all-knight-party, w AMD claims there’s nothing stopping Starfield from adding Nvidia DLSS
@all-knight-party@kbin.cafe avatar

Seems sort of weird. They say "when we make a deal we expect prioritization of AMD features" but that they don't explicitly say you can't add DLSS. I think that's too much grey area to say for sure, especially when the one saying it is on one side.

geosoco,

There was a recent game announcement that was Amd sponsored that has both (I think it was the avatar game?). I think it's very likely many of the games are time or budget constrained, and so when they're given money from AMD they implement that first and if they've got time or previous code add DLSS.

This feels like the old console money that Sony & Microsoft would give where developers focused some extra optimization or early engine design around one platform because of extra funding. If I recall, Sony gave a bunch of money to xplatform games.

Russianranger, w Bandai Namco: Elden Ring success will "truly widen" Armored Core 6's audience

I’m inclined to agree. Many folks saw Elden Ring and its hype/critical acclaim, and they’ll look to AC6 next. Of course, I’m already seeing folks that are playing it and saying its not for them via Steam Reviews. So double edged sword I guess. It’ll bring new players in, but some may have bought solely on the hype, expecting something like Elden Ring but sci fi. Personally, I just like Armored Core and mechs.

benignintervention,

I had zero expectations going into AC6, having never played one before and only discovering FromSoft in the past 3 years, but I love this game. I feel like I’m 13 years old playing PS2 Gundam games again

DreamySweet,
@DreamySweet@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

If you’re enjoying it, I would recommend checking out the rest of the series too. They all emulate well enough, except the PS2 games but they have PSP ports that emulate almost perfectly. The PS3 games might still be purchasable.

Varyag,
@Varyag@lemm.ee avatar

Honestly the PS1 and PS2 games emulate pretty well on Duckstation and the Nightly builds of PCSX2 (except for AC2, that needs the Stable)
You’ll just need to get used to the clunky tank controls.

Unicode13051,
@Unicode13051@lemmyf.uk avatar

You can customize them through the emulator (or Steam) to make the controls a bit more modern. I found a community layout for AC2 when I played in on my Steam Deck that made it feel much more like how AC6 plays.

Varyag,
@Varyag@lemm.ee avatar

Oh I played AC2 emulated a while back, but just needed to remap the turning buttons to the shoulders and I was good with the oldgen layout. At least until Silent Line when I needed to dual wield. But hey, I defeated all versions of old Nineball with those, so I’m happy!

Pxtl,
@Pxtl@lemmy.ca avatar

Honestly while the aiming and moving controls in the old game were bonkers, imho the jumping and firing controls were better. Only 4 buttons – fire, switch weapon, sword, and jump (which is lateral boost if you do it while walking) fit the game into a standard PS1 pad. Playing ac6 I’m annoyed how much my right thumb has to jump back and forth between the aim stick and the face buttons – if they didn’t have 4 attack actions and 3 boost actions they could’ve fit more on the shoulders and l3/r3 actions.

Varyag,
@Varyag@lemm.ee avatar

I didn’t say it in this thread, but since you mentioned it I’ll concur: yeah after a tiny bit of remapping the shoulder buttons and d-pad, I actually got really into the old controls, and other than dual wielding, I actually preferred them over the later 3rd gen style. But both were usable. yeah I’m playing AC6 right now and I’m twisting my right hand into a knot operating the stick and the face buttons at the same time, but this is a kind of problem that every japanese mech game has… Gundam Battle Operation 2, EDF, the 4th and 5th gen of AC too. At this point I’m just used to it.

Pxtl, (edited )
@Pxtl@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m playing on PC and switched to KB+M in my 2nd session and it’s night and day. Unless you’re using a PS5 controller with the extra buttons on the back, this game is meant for keyboard and mouse.

My kid thought I was nuts: “it’s a fromsoft game! They don’t even know keyboards exist!” but they provided basic keyboard/mouse support and it works amazingly.

Edit: I feel like dual-wielding takes away a lot from AC. The swordplay is too essential to the game, imho. My dream AC game would play more with melee weapons in the left-hand slot but remove dual-wielding. However, otherwise I prefer weapons in AC6 - more oomph and longer cooldowns means there’s more fun cycling through your gear instead of switching to a weapon and emptying it like was often the strategy on AC1, and the AC1 “heavy shoulder guns mean going immobile” and the stunlocking were dumb ideas.

But I assume I’m weird since I skipped all the middle games in the series and jumped from ac2 (which I barely played) straight to ac6 and was mostly an AC1 die-hard. I’m sure I missed a lot of good reasons why dual-wielding is good.

I also played Daemon x Machina and it was boring as hell, and duallies was a big reason.

Varyag,
@Varyag@lemm.ee avatar

I’m not switching to KB+M but I am switching to Type B controls after struggling against Balteus for 6 hours today. My hands actually hurt from how hard I was gripping the controller, lol.

Dual wielding was basically the only way to play in late Gen 3 as the games got harder and harder, and the enemy ACs started coming more and more decked out (or in the case of Last Raven, straight up cheating) and is what I’m most used to. First thing I did in 6 was to put on dual rifles. But now after trying out other builds I put a sword back on, they’re really fun and VERY strong in this game.

    My last CoD game was MW2 back in 2009. Man did I play that a-LOT. I know afterwards Black Ops was a big success but is it still as popular or atleast as good? I keep seeing these CoD releases and lost track of all the new titles and remasters

    Fester,

    I haven’t played every COD by any means, but my understanding is that you stopped on a good note. Every recent COD I’ve tried feels like an absolute mess - mostly because of the aggressive cash shops that bog down the menus, and immersion-breaking skins/tracers etc. which I personally don’t enjoy seeing at all, like a gorilla and the clown from Saw. There are always bugs and crashes that literally never get fixed. Regardless of all that, they generally feel soulless and sloppy. There aren’t many FPS offerings these days, and Activision clearly knows they don’t need to be competitive. They just push a new one out the door every year, knowing fans love to hate the games and buy them religiously.

    I did enjoy MW 2019 for a while, but MW2 did not hit the spot. Vanguard was extremely disappointing. Before those, my last COD was BO2. I’ve been on the fence lately about buying BO3 (2015) for a good zombies experience every time I see it on sale. But I know I would be playing solo because of the veteran stage those zombies players are in, and I have a feeling I’d get screeched at if I don’t know every meta strategy, so I end up passing on it every time.

    Personally I’d say skip the Sledgehammer games and be skeptical and cautious about IW games, but give Treyarch’s next BO game a try if it doesn’t turn out to be an obvious bomb.

    They’re almost all wildly successful and popular though, so there must be many fans who disagree - YMMV.

    Dettweiler42,

    MW2 (the current release) is a broken, buggy, unfinished mess that has only gotten progressively worse with each update. They did eventually add some very basic features that people had to beg for several months after release. The game is drowning in hackers and toxicity with no end in sight; and runs about as stable as someone taking anti-depressants and anti-psychotics at the same time. It honestly feels like they’re rushing to get to their next game as quickly as possible so they can leave this trash heap in the past, while continuing to bleed their current user base dry of as much cash as possible. Their fans are likely hoping that maybe THIS time, Infinity Ward finally learn from the mistakes of the past (but they absolutely won’t).

    From a basic cash value standpoint, MW2 has been a ripoff. The game started at $70, and immediately they bombard you with in-game ads to buy a $30 pass that’s only good for 60 days. Half of the multiplayer content is locked behind this paywall. Each new release of content is $20-30, and they release more DLC packs on roughly a monthly basis while ignoring the core issues ruining the game. With each new update, the style of the game gets closer and closer to looking like Fortnite. If you refuse to buy any of that stuff, you end up with 1/10 of a game that will be decommissioned soon. If you were to go maximum whale mode and buy everything they’re pushing to have everything unlocked, you’re probably looking at close to $1000.

    If you’re missing old CoD/Battlefield vibes, just go buy Battlebit Remastered for $15 and have the time of your life. It’s been a couple of months since release, and it’s still near the top of the Steam charts.

    Meowoem, w Baldur's Gate 3 review - a critical success, with critical failures

    Loving the game, do agree though that it starts to get a bit muddled and confusing - at times it feels like I’m not really sure which quests I’m doing, why I’m doing it or what I’m trying to achieve – very realistic to real life in that regard but it can feel a bit of a chore

    tburkhol,

    I kind of stopped paying attention to side quests. In a lot of RPGs, I feel like they’re discrete, separate errands, and usually contained within the area where they’re given. BG3 side quests seem a lot more integrated, in the sense that I’ll often just happen along the next step in one as I pursue main quest. If not, then it may be because the next step is in the next Act. And some of them seem to be mutually exclusive.

    Maybe because it’s my first play through, but I’m now in ‘if it happens, it happens’ mode, and I’m confident that there are enough opportunities for me to make different choices to have a substantially different experience next time.

    That’s strike one!

    conciselyverbose,

    I don't see what's objectionable here. This isn't them saying they're going to start scanning every private chat you have to look for anything mildly controversial to take action against. This is saying that when you use their public-facing service and get reported for being an obnoxious douche to other users who are matched with you when trying to play their games, they have a standardized process so you know where you stand.

    nanoUFO,
    @nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Because you argue with someone on xbox live and they report you and you now have a strike, it’s been proven they will strike you over the smallest shit imaginable. Not having social features in X games is shit but okay but no multiplayer?

    conciselyverbose,

    They have it recorded. If they're repeatedly upholding reports through appeals, you probably deserve to be reported.

    And yes, you absolutely should lose access to multiplayer period if they're forced to ban you. The idea that just losing chat access is a suitable punishment for repeatedly being a shitbag is fucking absurd.

    nanoUFO,
    @nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I don’t play on xbox because I don’t support trillion dollar companies who’s founders were friendly with epstein. But I have friends who do and I’ve seen threads on reddit about the subject. I doubt they are trying very hard with the appeal system. Imagine a game banning you for being toxic and then steam banning you from all multiplayer games. Boggles the mind.

    conciselyverbose,

    Imagine a game banning you for being toxic and then steam banning you from all multiplayer games. Boggles the mind.

    If Valve had the staff and Valve was the one handling bans from games, that's exactly how it should work.

    People who aren't consistently making the experience of everyone around them worse don't routinely get banned, and a proper appeals system is more than enough. Being online doesn't mean that there aren't real people on the other end that you're harassing and treating like shit and ruining their gaming experience. "If you make an alt and go online, you lose offline access too" wouldn't be an overreach. It would just be good policy. You don't have a right to harass people with impunity.

    nanoUFO,
    @nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

    You can get banned from forums or the game itself by the gamedevs and you can get banned for breaking no rules I don’t see any advantage to such a system. People would literally get baited into arguments in games and end up getting banned because they argued with someones throwaway account or banned by a non involved third party just because they through the argument was toxic even if it wasn’t and wasn’t even directed at them. This is infinitely worse than community servers now you have another layer of useless abstraction with dubious quality removing access to all your games. If only people who harass people with impunity didn’t already get banned in games and were the only people banned in games.

    conciselyverbose, (edited )

    You're conflating two things. This isn't developers. It's Microsoft.

    If Valve was in charge of bans, a literal lifetime ban for you as a human being would be entirely justifiable and fair as a punishment for inappropriate conduct in interactions with other players.

    NewNewAccount,

    You get in a lot of arguments on XBL?
