  • coltorl,

I love it when my connected and likely not security hardened devices needlessly include components that would be valuable to compromise.

    NiftyBeaks,

On the bright side, in a few years it will be fun to attempt photography on like how people use the DSi camera. It’s not much, but it’s something 🤷

    pivot_root,

If the Switch 2’s OS is anything like the Switch’s current revision of Horizon, it’s an extremely hardened OS. They’ve done a surprisingly good job plugging software holes.

    Clown_Tempura,

The ‘Switch 2’ having a camera for literally no reason is extremely on-brand for Nintendo, so I kind of believe it.

    Sludgehammer,
    @Sludgehammer@lemmy.world avatar

Eh, a camera can be useful, on the 3DS it’s great for scanning a QR code rather then manually entering a url.

And really at this point why not throw a camera on the Switch 2? The parts for a cellphone camera is like what… a couple bucks?

    CoughingwithCoffee,

It’s gonna be for AR dude.

    Signtist,

3DS advertised AR from the get-go, even coming with a set of cards and built-in games to show it off. Never ended up being anything more than a neat tech demo that people forgot about almost immediately. Haven’t really seen anything to make me think people are more interested in it now, over a decade later.

    Tarquinn2049, (edited )

VR headsets and the research behind them have made it possible to accurately track the position of the device with very little processing cost from a single camera. Additional cameras are simply for occlusion and field of view at this point. A coupled depth sensor handles any needed resolution of positional conflicts between real world objects and digital objects.

That tech wasn’t there for 3DS, even with 2 cameras it wasn’t stable or accurate, and it was pretty low res and low angle, and it couldn’t tell if the digital content should be occluded by real world objects at it’s perceived depth. Plus there are actual AR games now already established, and the framework and proof of concept to easily on-board new ones. Also, by the time the Switch 2 is released, the mainstream AR headsets and content will be even more established. Currently the best AR content is either on expensive headsets or in limited form on iPhones. But in less than a month the Quest 3 is out, an accessible mixed reality headset. It will have been out for a while by the time the switch 2 would come out.

This is very much one of the directions gaming is going. It doesn’t have to replace all gaming, and never will. But it will be a pretty big part of gaming. Especially once there is enough public trust behind it for people to play augmented reality games outdoors. Us nerds already do so, we know we won’t walk out into traffic even if the headset malfunctions. But the hypothetical “everyman” is apparently worried that they might? That’s just not how anything would work… but whatever. It’s safer than playing a phone game and wearing headphones, since letting the real world in and paying attention to both is the whole point, sight and sound.

    Tranus,

You’re absolutely right about VR. But I don’t think AR is ever going to be that big. There just isn’t as much of a point in mixing the real world with artificial elements. The only reason to do so is to get information that can’t be emulated as well for VR. As VR gets better, AR gets more redundant. AR of the style we see on phones (like pokemon go) is even more pointless. AR will stick around for virtual desktops and smart glasses and the like, but for gaming it will always be a gimmick.

    caseyweederman,

The fact that I had to open an app on my phone for voice chat meant that I never ever used voice chat.
I don’t really care if the next Nintendo console has a camera. But I extremely do not want to be forced to use some app on my phone to play the game on my Switch.

Some emoji fan already said “Nintendo Switchty-Four,” so I’m afraid you’ve been outdone before you even commented.

    Signtist,

I’m hoping for Switch Advance. I’d love a throwback logo and that old “Bling!” startup sound.

    100,

Boi if it has that bling and a transparent frosty blue option it’s over, I’m buying it day one. I miss my Gameboy advanced so much, or maybe I miss being a kid, who knows.

    MattyXarope,

After the Wii U fiasco I’d be shocked if they called it anything other than Switch 2.

    SpaceNoodle,

I’d be shocked if they learned, but relieved as well.

    An OLED screen

Backwards compatibility with Switch 1 games.

A headphone jack that allows game chat and game audio

And is designed to be easily repaired, like not having tons of adhesive, uncommon screw types etc

    SpaceNoodle,

They’re never going to get rid of the tri-wing screws.

    bassomitron,

Is there a practical reason they use those obnoxious screws or is it simply to discourage home repairs? When I had to replace my Switch’s fan last year, those insanely tiny screws were a pain in the ass to not accidentally strip.

    SpaceNoodle,

It’s purposeful to discourage user servicing. I recommend purchasing a quality tri-wing driver, e.g. from iFixit or Proskit.

    bassomitron,

I figured as much. And yeah, when I replaced my fan I bought the iFixit kit which was really useful.

    SpaceNoodle,

I’m usually not one to advertise, but they provide extremely accurate and complete guides for precision electronics repair, and sell the necessary tools and parts with sufficient quality and reasonable prices.

    sebinspace,

    Lesrid,

iFixit’s pro kit is great even if you only open up one device a year

    gwildors_gill_slits,

There’s already a version of the switch that has an OLED screen

    FrankTheHealer,

Yes and the switch 2 needs to continue with this trend

caut_R, (edited ) do games w Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom

Please backwards compatible, please OLED, please enough power to 720p60fps everything natively (no upscaling, cause that sucks on such low res, Idm 4k upscaling).

1080p60fps on portable would be a dream but I‘m not that delusional.

I‘d also be hyped if they could offer joycons that make it usable for extended amounts of time in portable without destroying my hands or having to rely on third party cases.

    @beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

Can we add a cheaper non-portable option to the wishlist? I don’t like paying for a screen or battery or junky mobile controllers that I will never use.

    darth_helmet,

This is exactly where I’m at. I don’t think my switch has left the dock on purpose since I bought it, what a waste of resources.

    Jabbawacky, (edited )

I just use Yuzu rather than my switch. Can’t beat 4k60fps+

    darth_helmet,

No judgement from me, but I do try to pay folks for their stuff if I can afford it and it’s available in the market

    Jabbawacky,

? I buy all my games and rip them using my launch Switch. I then enjoy playing them in 4k60fps instead of using the dock, with the saves synced via wifi so I can go back to handheld after.

Emulation does NOT = piracy for fucks sake.

    darth_helmet,

    Ok, carry on. My mistake.

    Jabbawacky,

Do it again and you’ll get the raspberry

Out of curiosity, how do you do the save syncing? I’ve already got Yuzu itself all setup, but this would certainly help with some issues that I face when using it.

dinckelman, do games w Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom

My only wish for this console, is that it doesn’t launch with an SoC, that’s already a year outdated, by the time the thing is announced

    4am,

Nintendo is going to want a console they can keep standardized for a while without hitting hardware limits early. It’s one of the only major flaws of the Switch, and while it’s not entirely their fault, they know the type of direction devs want to move in. IMHO they will have listened in this regard.

I don’t expect it will run “on par with PS5” as some rumors have suggested, though.

    Epicurus0319, (edited )

Yeah I agree, the Switch family in general are mostly meant to play official games like Zelda, DK and Mario whose older incarnations were also designed for other small consoles that ran on battery power, and not-so-demanding third-party games that can be played without connection to power like Minecraft BE. They’re like a modern DS with a bigger screen that you can connect to a TV and play with detachable controllers, and never pretended to be anything more.

    stankmut,

The PS5 is the size of a small boat. The only way Nintendo can release a portable console that matches it would be if it came in a wheelbarrow.

    SpaceNoodle,

    Anyone remember the Compaq Portable?

    It weighed almost 30 lbs.

    szczuroarturo,

But the ps5 plays games in 4k .if i remember correctly 4k requires 16x compute power compared to 1080p ( on the gpu side ). So with dlss from 720p to 1080p it might be possible to match 4k ps5 . Alghtough it might be immposible with the games bound by cpu , unlike the ps4/xbox one generation the consoles this time dont have a completly dogshit CPU from the get go.

    jecht360,
    @jecht360@lemmy.world avatar

That would be nice, but it’s Nintendo so it probably will be old by the time it comes out.

    SpaceNoodle,

Literally impossible since SoC vendors literally can’t deliver working pre-production chips for development work

I mean, they say they do, but they really don’t

    • Update to a newer SoC; NVIDIA's latest chips at this thermal displacement are like 4x as fast + would easily run PS4 games
    • Upgrade the controllers to be more reliable + feel better

That's pretty much it; the OLED model is fine as far as physical design + screen, it just needs more competitive performance and to fix the Joy-Con drift nightmare

    WagesOf,

I agree, hall effect joycons SoC to something that's less than two years old and maybe a little thicker for enough battery to match runtime and a tiny quiet fan.

    TwilightVulpine,

PS4 quality games on a portable format would be amazing, and it's just baffling how Sony missed the chance to do it first.

    TheCalzoneMan,
    @TheCalzoneMan@beehaw.org avatar

They did. It’s called the Vita and it’s still amazing even after Sony dumped it. I have one a friend cracked for me, and any game I could possibly want to play runs at a crisp 50 fps with no fluctuation. If only they had marketed it better.

    Coldus12,

I have one as well, but let’s not overpraise it. That handheld isn’t a “ps4 as a handheld” (obviously since the vita came out 2012 or 2011 cant remember which). And sadly it struggles to play its generation’s games (i.e. Borderlands 2 (one of my favs on vita) runs at 20-40 fps).

There are great games that showcase its abilities auch as the killzone game, but that was made for that system.

And let us not forget that it wasn’t a successful handheld. There is a reason sony hasn’t made a new handheld device since.

acastcandream, (edited ) do gaming w Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom

Maybe this time it’ll ship with an Ethernet port and joycons that last more than 6mo!

Jokes aside, very curious what changes they’ll make. Incredibly unlikely they are going to target 4K but hopefully we will see a stable 1080p @60 across the board.

    Rynelan,

4K is possible now with DLSS 3.5 and FRS3 tech. Although upscaled it would give a good quality image or at least a big FPS bump.

    acastcandream,

I just don’t see Nintendo making the jump tbh. They always lag behind resolution and FPS by a pretty large margin. Maybe we’ll see 1440p on TV’s and 1080p handhelds, but I’m also throwing darts at the board here lol

    sparky1337,

The games shouldn’t be designed with upscalers to be used to hit desired performance. We’re already seeing it with UE5 (Remnant 2) where performance without upscaling is abysmal.

If they go this route, the hardware will age incredibly quick. It’s not sustainable, especially since DLSS is tied to hardware. It would be better if FSR were implemented since it can run on anything, but the main point is that games should not require upscale tech to hit minimum performance. That leaves zero room for improvement over the life of the product and gives the user less reasons to adopt it.

My opinion though. I thought Nintendo handled the switch great for what it was. I have high hopes for the switch 2 regardless.

    RickRussell_CA,

Does the NVIDIA Tegra line support DLSS? I guess it could be based on the “Orin” line of ARM CPUs, but I can’t find anything suggesting they can do DLSS.

    TimTheEnchanter,

For real on the joycons. I think I’m on my fourth set?

    bdonvr,

Seems like a great reason for them not to fix it

    UprisingVoltage,

Yeah, it’s all working as intended

    TimTheEnchanter,

    True, ha ha!

    RickRussell_CA,

    ship with an Ethernet port

I have to ask… why? The only device I’ve connected to hardwired Ethernet is a desktop PC in the same room as my router. I’ve not used ethernet for any portable device for eons. Why would you need it?

    bdonvr,

For a TV console? For better download speeds and more consistent connection for online gaming

WiFi works okay but it can’t have cost that much to put an Ethernet port into the switch dock

    theangriestbird,

Smash players are real serious about their latency

    HidingCat,

I'm not sure if you're serious (I don't do consoles, so if that was sarcasm it's lost on me), but does that mean they use a wired pro controller too?

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Latency on wireless controllers isn't a big deal (and a lot of Smash players are using wired Gamecube controllers anyway), but it's not a big deal on wi-fi either. The problem with wi-fi is packet loss and not being able to send and receive at the same time, which feels like latency in fits and starts, because it has to wait until the packet sends successfully. Ethernet helps with Smash, but it still sorely needs rollback netcode regardless. Even on a wire, you're still on delay-based netcode.

    HidingCat,

Don't the Joycons use Bluetooth, which are pretty laggy on their own? I know I absolutely do not like using BT mice.

    theangriestbird,

they do use bluetooth. However, it should be noted that not all BT devices are created equally. Check out this table from RTINGS.com of reviews of wireless bluetooth headsets. You can see that the very worst headsets have 300+ milliseconds of latency, while the very best have almost 0 ms of latency. I imagine that the Joycons hit a similarly low latency.

    acastcandream,

Because they’ve been standard for literally decades and Nintendo has released/probably will continue to release games that depend on streaming, such as Kingdom Hearts, which is unplayable over wifi.

    Also more reliable MP/faster speeds.

    outadoc,

OLED Switch comes with a dock with a built-in Ethernet port

    acastcandream,

Yes which they bragged about lol

Most people who have a switch do not have an OLED switch. I do hope they carry over the ethernet port for the next iteration. They’ve added and removed it before!

    outadoc,

Yeah, I also hope every Switch 2 will be OLED, but… well, we’ll see 😁
