Welcome to the world of QA, where upper management is constantly asking, “What is the point of your department? Why shouldn’t we just roll this into Dev’s workload?”

I’m not convinced any online-only games are worth anyone’s time if they’re planned as a live service game from the get-go. When Halo: Infinite F2P multiplayer dropped, so many people on the Halo subreddit were like “yeah, it’s fun but the battlepass is so slow to progress that I feel like I don’t have a reason to keep playing.” Uhhhhh maybe keep playing because you’re having fun? Or do you need some artificial number to tell you to keep going?

Seems like a confusing shift in the target demographic where battlepasses and constant new updates are required in order to consider a game “worth your time.”

squeaky old man voice back in my day my brothers and I would play CoD: Zombies using the exact same strategies every day after school for years with no updates to the gameplay AND WE LIKED IT

jose1324,

Yeah I don’t get it either. Everyone rn is saying that Halo infinite multiplayer sucks because you “have to” pay for cosmetics or do lots of shit to progress the battlepass.

Literally all COSMETIC. Like it’s not even pay to win, just play the genuinely fun multiplayer game wtf

BmeBenji,

Yeah, if the game is fun then ignore the cosmetics. If you like the cosmetics enough, then buy the cosmetics. As long as gameplay elements aren’t locked behind a paywall, I see no problem.

alienanimals,

Halo Infinite’s problem isn’t that there’s a store where you can buy cosmetic items. It’s that the game was built AROUND the store. Cosmetics took a priority over gameplay, features, etc.

jose1324,

What priority? Gameplay is fine to me and what missing features?

alienanimals, (edited )

The previous Halo games prioritized features over microtransactions. There are tons of articles lamenting all the things left out of Halo Infinite e.g. screenrant.com/halo-infinite-launch-missing-featu…

I see you were too young to have played previous Halo titles and so you immediately downvoted without giving a response. I’m sorry you’re too ignorant to realize what they stole from you.

I will never not be mad at that.

Let’s take the show halo fans have wanted for decades now, bring in a bunch of people who know nothing about the franchise, forbid them from learning about the franchise, and then we’ll market to people who don’t care about the franchise.

Corpo marketing big brains right there. Halo has one of the largest followings in gaming and still that wasn’t enough. Hell the fans would have encouraged others to watch but nooo had to make it bland and generic for non fans. And they didn’t even do that well!

That was basically what happened between Fallout 2 and Fallout 3.

It’s a lot of things, but what I said there was true. They literally forbade the writers from playing any of the games or reading the books. They wanted to “attract a new audience” and “make something new”. So now instead of the TV show all of us fans wanted we have something with master chief and if you squint your eyes it might look like a halo plotline

smeg,

That’s… a bold decision. Who pays for the rights to a well-known character/IP with lots of fans and then decides they want to attract a new audience instead? Guessing it was pretty poorly received?

My money is on BG3 for Goty. It addressed a ton of the complaints there had been circulating about modern games for the last 10 years.

I only played totk and wonder at the moment but I think every entry on the list would be justified to win it. With the amount of great games we had this year, it’s already impressive to be on the list.

I was really excited for it before launch but now that the dust has settled I probably won’t buy it when it hits PC. The RPG mechanics are apparently really shallow and there’s a lot of fluff and sidequests that ruin the pacing. I kept seeing gameplay and I still can’t get over how tanky enemies are too, it looks like you’d wail on one enemy for 3 minutes until it gives out.

Hopefully they can pull a FF15 and fix most of the issues with the game in patches.

Even_Adder,

If it’s three minutes for a boss, I think that’s reasonable. Do you have any examples you can show me? From what I’ve seen, the fights are pretty quick in this game.

gamermanh,

The first Eikon fight (probably what you could describe as the end of the tutorial) took me almost 20 minutes to finish.

I was barely hit by her, I didn’t have to redo it, it just took fucking ages.

And yes, I was using my special abilities and not just spamming square. My wife was watching me play out of slexcitement and halfway through she literally said “oh my God why is her health bar that big this is so boring”

ETA: I feel that my skill as a gamer needs to be elaborated on for full effect. Not bragging, just saying:

I’ve beaten every Souls game more than once. I beat lies of P on my first playthrough with less than 30 deaths total. I’ve been playing third person action RPGs for 20 or so years now and this is the FIRST MAJOR RPG I’ve EVER played that felt this dumbed down and boring. I was trying to be hyped with Sokens amazing music blaring and the cool visuals and all, but the gameplay is boooooorrringg

Even_Adder,

Souls games are a whole different beast from this type of game. It doesn’t really prepare you for managing cooldowns and doing complex attack strings. They train you to be careful and win without taking big risks, which sounds like the strategy you executed. From what I can tell almost half of that fight is cutscenes, which isn’t ideal.

I will agree with you that the gameplay seems boring though. They could have done more. I’m told that it gets better when you unlock more moves and mechanics.

aStonedSanta,

I had this same thing happen with kingdom hearts 3. Even on hard. So god damn boring.

newthrowaway20,

it looks like you’d wail on one enemy for 3 minutes until it gives out.

Oh you’ll wail a lot longer than that in some cases. Some of the summon boss fights took like 30~45 mins of wailing. And yes. The RPG elements are non existent, and the side quests are incredibly shallow and boring. You are spot on. No status effects, no elemental affinities, absolutely minimal equipment and weapon systems which amount to basically making a single number go up. It was honestly embarrassing as far as gameplay goes.

sub_, (edited ) do gaming w Here Are The Nominees For The Game Awards 2023 - Game Informer

Dave the Diver shouldn’t be categorized as an indie game

Dave the Diver is developed by Mintrocket. Mintrocket is not an indie company, it is not acquired by Nexon, it’s actually a sub-brand / division by Nexon. It is a sub-division of a giant company.

There are many indie devs that rely on being nominated to Indie category awards, for exposure, for the ability to stay afloat in business. What Dave the Diver is doing, is to take over a slot that might be the make / break event for smaller indie companies.

Think about the reason why there are specialized bundles for indie games, why people retweet / share info for indie exposure.

  • If Ubisoft were to spin-off a sub division to make Child of Light, would we have labeled Child of Light as indie (not some weird AAA indie game)?
  • If ALDI came into United States and spun off smaller mom-and-pop / bodega looking shops to compete with local mom-and-pop stores, do you still consider this spinoff as a local shop that need local support?
  • If your government creates a grant to fund small local companies, and a giant MNC spun off its brand to compete for the grant, are we even still in this discussion?

Dave the Diver should be competing in other categories, just not in indies.

Also Nexon is scummy kinda like EA of Korea, shutting down games abruptly, fined for loot box exploitations, they have market cap of $17B.

Excerpt from an interview with the devs: www.gameple.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=207…

Q. There are questions as to whether ‘Dave the Diver’ was a success purely due to development. One indie developer said, “Is it true that Nexon is invading the indie market?” There are also voices saying: Please give your brief thoughts about it.

Jaeho Hwang: To put it simply, our game is not an indie game. Indie respects developers who work harder and with fewer resources than we do. There is a GJA indie game candidate from overseas. It seems that the definition seen overseas is a little different. Unlike receiving overwhelming support from Nexon, they gave us autonomy.

MJBrune,

While I agree at heart, the term indie sucks for this reason exactly. It fits the definition and most indie games you’d find wouldn’t actually fit the definition.

The man is an actual genius, I can’t believe how varied the OST is, from operatic, to jazz, etc, every track just works. He is at the same level of genius we all felt about Mick Gordon on his Doom OSTs, and maybe better. I know I’m dealing with recency bias, but this is one of my favorite games of all time already, and probably my #1 for OST.

Coelacanth,

I’m drunk on recency bias myself but I’m tempted to put him in Uematsu tier myself. I know that sounds outrageous but it’s actually that good. Even the lyrics are absolutely amazing. It will probably end up being my favourite OST of all time.

And there’s 8 fucking hours of it and not a single weak track!?

overload,

I just started the game last night. Holy shit that opening prologue was incredible, and the music did so much for the atmosphere of loss/melancholy.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

It somehow just keeps getting better too. Super strong leitmotif work as well, throughout the game. And like I mentioned, even if you don’t speak french try looking up translations for the lyrics (but after you finished the game). Some really beautiful passages, but steeped in foreshadowing and spoilers.

faercol,
@faercol@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah I’m French, and during the game there are several moments where I’m hearing part of some lyrics where I’m “wait a second, is the music actually spoiling the plot?”

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I wish I hadn’t fumbled my french fluency over the past decade and a half as I still had to go back multiple times and re-listen and read the lyrics to understand them. And also the male singer on the OST sounds like he’s not a native french speaker so that makes it even harder to pick out.

But yeah, maybe it was for the best that I didn’t understand right away in the end!

@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I finished the game already, but the biggest quality of life update is being able to use Soul Pods to dispel illusions so you’re not more or less locked in with Yatzli while exploring in the later Acts. Set your expectations appropriately, and Avowed is a hell of a game, but it’s got more in common with Dark Souls or God of War than it does Fallout: New Vegas or Skyrim.

MyDarkestTimeline01, (edited )

It’s hard to “set your expectations accordingly” when you go from baldur’s gate 3 and Kingdom come Deliverance 2 to this. It makes me wonder what could have been before development was restarted.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Well, playing through the first KC:D now, I can tell you it was rough to go from Avowed’s combat to KC:D’s, but that’s okay, because KC:D has other strengths. When development gets restarted, it’s not because it was shaping up into a better game than what we ended up with.

Plebcouncilman,

I don’t really understand this mentality. Is it a younger gamer thing? I can enjoy games on their own merits without having to compare them with anything else. Besides, the best aspect of Avowed is its gameyness so to speak . It’s just the right length and pick up and play enough that busy people like me can play it and actually finish it. I’ve been meaning to play BG3 but I if I do I have to commit to it for a year at least, and that’s a hard pill to swallow. And I always finish every game I start, especially RPGs.

MyDarkestTimeline01,

Well I’m almost 40 so not a young thing. I also have a pretty packed work week and it’s not a set schedule. The only difference between us is that gaming is my main hobby. I don’t follow any sportsball, and the only other hobbies are things like TTRPGs and building Legos or Gunpla. And it’s pretty common to judge something based on the contemporaries of what it is. You can like something, and my not liking it doesn’t lessen your enjoyment.
