Nintendo hasn’t really C&D any of the previous decomps. they can for people who upload the whole precompiled executable, but none of them that requires actually ripping the original assets yourself to create the required game.

Animal Crossing is next, as 6 days ago, the gamecube version of the game was decompiled to completion. It’s a extremely big prime candidate for modding IMO.

i think the funniest part is ontop of bad acquisitions, Microsoft was only able to buy blizzard activision partially because sony had a history of making non PlayStation versions of games inferior to the PlayStation version.

had Sony actually played fair ball, none of this would have probably happened.

not going to be a steam OS user, but its less what you can’t, and more that any changes that valve patches in via their efforts on AMD drivers, users would get it first and without any fuss.

One example is HDR support. various distros and DEs kinda sat on HDR for the longest time, with mixed results on implementation. Valve just walks in and implements it.

gacha have element of chance, but usually speaking, gacha especially in asian games tend to also be tied to some form of power and is not purely cosmetic.

ao its not just purely, i want this character/costume/weapon because it looks cool, but theyres stats attached to it.

western game loot boxes generally sit more often as coametic, so the desire to pay isnt as bad (but can still be bad) but of course this doesnt apply to all western games either. an example of gacha based power is ultimate teams for sports games, which its gacha has players stats tied to them for team building.

gacha and loot boxes are fundamentally the same, but connotatively, gacha usually implies power and lootbox implies cosmetics, but technically not incorrect to use it either way.

if you want a dumb comparison, gacha is seen like trading card games, where power of the card also has value.

lootbox is sorta like sports cards where its collective in nature and really is about rarity/how the card looks

its worse than comparing it to physical media that has all content on media, but better than display boxes that only has a digital code in it.

digital key carts are more replacing the latter (which is better) but there will definitely be a few devs who will opt out of physical media storage costs for the key card

outside of the official service, there is actually one other feature that people forget exists, and would be relevent to the resell of the key.

updating by local user (no not the recently announced game sharing stuff, but the ability to update a game via just being near a device with the update)

edit: of course, this will only work if nintendo okays the transfer of the BASE game instalation as well. time will tell if its possible or not, as its a situation thats functionalyl hard to test.

youd be suprised. all of Sonys consoles are hackable, despite efforts to stopping it. willing to guess that another SD express exploit will be found, as one was already found late last year, and the switch 2 is one of the devices that uses it.

besides the lower bar of entry due to being free, Midias research has shown that the younger generation prefers online multiplayer, and as you grow older, you start to favor single player games more.

the problem is, they see the market like its a brand recognition situation, which pc gamers it isnt exactly that. PC gamers are very incentive based buyers and will opt for something else if the incentive is “worth it” for them. the problem is, most platforms are really terrible at generating this incentive for consumers. GOG does with drm. free content, and to a lesser extent, epic does it with free games and tight unreal integration.

I’ll give an example that wont happen because someone looking at the numbers wont let it happen. Amazon for example could easily develop a propietary media reader, and invest in a physical media printing line, and basically become the defacto publisher for physical pc releases if they wanted to, giving PC players a HUGE incentive on buying on their platform (enabling the buying, selling, and trading of used games on pc), and could easoly also be the platform that buy/sells used copies. we all just know they wont because they dont want any of the risk and cost associated on doing so.

i just find it funny because the fix for it was use the playstations developer version of vsync, but fromsoft decided that they wanted to redo whats already done. thats why the stutter is almost present on all fromsoft games of that console generation.

not all gacha games have a pity system, and a pity system is not part of the definition of a gacha game. For example, Puzzle and Dragons, one of the first major gacha games on mobile, whose gachapon system is literally modeled off a gachapon machine, does not have a pity system. It’s not different. Having a pity system is not a requirement for being a gacha. For example, Fate Grand Order for the longest time, did not have a pity system. You would not suddenly call it a gacha game after it got a pity system, as it was already one before hand.

even with the price increase, they cant realistically do it haphazardly, as the switch has a very low online subcriber rate (~20%) compared to Sony, whos rate sits closer to 80%.

just increasing the price without offering some feature of value will hurt shareholders trust in nintendo, at least in the longterm.

Budget gaming: steam deck or build a cheap gaming PC?

Hey all, sorry in advance if this kind of post isn’t welcome in this community. I wasn’t really sure where to post this question and I didn’t see anything in the rules against text posts or questions. If there’s a more appropriate place to post I’ll take this down and repost somewhere else....

whether you go handheld or desktop PC depends on what you plan to play and how often you play “handheld” and “sitting at home”

can I throw in an odd alternative 3rd option. Not the steam deck specifically, but many of the windows gaming handhelds have USB 4 support. with that, they enable the user to use an external GPU if they wanted. So if you wanted a better “docked experience” you can get one later down the line and treat it like some middle ground from having a “desktop” pc and handheld pc on demand. down the line you can choose to upgrade one experience or the other when the time is right if you would like a middle of a choice option.

this option is not very setting friendly though, as youd constnatly have to switch back and forth if you choose this path

We should celebrate the volunteers that create wonderful content for us, generally with no financial gain. it doesnt even have to be a mod, just free. See what happened with AetherSX2(android ps2 emulator) and how a bunch of people kept pestering a dev till he basiclaly quit working on it on mobile because they ask for a lot for something that was literally free.

    only casually read stuff on hardocp around the sandy/ivy bridge generation. but yes a good chunk of it died to video coverage of the content. its why for example Gamers Nexus has the reverse approach where the video content is their main priority (and audience) and they maintain their own website because thats what they wanted to do.

    as long as analogue didnt use the devices actual hardware design and code, its completely legal. theyre not selling you games, theyre selling you a piece of hardware capable of playing said games with their own hardware design.

    i dont want to say emulation in a soft sense because its not software emulation, its hardware to hardware emulatoion.

    basically the major points of change was launch, then cyberpunk edgerunners clothing dlc patch (1.0 but bigs fixed). 2.0 rewrote some of the games mechanics that dropped before the expansion. and then the expansion was released (which added new endings)

    I remember fondly the days of playing Heroes of Might and Magic II, never played HOMM3 or anything after, but as I looked at the latest and most “recent” heroes games… they’re all rated/reviewed SO harshly. Apparently, they never gained steam like the earlier titles. RTS seems to have the same issue, tapering off....

    its not exactly for the positive reason you think. theyre trying to prevent the class action lawsuit going around the (UK?) right now and realized when a certain amount of people take the arbitration, it gets fairly costly, so they reverted on that clause.

    regardless fuck arbitration, its like paying off judges but even more transparent about it.

    its basically doing the right thing for the wrong reason (reverting arbitration cause not for thr consumer, but for their wallets)

    its more or less that yes. they saw the money but not the time and effort to get users to use your platform.

    and its not like impossible, as long as you can create games people will play and stay at itll work (e.g Riot), but they legit put such little effort in the launchers that it was creating a negative user experience, and never put in the money to make it better.

    battlefields a bit different. battlefield basically nowadays is that the game always launch in a terrible state, and fixes itself a year down the line. battlefield players will play the game regardless and maintains ~6000 user playerbase active

    I honestly kind of agree with this. A lot of people see metacritic/opencritic scores and take it at face value. I a lot of people that would just instantly write off a game if it isn’t higher than 80/100.

    the advtage the steam system has is first the bought game/gifted game situation, as well as the more important factor, the recent opinion score, as at amy given momemt a game can get good because of a major change (e. g payday 2 reverting all the pay 2 win content the original publisher mandated) or gone to shit because of greed or a bad patch.

    the problem users have is finding a curator that has a similar taste in games that they do. If I was a fan of JRPGs, im not going to care about the opinion on some person who doesnt really play jrpgs. at the same time, if you like some niche genre, to the general public, that niche is always less popular, so itll get worse ratings thanit should compared to people who enjoy said niche.

    the difference is at least you can see it in more real time numbers. Xbox is clearly a dying brand, which leaves Sonys home console sales for now (~60M) and the switch as a handheld device. Devs are already starting to port everything on PC, and 1st party game development rate has gone down a lot. 3rd party devs are also starting to abandon console exclusively/timed exclusively over time (capcom making the next monster hunter simul release on pc instead of a year and a half cadence, square enix backtracking on making final fantasy a timed exclusive due to not enough sales)

    Japan is completely flipping its old image of PC being the device for porn addicts of years past and starting to heavily buy into pc too, which is why Valve went to attend Tokyo gameshow to pitch the steamdeck for japanese handheld players(which remain the majority of console purchases in japan)

    im not saying consoles have 0 appeal and wont have buyers, its just that their market is in real time, decreasing while on pc has increased, especially post covid. with the advent of streaming, more and more people are shifting over to PC because of it. im not saying consoles are dead as in 0 sales, but the market is forever going to decrease for it, as more people get into pc, and those countries that cant afford to already got into mobile gaming (mobile gaming accounts for more than 50% of the profits of game sales)

    the problem is the covid supply chain ended a while ago and console sales havent drastically picked up since then. the PS5 has been orderable direct from sony for quite a long while now, and shortly after in stores. physical game sales (something console users champion, has gone way down (according to sony, only 30% of their users buy physical now)

    how i personally see it is that it welcomes devs to set a new minimum pc requirement to target. due to valve not doing contstent iterations (which imo is actually a good thing), it gives people a point of performance comparison reference to when wanting to play a new title.

    also to further back the statement, it wasnt because wiiu games were bad, in fact most of the wiiu games ported to switch are top sellers, so no one can make the claim it was a game quality issue.

    the reason why the fallout story is very flexible on a any place no context story is because each individual vault has its own story, and stories are hyper regionalistic. so while all regions may share the same start (nuclear fallout of course) and prewar tech, what happens after is up to the writers imagination, as long as a writer doesnt pick an already existing vault number that already has a rule.

    minor lore spoilers ahead: each vault was not built the same, all were a major experiment and had different conditions to see how humanity would adapt to different conditions presented to them.

    this is why fallout is super flexible on where a story can start, game, or show wise. for example of something that won’t be in a game or show, Vault 68 was an experiment where what would happen if you put 1 woman, and 999 men in a bunker. Vault 69 was what would happen if you had 1 man, and 999 women in a bunker.

    which is why ones better off with a modified Nvidia Shield or Apple TV to minimize data collection, if you arent using an HTPC for a streaming server. Not a binary system, its a game of whose doing it the least, and the TV companies have a huge incentive to collect money off the integrated stuff vs companies whose cost is moreso on the hardware, and make money off their intended subscription services (Apple One for Apple TV, Nvidia Geforce Now for gaming on the Shield)
