Matriks404, (edited ) do games w The Weekly 'What are you playing?' Discussion - 18-09-2023

Finished first Quake recently (EXCELLENT game, still very much playable even after nearly 3 decades, definitely 9/10), and currently playing Perdition’s Gate, it is kinda unofficial Doom 2 expansion released in 1996, and it had chance to be included in Final Doom (which are two additional official episodes for Doom 2), but ultimately it was decided against it.

Perdition’s Gate is kinda interesting as it has some unique elements and I genuinely enjoyed it even though there are probably much better Mega WADs nowadays, later maps are too short though, and it looks like they have made them only to accomplish 32 maps total like in the original game. Secret maps are also… odd… definitely not bad, but… just odd (and disappointing to some extent I guess), although I am not going to spoil them for you. Also the locations for secrets are also weird.

Interesting and odd is I think the best description for this Expansion/WAD.

Ugh, CAD. I thought that webcomic died a decade ago.

I’m surprised you can write a 14-year-old’s name on your crotch and send her a dick pic on your own forum, yet years later people still find your comics and share them.

Shepy,

Fucking astounding isnt it. Where’s cancel culture when you need to rid the world of a nonce? :P

hedgehog,

This is the first I’ve heard of that, and after searching the most I found was “This was alleged on 4chan but that’s it,” without even a link to the archived 4chan conversation. It’s kinda hard to take a complaint seriously when 4chan is the primary source. Can you share anything more substantive?

Basically every complaint about him that I’ve read is summarized at …shoutwiki.com/…/Ctrl%2BAlt%2BDel, or on (choose your reddit mirror): r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/3v3uau/what_exactly_did_tim_buckley_do_besides_make_a/ and tbh that should be enough on its own for most people to stop reading his webcomics

ech,

Aside from the alleged child abuse, which if true is horrid, I don’t really get people’s problems with content they don’t like. That wiki page is so overboard, it’s absurd. What exactly is it about the content that they can’t simply ignore it? Did Tim Buckley go to their home personally and Clockwork Orange every issue into their brain? Just let people make what they want (within reason), and if you (the figurative you) don’t like it, just ignore it and go find something you do. No need to add so much negativity into the world.

hedgehog,

I agree with you, generally - so many people need to internalize “It’s okay to not like things, but don’t be a jerk about the things you don’t like.”

With Buckley in particular, much of the criticism is like that, but I think that due to particular things he’s allegedly done - the above sexual assault of a child, for one; the more verifiable (not that I’ve verified them, but I’m sure other people have) claims about him banning people from his own forums for various reasons, like providing (allegedly) constructive criticism of his comics; his generally being rude to many of his fans and critics, etc. - that almost everyone is less likely to defend someone from criticism they’d otherwise speak up about when that person has already earned their ire in some other way. As a result it kinda snowballs and you get pages like that one with almost nobody willing to speak in his defense.

ech,

To be clear, I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve criticism. I have no love for Buckley. He probably deserves most of it. But spending so much effort on wiki pages like that and on thinking about content you simply don’t like is so pointless. And it’s not just CAD hate. This kind of mentality permeates the internet and seems to latch onto everything. It’s so tiring to see.

Erk,

90% of the badwebcomics wiki exists for no reason but to shit on someone for daring to put themselves out in public where others can see them. I completely agree. There’s the odd creator on there that fully deserves criticism for genuine assholery and abuse, but mostly it’s like “this guy makes a very cringy comic, jump him!” bullshit.

ech,

Yeah, I gathered it was edgy bs by the goatse logo. It’s just so dumb and disheartening to consider that nonsense like this could discourage someone from following their passion, just because sadsacks feel compelled to drag everyone down to their level.

EnglishMobster,

Google is shit nowadays, sadly - it used to be you could Google “Tim Buckley Jackie” and see the picture yourself. A girl’s name written on his junk near his pubes.

It got out on his forum and he banned anyone who mentioned it. He wound up doing a complete purge of the CAD forums and got rid of half his mod staff. It’s not just a 4chan thing; it was all over the internet like… 15 years ago. (Maybe longer?)

I’ve had the unfortunate displeasure of having seen it one time, so I can vouch that it exists. I can’t find it nowadays, but I can find people referencing it:

Etc.

If you do the search now you can see that Google removed some results “for legal reasons”, which is likely the EU “right to be forgotten” law being used to scrub it. But it used to exist and was well-known for anyone who was on the internet in the long long ago times…

wahming,

@Dasnap@lemmy.world avatar

Probably COVID, so I’d add 2 years to each of these dates for possible releases if a project hasn’t been cancelled.

I’d love an Oblivion remaster next year. Although I have a sneaking suspicion the Skyblivion project might end up being the more polished experience.

Annoyed_Crabby,

From looking at skyrim remaster, oblivion/fo3 just gonna be texture update and some lighting/shader change, that’s it.

XTornado,

Well I would expect some patches at least for fallout 3 as that was more broken with current PCs but who knows.

Fades,

And the textures won’t even be that much better, current mods will outperform visually no question. Just a fucking cashgrab

Annoyed_Crabby,

100% sure they will use uncompressed og texture.

99.999999% they gonna get external dev to remaster it so the art direction will be incoherent and jarring, 0.000001% they get modder that does all the cool texture/shader mod onto the team.

Cethin,

It could be. It doesn’t say what studio is working on it. If it’s BSG then yeah. If it’s contracted out to another studio then I wouldn’t be surprised to see a version with the newer rendering tech and things like that.

MxM111,

Why would Covid delay game by that much after Covid?

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever,

Part of it is because games have multi-year development cycles. And, for most of covid, WFH/remote was not something people really understood how to do (having kids around did not help). So basically all games lost 1-2 years of development time.

And for a major studio (like MS), you have limited support teams and resources. So if Ghostwire needed one of the support studios, DOOM Year Zero (!?!?!?!) would have to wait and so forth.

And then you just have release windows. It matters less in a digital distribution world, but you want your big games to hit for holidays and known good selling weeks. So if Starfield is end of Summer, DOOM can’t be.

And as you add on delays you need to improve the game because something else came out with a similar bit and you will come across as “derivative”.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Most companies froze during the start of COVID. During the first few months, we didn’t know if COVID was spread through air or by blinking. Companies scrambled for WFH, trying to keep workers alive while other companies scrambled to create 6-ft distances. People died. Less people went out to buy things.

This went on for a full year at minimum.

MxM111,

You would think that software companies could switch really easy.

Viking_Hippie,

You would think so, but for an industry where almost all of the work is location-agnostic, they sure love forcing people to work in offices and cubicles.

Cethin,

I think it’s part Covid but also part that they just underestimated how much time they needed. Clearly it still could have baked a little longer. It feels like it was only fully playable at the very end because so much QoL stuff needs to be added, in my opinion. I think it would have been smart to at least have the mod tools ready at launch, or at least weeks later. It looks like it’s going to be months for those though.

Stovetop,

Well we all knew that much at least. It was originally announced to be released in 2022 but they pushed it back almost a full year to 2023. Guessing when development slowed due to salvage work needed for Fallout 76 and then likely a mandate from Microsoft to polish it more before release.

Good, I hope this means we get even more turn-based RPGs again. I’m 100% fine with people enjoying the new action-oriented RPGs like Final Fantasy has become, but I love turn based so much more. I didn’t like that it felt like there couldn’t be both on the market. There is just something way more enjoyable to me about turn-based as opposed to mashing buttons and twitchy moves like I’m playing God of War.

I agree, I’m glad games like this (and baldur’s gate!) are enjoying so much success and attention right now. It’s better for everyone if we have a variety of polished experiences in different genres.

That being said I don’t often find myself enjoying turn based games lol. Even going back to the super nintendo, I massively preferred Secret of Mana (with it’s real time combat system) to Final Fantasy. There’s just something extremely satisfying to me about a well done action-oriented RPG, where you feel like your skills are improving alongside your character’s.

“Well done” is not to be overlooked, of course. I was quite disappointed with final fantasy 16, as it truly did just feel like mashing buttons

Nefyedardu, (edited )

Final Fantasy moving away from turn-based because it's "outdated" is peak Square silliness. Have they ever heard of chess, card games, board games, DnD, Civilization, Persona, Dragon Quest, XCOM, Pokemon, Darkest Dungeon? If anything, DMC-style character action games are far more niche.

turtlepower,

Uh… I hope they’ve heard of Dragon Quest. They own it.

hogart,
@hogart@feddit.nu avatar

But so they know that they own it? That’s the question here!

Nefyedardu,

Funny enough Yoshi P was the one that said turn-based was outdated and he's worked on DQ before but only the MMO, arcade games, Minecraft clone and a Wii FPS thing. I think it's pretty obvious he just doesn't like the genre. DQ11 was the breakthrough hit in the West and he had nothing to do with it.

thekidxp,

I’m really worried about the new dragon quest. It’s possibly my favorite series and I’m concerned that 12 is going to be action and not turn based.

turtlepower,

I haven’t seen anything about it. Is there info out that makes you think this?

HawlSera,

I believe spinoffs like “Dai” and “Heroes” will be action based, but the main game and “Monsters” will be turn based

BenVimes,

I seem to remember them being surprised by the success of Bravely Default, not expecting a deliberately old-school RPG to appeal to modern audiences.

The cynical part of me believes this is performative on their part - they know a game like that will be popular, but it won’t be the most popular thing ever and they won’t make all the money. So, they try to push bigger games that are more easily monetized in hopes that people will just forget their own preferences.

Buddahriffic,

Could also just be their own tastes evolving. I used to love turn-based combat RPGs and the RTS genre but I’m kinda over both of them now. If game makers lose passion for those kinds of games, then the “it won’t appeal” might even be more of a “I’m not into it, so if I do make it, it won’t be very appealing” than a “no one wants this kind of game”.

idunnololz,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

I’m kind of sad that the RTS genre kind of died. I like RTS games and I hope they can make a comeback one day.

Aztechnology,

I stopped liking final fantasy once they abandoned it… Literally last game I played was 12.

ABCDE,

It turned me off the FFVII remake, which is a shame as I really wanted to experience the original but in a modern style. I guess I may actually boot the original up instead; I wonder if there are mods to make it more playable.

Nefyedardu,

I've got the benefit of nostalgia I guess, but I played through the original a few months ago for probably the fifth time in my life and still enjoyed myself. The main things that has aged is the ugly character models, this mod can improve those. Might want to look as some of these as well. You want to play through the original+crisis core first before the remake for... reasons.

RobertOwnageJunior,

Especially with the huge boost DnD had in the last few years.

hogart,
@hogart@feddit.nu avatar

Yeah it’s far more relaxing to play a jrpg with good music, nice looking environments when I can actually listen to the music and look at the world instead of focusing on the enemies tells and dodgeroll at the exact perfect moment. Nothing wrong with perfect dodgerolls. But I don’t want them in all my games.

HeyJoe,

I thought this was already understood after the success of octopath traveler… but here we are.

OptiZonion,

I have the feeling there are like 20 turn-based rpg going out every month, it’s one of the most seeked genre out there. Sure, AAA titles kind of strayed away from it but the AA and indie markets are still very much into them.

skullone,

MMOs don’t feel practical these days with so many games to play. Who has that much time to dedicate to one game?

I’m not sure if the game market has changed, or just my perspective of time. Probably both.

I appreciate the sentiment around preservation, but there’s an argument to be made that if you make something, you should get to decide if you want to destroy it. Banksy did something like this recently by destroying one of his pieces of art when it went up for auction.

NinjaYeti76,
@NinjaYeti76@mastodon.social avatar

@Kushan so you're saying they should be able to take your money and then destroy what you bought with out any sort of warning or compensation right? I strongly disagree with you if that's what you're saying.

Not_Alec_Baldwin,

This is more like if it was successfully sold at auction, and THEN banksy destroyed it after taking the money.

Kushan,
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

No no, not at all - I agree with you, if you sell something to someone you shouldn’t be able to just take it back arbitrarily.

However, OP is talking about forcing companies to open source something they created - and while I love open source and am a big supporter of it, I don’t think that’s necessarily right either.

Lev_Astov,
@Lev_Astov@lemmy.world avatar

The Banksy example is also bad because they didn’t take anything away from anyone, just sold something that would change form after sale. And they knew that this stunt would only increase the art’s value going in.

Chloepoke,

I agree with your sentiment that a creator should have control over their work. However. I do feel that an art piece which can only exist in one form is different from commercial mass media. Mainly because you start getting in to an “original vs a copy” territory. While I believe an owner of something should have control over copyrights…once someone legally owns a “copy” of something that copy should be theirs since the owner made the mass media thing for the public to consume I believe the public should, at some point, have a say in the future trajectory of the product, after all it is still the public who “decide” if a product is good and will be remembered, and they even “decide” the value of the product as well.

Art is usually only made for a select few to own…it is “artisanal”…meanwhile video games are made for a much larger group…

Draconic_NEO,
@Draconic_NEO@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t believe in that at all, human lives and the feelings associated with them are finite, the appreciation of art lasts as long as the canvas does which can be hundreds to thousands of years depending on what it is. The feelings they feel as the artist aren’t significant on that time-frame and whatever respect I have for them is irrelevant in that context. I believe in preservation even against the will of creators because it benefits future generations, for the same reason historical knowledge does and their feelings today do not.

People have told me I’d feel different if it was my art but not really (I find that argument incredibly presumptuous and condescending which is why I’m acknowledging them here before anyone has the chance to make them as some kind of comeback), I recognize the value of art and the fact that just like these other artists I won’t be around forever either.

Flax_vert,

That’s completely different? Also the owner still had an art piece. Just a destroyed one. That was arguably worth more.

plus using a chat-only model would be real tragic as it’s a significant downgrade from what they already had

brsrklf,

Doesn’t even take a change of service provider to get there.

Replika had what had very obviously become a virtual mate service too, until they decided “love” wasn’t part of their system anymore. Probably because it looked bad for investors, as happened for a lot of AI-based services people used for smut.

So a bunch of lonely people had their “virtual companion” suddenly lobotomized, and there’s nothing they could do about it.

SCB,

I always thought replika was a sex chatbot? Is/was it “more” than that?

brsrklf,

It’s… complicated.

At first the idea was it’d be training an actual “replica” of yourself, that could reflect your own personality. Then when they realized their was a demand for companionship they converted it into virtual friend. Then of course there was a demand for “more than friends”, and yeah, they made it possible to create a custom mate for a while.

Then suddenly it became a problem for them to be seen as a light porn generator. Probably because investors don’t want to touch that, or maybe because of a terms of servce change with their AI service provider.

At that point they started to censor lewd interactions and pretend replika was never supposed to be more than a friendly bot you can talk to. Which is, depending on how you interpret what services they proposed and how they advertized them until then, kind of a blatant lie.

Surreal, (edited )

LLM is capable of role-playing, character.ai for example can get into the role of any character after being trained. The sound is just text-to-speech, character.ai already includes that, though if a realistic voice is desired, it would need to be generated by a more sophisticated method, which is already being done. Game preservation is dying because of DRM. You want games you can still play in 10 years, pirate that sht and donate to those keeping up the good art of game cracking. It’s either that or buying remakes a decade later that are just thinly reskinned. I can live with sht like denuvo since newer games just remove it after a year and then I can buy it. Storefronts like uplay or egs that are dependent on a malignant profit only entity are at best mid-term rentals and at worst spyware you have to pay for the privilege to use.

twoface_99,

Furthermore, if you don’t want to pirate: Buy your games on GoG. They are DRM free and you don’t need the launcher to play (GoG Galaxy is amazing though btw)
