frigidaphelion, do games w Bungie lays off 220 people, will set up spin-off studio

Fuck bungie. I paid for destiny 2 and the first dlc or so, and they literally removed that content and didnt compensate anyone for it. If you’re okay with behavior like that, fuck you too. They’re forever anathema to me.

echodot,

I do not understand why anyone bought Destiny 2, The first game was so uneven and hard to define, was it a MMO or a loot shooter or what, and then they came out with another game without fixing the first one, why would you expect it to be any better?

TommySoda, do games w Bungie lays off 220 people, will set up spin-off studio

My general rule of thumb when it comes to this is that if they say “due to rising costs” within the first few sentences it usually means “not enough money for the important people.”

I’ve seen indie devs make more functional and graphically intensive games on a shoe string budget. And then go around and sell it for less than $60.

JJROKCZ,

Plenty of amazing small studios make great games for a budget of a couple packs of mtn dew and some cheese whiz crackers

Abnorc,

I think it would be easier for indie devs to keep cost down. They have fewer devs and artists on payroll. The issue with triple A games is that they’re super expensive to produce, and small teams can output excellent work as well.

TommySoda,

Let’s be real though, they are only so expensive to produce because they have the notion that bigger and more expensive means better. Just look at what happened with Starfield. You can’t tell me that game wouldn’t be immensely better if there were just like 8 or even less planets. You don’t need to make things as massive and expensive as possible to make a successful game. You just need to have a good idea with a good execution. I’ll play a game like Deep Rock Galactic or RimWorld over and over again, but I got bored of Destiny within a year or so. Heck, I’ve probably put more hours into the Halo games over my life than I ever will in Destiny.

echodot,

I keep thinking people are going to make my dream game and then they make it too big and then it doesn’t work.

I just want a space game set in a single solar system planets with multiple locations that I can fly around do stuff in. Basically just make the Expanse into game.

But they are always trying to make it the whole sodding universe, and then inevitably say you have FTL, because otherwise it would be boring, and then it turns out that it’s just a bunch of cutscenes playing between various levels and it isn’t a whole cohesive environment at all.

Even Elite Dangerous is guilty of this, although they are much better at hiding it.

Hope this isn’t some kind of token gesture so MS can say “See, we don’t restrict our games to only Xbox and PC, unlike Sony and Nintendo. Please accept our proposal to buy (next game company they buy for several billion dollars).”

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a gesture that acknowledges that they’ll never be a market leader following the old model ever again. Those days are over.

RightHandOfIkaros,

To be fair, it IS more than Sony or Nintendo are doing.

conciselyverbose,

Because their market share is so bad that they can’t make their money back on their own hardware.

Not entirely. Sony has been releasing games to PC.

RightHandOfIkaros,

Some. Some games. The very minimum amount of games that are typically not highly requested games.

TLOU2 Remaster really be coming to PC before Bloodborne or Demons Souls Remake.

Grass,

With huge delay where it should be discounted by release but they tret it like brand new, maybe a mediocre texture enhancment fans could have done better and calling it remasteted, then with the forced useless psn log in…

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Completely agree with you, but MS is doing this for money too, they just think it’s a strategy that works better for them, specially because they are selling least amount of consoles.

Viri4thus,

SoNy BaD.

Dude, MS has been dumping and killing the value of games so much, the entire industry is shifting to free to play live service. MS single-handedly ruined the past 10y of the games industry with their push to remove physical ownership and move everything to the cloud so they can double dip with Azure and Xbox. Furthermore they are responsible for the introduction of pay to play online and on Xbox you had to pay to play F2P games online until recently. Sony are greedy cunts but MS is not even on the same level of evil, they are pure distilled cancer and thanks to them the 2nd hand industry for game copies is struggling, everyone went live service because full price game sales went to shit thanks to gamepass (which is still not profitable) and now they have orchestrated a coup to kill Ubi so they can buy it the same way they did with Nokia. FWIW, the whole PSN debacle started with the sanctions on Russia.

shadowedcross,
@shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works avatar

At least a year after releasing it on console, in an attempt to get players to buy the console for the sequels. I think there’s at least a small chance they might start releasing them sooner but we’ll have to see.

NewNewAccount,

Which companies are even left to buy?

slazer2au,

Ubisoft, but I don’t see that being purchased by MS.
Embracer Group, or whatever they are called now.

ms_lane,

It’s more likely to try and capture more hype and eventual sales, TOW2 doesn’t exactly have lot of hype behind it right now.

BorgDrone,

I don’t think it’s a token gesture. Microsoft is a software company; they want to sell software, not hardware. They don’t really care about xbox other than as a means to sell more software and gamepass subscriptions. Selling their games on as many platforms as possible is a logical move for them.

RightHandOfIkaros,

Whatever they’re making now isn’t even Marathon. Some random game with the same name and a few references, but its a crappy live service looter shooter like Tarkov or whatever. I love Marathon, but this imposter deserves a fat L.

4am,

Imagine having that entire lore to work with and you make a shitty “The Finals” with it.

Bungie lost their way the moment Microsoft pulled gaming away from Mac.

RightHandOfIkaros,

Nah, the Bungie developed Halo games were great. Literally ruled the world. Bungie lost their way when they started mistreating their own major employees (the reason the number 7 is so prevalent in Bungie stuff). Poisoned the watering hole.

Joe Staten wrote out this whole world and plan for Destiny 1 and then Jason Jones scrapped it and Frankensteined it with his friends fantasy thing. And he locked Joe Staten out of the conversations about Destiny 1 after that. Joe Staten had written the Dreadnaught (which ended up in the Taken King expansion) as the end game area of the base game. That and what they did to Marty, you don’t do that without some serious internal problems.

braindefragger, (edited )

Skjsjdjd

RightHandOfIkaros,

No, that happened under Activision, once Destiny moved beyond just simple story beats and started getting into a more detailed development cycle.

JJROKCZ,

The finals isn’t even a looter shooter though, it’s an arena shooter.

The finals is pretty damn fun though I will say.

I’ll also say I wanted marathon to work, any good competition to tarkov is welcome because I’m not fucking supporting Nikita and his idiotic practices anymore. He got EOD money from me in 2016/17, hope he made good use of it

big_slap,

The finals is pretty damn fun though I will say.

the finals is AMAZING. I picked it back up this season, every complaint I had with the beta and first season was fixed. it’s just so damn fun to play with friends, I can’t praise it enough

JJROKCZ,

There are few things more fun than launching the acetylene tanks at everything and everyone at every opportunity

GoodEye8,

They aren’t making a shitty finals. Last I heard they originally wanted to make a tarkov style extraction shooter, but when they got Tarkov creators to play it and call it shit they pivoted into some kind of a tarkov/overwatch mix of hero based extraction shooter or something like that.

That’s when I stopped paying attention as it’s most likely in development hell.

stoy, do games w Borderlands 4 narrative director hints at dialling back the toilet humour – WGB

Borderlands 1 was a bit too slow both with the gameplay and the humor, this is obviously understandable due to it being the first game.

Borderlands 2 had humor that was really, really perfectly on the edge, the story was a classic freedom fighter story set in a bizarre sarcastic universe.

Borderlands TPS kept going with the same type of humor that B2 had but added a lot of fun backstory to Jack and the loaders/constructors.

Borderlands 3 took it too far with the toilet humor, and the whole social media storyline. At times it felt as if I was acting out a scene rather than playing a hero. Oh and I absolutely hated Vaughn.

Plantfoodclock,

I couldn’t fully get through 3 to the very end but when I was playing, I had to turn off subtitles and dialogue audio to get through it without cringing the entire way through. Rough story aside, lot of the humour of 3 felt dated at the time of release whereas 2 /TPS still fit the humor at the time, which I lets me still appreciate it now. Course, it also helped the general stories for 2 and TPS were also enjoyable.

stoy,

I have basically just played through B3 after grinding B1, B2 and BTPS, and the humour takes an absolute nosedive in B3.

Also B3’s UI is terrible

meant2live218, do games w New Darksiders game teased by THQ Nordic

Embracer doesn’t really make a game good or bad. The harm they’ve brought to the industry has more to do with their acquisition of studios and then closing them down after realizing they’ve overextended themselves. In the early days, they were looked at as a potential boon to the industry, offering pay stability for studios with their size, but obviously they made some poor choices and have done irreparable damage to many developers’ lives.

Lost_My_Mind, do games w Rockstar might be bringing GTA+ to Nintendo Switch

When is it going to bting GTA 6 to…any platform???

I remember GTA III came out in 2001. By 2002 GTA Vice City was out. By 2004 GTA San Andreas was out.

In 2007 GTA 4 came out.

In 2013 GTA V came out.

And then 2014 GTA V came out…again.

And then in 2022 GTA V came out…AGAIN.

So when does GTA VI come out? Or do we need to get GTA V on PS6 first?

Did you miss the announcement? They released a trailer, which revealed the year it’s releasing. 2025. It was even leaked a few hours beforehand, which was quite a big deal in itself.

sp3tr4l,

And it showed a beautiful new/upgraded engine, introduced some new characters, and revealed absolutely nothing about gameplay, yet this did not stop seemingly tens of thousands of people from pulling whatever their idea of a neat feature is out of their ass and connecting it in the least substantial way possible to some random part of the trailer.

tlou3please,

In fairness the scale of these games has increased sharply, and they have released other equally big titles in between (namely RDR). I’d rather wait until they’re satisfied with the product than play something unfinished.

zaphod,

Look at it from console generations. The Xbox 360/PS3 generation got two GTAs (GTA IV even got two add-ons), RDR, and if you want to count it L.A. Noire. The PS4/Xbox One generation got RDR 2 and a rerelease of GTA V. I doubt it’s about scale, they just wanted to milk GTA Online and didn’t care about anything else.

big_slap,

I hope the wait will be worth it. may be the first game to me that’ll fully utilize all the horsepower between the ps5 and xsx

iAmTheTot,

It was good, not great.

Lucidlethargy,

I was more engaged by this than the Witcher 3. I’m not saying it’s better, I’m just saying it was engaging.

ms_lane,

I wouldn’t even say it was good.

It was aggressively mid.

I own it, I’ve played it through. I don’t think I’ll ever pick it up ever again. I’ll get this sequel when it’s under $10.

iAmTheTot,

I’ve played many, many good games only once and don’t think I’ll ever play them again.

EnderMB,

It could have been good if all the planets were actually playable.

It felt like half a game, and another six months to bake would have probably turned it into a great game with some replayability. Put a gun to my head, and I couldn’t tell you the plot, but I remember both “some” fun, and a lot of frustration of how short it was.

BertramDitore,

I really wanted to like it, but just couldn’t get into it. It was completely forgettable for me, and I like nearly every game that has a sci-fi setting. My bar is very low for that genre, but this one was not engaging at all for me.
