective shock value and characterization, and I could see someone wanting to tone it down.

The root issue is what’s being removed: the abstract possibility of characters being called “him” or “her” independent of their appearance. To people who won’t use the feature, it is literally nothing. It simply does not exist beyond a checkbox they’ll scroll clean past. The game part of the game will work exactly as they expect, from start to finish.

They’re whining about censorship because the real purpose of this mod is to signal that they’re against anyone else having that option.

They are performatively upset by this trivial separation of character model and branch condition. Because they hate trans people. There is no other possible motivation, because this pointless change is simple and direct.

This removal is a website telling those bigoted trolls: poop in someone else’s yard.

drislands,

I’ll add that my understanding is that you aren’t even prompted to choose a pronoun in-game – it defaults to one or the other based on your character creation choices, and you can then change it if you want to. It’s literally a non-issue.

Schadrach,

But, but… “PRONOUNS! GENDER AMBIGUITY! ARGLE BARGLE CRAZYRANT!!1!one!”

    “Sold out” doesn’t mean anything. For the last four generations, Sony has deliberately underproduced consoles at launch, specifically to claim ‘It’s flying off shelves! We can’t keep it stocked!’ This free publicity stunt even worked for the PS3… which struggled for years.

    That said, yeah, apparently the Xbox whatever-it’s-called sells about half as many units per year, compared to either the PS5 or Switch. Rough.
