Shialac, do games w Cyberpunk's storytelling makes Starfield seem ancient

well, yeah. It’s a Bethesda game, of course their storytelling is bland af

Xanthrax,
@Xanthrax@lemmy.world avatar

I know everyone says it, but FUCK they should let Obsidian do the writing, and they need to drop that ancient game engine. Microsoft has probably killed this company.

Fallout: New Vegas had some of their best story telling. The Outer Worlds had awesome lore too. I’m really surprised they didn’t bring them along.

Whirlybird, do games w Xbox Series X/S players feel forgotten by Rockstar after Red Dead Redemption 60fps PS5 port

Not sure why some people are blaming Microsoft for this, they’ve got nothing to do with it. Their amazing backwards compatibility allowed people to play RDR on their consoles for years at 4K already, but rockstar are the ones that chose to not release the port on Xbox.

superpants, do games w Microsoft expected to finally buy Activision Blizzard next week

Getting rid of Bobby Kotic would be priority number one if you ask me.

Phegan,

The problem is, even if they get rid of bobby kotick, he still wins. He is going to walk a way with millions of dollars in a separation agreement.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Let me dream of some clause in this contract which he breached and no one dared point it out. Ruined reputation or something.

regbin_,

Why do you want OW1 back?

superpants,

Because I paid for it

regbin_,

I paid for Overwatch too but tbh I’d rather have Overwatch 2. There’s no loot box bullcrap and the playerbase now is actually pretty sizeable now compared to OW1 near the end.

I do miss the free rewards but they’re just cosmetics. A bigger playerbase is more beneficial to the game than more free skins.

Starfield is the first and only Bethesda game I haven’t really liked. It’s got all the same gameplay elements, but it’s lacking the world building and interesting stories. The lore is bland as fuck, barely scratches the surface of what you’d want to know, and none of the stories really lean into actually telling you about the world in a fun way, opting instead to give big blocks of dialogue that are nothing but history and exposition. Where is the environmental story-telling they’ve always had? Is the blandness of the world simply a matter of it being new and young and not having nearly as much history as Elder Scrolls and Fallout to build on? Have they simply lost their touch? Believe me, I have tried to like this game. I am a huge fan of space stuff and Bethesda games, but it just doesn’t have that certain something that makes their games actually fun.

Cethin,

It’s really strange. The area under the main NC city was pretty good. It had character. Locations felt like they belonged and not just stuck there because they needed something there. It tells you a story about the people who live there. It’s literally the only place in the game that does this that I’ve seen. I don’t understand how so much went wrong with Starfield.

KeenFlame,

Hint: the previous games weren’t exactly amazing at this either. Worse, in many areas. It’s quite rose tinted from nostalgia

Regardless of the quality of the writing, they certainly had more interesting ideas in their lore and settings that added something to the experience. That’s what Starfield is lacking.

HuntressHimbo, do games w Cancelled loot shooter Hyenas allegedly "Sega's biggest budget game ever", new report claims
@HuntressHimbo@lemm.ee avatar

As a fan of total war warhammer this is so sad but also so cathartic. Its sad that this is how CA and Sega executives treated their employees and their IPs, but cathartic because it proves that the community was right and we were being gaslit. Pour one out for the community managers who the execs used as disposable flak vests for all their shitty decisions.

Didn’t these chucklefucks just charge over a 100 bucks for all the content in their TMNT collab? Super fuck that guy.

Oneeightnine, do games w Game prices are too low, says Capcom exec

“Man who stands to gain from an increase in game prices advocates for increase in game prices”.

Seriously though I’m not sure there’s much more room to go on the top end when it comes to prices rises. I’ve got to think at some point you’ll just push more people into buying at sale, or waiting for a game to hit their subscription platform of choice.

Maybe it’s time we re-evaluate what makes a AAA worth £75 in the first place? And, what role do micro transactions have in this system, because anyone who’s ever spent £75 on a new AAA game will know there’s plenty of other ways they try to skin the proverbial cat.

narrowide96lochkreis, do games w Embracer Group layoffs hit Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics

The title is wrong. That click bait title makes it sound like the studio is done and won’t continue developing games.

The reality from the article: “Crystal Dyanmics made the difficult decision to part ways with nine brand/marketing and one IT employee today due to an internal restructuring to align the studio with our current business needs,” it wrote. “We are working directly with the affected staff to support them.”

Sucks for them, but none of the developers are currently affected.

MentalEdge,

Marketing? If it was any of the same people that did TR marketing when they were with square enix, good riddance.

stormesp,

The title is correct, the title doesnt say its closing the studio, it says that at the developer Crystal Dynamics there are layoffs. it doesnt say that what you consider developers inside the developer Crystal Dynamics are being laid off.

melonpunk, do games w E3 2024 in doubt, as organiser exits and location abandoned
@melonpunk@lemmy.world avatar

It’s already dead, please leave the corpse alone.

It is kinda sad given the legacy of the show, it almost made it to 30 and was the place of so many big industry moments (good and bad). Things have become more spread out now across GamesCom, PAXs, TGS, GDC, Develop and the many I’m forgetting.

I can get the argument that we really don’t need much of an in-person event given that stuff can be streamed instantly around the world now, we don’t need to rely on people setting up cameras in front of TVs to show off noisy gameplay footage, but the fact that so many others shows still exist proves that there is a want for in-person events.

E3’s death kinda came about because it got chipped away from all sides. There were better places for industry deal making to be done (GDC), Big publishers peeled off to do their own thing, and the expensive mark up that hit the other companies no longer appealed as they could get what they needed from PAX and GamesCom.

GreenMario, do games w Peter Molyneux says he regrets over-promising his games

Ironic. If he could stay away from interviews and just let someone else PR for him he’d be remembered as a legend of the gaming industry. Bullfrog and Lionhead put out quite a lot of bangers for their time.

But he does like talking too much. Shame.

war, do games w Peter Molyneux says he regrets over-promising his games
@war@kbin.social avatar

The guy has been a con artist for decades, and he hasn't made a playable game since the 1990s. He also hasn't "over-promised his games", as the title of the article so cutely claims. Rather, he has lied through his fucking teeth to steal money from people, over and over and over again, and lied some more to steal more money, and lied some more, and lied some more. I'm sick to death of these pathetic redemption pieces for this no-talent loser. He's a thief and a liar, nothing more. He's not a genius. He's not a creative maelstrom that needs to be reined in. He's just a fucking liar and a thief, same as Elon Musk, same as everyone else who has tried to sell this particular brand of con artistry over the years.

quinnly,

I’m always one for dramatic over-exaggeration but the Fable games are perfectly playable

vaultdweller013,

They are not perfectly balanced as all things must be.

rmuk,

Can’t wait for the new Fable. My loins are girded in anticipation, or something.

Elderos,

I mean, you can blame him for a lot of stuff but he designed quite a few iconic games. Most game designers will spend a lifetime and not achieve just what molineux achieved in the 90s.
