I really dislike the new look. The first one had a simple but sleek aesthetic, this one just looks cheap and generic.

Hell yeah, the first one came out around the time when indie games started to take off. Braid, Limbo, World of Goo, Super Meat Boy.

I’ll be following this one. This was really the only game that stood out to me at TGA. But after the NMS release, I’ll be waiting for reviews.

Kbin_space_program,

Play the new Warframe update until then. Its got some trippy maps coming.

janAkali, do games w World of Goo 2 - Official Trailer 1

I love every single game these guys make, but World of Goo is definitely in my top 10 games of all time.
I can’t even believe they’re making a sequel. It’s the dream comes true.
Going to replay the original in 100th time.

funnystuff97,

Maybe it’s just me, but I liked Little Inferno much better. But I’m still excited for World of Goo 2, very excited for what they’re cooking.

Instigate,

Little Inferno was a great concept, and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. At that time I had never even heard of a game like it! Of course the genre has definitely expanded since then, but I honestly think Little Inferno was more novel than World of Goo (although I absolutely loved WoG too!)

    Cethin,

We can’t just get out of capitalism, but you can work to improve your situation. If you have a yard, grow a garden.

Also, see if there’s a mutual aid group in your area, and if not consider talking with your neighbors about what you can do to help each other out. One person might be good with car Maintanance. Another might be a good gardener. Everyone can contribute something.

  • Cethin,

Where did I say it would solve the climate crisis? I was just having an alternative to capitalism to provide some of your food. Of course it won’t dismantle capitalism or save the world. People have been gardening forever, yet here we are. It’s just a step you can take to take some control over your situation back.

no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism.

There was a time, long ago, where companies actually cared about their customers, and wanted to sell them good products while making a profit, and they strived for the win - win, and the “customer is always right” philosophy. They took their fair share, and they didn’t triy to squeeze every last dime out of their customers with crappy products.

Not that that they were saints by any stretch of the imagination (there were definitely bad players back then too) but there used to be a sense of ethics with Capitalism, in America at least, a sense of products being warrantied to work the way they should be and advertised as how they would actually work.

I have no effing idea how to get back to that state, as it seems like the “lunch for wimps” crowd are running the c-suites these days.

Regulation. Take the money out of governing, both national government and private directors. If someone makes decisions that affect many people, make that person accountable, either through a competitive market or a functioning justice system.

The problem is that the fantastically efficient tool that is capitalism will try to increase it reach as much as possible. Killing competition and undermining laws will always be the end goal, so long as they are in anyway allowed.

The reason companies used to care is because not caring drove customers to the competition. But then there was no competition, and the care evaporated. As long as they are allowed, they will take. Civility can only be guaranteed if profits are on the line.

This weird little persecution complex came out of nowhere. The post-gamergate crowd randomly latched onto this game thinking it's somehow gonna own the libs, and when no one gave them the reaction they wanted, they decided to declare themselves the winner of a battle nobody was actually fighting them on.

No one cares bud. Go play your game, whatever, have fun, no one's stopping you.

I understand why he's frustrated. EU citizens are just so damn lazy and won't help themselves. I've told all my friends and family, brought it up at parties and other gatherings to anybody who plays games. But there are EU gamers (streamers and consumers alike) who are chronically online, on every proprietary platform out there and who don't give 2 shits about the campaign.

    Edit: Fuck Thor.

    jol,

That’s not true. The petition to ban gay conversion therapy achieved the same number of signatures within days. This is just much more niche.

    atro_city,

Gaming is the biggest entertainment industry on the planet. Globally it generates more money than music and movies . Germany alone had an estimated 49 million players in 2022 (wikipedia), with France 45 million and Italy 36 million. Even if they were wrong by one decimal that would still make more than 12 million in those 3 countries alone.

The vast majority of European gamers are just too lazy to do anything in their own self-interest. It's embarrassing.

    jol, (edited )

Yeah but most gamers don’t care deeply about games. Meanwhile, most gay people care about about not being tortured, and other people can empathise with that. The amount of money in it plays literally no role in whether people would sign a petition.

commander, do games w Dave2D - Windows Was The Problem All Along (Lenovo Legion Go Windows 11 vs. SteamOS)

Every laptop I’ve bought has come with Windows including gaming ones. Up to really powerful computers. Like having a 4080 in it or down to just integrated. I could be doing nothing and you’ll hear the fan spin up hard on Windows.

On hardware with just integrated graphics, Windows just sucks compared to Linux. Fan spins up but you’ll still get animation hitches as Windows background services are doing something. Switch to Linux and resource usage just matches up really well with what you know you’ve installed and set to run. Just whatever is popular: Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, Pop_OS, etc compared to consumer Windows editions.

Plus it’s nice installing an OS and not having to go through pages of telemetry opt-outs, encouragement to buy O365, OneDrive, Copilot+, Gamepass, create online MS account, etc. Windows went from a relatively neutral marketplace, besides the bundled software, to a platform for marketing MS and other companies subscription services

Neutral base of fairly standardized open source Linux operating systems is going to show itself overtime as preferable as these controlled platforms get monetized harder. Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android are all in varying stages of being subscription and marketing data farms

    mohab, (edited )

You joke, but half of my Steam library is incompatible with Steam Deck. Like, I fucking hate Windows, but I'm stuck there for gaming, and I don't even play these multiplayer games. I'm talking Catherine, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Under Night In-Birth II… etc. Niche games all of them.

    xavier666,

I just checked the games on ProtonDB. Two games are Platinum are one is silver/gold. Essentially very less tinkering.

Steam Deck compatibility is usually very conservative so even though it says incompatible, it will probably work. Nowadays, I just check if the game has some weird DRM or anticheat, otherwise it just works.

    mohab,

Shows one platinum, one gold, and one silver on my end? Catherine is notorious for being difficult to run on Linux, even the comments on ProtonDB say so… IDK if I can consider that very little tinkering.

Plus, that doesn't include docked performance… I need stable 60FPS docked for fighting games.

Like, I see your point that it's almost there, but going full tilt into gaming on Linux RN still feels like a risky investment for both my time and money when my $400 Windows laptop runs everything OOTB.

    One day though.

    chronicledmonocle,

I made the jump two years ago. I started with a 512GB SATA SSD with Windows and then my main drive on Linux.

There aren’t any games I play regularly that don’t “just work” on Linux, but I also get that can depend on the person. I hope you can get there one day.

    Until then…maybe dual boot?

    mohab,

I am dual booting Artix and Win 11, and solely gamed on Linux for 2 years before getting into a bunch of games that don't run there, which eventually pushed me to dual boot Win 11.

I'd rather not touch Windows at all though and just hate it any time I have to use it for any reason other than gaming. The flip side is I hated gaming on Linux when I had to use it to play incompatible games.

I'll most likely just wait until my favorite games run on there and move for good. Maybe go for a Steam Deck then too. But RN attempting to go back to gaming on Linux feels like a potential time/money sink for non optimal results, which doesn't make sense when I already have a working setup.

    chronicledmonocle,

It’s always interesting seeing the different experiences people have. I have way less problems on Linux with games than I do on Windows. Mostly because every time I would boot into Windows, I’d have to spend 15-20 minutes on a good day installing patches for games and Windows Updates.

DoucheBagMcSwag, do games w The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake Reveal Livestream (starts in 23 hours)

    Don’t fuck with Skyblivion, Bethesda.

    Stovetop,

I don’t expect they would, since Skyblivion already has their blessing and the team has been working with representatives from Bethesda to make sure that everything they’re doing continues to be kosher with them.

The Skyblivion devs also released a statement recently that they are also looking forward to the release of this remaster, and believe that there is enough love to go around for both projects.

Basically, Oblivion fans are going to be eating well this year. If the official Oblivion remaster is underwhelming, there will still be Skyblivion to look forward to.

    TachyonTele,

It’s all kosher until Zenimax decides it can make more money.

    Stovetop,

Agreed, though one would think they’d have taken steps to C&D Skyblivion the very moment they decided to move forward with their own project if that was their intent. It wouldn’t make much sense otherwise to let Skyblivion keep going this whole time if they saw it as a threat to their profits, since the mod is pretty close to completion at this point.

    Hellinabucket,

If they C&D’d skyblivion now only to offer their own remaster it would turn a lot of people off of it, they’ll wait until a few months after the remasters release, once they’ve gotten the bulk of their sales in and aren’t worried about the PR backlashing cutting sales they’ll drop the hammer on the skyblivion team.

    Stovetop, (edited )

Wouldn’t be much of a point, though. Skyblivion is already just about done. If they C&D it later this year, there will still be a 99% finished Skyblivion floating around on various hosting sites that they’d never be able to stop people from getting their hands on. Basically I don’t think it’s a question of whether or not Microsoft/Zenimax would want to kill the project to boost their own profits, but rather if they even could at this point, and I think the answer is no. A few years ago may have been a different story, but that ship has sailed.

It’s not the same sort of situation as teams making mods or romhacks of Nintendo games who (foolishly) announce it early and get C&D’d immediately before there’s anything to play. Skyblivion is something you can play in an almost-complete state right now if you wanted, and I don’t think a C&D in a few month’s time will stop modders from finishing it anyways since it’s so close to completion.

moonlight, do games w Half-Life 2 RTX | Demo with Full Ray Tracing and Dlss 4 Announce

I honestly don't think this looks very good. The lighting and assets look good on their own, but this remaster completely changes the art direction of the original, and it ends up losing a lot of the atmosphere that the original had.

I hope they make some last minute changes, or we at least get a mod to restore it to the original game's aesthetics.

I think a simple color grade, and tweaking/removing some of the lights could basically fix it, so I'm a bit surprised they took this approach. It looks like they prioritized tech demo over faithful recreation.

    drasglaf,
    @drasglaf@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’ll probably be heavily modable , at least I hope so.

    moody,

It’s just a mod for HL2, so I imagine it can be modded the same way as HL2

    catloaf,

Yeah, the lighting was done for the regular lighting system. If you change that, you change how everything appears and basically have to redo all the lighting in the game.
