This is the first time for me as well, and it sounds likely to be the last.

Can registrations on kbin.social be disabled to stop spammers (kbin.social) angielski

kbin.social is being overrun with spammers. Can we disable registrations on this instance so they can't keep creating new accounts? Every day I log on, I have to spend the first 20-30 minutes, reporting and blocking a bunch of new accounts....

Facebook doing edu (initially only one school) only was to target a specific audience. Google followed the exclusivity model to gain hype and encourage word of mouth.

Neither did it for security reasons and both switched to open sign-ups once they reached a certain level of users.

Really?

Doom's shareware sold Doom for me. Most recently the Tekken 8 demo sold itself. In between there have been a ton of games where the demo was helpful in deciding whether or not to play something.

I'm just surprised that in all that time there wasn't a single one that at a minimum confirmed a game was what you were expecting if you were on the fence.

I believe it, just surprised.

To be fair, in many of the GTA games, you’re not a bad guy.

I've played Vice City, 4 and 5 and every one of them started out with the main character(s) being a bad guy who is just a little less evil than the people around them, but still willing to kill to get what they want.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Being an ex criminal who is trying to reform after armed robberies, but still committing new crimes, is still being a bad guy. Choosing not to kill people doesn't make someone not a bad guy when they still continue to commit crimes as part of the game.

Painting the targets of their crimes as worse doesn't make them not bad people.

Me either, although a few years ago I sold some weapon skins and loot boxes that I received from playing CS Go when it first came out for enough Valve bucks or whatever to buy a couple of new games!

Loot boxes should not be in computer games.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Same! I don't play CS 2 and pretty much forgot that they do the lootbox thing.

snooggums,

As far as I can tell The Day Before was overhyped early and people bought it because of the marketing. Palworld did some advertising, but the mass adoption appears to be mostly word of mouth that the game is actually fun when it was made available in early access.

That matches what I have seen from people commenting and my personal experience as I don't remember hearing about it before and hopped on because of friends recommending it. Palworld is a word of mouth success like Valheim and for similar reasons of competent styling, smooth gameplay, and survival that isn't punishing the player from the moment the game starts.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Apparently not everyone knew the day before was a scam or it wouldn't have sold millions of units. Just because some people predicted it does not mean that the general population had any awareness of that expectation.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

I think it is more of a gameplay issue than a world building issue.

Fast travel solves a problem the developers create, needing to be in specific locations regularly to accomplish specific tasks. If you don't need to be anywhere in particular to offload collected items or to craft stuff, or return to someone to turn in quests to level, then you can just spend the time exploring at whatever pace you want.

Game design that makes repetitive travel necessary is when fast travel becomes necessary to avoid tedium.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Depends on the reason for traveling. If you are headed down the road to a goal and keep getting sidetracked by random encounters in a way that is distracting you from the thing you want to do then they just make travel tedious.

It all comes down to why am I traveling and why are encounters on the road more engaging than the reason for being on the road in the first place.

    It is an ad for sure, and the title is very misleading although the article clears some things up.

    The $120 million is self funded, which is why the amount is relevant.

    "In the works for 40 years" includes the time from when the idea to make the movie was conceived. That is common filmmaking terminology since a lot of films that are in the works end up having trouble finding funding or a distributor, and getting both are a big part of the process. Sometimes they take longer than the time from preproduction to the theater.

    In the works for 40 years is also a giant red flag and I assume it is going to be mediocre at best.

    snooggums,
    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

    They could release the game and add Eddy for free instead of delaying the whole release.

    snooggums,
    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

    Just because a character needs work after the target role was date does not mean it was outside the budget. Are quality of life upgrades after release outside the budget? What about adding support for ultra wide screens after release?

    No need to simp for a corporation. They are clearly releasing characters slowly for more profit compared to several past releases that had dozens of characters included.

    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

    Picking pronouns is like picking height/weight/any other customization, just how you want to be seen or what text to put in the lines NPCs say to your character.

    What an idiot.

    I'm feeling this one.

    Have CoD MW2 on steam because it is one of the few games that I can do cross play with a friend who only plays on consoles and I'm on PC. They changed the steam launcher with CoD MW3 to some combined thing that launches, then I pick MW2 and the new launcher closes and then starts MW2 from scratch.

    Yes, the launcher launches so that it can close and open MW2 like it used to.

    But the best part is that CoD on PC does the thing where the game loads, tells you it has and update and requires a restart, Then when it restarts it has to update shaders. The best part is that both the stupid launcher and MW2 have separate updates and shaders. So the worst one was launcher has an update and has to load twice and complete shaders. Then MW2 starts and then requires an update, restarts and then shaders.

    That's right, one time it took launching FOUR times and two sets of shaders just to start playing.

    It is now uninstalled and is one of the few games on steam that I reviewed just so I could complain about this stupid design. Feels good to vent again because I had a ton of fun that made restarting twice annoying but tolerable, but always launching twice and sometimes more is just ridiculous.

    snooggums,
    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

    It is the same launcher as Warzone!

    I would bet the main launcher's shaders that then closes to launch MW2 is doing the Warzone shaders. Before MW3 came out it would just do shaders once for both Warzone and MW2.

    Another is any game that adjusts comeback mechanics during the course of a match, because I’ve never understood punishing someone for playing well

    The idea behind it is aiming for a close ending for a variety of skill sets by trying to balance things as the last minute, but it certainly feels like punishing anyone who does well early on.

    Some implementations are kinda fun when they seem like actual balancing, but only if they are early enough for the winning team/person to be able to address and not some unstoppable surprise on the last lap/few seconds of a match like a blue shell in Mario Kart.

    Like all entertainment, being an author is generally not lucrative unless you are established as an author or some other kind of entertainer with name recognition. Once you are and can negotiate things like film rights or future book royalties then the sky is the limit.

    I mix it up and play a wide variety of character genders, races, ethnicities and species. Whatever catches my eye during character creation for the most part, and if I replay a game I actively pick something different on different play throughs as it is a reminder that I'm playing this character instead of a different character.

    So I don't actively or exclusively play female characters for a significant reason, just aesthetics of the game.

    Being unable to uninstall/choose not to install the 4k textures tied to ultra/very high settings that you will never use so they clutter up your storage space is a problem. If they aren't installed then the highest settings can be disabled until they are installed.

    A skybox using a 4k texture on low is fine, we are talking about the textures that are only used when the settings are set to 4k or ultra or whatever.

    Bought my first Steam Deck after seeing the deep discounts on refurbs...what should i know as a first time Steam Deck/PC gamer?

    Depends on if you want ray tracing, but running it is as low as a 2060 and even a 3060 is recommended without ray tracing for 1440 at medium, which is supposed to still look pretty good.
