Welcome to the FPS vibe shift: At the end of 2025, it's clear that casual shooters are back in a big way. (www.pcgamer.com) angielski

The FPS is once again in transition. It’s a change that’s been percolating for a while, but 2025 was the year a number of developing trends in PC gaming’s favorite genre finally boiled over....

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Casual shooters never went away… Unless whoever wrote this thinks stuff like Fortnite isn’t casual.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

That doesn’t even have anything to do with what casual game even means.

There are no story lines in Fortnite, afaik. They do sometimes have special events, like in-game concerts. But again, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a casual game. Destiny 2 is exactly like you’re describing and it’s still a casual game.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

So if I log in to the game, I’ll have hella money for skins? 🤔

Edit: Dont even need the money cuz they also gave every player every skin, even dev only ones 🤣

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I actually liked Dying Light a lot more before the multiplayer update rebalanced everything. God damn single player game is now balanced for two people, even when you’re solo.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Is it just more Ghost of Tsushima or does it add any new mechanics?

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

It’s a rare breed of game that gets me pre-ordering these days. It has to be something I know I will want, from a dev/publisher with a proven track record of making good shit and not being exploitative to customers, and be more about multiplayer than single.

I haven’t pre-ordered for any other reason since they stopped giving you physical swag for doing so (and it only was $5 down and could be cancelled for a refund while still keeping the swag and digital distribution wasn’t even a thing, so they actually could run out of copies).

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Just save what you would spend on subscribing to tbis dumb shit for a few months and build your own machine so you don’t have to throw money away on a subscription service.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

That was the OG way of piracy. Except the hardware was, like, rum, sugar, and cannons. 🤷‍♂️

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Why can’t we have boats and parrots? 😕

The writing wastes a LOT of time.

The writing is the reason for playing the game. If that’s wasted time, maybe this kind of RPG isn’t your thing.

It’s also paraded as pro-communist media, and it really isn’t at all.

100% dependant on your play style. If you go down Socialist Cop route, it’s pro communism. If you go down the Crypto Fascist route, the game is pro-racism.

That’s why it is one of the best RPGs of all time; You have so much choice and agency that you get like 16 different versions of the same story, based entirely on what you choose to do, and those stories are written as well as any book.

Gamers Are Overwhelmingly Negative About Gen AI in Video Games, but Attitudes Vary by Gender, Age, and Gaming Motivations. (quanticfoundry.com) angielski

In a recent survey, we explored gamers’ attitudes towards the use of Gen AI in video games and whether those attitudes varied by demographics and gaming motivations. The overwhelmingly negative attitude stood out compared to other surveys we’ve run over the past decade....

Most of the CGI in Fury Road is used for the backdrops, not the main focus of the action. You wouldn’t even notice it unless it’s pointed out and you see the real world place they filmed vs what they made it look like with CGI in the film.

Compare that to, say, the crappy alligators in Eraser. Or even the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

And that’s my point; back in the 90s, that shit wasn’t invisible. It was used in the foreground, not the background. Practical effects still look better for foreground action.

And I think my app is bugging out; I only saw the first two paragraphs originally. Now there are two more.

It’s not Baldi’s Basics, is it?

Is there a trick to controllers that I'm missing? angielski

I find that I prefer playing games on my PS5 so that I’m not battling Windows updates, spending a bunch of time tweaking settings, etc. But the shooter genre is something I’m finding very difficult on a controller. I grew up playing Unreal Tournament, Quake, etc., and I find it extremely easy to jump into games like...

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

The trick to Returnal, specifically, is to turn the aim asssist to max, and then also go into Accessibility options and make the crosshair as large as possible; the aim assist works off what’s inside tye crosshairs, so if you make it the size of the whole screen, you can’t really miss.

Control you just gotta be good. It’s aim assist fucking sucks. But that’s for the Service Weapon; you really should be meleeing and using telekinesis as your main damage output, and those do get a good aim assist.

Horizon also has great melee and aim assist, tho it’s aim assist doesn’t move the xhair onto things, it moves your arrows toward the target instead. Just keep the circle near enough to what you want to hit.

Also: Hella games support M&KB on PS5 and the PS5 now supports a heap of peripherials. Even my shit-ass Logitech K140 set works if I plug the wireless dongle into the PS5 when it did not work when I got the PS5.

Edit: Oh, also many games on the console have the option to use the gyro controls to aim. That can be a big help for some.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Playing GTA with a controller has been insanely easier than M&KB since I switched. Not just the aim assist, but the ease of doing practically everything makes it faster and smoother. Well… Except drive-bys. No aim assist when shooting from a car and you need ALL THE BUTTONS making it awkward lol

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Thats not a glove; his wrist is jist extra wrinkly when holding guns.

But also: He puts on a ring with a spike on it, too.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

From what I saw of this whole debacle was that the CEO himself uses GenAI for mocking up things for presentations he gives to the rest of the staff, and not something they do in general at the studio.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

IIRC, he was actively involved with the development of The Thing for PS2, also. And that is a pretty damn good game for being an older, AA, film tie-in game.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Toxic Commando. 🤦‍♂️

I was over here wondering why John Carpenter was even involved with this because my mind kept swapping commando for Avenger which is an entirely different franchise.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Shadow of Mordor is the only thing on this list I do not already own.

As new Yakuza announcements dropped, top walkthrough writing guy in anglosphere refuses to play these at all (bsky.app) angielski

The name is CyricZ, and he is the reason the west can get platinum in this series. Over the years, he wrote the best guides on gamefaqs one can ask for. His appearance on reddit has been seen as a second coming of Christ lol....

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

None of these games are very PC. Even the most modern ones have humor and ideas stuck firmly in the early 90s and can be in extremely poor taste across all manner of things from misoginy, classism, racism, agism and ablism.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

And I’m agreeing with you by adding more context. They’re not PC at all. Even in the way they show sexual misconduct as being bad is through the lens of a “white knight” mindset (male lead must rescue the damsel) or for creepy gross-out gags (old, homeless man flashing people on the street that you must catch).

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Dr. Mario or Microsurgeon so you can pretend like you’re curing yourself 😃

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

What am I supposed to explore when I am going back the way I came? The simplest way of doing fast travel still generally requires you find POIs by actually going to their location before you can travel to them instantly.

I’ve done my exploring, now I want to sell all the shit I found and get back to finding more!

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

And those get pretty repetitive and aren’t rewarding enough that I wanna go through that every time. Especially RDR2’s fucking habit of spawning some kind of big animal right the fuck on top of me giving me zero chance to react and making me lose all the animal pelts I’d been collecting right as I am walking up to the motherfucker who buys 'em. 🤬

(I’ve been playing that one recently and it’s reminding me why I stopped)

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

What did that guy do to end up inside a burning man effigy?

What the fuck just grew from his blood?

What the fuck was that billowing from his back boil?

Did those pigs eat that orc’s vomit?

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Nah the best bug was cats dying of alcohol poisoning because they’d walk through the tavern, get booze spilled on them, and then lick it off themselves when cleaning. Since they weren’t programmed to drink booze directly, they had 0 tolerance for it and would easily die from it.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

You and me both. I want to mod shit into the game that can’t be done through the RAWs. 😩

Free for existing Guild Wars owners

I have (or had) the first one. Does it mean GW1 or GW2? I’m not even sure it I have it on a digital library or if I had it physically, it’s so old. 🤔

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I am just gonna pretend like Epic and HB banned it only after see all this PR work they’re trying to do to save this god awful looking piece of “art.”

And just becsuse the comments here don’t seem to know the real root issue: The game originally featured a child protagonist, and that was what Valve was sent to review. They only changed the protag to an adult after the rejection and now they are throwing a hissy fit over their pedo game being banned.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

From the title I was thinking of, like, Grognak’s Adventure inside of Fallout 4.

But from the body text… Yeah, I don’t really do that. I am usually pretty annoyed by how many servers for games I want to play aren’t actually playing the game itself, but their own game inside the game and making up their own rules. Which is totally fine, but it should advertise it somehow or not even be public as many of these groups just kick randos out anyway.

I do like a lot of mods that were inspired by these games within games tho. ARMA Life only exists because people were already trying to play the normal game that way, and with the mod the rules can be more easily enforced through scripts instead of requiring hands-on management from an admin.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I kinda stopped cheating in games when cheats stopped being button combos or console commands. I never cared enough about using them that I am gonna go out of my way to modify the game or use a 3rd party tool to be able to cheat.

If the game has them built in, I might partake. Tho even back in the day, the one I used most just made everyone have a larger head (idk why this was even such a common “cheat”).

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

True; a lot of cheats are now found as Accessibility Options. Like a lot of action games have a god mode option in the same place you’d turn text to speech on and select colorblind modes.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I’ve been playing GTA5’s story mode again. I haven’t played through it since it first came out on PC. I missed the fun dialogue, over the top situations, and the actually good gameplay that isn’t marred by “bugs” that are so consistent in the Online portion that it’s hard to see them as actual bugs and not intentional annoyances designed to discourage griding for cash to buy the fun stuff.

Honestly the most annoying thing in the story mode is how Franklin immediately goes home to wear the laziest bum outfit imaginable after I just spent like a million dollars buying him actually good drip and then switching to Micheal or Trevor to do a mission.

I could write a book on how many little niggling annoyances exist in GTAO.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I think we should keep them out of America, too.

Help me decide what I should name my game! Currently Country Architect, it turns out that "country" has a double meaning in English that I was not aware of ["Infrastruction" it is.] (x.com) angielski

EDIT6: Due to Steam needing an email from me so that I could get a new link, I decided it’s not worth the hassle to change its name (Keeping the name polled high anyway)....

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

it turns out “country” has a double meaning in English

You mean how it’s used to describe rural areas, too? It still works the way you expect it to, even under that definition. 🤷‍♂️

Or do you mean the genre of music? 🤔

Why are there so many bloody roguelikes or roguelites, and what really makes a game roguish? (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

Some days, I think I’d rather gouge my eyes out than read another email about a new roguelike or roguelite. This confuses me, because many of favourite games are roguelikes or roguelites, including Dead Cells, Balatro, FTL: Faster Than Light, and the recent Morsels, a reeking procedural dumpsite that speaks to the...

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

What makes a game roguish?

  • Random level design
  • Death is permanent
  • Turn based gameplay
  • Grid based movement

Most modern roguelikes tend to only have the first two of these, tho. But those are the 4 main elements of the original game for which the genre derives its own, Rogue.

And Rogue-lites tend to make progression persist after death, at least partially. Such as with the unlockable weapons and things in Hades, while the boons and other abilities are pick ups you only have until death untill you pick them up again the next run.

Settings you believe ANY game should have? (This is me advocating for a restart/reboot button on ALL games) angielski

Hear me out. A few games have shader installations that will usually apply any new settings you put down AFTER you restart the game, and a lot of other games have graphics settings that will only apply after you’ve rebooted the game....

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

Everything should be controllable. Give me all the options. Every graphical feature, every UI element, even gameplay mechanics. If it is as simple as adjusting a number or selecting something from a table, give me the option to control it myself.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

This is also hella common in a lot of online or multiplayer live service games recently. Forces you to alt-F4 if on PC. Especially bad with Sony’s playstation ports; they treat it like you’re on the PS5 and can just switch games to automatically close the running one.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I remember an ad for Half-Life that was like “Most shooters just have you run and shoot, but Half-Life will make you think.

It did not. The puzzles weren’t anything a toddler couldnt solve in 2 seconds, there are barely any of them anyway, and most of the game is just running and shooting.

Valve Addresses Steam Machine Anti-Cheat Concerns, Says It's Working Towards Support (thisweekinvideogames.com) angielski

An article from this weekend that seemingly got buried by soundbites about the Steam Machine price in the same interview, but given that we have no information on price, this seems way more interesting to me. I mean…I basically self-select games that don’t use these kinds of anti-cheat at all, but this is important...

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

The majority of gamers buy into the lie that kernel level anti-cheats are more effective, when they really aren’t.

I like playing Supermarket Simulator and it’s basically like what it was like working at Walmart. It’s oddly relaxing when you don’t have to actually move your body and lift shit while stocking shelves. 🤷‍♂️
