banana_meccanica, do games w Why Unity's New Install Fees Are Spurring Massive Backlash Among Game Developers - IGN

They must have lost their minds. Bankrupt or even pay Unity back for a successful game you made and finished months ago? I hope they get legal action.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Seriously. If they were changing the terms going forward, that’d at least be defensible, but trying to make it apply to everything that’s ever been made is just nonsensical.

Fubarberry,
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Even then it would be pretty bad for a lot of devs. If you’ve been developing a game in unity for years, you can’t just easily change engines just because they’ve changed the rules of using their engine.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

I agree with you; they’d have to give plenty of notice that the changes were coming and maybe even offer exemptions for developers who can show they were working on something significantly before the announcement… I don’t think there’s any way they could reasonably do it that would avoid all backlash, but this just seems like the absolute worst way to handle it.

4am,

So they owe devs on all previous installs? Like back payment? Or just going forward if you’ve ever used Unity?

KoboldCoterie, (edited )
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Any future installs starting on January 1. It does, however, mean that many developers will be more or less forced to pull their games off of storefronts, if it actually goes through. It also means that if you bought a Unity game in the past, you’re costing the developer money every time you install it (again, if this actually goes through - I can’t imagine they won’t backpedal.)

The real issue with this isn’t the policy itself, which I would bet money won’t actually be enacted, but the fact that Unity (thinks they) can just unilaterally and retroactively change their policies. If this actually held up in court, which I think is a tenuous possibility at best (but I am not a lawyer so take that with a grain of salt), it sets an awful, awful precedent.

NotMyOldRedditName,

If they can change the terms of games already released and ask for a % per install, what’s stopping them from just asking for 100% and saying suck it bitches.

Pollution and nuclear war destroyed the environment.

Crime has overtaken the country. It doesn’t matter who you are: you are either one of them, or on the receiving end.

Breathable air is a subscription service, and price hikes happen every other month to please shareholders.

Game devs are still releasing games for the PS4 and XOne consoles. Nobody has yet understood the purpose of the next gen consoles. Every other day, someone screams “but muh exclusives!” to the sky. But no one answers back. God remains silent.

Eh, I dunno about the rest of you, but after 2077 I feel pretty good. Tuned out Starfield and the initial craze and feel…no fomo. I wait for games like BG3 to come out of early access before playing, and only play the games in early access that are actually worth it, like Sons of The Forest, which was pretty decent even at launch (when the fun bugs are still in, and weapons have not been balanced in the slightest!)

I’m hitting the now old classics, Battlefield 1 is excellent, Inscryption is awesome, and the AA and AAA games I do play are quite polished.

If you can count on games just being shitty at launch, you have nothing to worry about. I’ll play the last of us in a few years. I played Days Gone recently and loved it. There’s enough good games these days to have a packed steam library.

Lowered_lifted, do gaming w Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3 Revive Age-Old RPG Debate About Encumbrance

It’s such a trash game mechanic because it forces realism where there is none. You have faster than light travel in your game? Why don’t you have teleporters? You have magic in your game? Why don’t you have a Bag of Holding? If you are going to impose the constraint on the player for balance or gameplay reasons then at least make it fun, have a mechanic that is interesting in some way. Maybe teleporters and bags of Holding are expensive to build or don’t get unlocked until you collect 10 flippityboos but at least reward progression and picking up objects and don’t turn every decision into agony.

LunarLoony,
@LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

RuneScape has an excellent fast travel system. In fact, it has a whole bunch of 'em, and you have to work for them; either by completing quests, or by training your skills. You can also get items to expand your inventory somewhat, but they only work for specific item types.

Lowered_lifted,

RuneScape did it pretty well for sure yeah I always felt like there was a good level progression for items like at level 60 in old school bronze items were just straight up trash lol

li10, (edited )

Even if they think it’s a fun mechanic, they fundamentally fucked the amount you can carry imo. Should be higher than it is by default, because I straight up don’t want to waste skill points on that.

Then they’ve fucked the amount of cargo you can have on a ship. Either make it infinite, or ridiculously high even for a small ship.

I’ve got multiple freight containers on my ship, and apparently each can only carry about the same amount as my character??

Star Citizen is in this picture. They added hunger and dehydration to a space exploration, cargo, and fighting game.

dodos,

I really feel there would be a market for something like star citizen without all the realism stuff that gets in the way of the gameplay. I’m a backer, and when I can get to playing the game it’s fun, but finding my way to the launch pad after every two years break when I’m trying to checkup on progress sucks.

dragonfucker,

You’re talking about No Man’s Sky and Elite Dangerous. The whole point of Star Citizen is the realism.

Drag thinks hunger mechanics in a spaceship game are too much, though.

Maggoty,

Same here, I loved the idea of a walk on space game I could play with friends. I loved the idea of ground side fights and boarding actions.

But now we’ve got some kind of super high fidelity survival game. If you can even run it it’s far more akin to an first person POV EVE.

I cannot believe nobody has made a space game since, where being the master of your ship is the whole goal. Basically Euro truck simulator in space. One of the nice things about that game is that all the gamey stuff is just handled by menus so that you can actually get to the experience without having to wander around a supplemental environment that doesn’t really add anything to the experience.

Maggoty,

It is, it’s also in alpha still. If they were claiming beta in this state I’d be more worried rather than just mad they keep adding stupid shit instead of going full optimization. They have a game, they just need to get it out the door and worry about content in future releases. It’s like the painter who can’t call a painting finished.

MrScottyTay,

After what feels like 20 years, it still being in alpha should worry you more than if this current state was called a beta.

Maggoty,

Yes and no. On the other side they’ve essentially rebooted development something like 3 or 4 times. So there’s a chance it comes up roses.

MrScottyTay,

intensely_human,

It’s like trying to trace an outline of a fractal.

echodot,

They can claim whatever they want. But if it’s publicly available then it’s a beta regardless of what arbitrary name they give it.

If it was alpha it should be free.

Cypher,

The industry definitions of alpha/beta disagree with you.

Words have meaning and you’re using them wrong.

echodot,

You are correct words do have a meaning. A weird thing for you to bring up since you’re the one incorrectly applying labels here.

Alpha products are available only for internal review, they are not available for public release they are not intended to be viewed by the general populace.

If you’re charging people money for it then it can’t be an alpha because now it’s an external product not an internal sample.

Cypher,

In video games development, and more broadly in software development, Alpha state refers to a feature incomplete and largely untested state and is unrelated to internal/external sales, review, testing or release.

Alpha software is not thoroughly tested by the developer before it is released to customers.

While outside of recent trends, particularly in crowd funded games development, alpha releases to customers for paid software are less common they do occur and don’t have any bearing on the alpha state of the software.

In general, external availability of alpha software is uncommon for proprietary software, while open source software often has publicly available alpha versions.

Further

A feature-complete (FC) version of a piece of software has all of its planned or primary features implemented but is not yet final due to bugs, performance or stability issues. This occurs at the end of alpha testing in development.

And for Beta

Beta, named after the second letter of the Greek alphabet, is the software development phase following alpha. A beta phase generally begins when the software is feature-complete but likely to contain several known or unknown bugs

I am both a qualified software developer, and have worked in the video games industry. I hope you have learnt something.

Maggoty,

Okay? But it’s still definitely an alpha.

echodot,

Okay whatever you need to say to justify it to yourself.

This game came out before I went into university I’ve now graduated and could have completed a doctorate and it still wouldn’t have been in beta yet. Is the development studio near black hole or something what’s going on here.

kureta,
setsneedtofeed,
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed.

Asafum,

I’ll be “that guy” but according to Chris Roberts (the guy who owns CIG that is making the game) star citizen is supposed to be a “space life” game. It’s not an “arcade game” where there is a specific game type it is built around. You’re supposed to just be a dude/dudette living your life out in space and do what you want which can include all the things you mentioned. I personally want that very much. There are a million games out there that do the basic space pew pew thing or mining, but nothing like a life sim.

There’s going to be more than just hunger and dehydration, they built toilets and showers into some ships for a specific reason not just atheistics lol

Maggoty,

Yeah, the problem is it wasn’t sold as a space life game a decade ago. And there’s a vast gulf between space life sim and actually having to eat/pee. It was already controversial when he said capital ships wouldn’t despawn so you’ll have to hide it and keep a 24/7 watch to make sure it isn’t stolen. A game isn’t supposed to be a job, there’s got to be a happy medium there.

It’s not as bad as the mobile version from 2014 (seriously, go look it up if you don’t believe me!), but I still prefer the original art and sprites. Butchered is maybe too strong a word though, that’s more fair to say about the mobile version.

EDIT: forgot to mention they used the GBA translation as a base and discarded many iconic Woolsey lines from the original, like “son of a submariner!”. There are obviously a lot more changes but I’m not going to be full purist and claim everything was objectively better on the SNES just because that’s the version I’m used to. Arcane austin was already killed by the development of redfall. Most of the talent responsible for making dishonered and prey the games they were left during development of redfall. If arcane austin went back to making immersive sims instead of closing, it would be a new team making it, with little help from the pedegree implied by arcane’s legacy.

Keep in mind however that arcane was two studios, the main studio in lyon france, and the other in austin texas. Dishonered was developed jointly. Dishonored 2 was lyon, pray was austin, and deathloop was lyon.

The lyon studio still exists. They are continuing to make games. The only thing announced from arcane is the marvel’s blade game. Not optimistic, but arcane may still be around a while yet.
