gegil, do games w A game you "didn't know it was bad 'til people told you so"?

For me it was war thunder. Seen this game advertised on youtube a while ago, and about year ago i decided to just install it and see what this game is. Firstly i liked it. It was fun game to play. After some time of playing this game, i wanted to see videos of this game on youtube, and thats where i found a lot of criticizm for this game. Only after hitting about 60 hours of total playtime, i started understanding the hate for this game myself. I did not played war thunder ever since. For context, the main reason for hate to this game is that it is too grindy, and it will take hundreds of hours to reach top tier, even with premium account.

Saleh,

I remember having a lot of fun in the first two or three tiers of war thunder. But then the higher tiers hit, everything gets way too fast and you have to deal with too many sweaters.

RisingSwell,

Can confirm, several hundred hours in and I have like, 3 usable jets with missiles. And I deliberately rushed the shortest tech line to get them faster. And Im basically permanent premium.

How the fuck is a free player meant to do it

augustus672,

That’s the neat part, you aren’t! Gaijin 100% expects you to pay to get to top tier.

frenchfryenjoyer,
@frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world avatar

it’s very pay to win. it feels good to play at first then your progress stagnates to the point of frustration and paying players get put in the same matches as non paying players. paying players get access to entirely new planes and upgrades and they always kill me soon after i spawn.

Lv_InSaNe_vL,

I just wish they would fix bombers somehow. I wish I could fly my B-17 or B-29 and actually drop bombs.

All I want is high altitude carpet bombing, I know everyone else thinks it’s boring but it’s what I want 😭

AlexanderTheDead, do games w PC Gaming’s Mascot Squad—who makes the cut?

As a pc gamer, I disagree with the premise. PC gaming doesn’t have a mascot squad because PC Gaming isn’t a monolith, whereas Nintendo (or Xbox or Playstation) is.

You want THE PC gaming mascot? It’s Steve from Minecraft. No other character, not even Doom Guy, comes even remotely close.

    Coelacanth, do games w Blue Prince - Have you played it? How blown is your mind?
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

    I played it obsessively for a solid month or so following its release. One of the best puzzle games ever and still a GOTY contender for me.

    I know some people didn’t like the RNG, but for me it never became a real big problem. You get some control over the randomness eventually, and I also just found the drafting part of the game enjoyable in itself.

    Piecing together the story and the world building bit by bit and uncovering the mystery was also super enjoyable. It’s one of the most rewarding games ever for note-takers. So much so that keeping physical notes in a journal was like half my enjoyment.

    SilverShark,

    I did find a few ways to control the randomness, but I’m wondering if there are many more? I basically got:

    spoilerThe Coat Check where you can leave an item, and I think the well at the entrance of the mansion where you can drop a coin per day which increases your… luck or something?

    Coelacanth,
    @Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

    There are several more. Some examples (light spoilers):

    spoilerPick any room upgrades that give you extra dice. There are also two items that let you reroll, though they aren’t the easiest to acquire (but can be Coat Checked!). I also recommend looking into the Sheet Music puzzle.

    There are some other ways to reroll or affect RNG, but I don’t know how to hint at them without spoiling too much.

    SilverShark,

    spoilerOh I think I’ve seen something about sheet music but have no idea about. The dice and such are indeed practical.

    Thanks!

    grrgyle,

    CaptPretentious, do gaming w Let us cry together

    I remember those prices. I was there, when we went past a dollar and the gas station attendant was pissed saying, “we’ll never see it under a dollar ever again”, and he was right.

    MolecularCactus1324,

    I remember when it went past $2 because I worked at a gas station at the time and all the patrons were pissed. This was before pay at the pump, so people would come in to the register and pay cash mostly. They would also bitch and moan. Yeah - sorry it isn’t my fault. I was making minimum wage and had my first car. I wasn’t too happy either.

    surewhynotlem,

    Minimum wage? I bet it was stupidly low back then. Probably like $7.25

    rdri, do games w I'm a console gamer so, Why the hate on the Epic Games Store?

    another player to try an compete with Steam

    Here is the mistake. It does not trying to compete. It only tries to catch as many fish in its bucket as possible, while leveraging (burning) Fortnite money.

    It’s a wasted effort, and it will never come close to Steam like this. It may even die along with Fortnite, or degrade further.

    ITT: Epic is awful, Steam is great!

    Me: Is GOG a joke to you people???

    MolochAlter, (edited )

    Kinda, unfortunately.

    It was great when it had its niche, and I still buy games there occasionally, but it has poorer integration with pretty much anything, Galaxy is bloated as hell, and it has explicitly no linux/deck support.

    Eta: apparently GOG actively funds Heroic launcher, didn’t know that, thanks for pointing it out to me.

    MudMan,

    So I learned recently that GOG actively funds Heroic. Which really takes some weight off of Heroic's support for GOG game autopatching and cloud saves, meaning it may be a bit hacky and officially in "beta", but it's very unlikely for GOG to object to its presence.

    They may not "officially" support Linux, but they don't "explicitly" lack support.

    Also, tip of the hat to Heroic, it works extremely well and very reliably. I was frustrated with Lutris and I am bummed out by how Galaxy didn't quite get there as the one universal support launcher to handle all your libraries, but Heroic is good enough as a replacement I don't mind nearly as much anymore. Even on Windows I'd consider it over Galaxy.

    MolochAlter,

    Oh, that’s actually nice to hear, makes me re-evaluate gog somewhat.

    I don’t use heroic much but it’s never too late to start.

    MudMan,

    Yep. As I understand it it's via affiliate links, so if you buy GOG games through the storefront in the Heroic UI they get a small cut, but the Heroic devs say they have spoken to GOG reps and they are broadly supportive, so unless that changes I don't think their ability to support GOG features would be compromised any time soon.

    Me too. I feel gross giving Nintendo money, but at least I split a family plan with a bunch of friends

    caseyweederman,

    And a JPN N64 to play import games without having to drill out the region lock blocks!

    RightHandOfIkaros,

    Well yes, if you are paying Nintendo to rent games you already own physical copies of.

    wheeldawg,

    You would’ve been more correct to just stop after “paying Nintendo”. Giving them money is bad, period.

    Let them fade into obsolescence.

    I’ll stay on Switch 1 and steam deck until there is a significant drop.

    The Switch never went down in price after 8 years and neither did the games. I don’t think that’s happening until Nintendo makes a console that can’t run Switch 2 games.

  • samus12345,

    That’s true.

    wheeldawg,

    It is a really simple mod to make. Any modder could do it, most likely, using original controllers even- the only thing stopping it is Nintendo themselves and their copyright. Using a 2.4ghz connection would be much better than Bluetooth as well. That’s something Nintendo would have to implement into the console most likely, although I can see that being doable.

    Plus, their controllers are only really “good” for nostalgia reasons. They’ve been improved on in every way by others.

    IMO they haven’t done anything good for the industry at all lately. I’m not saying the other consoles have either, I think they’re all shit. Mainly because of exclusives. Fuck that entire concept at it’s very core.

    Hardware exclusives, OS exclusives, etc are all bad.

    Nintendo is going the extra shitty mile with the way they handle copyright in particular, but the entire console industry is corrupt.

    If there is a machine with enough computing power to run a piece of software, it should be able to do it, period. That is the technological ideal that should be aimed at. Not the “how much can I charge for the ability to play this game” idea.

    RightHandOfIkaros,

    I agree with you, but I also recognize that saying that to someone that clearly enjoys Nintendo products would be incredibly mean. So while I also imagine what I said could be seen as mean, it is far less mean IMO than just blanket dropping the entire company.

    Like, I used to love Nintendo. But when Iwata died and Fils-Aime left NoA, Nintendo changed for the absolute worst. I could not hate Nintendo more, actually. Still, I try to not be super mean to most people that like Nintendo products.

    samus12345,

    I feel the same way - I absolutely loathe current Nintendo’s business practices, but I can’t deny they make fantastic games. So if someone can afford their premium prices, more power to them. I’ll be interested to see how Nintendo does this gen since they’re pricing out the casual market that’s made them successful in the past.

    wheeldawg,

    Not sure how that’s mean.

    If I said “you’re a stupid idiot to give them money” then sure. Saying it’s a bad idea isn’t mean.

    Durandal, do games w What is your favorite indie game?
    @Durandal@lemmy.today avatar

    Pushing the definition but I started when it was still in beta… Minecraft has gotten hundreds and hundreds of hours put into it.

    Terarria and Starbound are both really good and scratch that same itch as Minecraft. Core Keeper is another one that has some of that feel and I ended up really enjoying.

    Surprised I haven’t seen it mentioned but Cave Story was made by one guy doing everything… and everything in it is immaculate. It’s still free for the original version as well.

    Stardew Valley is awesome and restarted a genre.

    Crypt of the Necrodancer is awesome, and well worth checking out… also goes on sale really cheap.

    Pacific Drive is a fun one to check out. If you’re from the PNW, it will hit even more.

    Really enjoyed Stray. Worth grabbing on a sale.

    OwlBoy was a delightful game with a lot of character.

    Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was a really nice return to form if you like IgaVanias.

    If you like roguelites then you owe it to yourself to check out Enter the Gungeon (isometric) as well as RoboQuest (fps).

    If you want a game that’s beautiful, with emergent story and is hard af… definitely check out Rain World.

    Is Black Mesa still considered indie? It’s how I would recommend anyone play Half-Life 1 these days.

    Rusty’s Retirement… isn’t so much a game… sorta… but yeah… check that out.

    Elevator7009,

    I enjoyed Rusty’s Retirement, glad to see someone else has played it. (I do count idlers as games.) Cute little desktop idle/incremental game.

    Obra Dinn

    Maestro,

    I loved Obra Dinn. If you like that you will probably also like "Case of the Golden Idol" and it's successor.

    dvallej,

    I tired it and it didn’t hit the same way for me

    taiyang, do games w What are some good examples of "Where the fuck do you go" kind of games?

    You want the absolute “guide damn it” example? Try playing the OG Dragon Quest games. They’re nonlinear by nature and there’s a spot in 2 (or was it 3) where you need to literally check an unmarked floor for an item. No indicator, save maybe a vague NPC dialogue in another part of the planet that didn’t get adequately translated in English so you’re truly aimless.

    ieatpwns,

    It’s in 1 where you find the item to avoid swamp damage

    caseyweederman,

    It’s a secret to everyone!

    taiyang,

    Reminds me that Nintendo had help lines you could call for stuff like Zelda secrets, and they may have intentionally added things like secret caves to incentivize that lucrative service.

    Wahots, do games w Cities Skylines 2, Kerbal Space 2, Planet Coaster 2, Frostpunk 2... What Went Wrong?
    @Wahots@pawb.social avatar

    Nothing went wrong. Remember the era where every sequel was straight to DVD? Who remembers The Lion King 2? How about Brother Bear 2? Sonic Adventure 2?

    It’s difficult to iterate on a piece of media that was written to be a standalone entity.

    The only exceptions really are when stories are split into multiple games (such as halo 1-3)

    Revan343,

    Lion King 2 was pretty good. Also, direct to VHS

    Uhh…there was a Brother Bear 2?

    Wahots,
    @Wahots@pawb.social avatar

    There was, don’t watch it, it bombed xD

    hazeebabee,

    100% on everything except including sonic adventure 2 in your list. The chao garden was so great in that one i still go back and play it now and then. And the music to the intro stage is a straight up classic lol

    SCmSTR,

    I forgot who or what it was who said this, but it was about musicians making albums. The first album they make was made with ideas from their entire lives before that point. The next one they only had a year or a few.

    The same could be said for great movies with shit sequels: first movie is a ball of fantastic ideas, anything lesser probably gets taken out… To be put in a crappy sequel. And then the next movie has to come out in only a few years. That just isn’t very much time to read and experience the world and innovate and stuff.

    Sure, it happens, but extremely rarely. And when it does, those are the truly special people worth following and giving loyalty to, in any platform or format or product or medium.

    Wahots,
    @Wahots@pawb.social avatar

    Well said!
