It is September now which means my wife has decided it is fall and time to celebrate 2 months of Halloween. Anyone have and spooky game recommendations?
Horror comedies are definitely a thing, but tbh I’d still consider Alan Wake 2 an outright horror even with the lighter stuff! Very spooky elements, with great writing and story crafting. Bonus points if you play Remedy’s other games for the Easter eggs
If you’re looking for a more schlocky horror experience, give Resident Evil 8 a try! Extremely fun to play with a story that would be kinda ‘eh’ if the performances didn’t elevate it to cult-following b-movie perfection.
Subnautica would be a good game to transition from the end of summer to the beginning of fall. Spooky atmosphere where you play (almost) entirely underwater.
Crow Country came out earlier this year and definitely capitalizes on PS1 era horror games. In that vein also, Signalis is an excellent cerebral sci-fi horror.
Idk why the tv show would have gotten them any grace? As far as I know, all they did was let the property be bought and used by Amazon. Todd Howard executive produced, but that’s not saying much. The show has nothing to do with them as a studio. They just lucked into a team who had something interesting planned with the IP.
Previews for the Elden Ring DLC have just been released! Lots of journalists and popular Souls players have been to an event where they played the DLC for a few hours, giving us way more info on what to expect and things such as new weapon types and upgrade materials. This isn’t a comprehensive list, just the few that I found...
If you liked chants of shenaar, check out heaven’s vault. I think it does what chants of shenaar does, but better, and it did it years before. It was a bit strange to me to see chants of shenaar get so much hype, but have heaven’s vault stay slept on.
Funnily enough, what that review said is basically what I said in my review about chants of shenaar, except without the glowing praise. Lots of tedious running across maps and very surface level language-puzzling, whereas I don’t remember any tedium with heaven’s vault at all. I guess different strokes for different folks?
I would say, it’s such a unique and well-executed concept that I would give it a play yourself to see what you think. It’s one of those games I haven’t found a replacement for, even with chants of shenaar.
I like how their example of “moral nuance and gray areas” is just a binary choice lmao. Baldur’s Gate 3 has really ruined how I view this whole genre. I don’t know if it’s sadder for me, or companies that clearly weren’t/aren’t willing or prepared to swing at that level of nuance.
It truly was a Great Gamer Gaslighting after that anime was released. Suddenly, cyberpunk was a work of art and everyone wanted to revisit it to see places from the anime. They hadn’t even done much to fix it yet at that point, and may even have still been dealing with legal stuff from all the stuff they promised that wasn’t in the game.
The PR turn around with that game was wild to watch, it happened almost overnight. And Gamerz TM did it to themselves.
I just wish they have the man enough time to give a proper speech!! He was barely half a minute through his thank yous before they were shooing him off stage. It was so disrespectful. Let him have his moment, this is a huge deal. It’s not like he was rambling on.
All that just to make room for more fortnite ads. Disgraceful.
Truly, trying to decide between BG3 and Alan Wake 2 when voting for GOTY was like trying to pick a favorite parent, or child. Both so good, and huge achievements in unique ways. Stacked year for awards, that’s for sure!
If this isn’t coming out until 2025, I worry about how dated the graphics already look. It’s like they took the same old models/rigs and just brought them into higher definition? Idk, but something looks off about them to me. It definitely doesn’t help the $70-80 price tags that companies are trying to justify when graphics look mostly the same as they ever have.
I think we might have hit peak realism with graphics and need to lean harder into art direction.
Really? I thought the lighting and environments looked good, but the models definitely need some work. They look like clay mannequins in an HD world to me, and I feel like that’s only gonna get more exacerbated since this doesn’t come out for another 2 years.
This article makes some pretty sweeping claims about rumors being “thoroughly put to bed” based on a vague tweet about the DLC’s progress. I’m not sure it does anything of the sort, especially when the article didn’t even report on the exact question asked of this developer.
The reporter seems to take the quote and run with it a bit.
I’ve been excited for this ever since they released the promo artwork! The speculation I’ve seen is that we’ll probably see at least a trailer at the game awards, and probably a full drop by February—based on financial projections for the game released by Kadokawa (the parent company).
We shall see! I love the lore, so I can’t wait to get my hands on more of it.
So I don’t think this is a specifically Fromsoft issue. Lots of Japanese game companies struggle with that, and it seems to be because the lion’s share of Japanese gamers use consoles, not PC. So I think a lot of Japanese companies don’t have a ton of experience optimizing for PC.
Honestly, this behavior of responding to player feedback and arguing about how “it’s just because you didn’t play the game right!” is kinda unhinged.
It also, to me, really takes Bethesda’s mask off and reveals what their culture must be as a company. Based on these responses, they seem so convinced that they shit gold that they’ve stopped entertaining feedback or trying to innovate much in their games much at all. Kinda confirms some of the criticism I’ve seen of them since Fallout 4 and 76 came out.
This doesn’t read soulless corporation to me. This reads Todd Howard’s bruised ego. He’s one of the directors of the whole studio after all, and could very well be behind this decision.
Yet it still managed to be fresh and, in my opinion, make the next big leap in what rpgs are capable of. Sequels aren’t really the problem, and I don’t mind them really—in a vacuum. The bigger problem is what ‘sequels’ are in corporate speak; making minimal effort and doing the same things over and over again, trying to profit off of name recognition alone. They don’t see a franchise and think “Great, a chance to dive into this world and see all it has to offer and what makes it tick,” they see it as a chance to make maximum $$$ while not feeling like they need to do much.
I feel like Baldur’s Gate definitely deserves it, hands down, no contest. Unfortunately I think Tears of the Kingdom will win simply because more people probably played it who never played, or would even consider playing, Baldur’s Gate because it’s not a “mainstream” big-name-company AAA release.
I haven’t played it yet, sorry! That one might suffer from being released so close to the decision. The holidays are coming up so spending my extra fun bucks on that instead of games atm. I hope to play it soon though!
I’m wondering if it might suffer because it’s also a horror title, and those tend to be more niche over all? It is very cool that we’ve got two of them in the running, though! Definitely shows how the public’s attitude toward horror is changing, imo
Edit: guys, I am not saying Alan Wake 2 does or doesn’t deserve to win lol. I am not trying to insult your favorite video game. I have no opinion either way, as I have yet to play it (plan to though! It does look good). I am just trying to be realistic on each game’s chances.
I would definitely agree about Alan Wake being kind of a niche/cult game, even among people who play indies. We can only hope for a (good) new Silent Hill, but Konami hasn’t been inspiring much confidence with that in the last several years - _-
Haha, that’s okay, I was wondering why I couldn’t see it when I clicked on it! I feel like a lot of us are relearning how to treat each other on the internet here on lemmy. I know I am. Idk why, but years on reddit had me trained to say just mean things to people. It was very easy to forget that there was a person on the other side of a comment/post. Idk if that’s how it is for others, but that’s definitely how it has been going for me.
I agree with you on all points, but I guess I haven’t really seen the same meh attitudes towards it that you have? The Nintendo/Zelda fans have seemed largely rabid over it since it came out, and I wonder if there’s just so many of them that it will beat out the competition? Idk, I guess we’ll see in a couple weeks!
I hope you’re right, though, because how I felt at the end of playing ToTK was very different than when I started playing, largely due to the repetitive and aggravating game systems. It’s a real shame, because I loved the story (not the way it was presented via memories, but still)
That is an excellent point! I really hope it gets it. Out of all the games, I feel like BG3 did the most to push its genre forward in a huge way. I’m excited to see how the game awards shake out
While Take-Two is riding high on their announcement that a GTA 6 trailer is coming, its CEO has some…interesting ideas on how much video games could cost, part of a contingent of executives that believe games are underpriced, given their cost, length or some combination of the two.
Yeah, they left and the change was IMMEDIATE. Holy moly the shit show that was RDO. If you were playing that game back then, you could see the crumbling of the company happening in real time, it was wild. RDO being left to rot is my Roman empire, and I wonder if the founders feel regret at all with how their creation was treated by the company they left. Or if they just dry their tears with hundos these days?
Heck, I don’t even feel like RDR2 lived up to it’s full potential before they left, what with post-game being the most buggy and unfinished-feeling part of the whole game. It felt like it was just waiting for DLC content to be added, since it was a huge patch of map with hardly anything going on. Sigh, who knows.
I like Adam Millard - Architect of Games, as well as Power Pak. Maybe it’s basic, but I actually find that Tomato on twitch has very similar tastes in indie games as me, so I tend to keep an eye on what he’s playing from time to time. I’ve picked up some great, recs that way. Splattercat, as well.
We’ve limited ourselves to only one game per series, and of course there are many frightening adventures not included here. No list will be exhaustive, but our choices reflect a wide range of looks and styles and gameplay that will surely appeal to the fearmonger in any horror fan. If you find thrills in chills, and crave...
Yeah that was a really weird choice. It was a very mid game. I probably would have put RE 2 or 7 as long as we’re including bigger titles like Silent Hill. Heck, if they just wanted some camp on the list, RE 4 or 8 would have been good picks.

I loved Slime Rancher 2, and played the heck out of it at launch, but am trying not to play any more until full release. It feels like I ate some of the cookie dough early and now I can hardly wait for the cookies to be done, though. I can’t wait to see what they add to it in the future!
I’m playing Slay the Princess! It’s sort of like a puzzle/visual novel hybrid, where you’re trying to explore all the routes to find all the mini ‘endings’. It’s been really fun to try and work my way through each scenario, unlocking new paths to see new possibilities. The art style is this hand drawn looking sketchbook style that is super cool to watch animate, as well.
Might be a controversial statement, but I love Persona 5’s music and art design way more than I like the actual game, if I’m being honest. The anime tropiness isn’t really my thing and I’m not a huge fan of the writing, but the vibes of that game are immaculate.
I love both of those games so much. RE7 as the spooky RE experience I was too young to have when the first 2 came out, and RE8 as a campy horror movie (that spawned amazing memes on the subreddit before reddit went to shit) that is extremely fun to play. It’s also short enough that you can blast through again and again trying to beat your last time or trying out different guns… Loved it. Though it was cheesey, I did love the Winters’ story by the end—even made me tear up a lil

I loved paradise killer. They made such a cool world, and the art is incredible. I kind of enjoy that there’s no set ‘outcome’ as well, just whatever you’re able to deduce with the evidence you’re given

Try heavens vault if you haven’t already! I tried chants of sennaar, but I found it to be much less elegant and less gripping than heavens vault’s language deduction system
