Sony Increases PS5 Controller Prices in US, Europe, and More (www.pushsquare.com) angielski

I think it’s absolutely appalling that Sony is raising prices on controllers while basically under supplying the dual sense edge joysticks and refusing to fix the stick drift issues. I have 3 controllers and each one of them has the same problem after a few months. It’s maddening.

themeatbridge,

Do yourself a favor and learn to fix the issue yourself. Take the controller apart and clean the contacts and remove any debris. Youtube is your friend here.

Then just keep an eye on craigslist for used controllers. A lot of people just sell them as broken, or try to get away with selling them as working. The repair only takes like 15 minutes, and it can pay for itself if you start selling the service to friends.

themeatbridge,

I have a PS5 and have never heard of this game. Why are you so keen to talk about it?

themeatbridge,

No, but I’m a dad. My last gaming rig had a SoundBlaster card.

themeatbridge,

I got my SoundBlaster from my uncle who upgraded, and I think it was a Gravis. But that was like 30 years ago, so I might be wrong.

themeatbridge,

FFVIII had those gun swords that had no gun functionality whatsoever. I kept thinking “this will be the upgrade that lets me shoot the gun, or launch the blade, or supercharge the blade with an explosive hit, or something to justify the fact that the handle is a revolver.” Each successive upgrade, it increased my expectations that the gun function would be awesome, because otherwise it would have been an earlier upgrade.

themeatbridge, (edited )

I played the first two games, and I watched the trailer.

What are the bigots whining about?

-oh look, there’s one down below in the comments. I’ll ask them.

Edit: I asked 'em, but I received no answers. One called me a slur, but I’m not sure what else I was expecting.

themeatbridge,

What are you whining about?

themeatbridge,

What are you whining about?

themeatbridge,

I assumed that he was referencing the morality mechanic that’s been a staple of the game from the beginning. Be good, and you’re revered. Be evil, and people will fear you. Also, your looks change to match, IIRC. “Really sticks with you.”

themeatbridge,

It’s weird to be snarky about literacy when you have a spelling error in your whining.

themeatbridge,

its probably intentionally ambiguous

100% this.

themeatbridge,

So doubling down on the bigotry, eh? At least you’re honest about what you’re about.

themeatbridge,

The fact that you think “intentionally ugly” and “diversity” are the same thing is just a staggering new form of ignorant intolerance. I’m going to need a minute to digest that.

Ok, so many question…

Is it that you only play as characters you want to fuck? Or you only play as characters that look like you? Or is it both, and you only want to fuck people who look like you, and want to play games where that’s part of it?

How ugly do you need to be to no longer be normal? Or is it being different from you that makes people ugly?

Are all ugly people minorities in your mind? Like you see someone on the street with crooked teeth and a mishapen head, and you think “Your kind aren’t welcome here!” Or are there certain minorities that are ugly to you, and you think this character model looks like one of “them”? Which group is even represented in this trailer?

I’m really curious about you. I’d really rather not be, and I’d probably be happier if I just forget you exist. You’re like a really weird shaped piece of dog shit. How were you formed? What the fuck was wrong with that dog?

I know you probably won’t give me answers, and will probably just fall back on some tired cliche of an insult again. But on the off chance that you feel like sharing, I’d love to know more.

themeatbridge,

I lived through it, and even as kids we all agreed the N64 controller was weird and illogical. But we got used to it and it was not a hurdle or a detriment to the console. You could tell if people had played before if they held the center grip or the left grip.

themeatbridge,

The nunchuck was sublime (when it worked), but the ergonomics of the wiimote were ridiculous. Pointing at the screen required an unnatural wrist angle that wasn’t sustainable for long gaming sessions, and trying to turn it horizontal to use as a standard controller was simply ass.

themeatbridge,

Which is usually unwritten but understood. It’s wild that they put it in writing.

themeatbridge, (edited )

“It’s been brought to my attention that many people were not mollified by my previous apology, so let’s do it again. I’m sorry you people are too stupid and selfish to understand our first apology, and we want you to know that we will continue to make promises we can’t keep, we will continue to put shareholders above customers, and we will continue to justify our shitty behavior with bullshit semantics because we have learned nothing from this experience. Sincerely, Fuck You.”

themeatbridge,

My first was the OG Legend of Zelda on the NES, and it will always occupy a special place in my heart. I hated The Adventure ot Link because it was so different from the first one, and because I could never get past the first dark cave. I spent hours scouring the towns for a candle, and it never occurred to me that I could just go through it in the dark.

OOT was amazing getting to ride Epona and move around in 3 dimensions. The puzzles, the stories, the polygons, I think that was my favorite Zelda experience overall.

Twilight Princess was fun, and I loved Skyward Sword more than most people seemed to. To me, the Wii mechanics and the flying were worth the frustrations. But I understand why it was divisive.

Breath of the Wild had that OOT feeling of discovery to it. It was fun to play, and novel enough to keep me exploring. I haven’t played Tears of the Kingdom yet, but my son loves it so I’m looking forward to it.

I regret that I never played A Link to the Past, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, or any of the handheld games.

themeatbridge,

People did have issues paying for it all together, back when they were called “expansion packs.”

I don’t mind paying for more of the game. I do mind paying for fixes to a broken game. I don’t mind optional cosmetic upgrades, but I don’t like pay-to-win, even in single player (looking at you, Nintendo amiibos).

But regardless, people are going to complain, and many of their complaints will be valid.

Epic Games reportedly hit by 189GB hack, including login and payment info (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

The report comes from Cyber Daily, who also broke the news of last year’s confirmed hack attack on Insomniac Games. The site claims that new ransomware group Mogilevich are the culprits, as per the screencap of a darkweb posting above, and that the hackers are now trying to get Epic or another party to pay up for the return of...

themeatbridge,

The next MCU movie is going to be Deadpool and Wolverine this summer. Do you think that movie will make some money?

themeatbridge,

It’s also an objectively terrible movie. People don’t want to go see terrible movies.

Who, in your opinion, is the most annoying character in any game?

Personally, it’s Faith from Farcry 5 for me. Uninteresting dialog that can be summed up to “I was bullied once” and that’s it. Literally every other character is so much more interesting. Jacob gives you a sequence where you run through a gulag which he then uses against you, John tries to kill you and is openly hateful...

themeatbridge,

Kung Fu on NES, the magician. The arcade version was normal sized and you just had to kick his ass. The NES edition he was tiny, and you could only hurt him with a crouch and punch. When you have to take turns with your brother, and it takes several tries to make it that far, it seemed like the greatest victory to finally figure it out.

  • themeatbridge,

I wouldn’t. Did you read the whole thing?

    themeatbridge,

We’ve been conditioned to hoard stuff.

“Hi, welcome to the midgame checkpoint. To continue, please produce 25 potions that require four different useless items.”

“Oh ho, this enemy is impervious to your broadsword. But if you have that one dagger the orphan boy dropped 26 playing hours ago, then you can throw it in his eye and obtain the Orphan’s Treasure. This unique item will grant a buff that increases gainaxing.”

“Yes, you’re low on health, but you can eat 25 cheese wheels. Save those hundred full life potions for when you really need th-Oh that was the last boss. Good job, you win, and the potions mean nothing.”

Ok, that last one is a reason not to hoard, but it stems from a thousand boss battles where you didn’t have any healing items.

    themeatbridge,

Could we get a text transcription for mobile users? Please and thank you!

    themeatbridge,

Yeah, heavy survivorship bias in this one.

    themeatbridge,

“Can’t have people playing games forever for a reduced price. Into the landfill with all the plastic!”

    themeatbridge,

Sounds like the price reduction will be only in Walmart accounting system, so they can justify throwing them all away and write off the lost sales. I doubt they will actually sell all of those games.

    themeatbridge,

Per the article, Microsoft is paying them not to sell any of the physical games and take them off the shelves. I’ll bet dollars to donuts that they end up buried in a landfill next to ET.

Veteran Videogame Analyst: Subscription growth has flattened [in video games] (files.catbox.moe) angielski

Adding a bit more to the discussion on whether game subscription can be “the future”, it looks like despite the heavy push made in the past decade, subscriptions only make up 10% of total video game spending in the US....

    Consider the french fry.

When McDonald’s started asking “would you like fries with that?” their sales and profits exploded. That really happened.

Now let’s get theoretical. Imagine you were a potato farmer, and your friend was a cattle farmer. You both have an interest in selling as much of your product for the highest price possible.

You might try to promote potatoes, because that’s good for you. “French fries are going to become the main course, and burgers are going to become obsolete.” Well, no, that’s not supported by the data. That doesn’t mean that fries aren’t good for McDonald’s. Sales for both went up. People buying french fries didn’t buy fewer burgers. The effect was additive, not canibalistic.

Of course, does that mean that either is “good” for the industry? Does that mean it’s “good” for consumers? Is it fearmongering to point out the health risks of eating fried potatoes and ground beef every day, or how bad factory feeding people is for the economy?

Subscription gaming isn’t going to replace traditional games. But it has become a significant part of the industry. If that’s good or bad depends on your perspective.

    themeatbridge,

You mean farming out scientific discovery to the lowest bidder doesn’t yield the best results?

    themeatbridge,

There are also hundreds of other theories that can potentially explain it. Like, 100 years really isn’t a long time on cosmic scales. Maybe we’re late to the party and intelligent life wiped itself out already. Maybe we’re early, and we will wipe ourselves out before a new intelligence even figures out where the copy paper is.

For as big as space is, time is bigger.

    themeatbridge,

Why are you asking questions when I already know you don’t care?

    themeatbridge,

I want to be absolutely clear that I don’t condone doxxing or harassment, and people should be free to push boundaries in artistic endeavors.

But you only get to Bowser in 8-4 if you make several specific choices in the game, and it seems like the main draw of the game is being edgy with sexy cartoons. If it didn’t want to be “the incest game” then it shouldn’t really have incest in it. That’s a controversial choice, and if the developer didn’t know that, they didn’t read or watch Game of Thrones.

    themeatbridge,

I never finished Braid, but always meant to go back to it.

    themeatbridge,

Does anyone else remember bringing home free trials on floppy disks? Like you get the first level of Wolfenstein or Commander Keen and you just play that over and over because you don’t have any money.

    themeatbridge,

    Story time.

This is a really old one, but when I was a young kid, we had a PC game called “Test Drive 2: The Duel.” You were a racer trying to beat a specific time, and there were speed traps. You had a radar detector that would alert you to speed traps, and if you were speeding, the cops would pull you over and write you a ticket before letting you continue. Of course, getting a ticket would ruin your time.

So I tried to slow down so I wasn’t speeding whenever the radar detector went off. I could never get the required times, no matter what I tried, because there was always a speed trap on every level. Eventually I complained to my brother, who had beaten the game several times over. He watched me playing once, and when he was like, “Why are you slowing down?!” Because I don’t want to get pulled over. “Your car is faster than the police car!”

I had been playing the game for weeks, and it never occurred to me to try to outrun the police. I’d see lights and sirens in the rearview, and I’d just pull over like a responsible citizen.

So I hit the gas and watched the police shrink in the rearview and eventually disappear on the horizon, and then I had to rethink everything about my life up to that point.

    themeatbridge,

Well I considered it, but I don’t have access to a Countach. So mostly just piracy and jaywalking, like a boss.

    themeatbridge,

Help! The cheat code to reduce my wanted level isn’t working, and the auto-paint shop said I need an appointment!! Quick answers plz!

    themeatbridge,

Except weren’t they still promoting those features at launch? And they had taken preorders before review embargoes were lifted.

Both No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk both had dishonest marketing and significant bugs. Call me crazy, but if a game isn’t ready to launch, it shouldn’t launch. The developer sets the launch date, and if they didn’t give themselves enough time, it’s not reasonable to ask the people who have paid for he thing as advertised to wait because they couldn’t deliver the features as promised.

    themeatbridge,

Yeah, I bought it during beta testing and my account was attached to an old email. Gave up trying to migrate years ago. I’m actually surprised they still haven’t deleted it already.
