The LEGO Skywalker Saga did a better job of telling the story than the movies. One of the few games I 100% completed. Just a fun, chill way to unwind.

nyankas, do gaming w Cities skylines 2 is broken

While that‘s true right now, a big patch called „Economy 2.0“ is expected to drop this week (more on that here and here).

I really hope this will be a successful first step of making the game actually better than its predecessor. Unfortunately the economy simulation is only one of many issues which make me want to play something else after a few minutes of gameplay. I think it‘ll be at least another year until they‘re able to fix all these minor annoyances, which sum up to one very big annoyance. Like not being able to place stuff sometimes without any obvious reason. Or those ugly, steep pathways on lots, when the connecting street isn‘t completely flat. Or missing animations for firemen, which currently only have to drive up to a burning building in order to stop a fire.

Cities Skylines was a better Sim City (2013) and was justifiably loved for that. For now, Cities Skylines 2 is unfortunately just a worse Cities Skylines.

CinnamonTheCat,
@CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org avatar

Building a pedestrian over or underpass is another story entirely, had to force the game to do it and even then I somehow managed to place a path that looked like it was going through the roundabout, but somehow it wasn’t

Gerudo,

I miss the mods of CS1. Move it and the traffic manager were must haves. You’d think they would have brought those features into 2.

The built-in path connections are so bad.

CinnamonTheCat,
@CinnamonTheCat@beehaw.org avatar

I think traffic manager is mandatory to be included in the base game to address traffic issues

magic_lobster_party, (edited ) do gaming w Let's discuss: Half-Life

HL2 is probably the game I’ve replayed the most. It’s just as amazing every time.

When I played it for the first time almost 20 years ago (gosh!) I expected all games would have this level of immersion onward. It was such a leap forward. Things I normally could expect from the real world applied to HL2 as well.

Oh, there’s roller mines hurtling towards me? Obviously I’m supposed to throw them down the cliff using my gravity gun. No explanation from the game about this. It just felt like I would do the same in the real world.

Is this immersion the future of gaming? I can’t wait to see what the future will bring!

Turns out 20 years later that HL2 was a one of a kind game. Other games might have better graphics and physics, but no game is HL2.

modifier,

The graphics still impress me. It’s like the effects in Jurassic Park in that, while the overall tech has improved by leaps and bounds, the execution is so good that it still dazzles.

teawrecks,

The original graphics, physics, and performance were incredible for the time, but to be fair, that’s not what you’re running when you download HL2 on steam today. The textures have been silently updated many times over the years. Your mind’s eye says “yeah, this is how I remember it”, and I’ve seen multiple streamers playing it for the first time thinking they’re seeing the original textures from 2004.

bonegakrejg,

It does everything through clever game design, nothing takes you out of the game. No cut scenes or text popping up or freezing everything while dialogue is going on. You’re just in that world.

appel, do gaming w Let's discuss: LEGO Games

I played this open world Lego game where you had to deliver pizzas on a skateboard or something, but I was too young and couldn’t figure out how to complete the game, or it kept bugging. I can’t remember what it was called.

Edit: ah of course it was Lego island 2, the image was familiar

I also played a sort of Bionicle mmo in the browser that i thought was cool. I wonder if any of the old flash games are archived somewhere? There were so many.

knokelmaat,

For your last question: BioMedia Project, they have almost everything!

appel,

Wow that’s amazing, thank you. It was the voa nui game I was thinking of. Is there something like this for the other Lego web games?

exocrinous,

Lego Island 2 was great

SnotFlickerman, (edited ) do gaming w Let's discuss: Mass Effect
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Mass Effect Andromeda is mostly hated, but hot damn, it’s disappointing that it was, because it brought back all the best aspects of the original Mass Effect and iterated upon them greatly. Open world planets to explore with a big, fun to drive vehicle.

I would say it’s main failing was the story and the companions, which was generally forgettable, but the world building was quite good and the environments were beautiful.

For all the failures of the facial animations and dead eyes upon release, the actual game itself is really beautiful when it comes to scenic vistas and so on. Part of the trouble is you spend a large mount of the early game stuck inside samey indoor environments with these dead eyed NPCs, so when it came out, the opening of the game gave people a bad view by focusing you on the games worst offenses right out of the gate. That’s a hard hill for a lot of people to climb over, understandably so.

I just think it was incredibly disappointing because it was in many ways a way stronger game (gameplay-wise and environment-wise) than Mass Effect 2/3. It was a huge step up in quality for the franchise, but because of a botched story and facial animations, it nearly killed the franchise entirely.

It was also one of those games that suffered from Gamergate bullshit. Complaints of Sarah Ryder not being attractive enough and complaints too many LGBT characters. I remember when I used to think EA was lying that they thought they won Worst Company from The Consumerist because they had anti-LGBT people doing write-in campaigns against them. I believe them now, even though it felt like they were hiding behind that at the time. Because those are bullshit complaints.

Also, is it just me or did Baldur’s Gate 3 prove you could do a modern version of one of these games in the classic isometric overhead view style?

I’d love to see a Mass Effect style game in a modern isometric overhead view turn-based tactical combat type situation, like X-COM but more like an RPG than a tactical combat game with minor RPG elements.

SteposVenzny,

Andromeda has the biggest difference I’ve ever seen between low graphics settings and high ones. I wonder if the lack of recognition for its beautiful environments isn’t mainly that they just weren’t beautiful on most people’s systems.

BolexForSoup, (edited )
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

One thing that really soured my taste with Andromeda was the very clunky, but for some odd reason still necessary platforming. It always ground things to a halt for me and reminded me I was playing a video game, which is not a fun feeling. Like recognizing that actors are on a set in the middle of the movie.

They also did not really explore what different species could look like. It just felt like any group I could’ve seen in the Milky Way when they had given themselves an excuse to do literally whatever they wanted. Like halo 4 choosing to have me fight the not-covenant again after 3 rounded the story out and gave them a mechanism for dropping the chief literally anywhere at any time.

I also found most of the squadmates to not be very memorable. It felt like they were going out of their way to make sure they didn’t resemble any of the previous ensembles.

That being said, I think the game did an incredible job of not falling into the usual paradigm of “this is the good option, this is the bad option.” There was a lot more nuance to some of the decisions and it really had me stopping and thinking about how I wanted to proceed.

Still, I never finished the game. Got several dozen hours and it was enjoyable enough, but a lot of dropped balls.

Viper_NZ,

The thing that I loved about Mass Effect was the characters.

Andromeda’s characters were straight up uninteresting or plain annoying.

I think they probably need you to use their account in order to allow cross-play coop.

circuitfarmer,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

At the very least it gives them a way to potentislly contact you with offers. Corporate people probably also think it makes you more likely to get another title from the same publisher, though depending on the launcher I think it’s actually the reverse.

MJBrune,

Is it though? Lots of people don’t have the same mindset and welcome things like newsletters and ads. Something like 70% of web clients don’t use adblockers.

SteposVenzny, do gaming w Let's discuss: The Sims

I can’t think of another game that I like so much and enjoy playing so little. I will spend countless hours creating families and houses and then five minutes playing the actual game before I’m like “oh, right, I hate this” and then I start making another family.

CrabAndBroom,

The thing that helped me felt very counterintuitive, but I ended up just picking one family member as a ‘main’ character, and letting the rest run on their own.

My instinct is always to try and micro-manage everyone in the household, which gets stressful quickly. If I focus on one person and let the rest just generate their own stories I tend to last a lot longer.

Megaman_EXE,

I loved the building, but I find the other half of the gameplay quite boring. Some of the more focused games i thought were a bit better, but it’s been quite some time since I’ve played them.

I really enjoyed the GBA titles

eldavi,

I loved the building, but I find the other half of the gameplay quite boring.

i would spend hours using cheats to create the perfect house for the sims family and then lose interest within 30 minutes of letting the family do its thing.

i would rinse and repeat with each house becoming more elaborate and strange each time; they should make a game that focuses on that aspect of it more

SteposVenzny,

!;!;!;!;!

Megaman_EXE,

Have you seen any of the youtube previews of Paralives? I’m very curious if the building in that title will be better. They have a couple features that seem really nice

godzilla_lives,

I absolutely adored the Urbz game for DS. Pretty sure it’s the same game as the GBA version, but it had an added post-game minigame. I loved maxing out friendships and having bonus areas to decorate!

Ethereal87, do gaming w Let's discuss: Stardew Valley
@Ethereal87@beehaw.org avatar

Hmm…440 hours on Steam…probably another 125 on the Switch…

I love this game. It’s so cozy and comfortable. I found SDV after my divorce just when it had originally released and I was drawn into the cute world and how much character oozes from every corner. Every person you meet has something going on or you can just be a weird hermit building out your farm in peace. There’s enough of a story to propel you forward but never overbearing and it gets out of the way when it’s “done”.

As time has gone on from my first playthrough, I’ll typically dive back in when the itch strikes or a new content update comes along. The last few playthroughs I’ve done a lot to mod the game and introduce new things into the world to discover, some of which just feels indistinguishable from the official content and others that just help reduce barriers that I want to skip over (like fishing).

Stardew Valley is a game I will likely always go back to. I’m sure it will eventually eclipse my current most played game (Team Fortress 2 @ ~800 hours). I’ve tried other games like it and while they’re fun, none seem to have the staying power that Stardew has over me. While I will absolutely check out his next game, I’m hoping Stardew Valley never really stops being updated over the years.

YurkshireLad, do gaming w Let's discuss: DOOM

The original DOOM game was the first game I played with a friend where our PCs were connected together. It was a riot, especially when wearing headphones and hearing growls from behind you. I know modern tech has improved exponentially and graphics are unbelievable. But at the end of the day, it’s the experience that counts. And experiencing a multiplayer game for the first time like that, hasn’t been beaten yet, for me.

sub_ubi,

Same here. My folks caved and bought a second phone line for computing, however it didn’t help. My friend & I would use the first phone line for voice communication :)

The phone pressed to my ear with my shoulder, yelling to my buddy while fighting off cacademons, such good times.
