verysoft,

Oh man I can see me putting some hours into this on Steam Deck!

verysoft,

Just another lesson to wait months after a games release before even considering it.

verysoft, (edited )

There's no such thing. It's just milking people who are crazy enough to fall into the trap of buying them.
$30 is not a microtransaction, thats a macrotransaction, thats an entire other video game.

Free to play doesnt give a game a pass on predatory business tactics, they are free to play for one reason only... to sell you worthless pixels for ridiculous prices. F2P games are designed for that purpose and that purpose only.

But I agree that any paid game should have zero MTX, cosmetic or not. Industry is killing its creative aspect with all this monetisation shit.

verysoft,

Game is boring. Ubisoft somehow eclipsing EA at shitting the bed in every aspect.

verysoft, (edited )

This was a mistake in their wording, the next Subnautica will be like the others, they simple meant it will receive updates for a time after, just like the other ones did. There won't be any battle pass or mtx bullshit.

verysoft, (edited )

It's not becoming GaaS, they just meant it will receive updates like the current ones did, was a mistake in wording.

I hope it's more like Subnautica and not Below Zero too, having a silent protagonist explore a world and uncover story was far more fun than full voice acted characters. Not the mention how broken the BZ story was and how the world never made you feel uneasy like the original did.

verysoft,

https://unknownworlds.com/subnautica/an-update-about-the-next-subnautica/ :)

I thought the soundtrack was good on it's own (I love Ben Prunty's music), but it did not fit the game.
The way the music and audio design in-general in the first game all fit together so well is what made half the experience.

And yeah...
::: spoiler spoiler
you go down to find out what happens to your sister, then that becomes a side quest you can forget about and you fuck off with a random alien :')

They haven't fucked us over so far with DLC, MTX or any bullshit with their previous entries, so no reason to believe they will do here, they are very open with their development and talking to the community. So until they actually screw us over, it's unfair to pretend we are being.

It just sounds like a miscommunication/misuse of the term by KRAFTON, Unknown Worlds then came out to clarify. We will just have to wait and see, we can get actually angry once we know there's going to be some bullshit involved.

The only current downside to the next Subnautica is that it's going to be built on UE5, I just hope they manage to avoid all the shortcuts.

verysoft,

A lot of UE games are low performance or use shit features (like TAA). You can make something which "looks good" quickly with the engine and a lot of devs do just that instead of taking their time to tweak things for better performance or visual fidelity. So instead we get stuck with blurry messes.

verysoft,

I know right? He was suddenly hyped up so much, I guess it's one way to sell games. I'd understand if it was Miyamoto or something, but the man made Metal Gear and not everyone has even heard of that.
He was heavily pushed with geoff keighley's the game awards partnership he made.

verysoft,

He takes no more 'experimental swings' than hundreds of indie developers. The only difference is, his studio has the money for the marketing campaigns.

verysoft,

Aha, yeah I realise my mistake now. I was tired so I will let myself off.

verysoft,

He was though, some people might have known his name from Metal Gear, but majority of people didnt. Then TGA and Death Stranding rolled around and suddenly we were told we should care.

verysoft,

People keep reading their tweets and clicking on the articles.

verysoft,

Hades would be considered Roguelite, doesnt mean its a bad game, its great.

verysoft, (edited )

It's fine if a game is categorised more specifically, the problem is people getting upset that something is a Roguelite and not a Roguelike.
It doesn't matter, no genre is better than the other, your game isn't by default worse because it's a Roguelite and isn't by default better because it's a Roguelike, it's just a genre definition to help people find similar games.

I get that some might think they are too similar, but in that case we should just keep Roguelike and then define Roguelite games in a different way. At the moment a problem is games that have the 'run' gameplay, but nothing else like Rogue and then call themselves Roguelikes, but that's like having a bonfire checkpoint system in a visual novel and calling it Soulslike.

verysoft,

Mmm yeah, The Berlin Interpretation is way too specific, things like the graphics/grid etc. If some game fits more than half the factors, perhaps that should be considered 'like' enough? But I do understand why people can get anal about some games being categorised as Roguelike when they are infact not very similar at all.

I think it boils down to genre being misused in general, there's games with large open spaces called Open World, when they are not really, games that are called MMO when they are not. RPG games that are not actually RPG etc etc etc. Rogue fans just made a bigger deal out of it.

  • verysoft,

That game is an asset flip for sure. Just another AI scam game, of which we will see thousands and thousands of in the coming years. Developers history is just red flags all over.

    verysoft,

I have, it's dry. It's a 'as wide as an ocean, as deep as a puddle' kind of game.
The devs couldn't even finish their previous game, it's sketchy.

    verysoft, (edited )

Would be missing out on too much revenue, they all come back to Steam every time they try their own stores (which MS did already).

    verysoft,

The only reason anyone wants to sell consoles is to get you locked in that ecosystem and sell you games. They don't make a profit on the hardware, Xbox game pass is their headstart into purely game sales, well a subscription and cloud service that everyone is trying to jump on right now.

    verysoft,

Nintendo actually try something new with their consoles too, so that's at least good.
Everyone should be moving to PC though, you actually have freedom there. I think Steam machines would do pretty good if they came out now.

    verysoft,

Yes. Yes. Yes. The whale comment pisses me off, it might have been true initially, but these days all the average consumers spend money on this trash.

    verysoft,

The GitHub DMCA report linked in that post seems fake to me. It's unprofessionally written and has many mistakes and inconsistencies across it.

    verysoft,

Just looks crappy quality and uncomfortable. The Steam Deck is premium quality at a more affordable price, the point these 'competitors' seem to be missing while rushing for higher numbers on their spec sheets.

    verysoft,

I knew about the Fallout 4: New Vegas endeavour, but this one went completely under my radar until now - holy shit, that is an insane amount of content.

    verysoft,

They always pick fab artists for their sales honestly!

    verysoft,

Sad. We will just end up with geoff keighley's shitty events now.

Gamescom is still doing well though.

    verysoft,

They are just massive advertising circle-jerks.

    verysoft,

    *especially

    verysoft,

Of course its ads, but the main focus was the convention and not the streams. The crowds were fans and lots of developers got to show off their games. The game awards is just the worse part of e3 amplified, the awards themselves mean absolutely nothing, they are skipped over anyway, but imo gaming doesnt need an awards show, it's silly. The rest is just publishers paying for segments and a bunch of devs and random celebrities sit and watch in the crowd. I don't know how anyone sits and watches it. E3 was fun cause you could watch anyones perspective as they walked around and did interviews, met people etc, or even better if you could make it there yourself.

It was like computex of the gaming world, where any journalist could come and take part, which is not like geoff's bs at all.

    verysoft, (edited )

Yes... but E3 allowed smaller devs to get an audience and allow people to try their games for early feedback, it was a place for gamers to go and experience new games, meet people in the industry etc. The game awards is literally just a 3 hour long advert for the highest bidders. The game awards doesn't give a shit about anything but the money they are rolling in, they get more and more shameless with it each year, a lot of developers complained this year as they were quickly ushered off stage to make way for the next big advert.

    verysoft,

Yeah if you just watch the big players' streams from E3 then I can see the similarities.

Games don't need awards, it's just all subjective anyway and just gives the cringe oscars vibe of 'patting ourselves on the back'. You know if a game is good by it's player reviews and how many friends have told you to play it etc, we don't need a random set of judges deciding for us behind the scenes what the best games are.

    verysoft,

No, the players choose the player's choice winner and contribute only 10% towards the actual winners.

The games are nominated by a committee, the committee of 'game news organisations' is chosen by the 'advisory board' of the game awards, the board consists of Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, EA, Sony, Microsoft, Valve, Nintendo, Tencent, AMD, Riot Games, Rockstar Games, Epic Games and for some reason Kojima Productions. So they have the choice to pick their favourable 'news' outlets, which in turn will pick the nominees and the winners of the awards. There's a lot of room for bullshittery to happen and with some past winners/nominees, I wouldn't doubt there has been.

    verysoft,

People like Xbox would show off more games, from smaller devs, you can do a lot more in 3 days than you can in 3 hours. It was sad when they pulled out, that was the writing on the wall for E3, but its not even comparable to the game awards lmao, which is literally just a 3 hour ad break.

    verysoft,

Like CDPR changing Cyberpunk from RPG to Action-adventure. At least the game didn't release at that point though, but still. I mean Destiny even gets called an MMO when it isn't. Genre is kind of misused a lot, people just need to stop buying or getting invested in games that haven't even released.

    verysoft,

Rockstar really suck at trailers don't they. Normally the games speak for themselves though, so let's hope this is another good one.

    verysoft,

sips! now that's a real guy.

    verysoft,

Yeah, that's what all trailers are, but Rockstar ones are never that great. Compare them to, for example, Bethesda trailers. It's a night and day difference, even if the Rockstar games are usually better, the Bethesda trailers just instill more awe and hype imo. It's the way trailers usually tell a mini story, the music having impact with what's on screen and the Rockstar trailers usually miss the mark on this.

    verysoft,

Just rushed development usually with the bigger titles. The time isnt spent on performance, it's a case of spunking a game out and moving onto the next one.

    verysoft,

Also upgrade that CPU, you have so many good drop in replacement options with AM4 still.

    verysoft, (edited )

A good CPU upgrade here would cost like $150-200, hardly a lot given the cost of the games OP listed. The best they could go for being the 5800X3D, it's still a gaming powerhouse and a great upgrade for users on AM4.

There's only so much you can do to squeeze performance from years old hardware, upgrading is an eventual need you have to consider.

    verysoft,

I think it's safe to assume OP is not a pirate, given they mentioned both game pass and a sale :D

They are in a good spot for a CPU upgrade, with the socket being the same, they can jump 3 generations of CPUs for a drastic uplift in performance as it's bottlenecking their GPU atm. It's the most cost-effective part in this case as they wouldn't need to upgrade their motherboard at all, perhaps just a new cooler depending on what they have already.

    verysoft,

You are correct, the games are just shit.

    verysoft,

Yuppp it's a monster gaming CPU still, I love what AMD did with the longer-term socket support. I recently got a 7800X3D, it should last a long time, but having the piece of mind that in a few years I could just drop another AM5 CPU in if I needed or wanted to is great.

    verysoft,

Tomb Raider reboot is pretty well optimised. The games look beautiful with great performance. It used the in-house Foundation engine.

It's a shame the next game will be on UE5, UE games always a certain look and jank that just makes them feel 'cheap' to me. Along with, usually, a lot worse performance.
