SadSadSatellite, w Humble Choice August 2023 Review: A Stellar Month

Some good stuff on there. I’m still playing outer worlds from last month.

stephen01king,

I’m still playing Temtem.

FracturedEel,

I went to claim it and it said they ran put of keys. Never seen that before. I have the normal version but not the spacers choice edition

Cheese, w OpenMW (Open Morrowind) 0.48.0 Released!

Anyone here still play the game? Is it still worth playing, compared to newer games?

Computerchairgeneral,

I'd say so, but then again Morrowind has a lot of quirks that make it hard to get into for modern players. Like the fact that the game doesn't have quest markers. Instead, you get directions like "follow the road and turn left at the fork, it'll be the first cave you see" and you have to follow those directions if you want to find anything. Or how the game uses a dice roll-like system to decide if you hit with your weapon or succeed at casting a spell. At the same time, there is a lot to like about Morrowind if you give it a chance. Unlike a lot of modern RPGs, you don't start out as anyone special. You're a nobody and you stay as a nobody for a good chunk of the game. To advance in the various guilds you have to actually level up your various skills and do enough quests to earn a promotion. So when you do reach the rank of guild master or complete the main quest and people call you a hero it feels like you've really accomplished something.

So yeah. Definitely worth playing, but it's not for everybody and you have to remember that it's an RPG from the early 2000s. If you play it with OpenMW there's a great site called Modding OpenMW that catalogs mods that are compatible with OpenMW.

verysoft,

I wish RPGs would be more RPG again, immerse us in the world with things like directions rather than a UI for everything. Make players figure things out instead of being so hand-holdy.

MomoTimeToDie, w Gaming handhelds, like the Switch and Steam Deck, will need to have a replaceable battery by 2027 in EU | overkill.wtf

I wish the EU would just stop getting their grubby hands ibto everything they possibly can

Gotta love the reddit-tier “downvote anyone who disagrees” mindset here. It’s like I never even left reddit!

Iteria, w Call of Duty is using clones of real players to mess with cheaters | Engadget
@Iteria@sh.itjust.works avatar

They really decided that Naruto was right and kage bushin no jutsu is a fantastic defense against rapid attacks lol. That’s really fascinating. From the POV of a normal character cheaters are like storm troopers missing their shots over and over again and opening themselves to be sniped. From the POV of the cheaters their opponents are really dumb grouping together like that. I wonder when cheaters will get savvy to this technique and just move house when they see too many targets in a space.

ratboy, w TIL about the Sega Channel
@ratboy@lemmy.ml avatar

Dude I had sega channel, it was so cool! I believe you could play games all the way through and they grouped them by different genres, and the games changed monthly. They also had contests where you could win prizes. I won a backpack for one! Wish I still had it

That is rad as hell.

Milan, w CD Projekt: "We need to fix the relationship with our players" | GamesIndustry.biz

“I actually believe Cyberpunk on launch was way better than it was received, and even the first reviews were positive,” he concludes. "Then it became a cool thing not to like it.

How are you planning to fix your image when you’re still saying shit like this?

Swarming,
@Swarming@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don’t think he’s completely wrong. A lot of people felt similarly. I know SkillUp felt similarly that if you had a really good PC and could overlook the (unforgiveable, admittedly) bugs, it had a lot going for it.

tubabandit,

I knew almost nothing about the game and went into it completely without assumptions or preconceptions. I played it immediately at launch on XBone and didn’t stop for a few hundred hours of total game time. I was completely blown away.

Did it crash here and there? Was it lurchy and buggy? Did bikes sometimes get stuck in the pavement like it was sand? Did you wind up smashing an unconscious person’s head through the earth a la “Rock Bottom” every 4 or 5 times you tried to be sneaky? Yeah.

Despite that, was it one of the greatest games I’ve ever played? Fuck yeah.

People had genuine problems and a game should never launch in the state that CP77 was in, but I completely agree with him that it became cool to rip on the game.

pixxel,

Same for me, basically played it for 100 hours straight with as little sleep as possible… yeah it was buggy and the story was rushed in some places, but the overall experience was great for me.

jballs, w Gloomhaven Console | Pre-order trailer
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

Gloomhaven is amazing on tabletop and on the PC. I feel like the PC version added a lot of great visuals to the game and made it feel more immersive, while also sticking to the original rules and game play. I’m not a console gamer, but if you are, I highly recommend it. Can be played solo or with friends.

clay_pidgin,

I’ve only played the Jaws of the Lion version on tabletop but it’s SO GOOD.

jballs,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

Jaws of the Lion is definitely easier to get into. The organization is all done for you. Opening the Gloomhaven box is a vastly different experience. It’s like opening a box of Legos and wondering how the hell everything is going to go together. Literally had to go to a sporting goods store and buy fishing tackle boxes to organize everything!
