Your favorite video game doesn't need a remake | Digital Trends (www.digitaltrends.com) angielski

Curious about y’alls opinions on this. I like the idea of getting new people to experience an older game by aligning it to modern graphics and accessibility standards. But capitalizing on nostalgia with quick updates to that make it look modern rather than making new games seems like just more of studios trying to squeeze...

@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Are people asking for a Bloodborne remake? I always thought they just wanted a port to systems other than PS4. Which I still think Sony should do.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

True for most screw-ups in gaming, yes, but not this time. The studio in question, Paradox Tectonic missed three Early Access deadlines. It sounds like Tectonic bit off more than they could chew. I like bashing execs as much as the next guy, but if you miss three deadlines at any job, you’re probably getting the axe.

Oh shit, that was Sylux from Prime 3’s secret ending. I loved the Prime games, I’m pretty hyped about this.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Probably what he meant, yes, but that’s not a sequel. I would even hesitate to call it a spiritual successor. It’s basically just Civ in spaaaaace.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Ooh, I’m always down for some spying. Especially if high tech toys are involved. Here’s hoping it’ll be good.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

This comment should be somewhere near the top. My reaction was similar to DebatableRaccoon’s.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Same here. Terry didn’t even bother to change up the artstyle. Forget being inspired by something, his game looks like a straight-up copy. What a tool.

It would be even better if they commited to not installing rootkits on your PC.

Mat Piscatella, executive director of analysis firm Circana, said that monthly, non-mobile, video-game subscription spending in the US “has been flat to low single-digit growth” since the middle of 2021.

Good. Now that we’ve established that the subscription-based videogame market is pretty much saturated with very little potential for growth, can we please stop shoveling out all this live service crap? It didn’t work for Bioware, it didn’t work for Rocksteady Studios and it didn’t work for Arkane Austin. Stop it.

I’m frankly astounded by the sheer ineptitude on display here. I don’t know what’s happening at Microsoft, but whatever it is, it’s insanity. How tone deaf can you be? And this is only days after the gamepad fiasco.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Very nicely explained, I find myself in agreement with you. This makes a lot of sense and would explain their current behaviour. So, with this in mind, if I look at Microsoft’s statement from the article, it now reads slightly differently. Before, it was just their statement verbatim: “we need games like Hi-Fi rush”, but now it’s “we need games like Hi-Fi Rush, but a hell of a lot cheaper”. All because of GamePass. Dude, I am so sick of subscription services.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

All that talk about how Xbox is investing in the Japanese market and then they close the one prominent Japanese studio that they own. The same one that, as the article points out, made Hi-Fi Rush which was “a break out hit”. What the hell, Microsoft.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

So, it’s an announcement for an announcement? We don’t know anything about it, other than that it’s in development.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

How about the Swiitch? You get the roman numeral 2 in there and the name’s similar enough to the original Switch, so customers will be confused as to whether this is a new console or an iteration of the current one. Just like the Wii U!

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

So glad this is gaining traction. I like playing older games from time to time and I am NOT down with capricious companies killing games just because they decided it doesn’t make financial sense to patch out their DRM. The Crew was sold as a good, not a service. They should either patch out the online requirement or give users their money back.

I can imagine the prospect not being attractive to Ubisoft, but who cares about Ubisoft anyway.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

It feels like everybody, here are just a few examples. And if that doesn’t cut it for you, Steam has a whole-ass tag for boomer shooters.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

I know, but just let me have my old man yells at cloud moment.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh, they’re definitely better, no question. But by that definition, wouldn’t that make them Boom Shooters?

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Dammit! Upvoted with great begrudgement.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

No, you’re not. But I like you anyway.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

I would love to see that take place, so sign me up for the Church of the Boomest Shooter. My only real concern is where do we go from boomest?

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Hey, at least it’s shining.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

It wasn’t? This is what Wikipedia says:

“OK boomer” or “okay boomer” is a catchphrase and internet meme that has been used by members of the Millennial generation and Generation Z (born between the early 1980s and the early 2010s) to dismiss or mock attitudes typically associated with baby boomers – people born in the two decades following World War II.

Who was it targeted at then?

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

It does roll off the tongue nicely, I have to admit.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Get off my lawn and leave me to my prune juice.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh, I’m liking this take. Get ready for “Z Shooters” and “Alpha Shooters”.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Raging against new slang is just gonna make us more out of touch, and intensify the feeling of being old, so I just accept it and try to keep up.

NEVER! I choose to embrace my inner geriatric and complain about kids these days and their hippy-hop music.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Okay, then riddle me this: which shooter DOESN’T go boom?

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar
onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s a good one. True enough, Splatoon doesn’t go boom, it goes splat.

onlooker,

Are action RPGs okay? If so, Ys: Oath in Felghana. It’s a remake of Ys III, which is also available on other platforms. However! The PSP version has features that other platforms do not, the main two being voice acting (other ports just have beeps when text is displayed) and a whole new mechanic, which is reminiscent of Final Fantasy’s Limit Breaks.

One potential caveat, though: this is probably the hardest entry in the series. Fights are hard, but never cheap. If you’re okay with that, you should have a good time.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

With all the negative press this game has been getting, they might as well rename it to Suicide Squad Kill Rocksteady Studios.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Incorrect. Last I checked, theft is depriving the original owner of their product or service. When it comes down to it, piracy is essentially making an illegal copy, meaning the original is still there.

Couple of issues with this list:

  • OP said their son in his friends use Xbox Series X/S, so that effectively removes Krunker and Minecraft Java Edition. That said, I believe Minecraft Bedrock Edition is available for XSX.
  • Stardew Valley is great, but the son’s social group has 5 people. Stardew Valley only supports up to 4.
  • Cities Skylines does not have multiplayer.

Can’t speak for Dorfromantik, because I haven’t played it, but the rest seem like great choices.

Players who don't like survival games as a genre: Which survival games are your personal exceptions, which ones have you enjoyed nonetheless and why? angielski

Personally, I really don’t like most of these games due to the tedium and frustration that comes with hunger/thirst mechanics. Most of the exceptions that I do actually like either make up for it through something else that elevates the experience enough - or they either don’t have these mechanics or allow for players to...

@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

Does Terraria count? If so, Terraria.

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

You should! The beginning may be a bit slow, but before long you’ll be building sweet bases or exploring the underground or doing whatever you like, really. It also has a ridiculous amount of content with even more to come next year, apparently. Also, no hunger/thirst mechanics! Like yourself, I don’t like 'em. Terraria has HP and MP, that’s it.

Oof. Shots fired. Good. Unity could use a couple more salvos.

Denuvo security is now on Switch, including new tech to block PC Switch emulation (www.videogameschronicle.com) angielski

The first of the tools Denuvo is offering to Switch developers is Nintendo Switch Emulator Protection, a “revolutionary technology to protect games launching on Nintendo Switch from piracy”....

onlooker,
@onlooker@lemmy.ml avatar

As a Switch owner, fuck this. This is reason enough for me to stop buying games on the Switch and go full piracy/emulation mode. I don’t have any Denuvo games on my PC and I am not having any on my Switch.

Oh, my poor, poor wallet. I loved C:S and this just looks better in every way. Well, except Linux support, but hopefully Steam Play will be able to mitigate that.
