low spec gaming looking pretty sunny right now gang (beehaw.org)

Considering the Switch 2 (with those pretty joystick well covers to protect from drift, omg) and the Ryzen Z2 Go announcements, the low cost and availability of Steam Deck & parity level APU machines for purchase now, and the giant 1080p gaming install base represented by current gen consoles, it sure seems like low spec & 1080p...

Bazzite fixes all of those issues you mentioned in your third paragraph.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’ve never encountered any of the issues you’ve talked about here, and every deck-verified game has worked on my Legion Go. Often better, as many “Playable” titles only have marks deducted for small text, which looks fine at 2560*1600.

As for the lesser used distro, I can understand where that creates issues. However, due to it’s immutability, Bazzite is a consistent target to support with no real variations in system packages.

Don't sleep on Retroachievements, big competition coming to beehaw & RA soon (docs.retroachievements.org)

What’s retroachievements? Basically it adds XBOX Live style achievements and global high score tables to retro emulation platforms. This added layer of social gaming and community driven accomplishment hunting really builds on the retro games emulation experience. The best part is you can get it running on pretty much any...

Usually I don’t make these sort of replies, but did you even try and figure it out for yourself? You literally go to the website and type Contra into the search box…

No, I know that already, I’m talking about in the real world and how the game gets it wrong, as well as the dishwasher.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Huh, that’s cool. All the ones at places I worked just had the legs with adjustable feetsies. They sucked to move.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I feel like I’m missing something, what does the title mean?

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I genuinely think it’s already possible. The PS5 doesn’t exactly have a very new processor, it’s a 4000-series (desktop) Renoir, 7nm, Zen 2 architecture. The Z1E (the chip in the Lenovo Legion Go & ROG Ally X) is a 7040-series (mobile) Phoenix, 4nm, Zen 4/RDNA3 architecture.

The Z1E is basically 10% less performant for about 1/4 the juice. You could easily keep the same resolution, whilst dropping things like particles, shadow effects, etc that aren’t going to be as missed on a much smaller display. I’ve got a Legion but I believe the Ally X has a docked higher TDP mode that would push it to being competitive with the PS5, or at least it would certainly be possible with an active cooling dock.

AMD literally designed the Z1E for handhelds, so Sony would be remiss not to use it. That or a potential “Z2E” successor chip seen as this one is pushing over 18 months since it was announced.

cpu-monkey.com/…/compare_cpu-sony_playstation_5-v…

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

PS5, kinda famously, has no exclusive games. I doubt it would be that taxing on devs to essentially create a build that changes it from Ultra settings to High equivalent to the PC versions when they’re all running on an x86 platform. The Series S is just garbage hardware that Microsoft should have never released, the Z1E already outperforms it handily.

I also, out of curiosity, did a search for the “Z2E” and it looks like a large leak surrounding it hit last month: gamesradar.com/…/the-amd-chip-that-could-power-ne…

This chip would be more than capable of matching the PS5’s APU. But the Z2 they’re releasing alongside it will be decently cheaper while matching the Z1E’s performance. So it’ll come down to whether Sony prioritises cost or performance. My money’s on cost though, they’re going to want this thing to be cheaper than a Steam Deck, and the Z2E will put it in Legion Go/Ally X price territory.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That’s why I use Steam and do not buy on GOG.

Wait, why Steam? GOG only sells DRM-free games. Any Windows game that works through Steam on Linux, works downloading it from GOG with standalone WINE. Or via things like Heroic Launcher, Lutris or Bottles.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yea, that as well for sure.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I have a Legion Go, not a ROG Ally, so I may be wrong here. But Handheld Daemon (HHD) (included OOTB with handheld images) supports fine TDP/fan controls. You get to it by long-pressing the button that brings up the Quick Access Menu in big picture mode.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

HHD allows those things though? https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/pictrs/image/134674c4-c30b-470b-8800-d61ec900c3e4.webp

It even hooks into the Steam TDP controls: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/pictrs/image/6c050c1e-6d02-4cad-9eff-f6d29f5e49f2.webp

(disclaimer: again, this is a legion go, i cannot confirm that for the rog ally)

Thanks for the article, super interesting to see his predictions, they weren’t that far off.

princessnorah,

I believe the place it was banned, was on consoles.

Ah, I see you also just got it for free on Epic 😅

If you haven’t played since relatively early in it’s release, I believe that was a bug that has now been fixed.

princessnorah,

No, it’s a mobile-only feature. On desktop the game only saves once the day ends, either via bed or exhaustion.

I think they were implying they like their instance but wish they could downvote sometimes. My instance doesn’t allow it either, and coming from more than a decade on Reddit, it can be frustrating at times. Still, I wouldn’t leave Blahaj because my interests align with those of the instance’s owners.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

So I just ran across this, after leaving a comment in that same thread. Posting it again here to try and add some sanity back to this discussion:

Okay, but there’s a line here somewhere. Pushing for new features and complaining in the issue tracker that a bug hasn’t been fixed soon enough is absolutely entitlement. Expecting someone to follow through on their word and release the source code is another thing entirely. Especially if they make the decision to stop working on it.

Go check out this EoL statement from the developer of Nomie. He open-sourced the code without even being asked too.

princessnorah, (edited )
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You’re putting words in their mouth. Also, as far as I know, the developer is a woman.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Wait, this is actually, finally real?

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Cool, so they went from a 5yr release schedule to a 12yr one.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Counterpoint: Cardinal George Pell tried to pull the same move in a child sex abuse case. Here’s Tim Minchin’s Come Home (Cardinal Pell) for your viewing pleasure.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That also reeks of not fully understanding accessibility needs though. Does it allow breath input for example? www.quadstick.com

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Okay, but you already can’t use a keyboard and mouse in most games on an Xbox. It has to specifically be enabled by the developer, and the game would have to be coded to even accept that input.

All HID input devices have identifiers that they communicate to the host to determine their functions. I guess you could potentially make a device that appears to be a controller and translates keyboard/mouse with a couple USB inputs. You could probably get a Pi to do that. But no one cares about winning on console that badly, they just go play on PC 🙄

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I wonder if QuadStick has approval. Specifically designed for people with minimal to no hand function, which their controller isn’t going to fucking work for.

princessnorah, (edited )
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You’re correct about the specs of the device. However, after announcement/release there was controversy that the cable included in the box is only capable of USB 2.0 transfer speeds. But Marques Brownlee pointed out that the same is usually true with the included cable for Android devices too. I got a portable SSD to use with my iPad Pro and it just comes with a short high-speed cable anyway…

Edit: The included cable with the iPad is also only 2.0 speeds, even though it has a USB4 40Gbps port.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Okay, then I’m going to default back to the fact that someone’s going to break the DRM and still make those devices, and this is only going to hurt people using accessible controllers.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I bet they also won’t approve controllers designed to work on other consoles/devices as well. Necessitating getting one accessibility controller for your xbox and one for everything else.

    Yeah, I figured OP meant they didn’t play them yet because they didn’t want to get invested and not be able to save. Not because they wouldn’t actually work.

    Edit: I did not see their comment below until I after I posted this.

    @princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    I believe the consoles came with 2 memory cards back when they were released in 2000.

    Oh no, they did not my friend. I’m just a bit older than you so I remember when my family got our PS2. They were an optional accessory. Yes, it was optional to be able to save your game.

    Edit: Also, my older brother and I (faithful younger sibling backup) convinced our father to get one soon after launch, as it was the cheapest DVD player available when it released, at least here in Australia.

    The Steam Deck doesn’t have a discrete GPU either. Though this was with an Intel chip, and they don’t have anywhere near as good onboard graphics as AMD.

    princessnorah,
    @princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Framework’s already been encouraging this, they released some designs for a Mini-PC when they released the first upgraded board kit. I think it’s an awesome use case for old laptop parts.

    princessnorah,
    @princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Woah, that’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. Are they still developing new games, or are you just playing the classics?

    princessnorah,

    Is there enough people to play against to make it worthwhile? Over just playing one of the older games I still own on Steam…

    I’m taking my time with my first play through of Baldur’s Gate 3. I’m enjoying it a lot, the way it interweaves characters you’ve met before into the narrative later one is really good.
