I still haven’t found a completely empty planet, there is always outposts, abandoned mines or caves with space pirates or other factions. Every time I walk to a point there is like 3 more points you can just explore endlessly
No! That’s impossible! I was told by people who played less than an hour if at all that you simply can’t walk or fly anywhere and MUST fast travel everywhere.
That's false as moving away from your ship a certain distance (I think 6 or 7 km), it'll literally tell you you've reached the boundary of the area and you need to land somewhere else to get a new stretch of land.
Yeah but that’s a long walk, I usually do about three or four locations and I’m over encumbered, maybe once my ship is upgraded and can store more junk I can stay on planet longer
This particular point really annoys me, I’d love to have somewhere that actually feels remote, where I don’t have four more copies of the same mining and science outposts in visual range. No matter how large humanity has become it just doesn’t make any sense that you can’t find a single ~15km square without anything man made on it.
The best remote places I’ve found so far has been in some quest-specific areas, but even then there’s usually a facility somewhere within a kilometer of the quest location.
PC games used to be popular in Japan before Nintendo and Sony changed everything in the 90's. Seems like with Sony slowly disengaging from the Japanese market to cater to the West, PC has come in and filled that space. I'm sure Steam really pushing PC Gaming off of the desk with Big Picture Mode, Steam Deck and excellent controller support has made it much more appealing to Japanese game culture.
Sony really shot itself in the foot with how it decided to prioritize the NA and EU market over Japan. PS5s were becoming readily available in those markets but were still so rare in Japan electronic stores were still doing lotteries for a chance to buy one - and then they raised the prices when you still couldn’t even get them yet here because of shortages. They’ve only recently become available over here, but not really - the electronics store near me only has the regular PS5 and not the diskless model. And I’m not in the middle of nowhere; this is in the middle of Osaka.
I bet a lot of folks here are like me - they just got sick of waiting and started PC gaming. Thanks to the pandemic, a lot of people who didn’t have PCs at home in 2019 ended up having to get them for WFH and online classes, so PC gaming became a lot more feasible than it had been.
Computer games were popular, but from what I remember about Japan and PC gaming in the 90’s was that they didn’t usually have IBM compatible machines and used their own funky shit, which had their own funky games.
Pc has also become a better value proposition. You get more games, generally better pricing, great support for older games, and it can do more than games. You also get console or better performance with similarly priced hardware, or if you spend a lot you can probably get something better than next gen consoles will be.
That build is at $530 with discounts. Add $70 for a DualSense 2 and it’s $600.
A Digital PS5 retail is $500, so the PC here is 20% more expensive. If you get the PS5 on a discount (the compared PC is discounted), the difference could go up to about 40%.
On top of that, I guarantee you that its real world performance is not on par to that of a PS5. My own PC has better RAM, better CPU, better GPU and better SSD and it’s still not quite there.
Again, to get comparative real world performance you’ll need to spend at least as much as the console on the GPU alone.
Well that's why I said "near-equivalent", $600 vs $450 is comparable. Performance should be close to equal, I don't know what's going on with your particular setup but if your PC has a better CPU/GPU/SSD than a PS5... then it's better than a PS5. Maybe you are getting throttled by some external factor, like temperature or background processes. But I suspect you are running games at full native resolution on your PC and comparing it to console games, but "4k" is never actually "4k" on a console. They often use some tricks to run at lower resolutions using upscaling. You can do the exact same thing on PC if you wish.
Considering that DA veteran David Gaider left ages ago, I do not have much hope left for the next DA game. BioWare may have hung on a little bit longer than other EA studios, but it looks like the notorious mismanagement by EA will get it too.
What do you want us to do? We cut their funding, we forced them into layoffs, we demanded unrealistic timelines, we have zero idea of how single player games are made, we’ve mismanaged the IP and done nothing with it for a decade now - and they still won’t be profitable!
Holy fuck, this looks incredible. For context, Fat Shark have been working very hard to address the criticisms of the game at launch, and they’ve really, really listened to the community in a big way. Many concerns have been addressed already, and the two big ones left were the lack of missions (which is slowly improving, but mapmaking takes time, so I can’t be too salty on that one) and the lack of class variety. This looks like it completely addresses that last issue.
Back when the game launched I wrote a review on steam that basically said “Despite all its flaws I enjoy this game a lot and will continue to play it, but I can’t in good conscience recommend it.” Every now and I go back and ask myself if it’s time to go back and finally flip that review to a “Recommended”. Every time so far the answer has been no, not yet. This might finally be the thing that pushes it over into a yes.
I haven’t played much since launch. I liked the game, but it felt like there was still a lot missing so I figured I’d put it down and play something else. Now I’m busy with bg3 but it may be time to jump back into darktide soon.
in my late teens/early 20s this game made me aware of more conspiracy theories than i even imagined possible, and i loved it. amazing game. pretty cutting edge at the time, but it aged poorly gameplay-wise. none of the sequels came close for me. i’d buy a well-done faithful remake of this in a heartbeat
I am just curious, what makes you say it has aged poorly in terms of gameplay? I would argue it holds up pretty well, but I am also a PC/KB+M only player. I strongly dislike UI/UX that has been compromised (from my perspective) for consoles/controllers.
Agreed regarding the sequels (haven’t played the fourth one, just the 2nd and 3rd sequel); they are OK, but not that special.
I just finished Mankind Divided earlier this month. I think it has higher highs than Human Revolution but suffers from being the planned “middle game” in the trilogy. It has better gameplay than HR, some great levels and some really good side quests. Also a really well executed apartheid theme that played out really well.
I definitely recommend you playing it. It’s not gonna be OG Deus Ex, but it’s a good game.
I really need to play it. I am sure I would enjoy it. I thought Human Revolution and even Invisible War (with mods) were decent. Invisible War is fundamentally flawed due to the small maps though.
A while ago I tried it out and I can concur on it feeling clunky. To each their own, but I just have a fairly low tolerance for games not feeling smooth to play. There are a lot of games I’ve dropped in less than an hour because it just didn’t feel good to play even if I might have liked some of the ideas or systems.
I played Deus Ex for the first time like, 6 months ago and it didn’t feel particularly clunky. It’s not great, but it’s perfectly okay, and I’m someone who plays with a controller at every possible opportunity and I think BG3 is a better experience on a controller, having tried it both ways
i’m also a KB/M player, and to be honest it’s been several (many…? i don’t remember when) years since i’ve tried OG deus ex 1, and remember thinking damn this seems like a chore.
i might just need to give it another shot, with full awareness i’ll never get the same experience of playing through for the first time on windows 98.
I’ve made multiple attempts to finish Deus Ex over the years after giving up each time due to aspects of the gameplay. I would normally never give a game so many shots, but I love so many aspects of Deus Ex, I want to finish it, but I just can’t push myself to continue at certain points.
I think the biggest blockers for me is I love stealth games (thief 1 & 2 are all time favorites), and since Deus Ex does have a stealth system (though primitive), I tried to play it like a stealth game. a vanilla install means that tranq darts make enemies run around like headless chickens for a minute, and knocking people out with the baton is unreliable. Combined, stealthing is both visually comical, and realistically very frustrating to play.
I could deal with that, and I’ve tried switching it up by going more guns blazing, but the gunplay of Deus Ex is just as clunky, with slow firing weapons that deal little damage on fairly bullet spongy enemies. Combat just doesn’t feel good.
I tried mods and overhauls to see if I could rectify either of those points, which do sorta work as a bandaid. GMDX makes stealth WAY more fun by making headshots with darts work instantly, and baton-ing more reliable. With it, I was able to get all the way to France without quitting, but I think due to GMDX, I hit a massive difficulty spike where my stealth build became much less viable, and it once again just became frustrating. Perhaps a gun-build with GMDX would’ve been the winning combo.
I think my best experience was with the Revision overhaul, but by then I had started the game over so many times over so many years, I just didn’t have the appetite to get all the way back to France.
It’s a truly spectacular game in terms of story and open-ended level design, but the mechanics really are a turn-off. I wish my first playthrough had been with the Revision overhaul (though I wish it didn’t radically change the level design so much), but even still, I think it would benefit from a Nightdive style remake.
I see. Yes, stealth is in a strange position where it’s difficult to use it full time. There are multiple missions/maps where you will eventually not be able to use stealth.
I can see what you mean regarding guns being clunky. They do get more effective as you level up and get better weapons. Early game gunplay is very iffy.
But I actually like the RPG approach to gunplay and how it forces you to try and avoid direct confrontation and use a mixture of stealth and combat.
That being said, these are all fair points.
I’ve actually never tried Revision. I only use GMDX. Should try it for next play through. i feel like I need to reinstall once I clear out a major deliverable for work. :)
I didn’t mind the RPG elements of the gunplay either, it was how lame all the guns felt to use even with higher skill levels.
The shotguns take way too many rounds to down people, the smgs are pea shooters, and pistols can work ‘okay’ with headshots, but still just feel meh. I assume the sniper rifle is more effective, but I never used it much.
I wish they had made it to where low skill makes reloading and accuracy suffer greatly, but if you do manage to score a hit, it hits hard. That would make shotguns in the early game super valuable, but they could’ve still encouraged stealth and more thoughtful tactics by limiting ammo availability.
Basically the RPG and story elements combined with Tarkov style gunplay and thief-style stealth would be heaven for me.

I beat The Black Heart, Atheon, Crota, Oryx, Siva, Xol, Ghaul, Calus, Riven, Nezerac, Savathun, and The Witness, plus AlakHul, Atraks, Sepiks, Taniks, the Forsaken Baron, a bunch of Vex Gatelords and Overminds… I rediscovered 3 Dark Subclasses plus a fourth Light one and then merged them, I became an Iron Lord, a Dregden and went to Osiris’ Lighthouse in D1 and D2, healed the Traveller (twice), I witnessed my own funeral in the Corridors of Time, bringing back Saint 14, I saved and killed Rasputin and Prince/Crow, became Taken and beat Sword Logic, Vex Simulations, and Nightmares themselves: including the real world that’s four entire realities I conquered and I communed with The Long Boi In The Soup. I saw the whole story through. Anything that happens now is of lesser concern, so I can leave.
For me the big mistake started with the Dreaming City: when the world first raid changed the game for other players- I wasn’t the main character any more and canonically all the raids and boss fights after that were done by other players, and mine (canonically even!) just fantasized about it pretending I was there. Even in the very last fight against the Witness, canonically, I was just one of hundreds of thousands in a faceless army that defeated it together.
