I’m not sure if modding can add more races because every single mod I’ve ever seen from Morrowind to Fallout 4 only ever uses the same number of races the vanilla game offers. But it would be a little disappointing for there to only be 1 race (maybe 2 if you count robots) for mods like that.

rockerface, do games w Elden Ring is "the limit" for From Software project scale, says Miyazaki - multiple, "smaller" games may be the "next stage"

Yeah, and SotE was the size of Limgrave

    derbolle,

    (stacked 6 times)

    Wootz,

The verticality is absolutely the best part. My biggest gripe with Elden Rings world is that it’s an “open world” game in kind of the same way Ubi games are. Traversal is largely trivial, so you stop paying attention to the map after you’ve reached major areas.

In my opinion, Dark Souls I is also an open world game, but instead of a 2D map all the zones are tangled up together in a confusing but interesting web.

Shadow of the Erdtree brought some of that back by having zones stacked on top of each other to a much heavier degree than the base game, while also segmenting off geographically close regions.

I wanted to be a level designer for a lot of years, so this is admittedly a bit of a soft spot for me, but I absolutely loved having the game world come at you as as a challenge, almost a character to be fought and bested, outside the legacy dungeons.

    rockerface,

Agree, it felt so satisfying reaching an area and realising “hey, I saw this spot from afar in the beginning of the game - and now I’m here”

    rockerface,

Yep. What I’m saying is Fromsoft like to underpromise and overdeliver, which is a breath of fresh air compared to most other AAA studios and overall very based.

Wow, pretty radical, but what a cool move. I’m sure it’ll be a good thing for the fans of the games and universe in the long run.

    pjhenry1216,

It's a shame that it's even considered "radical" since it's basically a copyright holder upholding their end of the bargain in the promise behind the origin of copyright. To incentivize creative content, a creator is given sole ability to monetize it for a fixed period of time. In return for that protection, the public gets it at the end of the term. Today's copyright is so far off course that it defeats the intent. There's no incentive to create anything new if you can keep milking existing content. And the public never gets a return for offering that protection.

DdCno1, do gaming w Ancient Chinese RPG The Bustling World is, in fact, all of the genres, from city builder to life sim

Scope creep: The game. Trailers do look marvelous, but one has to question how realistic it is that all of these complex systems not only work well on their own, but also manage to form a coherent whole. This could become a trendsetting Indie darling - or more realistically end up as a highly flawed niche title that only manages to find a few dedicated fans that are willing to overlook its issues (if it ever releases).

The developers are entirely unknown - possibly unproven - and the publisher’s only successful games on Steam are an RPG (Tale of Immortal) with just over 50% positive reviews that doesn’t even work if you don’t have your system set to Chinese, an action tower defense game (Outpost: Infinity Siege) with a OpenCritic average of 58 and a 2.5D Cyberpunk RPG (ANNO: Mutationem) that is probably their highest-rated title with an OpenCritic average of 74 and 80% positive reviews.

Before I sound too negative, I hope this title succeeds. I would definitely play it a lot if it manages to deliver on even half of its promises. Art style, perspective and setting remind me of the last classic city builder Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom, building mechanics are reminiscent of various Minecraft-adjacent titles and the multi-genre concept isn’t too dissimilar to The Guild series. All of this is very exciting, but this is exactly the kind of ambition, possibly overambition, that tends to kill studios.

    Malgas,

Tale of Immortal […] doesn’t even work if you don’t have your system set to Chinese

I’ve played it (in English, on a US-English Windows install) and I don’t remember having to do anything like that.

    DdCno1,

Thanks for the correction. I was going by Steam reviews.

What are your thoughts on the game?

    Malgas,

I had fun with it. Can be a bit slow and grindy, as forming a build involves finding the right (randomly generated, periodically refreshed) techniques and studying them. And there’s a big power jump in each area so this process has to be repeated regularly.

I initially got into it when looking for something like Wandering Sword, but as a M&B- or Kenshi-style open world, which it’s not exactly that.

    DdCno1,

Alright, thanks. Did you find any other game that manged to scratch this particular itch?

    Malgas,

    I haven’t.

The Matchless Kungfu certainly looks like Wuxia Kenshi, but I haven’t actually gotten around to trying it.

    DdCno1,

Interesting title. It kind of reminds me a little of Overgrowth, but I’m sure you’ve heard of that one already.

Samdell, do gaming w Valve must address swastikas and other hate on Steam, writes US senator in a letter to Gabe Newell
    @Samdell@lemmynsfw.com avatar

Steam has had, for a long time already, a massive far-right community. Browse its communities and you’ll see the most deranged racist, transphobic, homophobic posters. The entire SweetBaby harassment campaign started - and as far as I know, is still going - thanks to a huge Steam curator, and there are even more “Anti-Woke” groups explicitly dedicated to harassing minorities. Last year, Hogwarts Legacy had a intense campaign and won the Best Game on Steam Deck award due to the brigading of these “anti-woke” fans - and you most likely can still look into its community to witness their efforts - and there are still those on the Tabletop Simulator communities that are outspoken about the devs “bending the knee” by removing global chat from their game in an effort to reduce harassment against queer people.

Basically, its a cesspool of the worst gaming has to offer, but none of this affects Valve’s bottom line, who continues their usual business practice: Don’t interfere and do the minimum amount of work. Is it illegal? Perhaps not. But their inaction makes it clear that this is a safe spot for hateful conduct.

    TachyonTele,

I made the mistake of looking at the Spider-Man discussion board. The entire first page, minus like three posts, was all idiots complaining about pride flags.

    averyminya,

Sadly it’s like that for pretty much any game.

On the bright side, a lot of them are bots just trying to influence real people. Unfortunately, it is people who made these bots who probably do have that hatred. And of course, not all of them are bots…

Remember to check the discussion board posts themselves (each comment), if there is a mouse icon, it means they own/play the game. If there is no mouse icon, they do not.

With this in mind, you’ll notice the bot propaganda posts 90% of the time have not played nor own the game. At least on Steam, they may have pirated the game to play it, then decided to post on discussion boards about how empathy and recognizing of othe- sorry, “wokeness” is killing gaming.

It’s so stupid how hatred stifles discussion. Ironically hating the things just makes them focus on it more.

    TachyonTele,

My favorite is when people ask “Is this game dead?” and it’s a five year old single player game. What are you thinking?

    Midnitte,

Also have noticed the “anti-woke” “curator”.

It’s simply amazing. Imagine not buying a game because the protagonist is a woman. If you don’t want to play Control, you’re missing out.
