echoplex21, do games w Ayaneo's New Handheld Looks Like A 2023 Nintendo DS Successor

The handheld PC market has been booming. There’s so many cool products that have been coming out. Personally I’m sticking with more established companies like Steam, Asus, and Lenovo due to being able to get better support , but the creativity of these devices have been incredible to see.

My personal favorite has to be the GPD Win 4 Pro. Brings back the PSP nostalgia and it seems more pocketable than other ones. I’m buying the Lenovo Legion Go but if money was no factor I’d buy the GPD to take on the go.

I always thought Pokemon regions being inspired by real-world regions/countries was one of its neater aspects.

For those who don’t know:

  • Kanto: Kanto region, Japan (Tokyo and surrounding area)
  • Johto: Kansai region, Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, etc)
  • Hoenn: Kyushu island and Okinawa, Japan
  • Sinnoh: Hokkaido island, Japan
  • Unova: New York City metro area, USA
  • Kalos: France
  • Alola: Hawaii, USA
  • Galar: the UK
  • Paldea: the Iberian peninsula (Spain, Portugal)

Modding is not a commercial venture, Nintendo! Get fucked.

IMO that‘s how actual art‘s supposed to be made. You don‘t just churn it out on a conveyer belt. It‘s a 2D game so it‘s not like technological progress will force them to jump engines over and over again. I‘m not worried.

Ahh I see, Nintendo has discovered the internet.

FooBarrington, do games w It's Been Five Long Years Since Hollow Knight: Silksong Was Officially Announced | Nintendo Life

I’m happy they are taking their time - if Silksong comes close to the quality of Hollow Knight it will be a great game, and they definitely have a chance to make it even better.

I do however wish there was just a bit more communication. Not even release dates or anything, just a small “things are coming along nicely” every couple of months, maybe with tiny peeks at new art. Their official channels have been pretty much dead for years now.

TIMMAY,

Agreed. I trust team cherry as HK is one of the greatest gaming experiences Ive ever had in my life but the lack of communication is tough. Same with Fromsoftware and Patrick Rothfuss lol please end my suffering pat

Exact same boat! Pass me an oar

At this point I only check in on the status of book 3 like twice a year.

I recently got back into HK and finished it finally (NKG is sick) so I can’t help but check on Silksong every week. Any day now we’ll get news… 🤡

TIMMAY,

Its a really odd situation with the kingkiller books because they were such a massive influence on my childhood and now im in my 30’s just still waiting to find out what happens next

Katana314,

I think the process of taking your time and flipping off the marketing managers is a good one; but I’ve also seen signs that if development takes TOO long, the internal creative momentum can kind of grind to a halt or even be overtaken as they become outdated against advances in game design.

The developers are generally gamers too, and the passion for development is often fueled by excitement for the concept - excitement that can fade the same way as with fans (granted, they have to be more patient than most fans). Sticking with something too long can even lead to low confidence in that concept.

I can be patient, I just hope their approach hasn’t lead to internal burnout.

What kind of games do these run?

mephiska,

This is the first I’ve seen of it but I’ll guess it’s a retro gaming emulator handheld, android or Linux based. So it’ll run whatever its chips are powerful enough to run.

ultrasquid,
@ultrasquid@sopuli.xyz avatar

This is from Ayaneo, who make mostly high-end handheld PCs. This one is using a similar chip to the ROG Ally, so its a Windows handheld, and quite a powerful one.

I wouldn't say it's entirely worthless, but sure, I'd still far prefer that to someone mindlessly speculating with no reference of how accurate the info is

I heard that Pocket Pair use relatively questionable methods to develop their games such as AI and literal copy-paste for their concept art which they then just alter.

But its more hearsay than everything else I guess.

Hawk,

People have supposedly ripped several models from both games and some seem to line up nearly 100%, while others obviously use parts of the model.

But yeah, I can’t say I checked if they’re valid videos or made to enrage people.

Please don’t post hearsay. If you want to post something incriminating, take a second to verify it first. This is how bad rumors propagate, and as a society today it’s a problem we’re facing like never before. Do your part!

toasteecup, do nintendo w Nintendo Is "Evolving" Into An Entertainment Company, According To Doug Bowser

I had a bit of a rant about this a while back when I was playing Splatoon with friends.

The crux of the argument is this “if we stop trying to look at Splatoon as a good game and instead look at it as an entertaining game, the issues we run into make sense. The bugs glitches and bad balancing issues don’t matter as much from an entertainment standpoint. You get in you play and you’re entertained. Even if the match drops you can get back in an be entertained. It doesn’t mean it’s a good game, but it is entertaining.”

My friend’s and I are now freaking out about my prophetic words.

DharkStare, (edited )

I have to ask then: what’s the difference between a good game and an entertaining game?

From my perspective, games exist to be entertaining so if a game is entertaining then it is a good game. I don’t know what other metric would be used to determine if a game is good.

toasteecup,

Unfortunately that’s the part of the rant I don’t remember. I had a pretty decent definition for both a good game and an entertaining game and why they aren’t exactly the same thing but I also had a decent amount of beer that night.

If I think of it I’ll reply to your comment again with the update.

theneverfox,

Mobile games, case in point. They often aren’t designed to be good or even fun, they’re designed to maximize playtime over the long term

That means you start off making it fun and easy to advance, but then you start to back off on the rewards and make them grind and wait more and more. It’s the Facebook technique

I just cant support Nintendo anymore, Sony burned their bridge with me after terrible support of the Vita and PSVR and hardware issues with the PS4, Microsoft seems hell-bent on becoming a third party.

I have a Steam Deck and honestly its the only platform i feel good about the future of. I thought I was done with PC gaming in 2013, Im getting older and I much prefer the simplicity of the console experience, but its looking like the ONLY choice rn.

Release a SteamOS console and save us Valve, youre our only hope.

Chozo,

Release a SteamOS console and save us Valve, youre our only hope.

Isn't that what the Steam Box was?

RightHandOfIkaros,

Yep, Steam Machines were basically that, but just a PC that ran SteamOS. I think they could come back to moderate success now where they kinda failed before.

BaroqueInMind,

No one bought them before, and since literally nothing has changed since then besides graphics card prices, no one will continue to buy them if they get re-released.

RightHandOfIkaros,

If their pricing and performance is comparable to premium consoles, and your whole Steam Library automatically carries over, I definitely think more people would be interested.

BaroqueInMind,

What’s crazy was that they performed better than consoles at the time compared to price, and people still didn’t buy them. So no, you’re wrong people won’t change and it still wouldn’t sell

ripcord,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

Things have changed quite a bit since then.

BaroqueInMind,

Since you didn’t elaborate what or why, then no you’re wrong nothing has changed.

ripcord,
@ripcord@lemmy.world avatar

Well, for one, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of compatible software, which has been a big factor in the success of the Steam Deck and was a big complaint about the original Steam Box/Machine.

BaroqueInMind,

You say this but provide zero evidence of this being true. The amount of compatible software has remained overall the same.

In fact, there is data that compatibility has dropped due to advances in proprietary Direct X protocol being way more efficient over Vulkan or OpenGL

ipkpjersi,

Steam Deck and other handhelds like Lenovo Legion Go, ASUS ROG Ally (I know, their horrible customer support…), Odin 2, RG556, Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, etc make portable gaming better than ever tbh.

haui_lemmy,

Playing steam games on the TV has become really good. I played through most of control over steamlink and besides my ps4 controler losing power too often - which has nothing to do with steam, it has been a blast.

Games that can be played with controller work great on the tv.
