Potatos_are_not_friends,

During the darkest moments the pandemic, I needed something to take my mind off of reality. So I skipped to One Piece 500ish and just started reading. Didn’t really love it, but didn’t really hate it. Then around 600ish, it started clicking. And then by 650, I couldn’t believe I was rooting for Luffy and the Straw Hat crew.

Now I’m at 1100 and part of the extremely annoying crowd who talk about One Piece.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

You’re conflating two different things.

There’s modders who whine about working for free. And yes, modding is a choice.

Where in this incident is stolen work.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

This is awesome. Thanks for the recommendation!

Been having a Metroidvania itch and currently playing Afterimage.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Jupiter Hell was okay. I absolutely LOVED doomRL, and felt the jump to Jupiter Hell, not certain why it didn’t click. The controls are interesting. And would still support the dev.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

That reminder that the cult is just expendable resources made me love the game. I name them after my family and friends, and after I ran out of names, started adding numbers. So sacrificing Mom 4 and Sister 5 to the Outer Gods, only to save a new cult member and naming them Mom 5 and Sister 6 makes me laugh.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Steam Deck has been a game changer. Easier to play a crappy game for 10 minutes on a handheld while watching tv.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Imo, FO4 did everything better than FO3, except the plot. But FO3’s plot was already kinda bland to begin with. I mean, back then… It was incredible. But not by today’s standards.

The Feds Are Coming for “Extremist” Gamers (theintercept.com) angielski

Gaming companies are coordinating with the FBI and Department of Homeland Security to root out so-called domestic violent extremist content, according to a new government report. Noting that mechanisms have been established with social media companies to police extremism, the report recommends that the national security agencies...

Potatos_are_not_friends,

But gamers wanna complain rather than open their goddamn eyes.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I was surprised they were still cranking out episodes. I watched one last year out of boredom. It wasn’t even funny. It was just like… CGI doing CGI stuff.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

First impressions, I thought it was going to be a boring on-rails walk simulator.

Then I teared up at the end with Delilah. I can’t believe how good the acting is for me to fall in love with a voice.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

They’re incredible.

I hooked my wife with Rusty Lake Hotel, which is probably the easiest entry point into the whole series.

Then we went into a few cube games, and then Rusty Lake Roots, which is so well made and where all the best lore is.

Did some more cube games, and right into Rusty Lake Paradise and Samara Room, and Underground Blossom.

I also didn’t tell her The Past Within is also a Rusty Lake game, so when she saw the connections while we were playing, her excitement went through the roof.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I played BioShock like 3-4 times! There’s just so many ways to go through a level with different character builds!

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I went so hard on Danganronpa. And I hate visual storybook games.

But the incredibly well written scenarios, the intrigue, and the overall wackiness really pulls you in.

I think about the series a lot.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Does it hold up?

I never played Myst as a kid but when I tried it a few years ago, the puzzles seem really hard and abstract by today’s standards.

And I played a LOT of point and click games, and most I can solve without a walkthrough. But the 15 mins in Myst felt like I need to play it with a guide.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Am I missing something? I tried it for 5 minutes and felt like I didn’t understand?

I put it in the Goat Simulator territory of twitch players love it because it’s great for streaming and doing weird shit.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Absolutely this! I hate that I now know how to think in the Superliminal world.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I felt like the gimmick in Road 96 wasn’t worth it.

It feels more like window dressing. Turning night into day. Or instead of looking for a walkie talkie, it’s batteries.

The beats are too specific and if you had one motorcycle minigame, you had them all.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Suggestion: I want to feel guilt for even considering the button.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Of all the self labeled AAAA games, this is easily the best, no contest.

No contest on account of there only being one.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

As a hobbyist game developer, my game also has record player engagement.

My wife played it for about 15 mins.

Borderlands players - what is your opinion about the new movie trailer? (piped.kavin.rocks) angielski

Apologies that this is not a pure gaming question, but I’d really like to hear people’s opinion on the Borderlands movie trailer and especially from people who have played the games. That’s why I’m asking here, I hope that’s ok.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

He would have cheaped out with some no-name actors. He knows the kind of movies he makes.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Gaming on the PC around the 90s-2000s was pretty rough. I remember installing a game from a CD, typing the key on the back of the CD, and installation failed because I needed different sound drivers or something. I remember most games on my janky PC would be a gamble if it worked or not, even if it met minimum specs.

I remember still facing that issue in around 2010s even with Steam, and then seeing how slick installing apps were on the iPhone and it just “worked”, and wishing PC games were as simple.

PC gaming is great now. It’s been a long time coming.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Im frequently been surprised by their choices for years, since at least 2005. Like some companies, you KNOW what they’re like. They do consistent impressive work like FromSoft, Nintendo, Valve. Some companies do consistent work that can be hit/miss, like Capcom. And others just do consistent work that gets a lot of shitty management decisions, like Ubisoft.

Sega doesn’t fit any of those buckets. No consistency except that they’re not consistent. You don’t know what a Sega title will bring. Like they rotate management every week.

Do you find open source games interesting/good thing as a gamer?

@games I am a game developer working on game called Mushy Score. I decided that my niche would be to create open source games. I think these could be helpful for developers or teachers to teach about games and how they are made. Most open source games are small game jam games, but there are few “real games” that are open source like 0 A.D. and Doom. As a non-developer do you think open source games could be good thing?

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I started building games thanks to open source.

It’s why I open source all my demos.

So the least it can do is inspire future developers.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I’d do it. Give me a steam deck, and linux laptop with ebooks.

Potatos_are_not_friends, (edited )

We already had Sonic with guns and Sonic kissing a human princess. Nothing will ruin my affection for the blue hedgehog.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

The shareholders at the local yacht club were really bummed out because many of them were saving really hard to add another ship to their collection, and some might even have to cancel a 2 week international vacation. Ive started a GoFundMe because no shareholder should feel so deprived of those basic needs.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Honestly most anime games were hot garbage. Kinda like games based on movies.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot was incredible though. And was really wishing it kicked off a revolution, but nope. One Piece pirate warrior series is only fun because it’s just Dynasty Warriors with a anime reskinning.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Book of Demons was so good. Shame the roadmap the indie studio made couldn’t be met. It was wildly ambitious.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Makes sense. No need to burn bridges or salt the wound.

Maybe Eidos would love to get another Deus ex out there but there’s no publisher interest. Passionate game developers still need financial backing to pay rent and put food on the table.

And honestly silence is the best policy here. They probably want to stop him from fucking up before he ends up like voice actor who played Niko Bellick and say something that pisses off their parent publishers.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Yeah, but you see… Doom was a rare unicorn. It came with refreshing ideas, looked visually attractive, played good, and was fun.

That’s a tall ask from EA.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

It wasn’t just a harder version.

Miyamoto handed it off to another director, and wasnt really focused. It broke the game design rules that he created. Power ups were supposed to reward you. The game had a lot of unfairness for the sake of messing with players.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I’m currently playing Elden Ring and it’s so freaking massive. It’s incredible what From soft choice to include. There’s whole areas that are completely gated for a hard-to-find side quest, that you’ll only discover if you happen to follow a guide.

Any other company would have chopped the content and put it in a DLC.

And here they’re like, “We got more just wait.”

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I wish cloudpunk had optional fetch quests. I liked the narrative. I enjoyed the experience.

But the world is so big and I want to just mindlessly chill and be a taxi/delivery driver and watch a optional meaningless bar go up.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

There was a similar comment about that. How they are in a sunk cost fallacy for all the GaaS promises they made a few years ago. And to not release it means they make zero.

Versus releasing and maybe they make some money back.

Hoping they could salvage something.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

On one hand, Vampire Survivor is super addictive and just extremely well made and feature rich. I recommend it to everyone.

On the other hand, please help me.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

They need help. It’s literally the topic.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Code Veronica’s controls felt outdated when it came out! I love that game but it was so painful dying because of control issues. Id love to replay it without that pain.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

The Yakuza team, to release games so frequently (like 1-2 a year) has small teams work on multiple games at once. So like the minigame team may be building games for all of them in a year.

It could be similar with Capcom.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

The previous section hints at something pretty important, but maybe non-obvious: I assert that MetroidVania is not a genre, it’s a framework - a way of structuring games and most specifically the worlds they take place in.

And

This realization that ‘MetroidVania’ is not a genre helps explain why a game like Batman: Arkham Asylum can be thought of as a MetroidVania where its sequels wouldn’t be, even though almost all aspects of the gameplay are very similar.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I read it was a weird half baked game. Not in a bad way. Like, they made a meme game but they’re actively trying.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Can you explain more about all the pals with rifles - and how they fit in?

Screenshots make it look like it’s edgy pokemon with guns.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Every few weeks there’s like a major update with these devs!

It feels like Terraria all over again in terms of new stuff getting added frequently!

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Same!! Not daily, but at least 30-40 times a year for over a decade! Happy to find another 360 controller user. Those Xbox 360 controllers are fantastic.

Had to stop using them last year. I had the wireless adapter plugged into a windows 10 computer, and its drivers kept failing to be recognized after every restart. After maybe the hundred time, I gave up and bought a $20 USB knockoff which so far, feels the same!
