Zerush, do gaming w You can't take it with you, but you can't leave it for someone else either: Valve says you aren't allowed to bequeath a Steam account in a will
@Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

How will they control if someone other continue with your account when you die?

Moghul,

Same as any other illegality. It’s legal until you get caught. The account will work fine until for one reason or another it becomes obvious you’re not the original owner of the account, and then it’s banned. Billing changes, location changes, ip changes, confession, etc.

Zerush,
@Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

Maybe some generations later in the future it becomes suspicious. Valve want gain money and there is no reason that it will deep investigate if the downloads are still paid from the same account and paid with the same banc account, irrelevant if it’s from a different IP or ISP, that are things that can change even with the same user (transladet to other city, changing provider or PC, etc).

Moghul,

But imagine if the original owner bought Skyrim, and then you have to buy it again if you want to play it. Two Skyrim moneys!

Zerush,
@Zerush@lemmy.ml avatar

Anyway, if I’m dead I’ll give a fuck if Valve want to claim something

Xoriff, do gaming w President of Xbox at Microsoft asked about the closure of Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, spends close to a minute saying almost nothing

So… At what point do gamers start sending a message. “Microsoft: why are players cancelling their game pass subscriptions?”

Or does the smackdown happen from the creator side “Microsoft: why doesn’t anybody want to make games on our platform anymore?”

They wouldn’t pull this kind of shit if there were monetary repercussions. So, why do these bullshit strategies work?

ImplyingImplications,

You know how kids will want anything that has their favourite character on it? Gamers are just like that. Elder Scrolls 6 can have 1 minute ads in between areas and it would still top sales charts because gamers cannot stop themselves.

I really hope the recent pushback Sony got will spark a new norm but I’m very cynical.

shutz,

Someone would just release a mod that replaces the ads with Monty Python sketches.

I think Sony just delisted Ghost of Tsushima from all countries where PSN isn’t available, even though it’s primarily a single player game that won’t require PSN.

So Sony is still on their bullshit, even though they conceded over Helldivers.

BlitzKrieg2552,

I’ve been an Xbox fan for a long time and 3 months ago my GamePass Ultimate subscription ran out. Been pondering buying up another 3 years to continue it since Hellblade 2 is coming out this month. This recent fiasco has changed my opinion of Xbox and I will no longer be supporting Xbox as I have been. Might buy a month membership just to play Hellblade for less than the actual price of the game, but otherwise I’m done. Fuck them

You can start by not buying GamePass, or preordering games.

You are asking a lot because gamers are the dumbest fucking people on the planet.

AsherahTheEnd, do gaming w Making good, profitable games 'will no longer keep you safe': industry expresses fury and heartbreak over closure of Hi-Fi Rush and Prey studios

AAA gaming is doomed, it has been irreversibly tainted by capitalism and I don’t think it can recover. Indie games are where it’s at, typically higher quality and much cheaper. It’s shameful how terrible most AAA games are nowadays because they have to put in excuses for microtransactions. It’s depressing but I think we’re truly entering a golden age for indies and other smaller budget games.

Muffi,

I’ve been playing the Hades 2 beta recently, and I keep thinking about how incredible it is that this game is already better than any AAA title I’ve played in the last like 8 years. And it’s still in beta and made by just 23 people. Call of Duty, FIFA and the like will keep the big studios running for a while, but indie has definitely overtaken the industry and I’m all for it.

@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

So…I’ve lost count of how many Mission Impossible movies they made. At some point between 2014 and 2016 I think they made one, because for hundreds of youtube videos in a row I was shown an ad that had this irritating song that went “Ready or not, here I come” in a really nasally voice? Apparently advertising a Mission Impossible movie.

I have refused to watch any Mission Impossible movie, or any movie starring Tom Cruise made before or since, and to a degree the spy/action thriller/guy intensely running genre ever since. Because of how much they chose to irritate me about it.

If part of your strategy is to beat me into submission, I’m going to avoid your entire market segment forever.

Meanwhile a lot of my favorite games I never saw actual advertisements for, even if those ads existed. I learned about them from word of mouth, watching streamers/youtubers, or searching for “games like [game I enjoy]”

I categorically rule out a lot of big business practices because the era when “Hey you could make a fun game about flying an X-Wing” is over and the era of “Our business strategy leverages marketable properties in a variety of monetization verticals” is coming to a middle. So I tend to buy from smaller studios or solo developers.

On a completely different subject which I think is related: My parents want a cabinet and hutch for their dining room. I’m designing and building it. Looking on the internet for ideas, I like how that cornice is done. Can’t do those legs the way I’m going to build the side rails" type thing, I notice a trend: There is basically no documentation on the internet that anyone actually uses dining room hutches to store things they frequently use. Those that aren’t just blank to market the cabinet itself are crammed with random knickknacks or worse the White Woman’s Instagram tableau. A scroll sawn cursive word, some brand new ceramic containers with words printed on them in that thin tall font, especially a teapot with TEA written on it in which tea will NEVER be made, a statue of a pig, an old sifter, a fake plant…

I hate the idea of such a large, complicated and expensive piece of furniture used as a trophy case or a diorama of basic bitchery. In the words of George Carlin, “spending money you don’t have on things you don’t need.”

Merva, do games w Just months after reportedly cancelling two live service games in development, Sony announces a new PlayStation studio with a live service game in development

As long as there continues to be succesful live service games, they will never stop attempting to make new ones, because the succesful ones are the most profitable forms of entertainment ever devised.

Of course there is only room for a limited amount of live service games on the market (since gamers only have one life to waste on them), so most of them will fail, and many of them even before leaving the drawing board it seems.

Kecessa,

Yep, they can make a bunch of games that costs them hundreds of millions to make it they manage to make one that brings in billions in profit… That’s what we call gambling.

Master167,

That’s what we call gambling.

Most companies call it R&D.

Agent_Karyo,
@Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world avatar

This is an excellent point. An organisation the size of Sony is simply incapable of not attempting a live service hit as long as they have the resources to do so.

A smaller player can pursue a strategy where they gain profits from their (somewhat specialized) segement of the market. Sony lacks that flexibility due to their size.

Don_alForno,

But then, why do they keep canceling them before release? They don’t know if they’d have been hits or failures.

Merva,

Of course we can’t really know what goes on behind the scenes. But obviously these kinds of games are designed by committee (namely board members). So every single detail is going to be dictated from above, and as new games are released by other publishers with new succesful features these dictates changes mid-production. I can’t but imagine that the development of live service games are a complete shitshow from start to finish.

So perhaps at some point they decide to get rid of the entire mess and start afresh, only for the process to beging again of course.

Don_alForno,

I’ve seen project managment in industrial fields go in circles in similar ways, and now that you put it this way I can totally see it.

RedAggroBest,

Also worth noting that getting a live service game with enough infrastructure going to immediately make them millions is a significant startup cost on its own. picking the best project of them and then putting it in its own studio seems like a very smart way to do it.

ytsedude, do games w Exodus, the new game being led by BioWare veteran James Ohlen, finally reveals some gameplay, and boy it sure looks like Mass Effect

Looking like Mass Effect is not a bad thing. ME rules. If the gameplay is just as fun and characters/story just as interesting, then I’m absolutely down. That said, the NPCs are giving me cliche, overly-talkative, super annoying vibes. Hopefully that’s just from the editing. After the utter failure of Starfield, a solid sci-fi RPG would be very welcome, even if it’s a little derivative or overly reminiscent of its predecessors.

Biodegradable silicone would be kinda cool.

That said, the 2 months wait and uncertainty of products seems to be a thing of the past (based on the things I purchase, not like I’m ordering skinny jeans), as most stuff arrives in 2 weeks and hasn’t made it to the trash.

Though Canada Post being on strike is likely to bugger that up.
