Potatos_are_not_friends,

Im from the States and the moment RadioShack went all in on selling Cell Phones, they died.

The tech wizards shared ancient stories around the campfire of being able to buy radio parts at RadioShack. I was not of that era.

Users who purchased Redfall’s “Bite Back Edition” were promised additional DLC, which ended up being cancelled.

I am having an extremely hard time that there were many affected.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Incredible. Thank you modders!

Potatos_are_not_friends,

This is going to sound weird but Japanese companies seem to have a lot of problems with multiplayer. Im thinking of fighting games and Nintendo. Which is weird because Korea is big on MMOs and strong networking so I dunno.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I played this a few years ago on GamePass and disliked it. But that was before I understood how survival games worked thanks to Valheim, Raft and Grounded.

Worth it to take it for another spin?

Potatos_are_not_friends,

It says Valve “forces” game publishers to sign up to so-called price parity obligations, preventing titles being sold at cheaper prices on rival platforms.

Ms Shotbolt says this has enabled Steam to charge an “excessive commission of up to 30%”, making UK consumers pay too much for purchasing PC games and add-on content.

This is actually the norm on a lot of platforms unfortunately. Apple. Google Play. Not at all unique to Valve.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

There was a indie dev, the Spiderweb games guy, who refused to use Steam for years and he sold his games on his website. I think it was from like 2008 all the way to 2022. Refused to give Valve a cut.

Then he finally released it on Steam and he wrote a blog post how his niche games sold extremely well and regrets leaving so much money on the table for years.

I tried to find the blog post but no luck.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

A few years ago, I got this game for $2 and it absolutely scratched my Destiny 2 itch. Even bought the DLC at full price.

Then the usual Ubisoft BS rolled around and I just dropped it.

Behind ‘Suicide Squad,’ the Year’s Biggest Video-Game Flop (archive.is)

Behind the scenes, according to interviews with nearly two dozen people who requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to the press, the development of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a tumultuous affair, plagued by countless delays. The game failed for a number of reasons, said the people,...

Potatos_are_not_friends,

It’s crazy there are apologists for this.

“Oh well obviously save files shouldn’t be that big” – are you kidding me? This is the whole point of providing a storefront service.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Steam puts the player peak for the episode release at just 559 players, and it’s down to peaking under 500 even on the weekend here.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Since it’s easier for me to read vs watch a video I got a summary from AI.

======

The video appears to be about a critical review of a role-playing game (RPG) called “The Time of Troubles” developed by the Russian government. The reviewer criticizes the game’s story, historical inaccuracies, and glitches.

Here are some details gleaned from the video description:

The game is set during the “Time of Troubles” in Russian history, a period of political and social unrest in the early 17th century. The reviewer criticizes the game’s portrayal of the era, claiming historical inaccuracies. The video mentions issues like bugs and glitches that the reviewer encountered while playing the game. The reviewer criticizes the game’s design choices, such as making a high-level class available early in the game.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Thanks for clearing it up.

I’m a human and I’m telling you to stop using AI.

Until people start posting summaries with their video posts, AI is unfortunately the next best thing. Not everyone has the time to watch.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

You might enjoy CRPG Addict’s blog posts about his adventure in Wizardry for DOS.

I beat it through emulation and save scumming, but his playthrough was a lot more tactical, and now Im starting to understand I’m not support to just hit the attack button over and over again!

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Shame. The game looked great. But the beta state and bugs kept me from committing.

Not certain how the company plans to fix all of that with a smaller staff.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I’m still optimistic. No Man’s Sky, Cyberpunk, and Fallout 76 took their heaping trash and glued things until it became fun. And Starfield has a lot of really good working pieces that can be salvaged.

But you might also be right. I can’t imagine Bethesda fixing quests or narrative elements.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Bingo! It’s written in a “cover my ass” but that ass can get kicked by the courts.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

It’s a mobile game from NetEase. I think it’s a excellent opportunity to be a madlad and review it like that because fuck them.

Aww boo hoo I can’t review any more of their shitty gacha games?

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Going to throw a shout out for Against The Storm.

It takes my favorite part of Age of Empires (setting up the dang base) and distills it into the perfect game.

Now if someone can figure out how to make the other half (the combat) really good.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I think when they fixed all the obvious jank, went all in on the world building and strong storytelling, and timed it with the incredibly excellent Cyberpunk Edge runners series… Everything turned around.

The game is still pretty crappy as a open-world, loot still feels halfbaked and honestly combat is so dumb that I have to gimp myself and refuse to pick certain skills just to have some challenge.

But I ignore it because when the story pulls you in, you’re hooked!

Potatos_are_not_friends,

The NPCs constantly broke immersion for me. It’s the same 10 people over and over again.

Or if you’re fighting baddies or cops, they all act the same.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

The stupid decision to reuse the name confused the fuck out of people. I being one of them.

Prey was a spiritual successor to System Shock 2. And it was so stupidly good and upset at myself for not playing it until years later.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I’m sure there will be a headcount of how many people will be leaving/fired.

But from the sounds of it, they are folding game devs into other teams.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

This is accurate. I work at a international company. We will tell a bunch of countries to go fuck themselves since combined, they make like 1% of sales.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong. I’m just saying it’s a thing many companies do.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

If the past thirty years of Sony history has anything to say… I’m sure they’re doing this right now:

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Their public transit is top fucking notch though.

I’ve been to Japan a few times. Only Tokyo is super accurate with time. Go to any other Japanese city and it’s no different from any other city in the world. Late trains. Buses that are 10 mins late or not even showing.

Can we kill this narrative that Japan is hyper efficient with public transportation?

Potatos_are_not_friends,

It’s common knowledge that the creative designer hates MTX and chooses to put easily accessible items in the store to satisfy capcom shareholders.

Nah not common knowledge.

Doesn’t matter. Call out shit when you see it. What’s really disappointing is your fanboyism to all of this.

This is unironically some of the player-friendliest MTX we’ve seen in years for single player adventure games, no actual content walled by dollar value on the disc, but people like you who haven’t even watched ten minutes of gameplay are generating infinite negative press.

Do you realize how you sound? I was originally going to mock you, but I really believe you mean well.

Don’t defend this practice.

Imagine if they put ads on the pause screen. If someone said, “It keeps video game prices low!” That’s extremely debatable. You can point to how cheap games are. You can point to how many games are made without ads. You can show data how developers don’t see a penny. You can even point to the thousands of games that were released without ads on pause screens.

Wouldn’t your efforts be better focused on actual predatory titles?

Who cares about Magical Girl mobile gacha or whatever. If Nintendo made micro transactions in a Zelda game that’s this idiotic, you bet people will shit on it. Capcom is a major game developer, and by doing this, they’re signaling to other companies that this is okay.

That’s unacceptable. And Capcom deserves all the bad publicity.

You can absolutely go, “It’s all optional it’s all easy to get you don’t have to spend a penny”… Your willingness to make it the norm is problematic.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I was telling my coworker about how annoyed I am at Ubisoft and their many anti-consumer practices and he shrugs and goes, “I kinda like separate launchers.”

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Because then it will be lame after a decade.

I cringe at all the Easter eggs and In-jokes of the 80s-90s.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Seriously. Definitely gives the loudest a place to control how games should work. And when they don’t get their way, they get loud in other places and make drama.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

As they should. Sometimes indie games should just be art.

My games (really shitty demos), I’m personally not interested in building a audience or getting mass attention. I just wanna make the game in my head and if it kicks ass for others, sweet.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I don’t think the gameplay is fun at all.

It’s the story - it’s so freaking engaging. And I’ll deal with the boring point and click finding for clues, if I get to learn more how the sumo wrestler man was not the killer.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I beat all the Danganronpas and the mini games during the trials are so annoying. I get they wanted to change things up. But at no point did I go, “Aw hell yeah peak gaming”.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I played Resident Evil 4 (the original 2005, not the remake) for the first time last year. That same year, I bought Diablo 4, Starfield, Hogwarts legacy, and a bunch of other games.

RE4 from 2005 was the only game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Yep

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior - (1991)

Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition - (1992)

Street Fighter II’: Hyper Fighting - (1992)

Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers - (1993)

Super Street Fighter II Turbo - (1994)

All $40-60 games at the time.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

StarCraft Brood Wars Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction

People shit on Bethesda but they’ve consistently released banger expansions. Far Harbor was incredible.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

As a budding game developer, watching mobile games dominate all the game awards is so incredibly frustrating.

My first game award, I watched those Farmville motherfuckers take award after award, while amazing indie games are given lip service but not the trophy.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

During the darkest moments the pandemic, I needed something to take my mind off of reality. So I skipped to One Piece 500ish and just started reading. Didn’t really love it, but didn’t really hate it. Then around 600ish, it started clicking. And then by 650, I couldn’t believe I was rooting for Luffy and the Straw Hat crew.

Now I’m at 1100 and part of the extremely annoying crowd who talk about One Piece.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

For me, every single FF game took me a couple hours before I really hits.

FF3 was so incredibly hard for me to get into because it just seems like one trope after another. Then it just clicked and now it’s one of my favorites.
