Hey.

I’m Dan. A 35 year old father of two who doesn’t have nearly as much time as he needs to do half the things he wishes he had the time to do.

I’ve heard absolutely nothing about this and I’m not sure how I feel about that.

On the one hand maybe the reviews are going to blow me away and it becomes a day one buy… on the other I’m getting a little worried that it’s being sent out to die.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Didn’t they only just reform after previously being laid off?

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Lies of P. It’s probably going to end up as my game of the year.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

“Man who stands to gain from an increase in game prices advocates for increase in game prices”.

Seriously though I’m not sure there’s much more room to go on the top end when it comes to prices rises. I’ve got to think at some point you’ll just push more people into buying at sale, or waiting for a game to hit their subscription platform of choice.

Maybe it’s time we re-evaluate what makes a AAA worth £75 in the first place? And, what role do micro transactions have in this system, because anyone who’s ever spent £75 on a new AAA game will know there’s plenty of other ways they try to skin the proverbial cat.

Leaked Microsoft Documents Show the Xbox Series S Might Be More Popular Than You Think - IGN (www.ign.com)

Since its release in 2020, the Xbox Series S has been the subject of debate over its value within the current hardware generation lineup due to being less powerful than the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. It turns out, Microsoft's $300 Series S is more popular than the Series X....

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Is anyone surprised? I thought it was common knowledge that the S outsold the X by a pretty sizable margin?

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Microsoft pushing it as the affordable next-gen console didn’t hurt. I’m not sure how that decision will play out going forward for Microsoft, but it’s been a pretty effective strategy so far.

Oneeightnine,

Really excited for Cocoon. It’s from one of the people that made Inside and Limbo. And I guess this will give me a chance to test Gotham Knights.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

That’s fine. I still feel like we’re not getting nearly as much out of these machines as we could be, another few years without having to worry about stumping out £500 will be nice.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Having a lot of fun with it, but I’m not really that nostalgic for F-Zero, despite playing a fair bit of it back in the day.

Now give me a Super Mario Kart version of this sort of thing and I’ll be totally sold.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I absolutely love your description of the game being ‘big empty rooms’. I think I’ve come to the same conclusion in the last 24 hours. The space stuff and the on-planet stuff feels disjointed and unconnected. The way you traverse the universe is incredibly underwhelming (so many menu’s) and the actual game design just feels so 2008.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Mostly waiting for Lies Of P to land in a day or two. I have spent more time with Starfield, but as I mentioned in a previous comment, I think I’m reaching the end of my time with that one.

I don’t think it’s ‘bad’, but I do think it’s a severely compromised game that underwhelms more than it should for a game of it’s budget and the team behind it. There’s moments where you can see so much potential but it is always somewhat hidden by this mid 2000s design that I thought we’d moved past.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Absolutely none of that makes any sense to me. What does it (likely) mean for the people who are going to be buying one of these?

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I’ll probably play a little Starfield, and maybe Rocket League with my brother. Other than that I’m patiently waiting for Lies Of P to hit Gamepass on Tuesday.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I think (for me atleast) the larger issue is the fact that I have to engage a cut-scene to land on a planet. I don’t have an issue with a loading screen in order to get into the system, or even just outside of the planets atmosphere, but it’s kinda weak that I also have a loading screen when landing.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

How does that thing run?

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Good to hear. I’ve already finished ZD on the PS4 but it’s nice to know the Deck can handle that sort of thing.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Valve’s doesn’t help with it’s ‘Verified’ status. I picked up Dead Space because it’s verified. Within an hour I’d hit the refund button. It ran. It ran at 20fps and looked like absolute ass, but it ran. Not sure that’s what they should be pushing people towards however.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I guess they’re wanting to show that it can handle the very biggest games? Problem is if people can’t trust the verification process then it’s effectively useless. After my Dead Space issue I’ve already made it standard practise to check ProtonDB before I grab a game.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I’m honestly amazed that anyone could have completed it more than once already. I’ve played it every day since Friday and I feel like I’ve barely got out of the opening seconds of the game.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Man, Q3 2024 is gonna be Xbox’s to own…

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

The Stanley Parable, although it couldn’t be further from High on Life in terms of its comedy. Personally I don’t love the game but it’s absolutely hilarious.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I mean yeah, it’s absolutely that.

List of specific video game communities on the Threadiverse, feel free to comment with more (kbin.cafe)

When I mean “specific,” I mean things like something dedicated to a certain genre, a certain video game, to gaming suggestions, to asking whether you should buy a certain game… anything that isn’t just one catch-all for any video gaming topic. So I’m not including the various !games@instance or !gaming@instance links....

I run both !currentlyplaying and !photomode

Currently Playing is a place to discuss what you’re currently playing and Photo-Mode is a place to share in game screenshots and photographs you’ve taken whilst playing.

Sorry if the links are messed up. I’ve got no idea the right way to link at this point. The whole system seems a bit of a mess.

What the heck does “graphics comparable” mean?

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

It’s just such a nebulous turn of phrase that could mean absolutely anything to anyone you ask.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Can’t remember the source (possibly Jeff Gerstman at Giantbomb) but I’m absolutely certain they said this was a tax write-off or something.

Trine 5 and En Garde!. Both on 'Deck.

Trine 5 is more of the same, which is good as I’m pretty fond of their take on ‘the same’ and En Garde! Is a delightful little game that combines Sekiro’s combat and Fables charm.

Oneeightnine,

Very happy this month.

I’ll give Starfield a look, although I’m not usually a Bethesda guy.

Lies of P is where it’s at for me. I’ve been eyeing that one up for months and the fact that it’s day 1 on Gamepass is huge for me.

As for Solar Ash. I played Hyper Light Drifter over the Christmas period last year and fell in love with it. I’ve been waiting for Ash to go on sale on the PS5, but I guess my waiting is over eh?

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Another way to look at it is to say that if it comes out and gets absolutely killed then you’ll likely never see a sequel, regardless of how good a game it is. Look at Titanfall 2.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

This is less of a confirmation and more of a ‘yeah, at some point there will exist a RDR3’.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Am I alone in not remembering literally any enemy in Mass Effect 3?

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I didn’t think I needed more 2D Mario until I saw this. I basically skipped over the entire New Super Mario line and whilst I did fall in love with Mario Maker 2 I thought it was a phase I’d gone through.

Speaking of Mario Maker. I wonder how much inspiration the development team took from those games when coming up with Wonders more… experimental levels.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

AHH the old “we’ll see how well this does before we greenlight an actual sequel”

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I think these games are pretty good fun. And I hear the co-op ain’t too bad either.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Trying not to commit to anything too strenious with Lies of P and Starfield on the horizon, but I have found the time to start two games over the last few days. Those games are:

XCOM: Chimera Squad

It’s an XCOM game. I’ll probably play a it until I inevitably make a mess of the base management stuff and find my city in ruins, you know, like every other XCOM game that’s come out over the last decade.

The Life And Sufferings of Sir Brante

I started this today and I’m kind of blown away by it in all honesty. It’s a story heavy RPG where you play the role a child born into a semi-noble family. During the game you’ll do an awful lot of reading and then make decisions and judgements based on the character your playing. I’m maybe 2 hours in so far and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever played.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

The game has co-op???

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I’m not a massive Bethesda fan, but I’ve absolutely got the preload done on my series X. Gamepass is perfect for that sort of thing.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

IIRC didn’t Microsoft hold the game back specifically to ensure it didn’t launch in a horrific state? Bethesda games are known for being a nightmare at launch, and even with these assurances, I’m still expecting the first few weeks to be a mess. That being said, if any Bethesda game was going to launch well, it would be this one.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I’d be very surprised if that Metroid Prime game doesn’t feature in their launch plans.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Lies of P comes out a month before this. Looks like I’ve got a busy few weeks.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Abzu has a few moments like that, especially towards the end where you’re swimming through more and more densely packed environments.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

I feel like they’ve been saying something to the effect that 'the games are coming ’ for a good while now, and either they don’t turn up or land in such a way that people immediately forget about them.

Oneeightnine,
!deleted4231 avatar

Love me a Trine game, I just wish it wasn’t coming out right now. I’ve got Starfield and PinocchioSouls on the horizon.
