I thought both games were excellent, but yes there was definitely something about BOTW that set it apart. In addition to what you’ve said, I think it’s partially that BOTW was such a unique experience the first time through - little things like the stamina meter for climbing, the cooking to help you craft items that warm you up etc. Discovering these features and setting off in whichever direction you fancied was a joy. TOTK didn’t have this same joy, as I already knew about these mechanics. And it felt like there was much more of a push to get the player to go in a specific direction, rather than leaving the exploration up to them.

I reckon they probably did the best job they could’ve with a sequel, but it was never going to be possible to live up to BOTW.

I just wanted to say, thank you! I’ve missed this kind of info after moving away from Reddit. This is absolutely wonderful, and I will look forward to any more you post, though I fully understand if you get busy or lose interest. Thank you!!!

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for saying so!

I used to share these so very often on Reddit, esp on my own sub-reddit there…and it’s honestly the one thing I missed about being there. I’m very glad I remembered about Lemmy and re-joined here, because it’s been so much fun finding a (mostly) willing audience for this kind of post again!

I’m trying to force myself to write these only one per week, but so far the majority were only 3 or 4 days between each. I’m sticking around :)

linkybunny,

Well then I will be keeping an eye out. These will give me some news I can read without fear of flood of negative or depressing news. Thank you again!

ChexMax, do games w What are some old games that are hard to revisit, because a more modern and superior version exists?

I was going to comment harvest moon after reading the title!

A lot of the older games for me. They’re just a lot harder. Like maybe they expect you to be willing to replay an area or a level over and over, getting a little farther each time until you beat it and I just don’t have the stamina for that anymore, or the time.

Newer games baby you, they increase the difficultly perfectly along side your ability growth. They might even make a level easier if you’ve failed twice. Older games don’t care if you’re having fun as much. There was less competition (fewer game choices) and more of a “gamers like this. If you don’t like it, you’re not a gamer” attitude, and now games want to attract everyone.

I have become such a baby about games. I want to have fun the whole time! I can’t handle failing over and over. I’d rather just read a book.

Echolynx,

Same, this is how I got frustrated by Hades. I no longer have endless time to sink into a game to get good.

Potatar,

The “story” of Hades is that the guy you control gets better over time and finally escapes. How else can you convey it? With text (cardinal sin)?

zalgotext,

I don’t think anyone is saying that the story of Hades isn’t portrayed well with the rougelike style, but it’s totally ok to say “I don’t have time to play a game that’s designed such that you fail dozens of times before you win”

Lost_My_Mind, do games w What are some old games that are hard to revisit, because a more modern and superior version exists?

Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Now you got Rock, Paper, Scissors, Stapler, Banana, Atomic Bomb, Literature, Handcuffs, Police Brutality, Spock, Tweezers, Howling Dog.

And really, who would ever expect you to pick Tweezers? But it doesn’t lose to much, so it’s actually a great pick to twist your friends nipples. Unless they start EXPECTING you to twist their nipples, so they pick Atomic Bomb, and blow up all of civilization in a 30 mile radius.

I haven’t been on Space Station 13 since Space Station 14 came out. The controls are just actually intuitive and BYOND is dead in the water.

Sanctus,

Yeah its disconnected from BYOND. I think you can launch it standalone but it also comes through Steam (always free). It was pretty bare bones but now its catching up. Looks easier to maintain and mod on the back end.

CatLikeLemming, do games w Half Life: Alyx is Five Years Old Today
@CatLikeLemming@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Somewhat hot take… I’d argue Boneworks (not Bonelab) was “better”, at least if you’re used to VR and if you judge by freedom and replay value. Don’t get me wrong, playing through Half Life Alyx was fun and engaging, but to me it had little to no replay value, since for all it did great in visuals, audio, accessibility, and especially story, it failed dramatically in physics. Since I played Alyx right after Boneworks, I kept trying to pick stuff up which I ended up not being able to for larger objects, and the first time I tried to knock a Combine over the head with a pipe I was so sorely disappointed. Alyx has absolutely everything Boneworks is missing, yet that physics core is what kept me coming back to the latter. It really clicked for me when I noticed how many things in Boneworks one can solve in alternate ways by “abusing” physics. Climbing is a learned skill and combat can be as much shooting as it can be using knives, fists, shoving someone off a ledge, or grabbing an enemy and throwing it at others. It’s what truly made me realize how much potential VR had, being able to interact with a full physics simulation, where even your own body is a physics object, with your physical hands is amazing.

Psythik,

I feel like most people who sing praises for Alyx only do so because it was their first VR game. (a lot of people bought a headset just for it.) It’s decent game, but without VR it’s nothing special.

Sucks that VR is still a niche product, despite it being an obtainable consumer product for almost a decade now (edit: and affordable for over half a decade now). When the OG Rift and Vive first dropped, I imagined it being as popular as traditional gaming within 5 years. Yet here we are 9 years later and we still don’t have epic, 50+ hour AAA experiences in VR because hardly anyone owns a headset. Every VR game feels like an indie title.

FFXIV, but this doesn’t mean much because it’s dependent on what genres you like.

Most historically significant? Ultima 4, Wizardry 1, Pool of Radiance, Mario 1, Metroid 1, FF4, Chrono Trigger, FF7, Mario 64, Zelda OoT, Counterstrike, Starcraft, Diablo 1, WoW, Cave Story, World of Goo, Minecraft, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Zelda BotW

Verito,

That list is old school solid. I played every one of those except M64 and Counterstrike. Add a few like Adventure, Rogue, Civ 1&2, Populous, Wing Commander, Star Control 2, King’s Quest, Sim City, Katamari Damacy, and Deus Ex. Every one of those titles changed gaming in new ways.

I would lo to be able to justify buying a 1500€ vr set. But using it for one or two games does not make the threshold for me.

I hope they make more really good games so it become justifiable.

mr2meows,
@mr2meows@pawb.social avatar

you can get a used rift cv1 or a vive for around 200 USD

WolfLink,

Here’s a list of VR games I’d 1000% recommend:

  • Half Life: Alyx
  • I Expect you to Die (James Bond themed virtual escape rooms - 3 games in the series so far, all of them are good)
  • Super Hot (slo-motion first person combat puzzle game)
  • Beat Saber (a unique rhythm game)
  • Pavlov (CS:GO but in VR with extensive modding support)

There are other good ones out there but that’s the list that justifies the headset to me.

Also there are some good VR ports of non-VR games out there such as Myst and The Talos Principle. Also there are some good Minecraft mods that add VR support (Java edition of course). Stay away from the Skyrim port though.

DoucheBagMcSwag,

Vertigo 2

Rai,

The Skyrim port is amazing! …with 100 mods.

Lv_InSaNe_vL,
  • the walking dead games
  • Walkabout VR (putt-putt game)
  • Dungeons of Eternity (quest exclusive)
  • Any flight/racing sim (this is actually the biggest selling point I can make. Seriously if you like flight/racing sims, please get one. It’ll change your life)
  • No Man’s Sky (one of my demo games)
PhAzE,

What? Quest 2 is like $250 and it connects to your PC and works just fine for Alyx.

Smokeless7048,

Get a Quest 3 for like $400 CAD, incredible for its price.

Psythik,

Dude, VR has been affordable for over half a decade now. Get with the times.

Blackmist,

The headsets have (if you can stomach Meta). Thanks to the combines efforts of Nvidia, scalpers, crypto-bros and AI-nerds, the hardware cost has been sailing into the distance and shows no sign of stopping.
