Brett, do games w Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2

The first thing i noticed is the awful amount of TAA/Upscaling artefacting. Apart from that it looks good i guess. I mean its GTA. It will probably be an enjoyable game. But still: Fuck Rockstar. Fuck Take2.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Why?

jonesy,

You mean aside from abandoning RDR Online, cancelling GTA V singleplayer DLC in favour of GTA Online shark cards, intentionally delaying the PC release of GTA V to maximise the number of people who would buy the game more than once because of FOMO, absolute dog shit support and punishing their community by crushing the modding community? I’m not sure.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure what support you’re talking about, and I’ve never delved into mods for GTA V, but the rest are just sensible business decisions, at least up until now; we’ll see how the different modern dynamic between consoles and PC plays out this time, but I think it’s the last time they’ll do it. As with all these exclusivity deals that are quickly dying out, that PC version will come, and that’s when I’ll play it.

jonesy,

Sensible business decisions definitely make the best games.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know why you’re being nasty to me. I genuinely wasn’t sure why someone would have an issue with Rockstar. If they don’t want to make story DLC for GTA V, it’s much the same as Valve not making a Portal 3. I can just move on and play something else. Focusing on a console release first and foremost, especially for a project as ambitious as this, made a lot more sense in the past, and maybe was still common wisdom when the project got rolling. It will stop due to natural market forces. Speaking of natural market forces, it’s exactly why RDR2 Online would be abandoned: there weren’t enough people to care about it compared to its costs. Modding isn’t really my world, so I wouldn’t exactly be privy to those shenanigans, but that sucks.

TORFdot0,

I don’t think he’s being nasty to you. His frustration is with Rockstar for abandoning GTA to sell microtransactions instead of make content. A lot of people are mad at valve for not making Half-Life/Portal/Left4Dead 3 just like a lot of people are mad at Rockstar for taking 13 years to release a new GTA game.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Personally, I don’t think that’s worth getting mad over, especially not in this saturated market right now where there’s always something great to play. Valve worked on Half-Life, Portal, and Left 4 Dead many times since their last iterations, but you have to give creatives time to throw out what’s not working. And plenty of game developers I like work on plenty of stuff I’m not interested in. I just wait for them to come back around to the stuff I am interested in. In the case of live service stuff, it sucks, but Rockstar’s hardly unique there.

jonesy,

100%, I think people getting frustrated over the time between GTA 5 and GTA 6 don’t appreciate the time it takes to build a game on this scale. Rockstar definitely deserve credit for the worlds they build and their focus on delivering an exceptional game.

jonesy, (edited )

Sorry if I came across as nasty, my disdain is entirely with Rockstar and T2. After GTAIV, and the exceptional story and DLC we got many of us were excited to see what DLC was in store for GTAV. To have Rockstar to walk back the planned DLC in favour pushing shark cards and micro-transactions in GTA Online left many of us feeling pretty betrayed at the time.

Regarding the launch, GTAV originally came out on Xbox 360 and PS3 in September 2013, then on a new console generation in November 2014, and didn’t come to PC until April 2015. Many were doubtful that a company with the resources and talent available to Rockstar needed such a delay, and it stank of another tactic to maximise the number of people buying multiple copies.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Gotcha. No worries. I’m more disappointed that basically everyone in the industry stopped making crime stories except for Yakuza, but we’ve got two coming this year, at least, in MindsEye and Mafia: The Old Country.

paraphrand,

It took them until this year to finally start addressing rampant cheating in GTAO PC.

The most profitable game in history, and they couldn’t muster a solution to the hacking/bullshit until now.

SausageWallet,

Did they finally do something about the modders on GTAV online? I used to play but ended up with a stalker that made the game unplayable for me because he would kick me anytime I got online, for weeks. I had to download one of the paid mod menus to stay hidden from him until I just didn’t feel like paying for that anymore and just gave up and stopped playing. It was extremely frustrating to say the least.

paraphrand,

Yeah, they finally added one of the common anti-cheat tools to it. No anti-cheat is perfect, but it has made a huge difference.

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

As long as they let you turn off the upscaling I won’t complain about it. Unfortunately there has been a trend as of late to force it on; the artifacting drives me nuts. It’s always harder to to see in youtube videos though, since they are compressed quite a bit compared to live play.

Biggest thing that concerns me was their focus on pushing one into multiplayer in V. I’m worried that is going to intensify since it made them so damn much money doing that last time.

Either way, game isn’t out for a year, and it isn’t out for PC for probably two years. So, just going to go back to enjoying my Breath of Fire IV playthrough I’m currently doing. :)

Grunt4019,

Yeah I hope the single player is solid and a decent length.

SCmSTR,

God I hope they don’t use temporal anti aliasing. Like trails in vc all over again.

    Ah okay. Nice

    metaldream,

    I run it on ultra at 1440p with RT on high and FSR performance upscaling. I get 60 fps consistently with these settings, no drops. I have a 9900X/7900 XT so I imagine you’ll be able to get quite a bit more out of it.

    i’m looking past it because my laptop is 7 years old and i’m happy it even runs lol

    SolidShake,

    Right. But your laptop and my PC shouldn’t be playing the game at the same performance ya know.

    ArchmageAzor,

    My FPS drops from 60 to like 25, but that’s rarely. It’s not like it’s a constant 25.

    sugar_in_your_tea,

    And this is why I don’t buy day 1. Performance actually looks reasonable compared to other day 1 releases, but it’s still not what I want to play. I bet most of these issues will be resolved in a month or two, and definitely resolved by the first sale, so I’ll hold off. It’s not like there’s going to suddenly be content to miss out on, it’s a remaster, so waiting is absolutely reasonable.

    metaldream,

    I had to tweak quite a bit but it’s running at a stable 60 fps at 1440p now. I wouldn’t say I’m looking past it, just enjoying it in spite of the performance issues.

    ono, do games w Lenovo Legion Go - Launch Trailer

    It’s nice to see portable PC gaming become easy, but at least for me, it’s not just about that. The Steam Deck has raised the bar, by also bringing freedom from Microsoft’s ecosystem by default. I would rather have it.

    (And I would rather give my money to Valve, who have been investing significantly in making that ideal a reality.)

    butter,

    Microsoft is not freedom. It’s vendor locking.

    mostNONheinous,

    Thats why they said it brings freedom FROM Microsoft.

    Boiglenoight,

    Valve doesn’t get the credit it deserves for innovating if not keeping alive the PC space. Steam came out at a time where PC gaming was dying on store shelves, there was no support for it by triple A publishers…it was a dark time. And everyone hated Steam at first. Took a lot of work attracting smaller/indie devs to the platform to prove itself as a viable option for larger publishers.

    They’ve proven that Linux is a great operating system for games, and without the overhead that is Windows. The ability to natively play Windows games isn’t enough of a draw for me to use the Ally or Legion.

    Makeitstop, do games w Subnautica 2 - Official Teaser Trailer

    One of the things that sets the original apart from a lot of other open world survival craft games is that it was designed to be a single-player experience. Hopefully they can make it work well for both solo and co-op, but that’s a tricky balance.

    One thing I’d really like to see is for creatures to be able to damage structures, and to balance that by having defenses to protect those structures. Being able to throw together an invincible fortress in seconds made some of the dangerous areas a lot less threatening.

    Carighan,
    @Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah I kinda hope they just go for full atmosphere solo, and say “fuck it” if people want to play it MP it’ll ruin the terror anyways.

    That is, optimize the mechanics to work both solo and MP, but optimize story and atmosphere solely for solo play.

    dat_fast_boi,

    I do agree that the game’s story/atmosphere should be designed for singleplayer first, since that’s what drew a majority of people to the first game.

    However, I think MP could still retain some sense of atmosphere as long as they have a good in game voice chat and keep it proximity based, like in Lethal Company.

    It isn’t scary at all for your teammate to tell you exactly where they just died, how, call out the leviathan heading your way, then continue with a joke they were making. But having a friendly conversation over the radio cut off by their violent death to horrors unknown could be scary, even if facing the unknown alone is fundamentally scarier.

    Idk how people still stomach Nintendo. They get 1 decent exclusive every other year, while the rest of the time, they are overcharging for all their garbage products. Most anticonsumer, anticompetition developer on the market that releases products that lag behind the rest of the industry by 5-10 years.

    They crush emulation and antique game preservation sites as a hobby.

    You need something to whatabout because you can’t address the points directly. Childish response that fits the childish fanbase of Nintendo perfectly.

    The only game developers that are anywhere in the same running as Nintendo on Anticonsumer practices would be EA, Ubisoft, and Warner Brothers. Maybe arguably Playstation and Xbox.

    brsrklf,

    Regarding “overcharging”.

    The only price that exists is the one they offer for it. If you think it’s too expensive for what is offered, congratulations, you know how to spend money. For any kind of product whatsoever.

    I certainly think Super Mario Odyssey or Super Mario Bros Wonder were worth their price tag, because they’re great. And that’s completely subjective.

    You either think it’s worth it and buy it, or you don’t. They’re selling games, not food and water. And you’ve got a freaking galaxy of other games to choose from.

    Squizzy,

    Wonder wasn’t worth thenplastic it was wrapped in. I know that is an opinion but I was very disappointed.

    As a longtime Mario fan, I liked it - but it did feel a bit short. I would have been disappointed if I’d paid full price for it.

    nac82,

    As somebody who isn’t buying their products, I can say they are overcharging. Your point falls apart when your base assumption is removed.

    brsrklf,

    You certainly can.

    It shouldn’t matter at all to you though. And it sounds absolutely ridiculous when you’re shouting your outrage at people who do buy some of their products.

    nac82,

    Yes, a comment on a board is shouting outrage.

    Shout your outrage elsewhere. Yall are desperate for a personal insult to avoid confronting the conversation about Nintendo.

    barnaclebutt,

    I don’t know why you are getting downvoted. Their actions against yuzu and citra are particularly egregious, and unforgivable in my eyes. Especially, considering they use emulation in their own products. For instance, the nes mini used roms download from the Internet. I’ll think twice about buying Nintendo products in the future, and I love Nintendo products.

    Chozo,

    Nintendo isn't against emulation. They're against piracy, which Yuzu was facilitating. None of the emulators that don't have specific support for unreleased games have been touched so far.

    nac82,

    Lies. They have taken down multiple classic emulation websites over the years. Yuzu was only the most recent victim of their bs.

    They take down private mods made by individuals all the time, too. It’s straight-up coping to deny the vile shit Nintendo does in the name of profit.

    MomoTimeToDie,

    He’s getting downvotes because he’s acting like a jackass. Like yeah, I’m pretty sure everyone here has some axe or another to grind with Nintendo, they do plenty of shitty things. But to act like their games are somehow objectively bad and that everyone who likes them is just stupid? That’s just divorced from reality and overall pretty immature. Obviously it’s plenty possible for someone to not personally enjoy the games Nintendo puts out, art is highly subjective, but their games are generally solid.

    nac82, (edited )

    I like how you had to make up shit I didn’t say to get mad about and justify yall making asses of yourselves in defense of exploitative capitalism.

    You don’t like that your shameful behavior has been called out and need an excuse to cope.

    turkalino,

    1 decent exclusive every other year

    Absolutely hyperbole. Just last year, we got Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, and Advance Wars Reboot. Doesn’t matter if these aren’t your kind of games, they sold well, were critically acclaimed, and won awards.

    lag behind the industry by 5-10 years

    For graphics, sure. For creativity, accessibility, and all the other things that matter in video games? They lead the industry

    nac82,

    Lmao. Thank you for this list of examples of my point.

    Ilflish,

    While I agree that the above commented is in order. It does not lead the industry in all other things. They are pretty mixed with performance and their online is pretty awful in comparison to other options. Accessibility is an awkward choice of words since I expect you mean accessible to ages because it also has pretty bad accessibility options. While people often mock Sony for playing it safe with it’s cinematic games it also feels like Nintendo’s IPs have slowly been conglomeration into a mould over the switches life.

    De_Narm,

    Many of the most fun games I’ve played the past 5 years are made by Nintendo. You might not like them and that is okay, but tgey are by no means garbage.

    The next take is probably more controversial, but I don’t think they are overcharging. Why drop the price after a year or two? Games don’t get magically less fun and their games are usually polished enough to last for the entire gen without being overshadowed by later releases (expect for Pokemon, they are hot garbage - at least on the technical side). I’d even argue that not dropping their prices is one of the reasons Nintendo doesn’t need the mtx bullshit most other developers pull with their games. Just look at how well Mario Kart sells despite being something like a decade old at this point.

    nac82,

    Play better games is my recommendation. Have a better frame of reference lmao. That will help you understand why a 30-hour Nintendo title charging $70 doesn’t even compete with modern $15 indie titles.

    De_Narm,

    Awfully presumptuous of you, I’ve played most major releases within the genres I like. Let me tell you, the Xenoblade series is among the best RPGs I’ve played - up there with Persona and everything Fromsoftware among others.

    Also, what’s up with the 30h comment? A good chunk of their games are longer than that. But it doesn’t matter anyway, or you’re also arguing against the quality of every God of War, every The Last of Us, Bloodborne, every Portal, Hades, every BioShock, every Resident Evil - you get it. A good chunk of these is also below 20h, and all of them are beloved and once sold at full price. All of them worth it, if you like the genre.

    phi1997,

    The only game Nintendo's charged $70 for so far is Tears of the Kingdom, which your description doesn't match at all

    lowleveldata,

    Most anticonsumer, anticompetition developer on the market

    Really? Even more than those gacha / loot boxes heavy gaming-as-a-service companies?

    nac82,

    What an ironic point to make with 0 context.

    Nintendo is the original gacha / lootbox developer. You must not remember their original big money maker was selling randomized packs of collectible cards to children, a practice they are still perfecting to this day.

    Nintendo has 10x the market share of any other gacha game too, so even if others are more exploitative, they aren’t causing as much overall damage due to market share.
