Hey y’all! What have you been playing this week? I played a bunch of the recent Talos principle remake. It was cool! The story hits differently with the way the world is with AI but I still thought it was enjoyable. Now I’m starting up the sequel!
My YouTube feed is filled with nothing but overwhelmingly positive reviews. All I did was watch the trailer a while back, then a review with gameplay from some influencer that got early access....
I’m having a blast with it. It’s a break from the design ethos that was Doom Eternal. So if you’re looking for more Eternal you’ll be disappointed. This one wants you to play significantly more aggressively.
At DICE and GDC this year I heard talk of a trend in game development that sent a chill down my spine: “deprofessionalization.” As A16z marketing partner Ryan K. Rigney defines it, deprofessionalization is a phenomenon driven by the overperformance of older titles (particularly free-to-play live service games), large studios...
This just seems like a more subtle posturing for “games should cost more”. Video game customers are notoriously right with their wallets. The lockdown boom was a fluke, not a new norm.
It’s hard to “set your expectations accordingly” when you go from baldur’s gate 3 and Kingdom come Deliverance 2 to this. It makes me wonder what could have been before development was restarted.
Well I’m almost 40 so not a young thing. I also have a pretty packed work week and it’s not a set schedule. The only difference between us is that gaming is my main hobby. I don’t follow any sportsball, and the only other hobbies are things like TTRPGs and building Legos or Gunpla. And it’s pretty common to judge something based on the contemporaries of what it is. You can like something, and my not liking it doesn’t lessen your enjoyment.
It really is. I remember the music of Doom 2016 and Eternal being something I wanted to listen to even after I stopped playing. The music of D:TDA just…I can’t remember once I turn the game off.
Seems like there’s going to be a point where people are noticing the games they spent money on don’t work as they should anymore because the servers get shut down....
Given the swathes of posts about bad behavior from big companies, I figure we could counterbalance that with some positivity about stuff the smaller guys made that often costs us less too.
I’ve said this elsewhere before but video games are a commodity and an impulse buy. Very few people view the next video game as an essential purchase for themselves. So sure people can have them and haha about how much the cost of developing a video game has gone up till they’re blue in the face but that is not going to change how the consumer will feel at the register buying the game. If the person at the register does not feel that the price is justified they’re not going to pay it they’re going to wait for a sale, borrow it from a friend if they can get access to physical media, or pirate it.
Fact 1: Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox announced this week that it will sell “some” of its upcoming video games for $80 — a hike from the previous standard price of $70, which itself was a hike from $60 just a few years ago. This comes in the wake of Nintendo Co.’s announcement last month that the new Mario Kart game for...

On the one hand it sucks that a writer lost their job. And it’ll never not suck. On the other hand I love when Apex Legends looks bad. I lost Titanfall 3 for that?
On the one hand I don’t want devs to lose their jobs(or anyone really) but there’s a part of me that’s enjoying watching EA have to eat its hands to survive.
Just finished the Front Mission 1 remake and started the Front Mission 2 remake. Found out why it wasn’t as popular. Playing a bit of Space Marine 2, CoD, Warframe when the mood takes me. I also played some more Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, which is like a spiritual sequel to Jet Set Radio Future.
I have to disagree with you on the pricing point. Just because people “understand” that pricing for games has been behind other entertainment doesn’t mean they are willing to stomach that increase. Most people buy video games as an impulse buy from their discretionary funds after bills have been paid. At the price point they are at currently it has stopped being impulse buys. This has led to so.many of the AAA failures of the past two console gens(current and last). When a brand new game costs $60(and gaining) and a weeks worth of groceries cost $100 you don’t think in terms of “will this game be fun” but instead "will this game be worth a weeks worth of groceries. And while this isn’t a problem for indies who are currently eating the lunch of the AAA pubs right in front of their faces, it will crater those legacy studios.
No one with sense is saying that they wouldn’t want to increase prices. The debate is whether or not the publishers who are pushing for higher cost of games realize that the higher it goes the less sales they’re actually going to make. Because again it doesn’t matter if the consumer knows why the cost has gone up or not. It’s a matter of whether or not the cost is going to seem justifiable for the customer. And that’s the rub everyone keeps saying that oh games should cost more game should cost more. The problem with that statement is after a certain price point games are no longer going to be a hobby purchase. They’re no longer going to be that impulse buy that they’ve survived on. They’re going to be that thing where you end up waiting for it to go below $25 or for it to be a runaway smash hit that everyone is telling you is a great game. And that isn’t even to say that good games are always going to cost more money look at Balatro, look at schedule 1, look at Repo. These are games that were made on shoestring budgets that players enjoyed. The problem with ballooning costs isn’t that games are getting bank breakingly expensive to make. It’s that risk averse publishers and investors are chasing trends that players have moved on from and they no longer are made up of people who actually play games.
