Stop playing Nintendo games and buying Nintendo consoles. Why support a company that is so hostile to its own fanbase?

maxprime,

Because their games are so good. There is no denying that Mario games are incredible platformers with super tight controls and any Zelda game is going to be a good adventure at the very least.

That’s why pirate then, anyways.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

The latest Mario games have seemed to been quite meh for me, like out of watching gameplay of them anyway. Legend of Zelda though I’m not a Zelda fan but dang was tears of the Kingdom fun to watch, almost made me break my boycott on their products, thankfully though they’ve issued like three rounds of dmca since which has firmly solidified my decision.

ripcord,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

Have they? IMO Super Mario Odyssey is the #1 Mario game ever made (Super Mario World being #2). And Wonder is pretty good. Heck, even tbr 3d remake collection thing was pretty nice, as far as “remastered” releases go.

cattywampas, do games w Switch 2 Sales Reportedly Struggled Over The Christmas Period

I like how this article does not talk about the anti consumer practices engaged in by Nintendo, that might push some customers away from their consoles.

The average consumer does not care about this. The biggest reasons for people to not buy a Switch 2 are 1) people don’t have money and 2) lack of major first-party games. I waited months until I found a MKW bundle for $450 at a black Friday sale.

Once we get the next 3D Mario or Zelda, you can bet they will sell a lot of consoles.

Nalivai,

Also steamdeck is amazing, and a lot of people who want a handheld just chose that one

thethirdobject,

steamdeck and switch 2 don’t address the same audience at all imo

buddascrayon,

Since I’m one of the people who is on the fence about whether or not to pick up a Nintendo Switch 2 or to get myself an ROG Ally (I have $250 of gift cards for Target which don’t sell the Steam Deck) so that I can play steam games on a handheld. I heartily disagree.

And it’s Nintendo’s anti-consumer policies that is making me hesitate on the Switch 2.

scala,

They can if you install Linux on it and run a switch emu.

Nalivai,

It already comes with Linux installed, and an emulator can be setup with five button presses and thirty seconds of waiting.
The base system is setup as immutable, but /home isn’t, so aur isn’t available out of the box, but flatpacks are for example

scala,

That’s pretty rad. I don’t have one to know the nuance.

I heard it was possible to install bazzite on the SteamDecks

Nalivai,

SteamOS is an Arch Linux, basically, with some stuff pre-installed. The only big difference is that it’s installed in immutable mode, but even that is not a big deal

scala,

Thanks for the clarification. I really want to pick one up. Might wait a bit for a SD2 I’m sure is a year or two out.

Nalivai,

Not exactly, but overlap is significant. A bunch of people want Nintendo because they always did Nintendo and that’s all they know, a bunch of people know that switch is something that kids want and so they get one, sure. But a bunch of people want to play some games lying on a couch or riding a metro or sitting in a queue at a dentist, and those people will at least google what exists on the market. This is an overlapped audience, and for a lot of them steam deck will be the obviously better choice.

Lfrith,

I got a Switch because of handheld gaming and then I stopped using my Switch because I got a Deck, and my library became playable on it without having to rebuy them. And I can get cheaper games, bundles, and giveaways than on Nintendo to play on my Deck or PC. And if ARM support for steam frame makes its way to Android then I’ll be able to play those same Steam games on my phone too.

missingno,
@missingno@fedia.io avatar

I don't think that's had much of an impact when Nintendo sold more Switch 2s at launch than Valve has manufactured Steam Decks over its entire lifespan. The Steam Deck is still an enthusiast product for a niche crowd, and will likely never be in direct competition with the big three.

Nalivai,

It’s a comparatively new product, but it’s not like it’s something unsuccessful. It’s attached to Steam, that everyone who ever had a computer knows about, and everyone has a couple of games there, it’s being talked about very positively everywhere, and they’re repeatedly gained positive reputation over pro-consumer practices they regularly employ, and they somehow evading being put on blast for the child gambling industry they operate.
They’re known among gamers, which is indeed niche crowd, but also a crowd that is important here. They don’t have the cultural grasp on humanity as Nintendo, or other two, but all of them shitting the bed constantly and publicly, while Valve is catching wins all over the place.

missingno,
@missingno@fedia.io avatar

The real point here is that they don't have the ability to manufacture at the scale of the big three. It literally can't be in direct competition.

Nalivai,

It’s not set in stone. They have money, they have demand. Scaling production is a bitch and a half, but it’s not impossible to do

SpiceDealer,

Don’t get me wrong, I love my Steam Deck but it’s an extension of Desktop build not a direct Switch competitor.

Nalivai,

It’s not a direct competitor, but they occupy the same niche while being a vastly superior product.

Tollana1234567,

i suspect it also pokemon being popular, but hasnt been producing anything but slop has something to do with it too.

I’m sure a lot of customers don’t go through the hassle of having Nintendo replace their controller or simply don’t know about the policy and just buy a new one.

They did replacement for the original Switch, not sure if it will still be the case for the new one. Besides, there is no way they don’t know about hall effect sticks, yet they went with the older tech. Which means they made a business decision based on what would make them the more money, and not what would be the most resilient parts.

I don’t think I’ve ever been this disinterested in a Nintendo console and I bought the WiiU. So far we have:

  • Insane price tags: 80$ to buy games digitally? And 90$ for physical? This isn’t how you stop piracy, it’s how you start it.
  • The tech demo costs money. Why? Sure, they explained why. Just not very well.
  • That Nintendo-Denuvo deal from 2023 is still a thing. Thankfully, no games on the Switch have implemented Denuvo. With the Switch 2 coming out, I’m not certain this will remain the case.
  • Far as I can tell, they did next to nothing to fix the joycon drift. The one big problem with the Switch 1.

Also, the launch titles are kind of sparse. Most are rehashes of existing Switch 1 games, with two or three exceptions. Not for me, I guess.

TheLowestStone,
@TheLowestStone@lemmy.world avatar

@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Which one is that? Mario Kart?

HobbitFoot,

I feel like that with a lot of gaming, though. It feels like a lot of the industry has progressed where AAA gaming isn’t worth it while A and AA games are just as, if not more, entertaining.

It feels more like Nintendo is building the engine for the next decade, but I’m still happy with last decade’s engine.

zeca,

seems to me like AAA games always were about demonstrating new game technologies, showcasing a new graphics engine or something, not about entertaining/fun games. Like that Crysis franchise from around 2010, everyone wanted to have a pc that could play crysis, but nobody actually wanted to play that game.

HobbitFoot,

AAA used to be about creating fun games. The Super Mario and Mario Kart games, for instance, are AAA games.

It just happens to be that you can create a lot of complex and fun games today without pushing the edge of technology. That wasn’t always the case.

Nintendo is such a shit company now. I’d be surprised if they ever innovate again. They’ll just sit around and sue and release mediocre to bad bullshit.

rocky1138,

Duamerthrax, (edited )

Half disagree. They’ve taken a lot of risks in the past with designs that other companies wouldn’t have. Things that didn’t always pan out well and became the butts of jokes.

But yes, they’ve been a litigious company with ties to the Yakuza that people frequently forget as well.

JCreazy, do games w Nintendo Issues Multiple DMCAs On The Modding Site 'GameBanana'

Outside of a few first party titles (Even those have been lackluster), Nintendo doesn’t really have much going for it lately does it? I know the Switch 2 is coming which I have no desire for. Hell, my Switch hasn’t been touched in a couple years. So many other options that Nintendo no longer sits on the pedestal it once did.

MajorHavoc,

Switch 2 is coming which I have no desire for.

I was hyped for the Switch 2 until the latest round of bullshit lawsuits. Now I’m going to pass.

I’ll be sure to buy an emulator from China pre-loaded with every Switch 2 title in about a decade, though.

JCreazy,

I honestly care more to see what comes out of a Switch 2 emulator than what games it will play.

Ashtear,

It’s the typical end-of-generation lull right now, but even with that, the brand is broadly, wildly popular. The Switch is approaching the PS2’s sales record. Throw in all the money from MTX now and it’s surely the most profitable venture ever in traditional video games.

That’s precisely why Nintendo can afford to burn up goodwill with trash like this move.

Pika,
@Pika@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ve been the same way with my switch, I haven’t touched it for probably a year and a half outside of a short bit when tears of the Kingdom launched where I replayed some of breath of the wild and a small portion of Animal Crossing, I agree

They had been falling for at least 4 years now, I had already strayed from doing anything on the switch from lack of appeal, but their crackdown on dmca with the yuzu Community was the final straw for me, I didn’t even use the emulator myself but I’ve always heavily embraced emulation and the ability to Tinker with stuff that you purchase and that just didn’t sit right with me.

It was also around that time that I actually read into what happened with Gary Bowser, and that made me sick to my stomach, because it was essentially the equivalent of Prosecuting a cashier for the crimes that the CEO did.

Honestly even if they were still prospering I wouldn’t recommend the products, it’s hard enough to recommend their product to customers in the first place due the platform restrictions and the fact that they just keep regurgitating the three same IP over and over again, and that’s without the active hostilities towards their fanbase

deus,

I couldn’t disagree more. Other than Pokémon their first-party releases have been pretty much flawless this generation, it’s arguably the strongest lineup of games any Nintendo console has ever seen. There’s a reason the Switch is currently in route to become the best selling console of all time. That’s not an excuse to their legal team shenanigans, of course, but credit where credit is due.

VaultBoyNewVegas,

I’m sure the fact that Nintendo systems sell well with families and has been massively cheaper than a ps5/Xbox series x plus been available for much longer and there’s been very little stock problems unlike the ps5 has nothing to do with why its one of the top selling systems… Comments like yours always read like propaganda as they never mention other factors than games.

deus,

Why, just because I decided to leave my honest opinion instead of trashing Nintendo like every other comment here? I can see where people are coming from with their complaints but to say Nintendo’s games have been disappointing is absurd. Yes, there are other factors contributing to these sales numbers, and none of them would matter at all if the Switch didn’t also have great games on it.

The weird part is apparently Canada got hit by this as well.

I’d be curious what those “market conditions” are that screw over our northern neighbors too 🤔

yggstyle, (edited )

The market conditions are nobody kicking Nintendo’s lawyers in the teeth and telling them to piss off… regardless of jurisdiction.

Follow that up with the consumer base clamoring for a gimpsuit shaped like the switch 2 and you get this result.

“Yes corporate daddy, punish me harder”

Edit: it would appear some people are unfamiliar with Nintendo’s rather questionable actions. Or their lawyers are on Lemmy. One of those.

LettyWhiterock,
@LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world avatar

No dude your comment just makes no sense.

yggstyle,

I can break it down:

Why is this happening to us (the consumer)?

Asked by the consumer who has broken records buying the switch 2 with the batshit insane clause: “We can brick your console for any reason and are denying your rights to how and where you can sell your purchased games.”

That’d be the gimpsuit.

Shall I detail the number of times nintendont has overstepped it’s legal rights and trampled on those of developers, consumers, and frequently their own employees?

Nintendo’s lawyers know no boundaries. They frequently get apologists making excuses for them while they force their will on whomever they please. What they need is a solid kick in the teeth and to be told to fuck right off.

Why are they jacking prices up? Why are they inserting assinine clauses in user agreements?

Because people just love the abuse apparently. That’s certainly what the market appears to be saying: “Yes daddy N. punish me harder.”

I believe that summarizes the intent of my original statement sufficiently.

I didn’t think it required that much thought… but apparently I was mistaken.

LettyWhiterock,

NuXCOM_90Percent,

I think Switch 2 is more likely. Which run their sizzle reel in April?

I obviously don’t know their financials, but I am going to assume a month or two isn’t going to change things all that much for Team Cherry.

So they can either launch for Switch 1 (and everything else) and be “just another game”. Or they can launch for Switch 2 (and everything else) and be the ONLY game. Plenty of “nindie” games did exactly that during the, quite frankly disastrous, first year or so of the Switch 1 and it was amazing for their studios.

Launching as part of the XBOX Boy or whatever MS calls their handheld is also an option. But MS is almost definitely going to take advantage of the albatross that was the Series S to have significant cross compatibility.
