Sina,

Celeste, Hollow Knight, Talos Principle, Hyper Light Drifter…

Sina,

Many retro games are better. AA games were made with heart back then & that made it possible to make games that are incredible both in terms of artistry, grandeur and gameplay. Games like Baldur’s Gate 1-2, Chrono Cross etc are not possible in today’s climate.

On the other hand we have been handed indie games like Celeste and Hollow Knight, so I don’t know. Amazing games still exists, it’s just not really comparable.

Sina,

I think the gaming industry has not existed for long enough for this to be a thing. Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross are just as good today as they were 20-30 years ago, same for Baldur’s Gate or Jazz Jackrabbit.

One example comes to mind is Oddworld: New and Tasty. It’s fairly faithful to the original game, but at the same time the updated 3d rendered graphics failed to portray the same mysticism & gloominess. (and yes I have played Odyssey just recently on my retro PC) Not saying no one has pulled this off, but it’s like Resident Evil is the only one I can think of.

There are VERY FEW games where pop culture references need to be updated so much that this is worth it. It’s better to just make a new game with a completely new plot then.

Sina,

I agree, Skyrim was a huge disappointment for me.

Sina,

Celeste is the best of all time in its genre. i have put more than 100 hours in it and yet i’m still shit, but it’s just so gratifying to complete a harder screen…

Sina,

You will die thousands of times, but until you reach your limit as a gamer it will never feel like banging your head against an unbreakable wall. Just moving around is so much fun in Celeste.

Sina,

I think Gothic 1 is much better. :p (it would totally deserve a spot in this conversation, but it’s a very highly regarded game )

Sina,

It just occurred to me that Death Really (1995) would deserve to be talked about as well, it’s just an incredible little game.

Sina,

I prefer looking at female butts over male butts and I find armor far more pleasing on lithe female figures than on males, even if we completely ignore everything else.

Sina,

While I know they just wanted to shit on Starfield, but at least I like how they’ve put Oblivion & Morrowind at the top, because I agree those two are by far the best on this list.

As for Starfield, It’s basically Skyrim in space. To me most of the criticisms Starfield gets outside of the -to me- irrelevant technicalities (loading screens, performance) apply to Skyrim as well. I played Skyrim at release and I was super disappointed, now playing Starfield felt largely the same, but a wee bit better. I don’t think the whole RPG progression system makes sense in a scifi rpg shooter, so that part is worse than Skyrim obviously, but at the same time the planets & various biomes make open world exploration more fun to me, though the main story is equally bad & there are a lot of immersion breaking things that make no sense “in space”. For example I love the digipick minigame, but it’s immersion breaking as f. (and then there is that part where I just joined a serious intergalactic organization & after like 1-2 missions they sent me on a diplomatic quest to decide the fate of the galaxy, basically)

What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games? angielski

I’ve been thinking about making this thread for a few days. Sometimes, I play a game and it has some very basic features that are just not in every other game and I think to myself: Why is this not standard?! and I wanted to know what were yours....

Sina,

. The only way you’re going to reasonably-reliably do anti-cheat stuff is going to be to have a trusted system, where the player can’t do anything to their system.

Even then there are possible options. (hdmi splitter etc)

Sina,

I dislike this.

Sina,

The only Activision game I care about is WoW, but the game changed so much in a niche hardcore direction that even with Microsoft owning them, my hope is very limited about the game, probably I’ll never play again.

Sina,

Classic WoW exists & you could play Vanilla again if you wanted do. However that’s not really what I’m talking about. For me peak WoW was Legion and Pandaria probably and I still somewhat liked Cataclysm up until the final patch at least.

What is happening now is that if you have no interest in Mythic raiding or Myhtic+ timed dungeons, then there is barely anything else. The cash shop is also increasingly ruining everything, there is also how thanks to WoW tokens my brain just won’t allow me to casually buy something expensive on the AH anymore since gold has a tangible real $ value & then there is the abomination called the Trading Post.

Sina,

studios targeting genres other than open world action-rpg.

With the corporate culture that’s developed in the industry I don’t think anyone should want that. Indie has the small project space covered & they make far better games than EA or Activision ever could in those genres. Corporate sellouts cannot beat passion, but they can make games so large in scope that small studios just cannot compete with that.

Sina, (edited )

So far Bethesda is the only company that is clearly cutting the corners of their AAA products.

Starfield is the sloppiest Bethasda game ever, cutting corners to save cost is not how I would describe its development at all.

I agree with what you are saying though. Spending 40% of the budget on voice acting and cinematographic dialog is extremely wasteful. As long as the gameplay is good and graphics are pretty gamers will like the product.

Sina,

I played Morrowind, Oblivion & Skyrim at release. Compared to Starfield they were far more polished to me. Yes crashes & the odd broken quest happened, but overall they were playable, people without an internet connection could buy the games in a shop & then finish them. Also Oblivion had the best graphics for an open world rpg when it came out, while also running pretty well on the shit tier GPUs of the time. In my mind, Starfield is not pretty on ultra, runs like shit on decent hardware even at relatively low settings and the list of broken things is endless.

Sina,

Imagine if people could buy a background music only -subtitle dialog- edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 for €40. How would the sale distribution go? I think this is a rather interesting thought experiment, I would personally opt to buy the cheaper version for sure, even though I do know the voice acting in BG3 is a landmark in gaming.

Sina,

I have died twice due to dialog choices. Once Lae’zel killed me in camp & once I turned into a mind flayer under the Absolute, thus ending my journey.

Sina, (edited )

I think the problem with player choice is that you are often not presented with the choice that you or your character would normally want, or that the game intentionally hides the information from you that you would need to make an informed decision. Also this is subjective, but I don’t like being pranked by the dungeon master, I quit tabletop rpgs due to this reason as a kid.

And the case about the game being interactive fiction instead of a “game” game is not entirely unfounded either. Not that I would consider that a bad thing necessarily.

(edit: I wrote this 1h into Act 3. Since then I finished the game & I found Act3 the best part of the game & rather amazing on the whole…)

Sina,

In a good rpg, having a couple of these is fine, but in my opinion in Baldur’s Gate 3 these intentionally undecipherable decisions are overabundant. I’m not saying BG3 is bad, in fact many and perhaps most things are absolutely incredible. I just feel that that presented choice options & some parts of the big plot could have been done better.

Sina, (edited )

I don’t recommend doing this. The dialog is far worse with the awkward gaps of silence.

I remember watching a few short vids on Youtube where people were making claims that Friends is unfunny garbage without without the laugh track, but the truth is the awkward silences kill all jokes.

Sina,

It’s exactly this! I was using the mlem app on iOS & it gave me a “posting error” message, so I tried a few times before giving up!

Sina,

don’t have to deal with that software that doesn’t know wtf a 2.1 setup is.

Why would software need to know that?

Sina, (edited )

Consider using a frame limiter in the 30-35 fps range to fix the choppiness. That’s what I’m doing on my 4790k & it’s fine.

Sina,

My approach to this problem is that I just select the easy difficulty & just throw away all the crap that would make the game easier. (if I picked up 100x random shit from goblins I could make my character stronger from the extra gold, but I choose not to) Also I just disregard crafting as well. I know that I could play on normal (or hard), fiddle with all these systems & make my team strong enough to deal with any challenge. it’s a choice, since I’m playing a single player game for my own enjoyment, might as well make it challenging on my own terms.

Sina,

Am I supposed to be looting everything I see? If not, then why is it the major income source, why are so many random objects worth selling and taking?

This is so true!

Sina,

In the current climate where it takes 30 patches and a year for a new release to become playable, discs are not very useful…

Sina,

mandating the right to transfer a digital license.

Even for the EU that is not an easy thing to deal with in practice. First they would need to outright ban practices where you rent your license for an unspecified time instead of owning it. (this is how it is with everything in mobile app stores, Steam, Epic etc…) And transfer of digital licenses in general is a very hard nut to crack. How do you simply prove who the license owner is? What about accounts being tied to licenses? (Imagine the EU asking software companies that all products above the value of €25 must be sold with a hardware key to run them & if the key is damaged they are mandated to replace it at the manufacturing cost of said hardware key, or use a central EU ran entity to handle these keys that the companies would need to buy from them. Pretty far fetched, isn’t it?)

Decades of lenient legislation made all this night impossible untangle…

Sina,

i’m not sure if you understood my comment. The issue is that they sell you software for the full price, but there is a fine print on there somewhere that clearly states that they can remove your access at any time due to a variety of reasons. For example I have lost games due to Apple policies forced the dev to remove them from the app store and then I could not reinstall them anymore.

Sina,

Sure, but it’s really weird that we are relying and want to rely on disks to be the license basically, because the data storage part is quite useless, at least when your connection is faster than your blue-ray drive. (plus you can directly download the patched game)

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun? (kbin.cafe) angielski

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

Sina,

No Man’s Sky. (boring Sandbox exploration without a soul and very unfun crafting)

Sina,

7, 8, 9, 10 are all great I think.

Sina,

My favorite game of the decade…

Sina,

What is wrong with liking 2d platforming?

Sina,

I played it for the duration of 2 afternoons a week ago.

Sina,

Starfield has ssd listed as “required”. Even if it runs from a HDD it might be horrible, like with No Man’s Sky.

Sina,

When it comes to cheap ssds M2 barely has an advantage over SATA, not in any practical sense anyway.

Sina,

I just reached the underdark, the only annoyance I’ve had is that I totally misunderstood my fellow party member’s intent with wanting to show me something & I had to reload my last save to avoid a gay romance I had no interest in being.

Sina,

right

Sina,

Oblivion was fantastic too I think. Things started going seriously downhill with Skyrim, at least that is what I think.
